Best eSIM for Montpellier (2026): Tested Providers, Networks and Prices

František Macháček
Best eSIM in French Cities

Key Takeaways

Key Takeaways

For Montpellier we recommend eSIM4Travel, the winner of our France test, on Orange and at the lowest price in our tool. Nobody in our set names Montpellier, so the pick rests on the France-wide record and on Orange, the network the regulator ranks first.

  • All 5 France reviews in our set are positive. It scored 8.8 out of 10 in our hands-on test.
  • Plans run up to 90 GB over a year, which suits a semester or a long stay better than a weekly plan.
  • Drawback: one French network and no app. So a busy Sète festival cell leaves you nowhere to switch.
  • Heading to a festival in Sète or a packed beach at La Grande-Motte? Saily gives you Orange and SFR on one plan, a way out of a full cell. For unlimited data, Holafly has 58 of 62 France reports positive but a 4/10 speed score.

Montpellier: Student City, Beach Town and a Festival Lesson

Montpellier is the fastest-growing big city in France and one of its youngest. Students fill the Écusson, the old town behind Place de la Comédie. Four tram lines carry everyone to the beaches at Palavas and Carnon in half an hour.

For a travel eSIM the city is mostly easy: flat, modern and well covered by all four networks. The tests come from its surroundings, the beach towns in August, the festivals in Sète 20 minutes down the coast, and the Cévennes hills an hour north. One Airalo customer at a Sète music festival spent a week on one bar of 4G.

Vefru buys every eSIM we review with its own money and tests checkout, installation, speed and a support ticket. For Montpellier we read every report mentioning the city, Sète, the Hérault coast or southern France. Nobody names Montpellier itself, so we lean on the France-wide record and on southern reports, and we say so. Today's prices sit in our France comparison tool.

How well each provider's eSIM works in France

The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in France. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

Which eSIM Providers Are Cheapest in France?

Providers sell different amounts of data at different prices, so price per GB is the fairest way to compare them. Each bar below shows a provider's median price per GB for its France plans with 1 to 10 GB of data and 6 to 14 days of validity, which covers most one- and two-week trips. The shorter the bar, the less you pay for each GB. A France plan costs the same wherever you use it in the country, so these prices apply to Montpellier too.

    Generated 05.10.2026 19:47

A low price per GB isn't the whole story. Compare it with how often each provider worked for travelers in France in the chart above, and check the speed caps and plan sizes in the provider sections below before you buy.

Montpellier eSIM Plans at a Glance

A France plan bought for Montpellier works in Sète, Nîmes, the Camargue and every other corner of metropolitan France, including the TGV south to the border at Cerbère. It stops there. Barcelona, three hours away by train, needs a Europe plan or a France plus Spain plan.

Networks in Montpellier: 5G in Town, Thin Air in the Cévennes

France has four network owners: Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile. In the latest Opensignal report, Orange won the 5G download speed award and Free won 5G availability, while Bouygues collected the most awards overall. Montpellier, a young city with new districts like Port Marianne, has 5G from all four.

The regulator's 2025 campaign is the better guide once you leave town. Orange delivered perfect-quality calls 83% of the time in rural France, SFR 79%, Bouygues 77% and Free 76%. On rural web browsing, Orange loaded pages within five seconds 79% of the time against 71% for Bouygues. ARCEP names the Cévennes, an hour north, among the places where every operator loses signal. Our guide to eSIMs with more than one network explains how to move between operators.

The one report from Montpellier's doorstep is the Sète festival. An Airalo customer with a 14-day, 20 GB France plan spent a week at a music festival on one bar of 4G, too slow to load an email. His friends on normal roaming had full 5G. That story is about congestion and roaming priority, not a missing tower: when a cell is full, the operator serves its own customers first.

Southern France as a whole draws mixed reports. A Nomad driver had 5G almost all the time around Marseille and excellent data on the autoroutes. One Ubigi customer had great connection and speed on his first southern visit, while another had poor connectivity for several days. A Maya Mobile couple found reception sporadic, and a Holafly customer failed to connect most of the time across Spain, southern France and Italy.

Which network your eSIM uses depends on the brand. Holafly is Orange only, Airalo names Orange, and eSIM4Travel and GigSky are reported on it. Saily adds SFR, Nomad and Yesim add Bouygues, GoMoWorld adds Free, and Ubigi has no Orange at all. Check any address, from a student flat near Antigone to a beach house in Carnon, on the regulator's Mon Réseau Mobile map. Our 4G vs 5G guide explains why a full 4G cell beats an empty 5G bar.

eSIM4Travel topped our test at 8.8, with perfect 10s for price and customer support, and it is reported on Orange. Its France reviews in our set are five for five. One traveler got a replacement eSIM at no charge through the chat, and the agent checked back once data started flowing.

Two things suit Montpellier. Price matters on a student budget, and so does validity. eSIM4Travel sells 50 GB over 30 days for about $43 and 90 GB over a full year for about $200. So one purchase can cover a semester of weekends. There is no app and the profile allows one install. Our eSIM4Travel review walks through the purchase and the speed test.

    Saily eSIM in our hands

Saily testing outdoor Saily testing speed 1 Saily testing speed 2 Saily testing support

In France, Saily rides on Orange and SFR. That second network is the point here: the Airalo festival customer in Sète had one network and no way out. Our test scored Saily 8.5 with the best app of the group (9/10) and a 10 for support. Installation runs inside the app, and one reviewer liked that his plan activated itself when he arrived in France.

The unlimited plan gives 5 GB a day at full speed and unrestricted hotspot use, then slows to 1 Mbps. One Irish customer hit that cap on day two. The profile can be reinstalled. We have a single France report for Saily, which is why it sits behind eSIM4Travel. Our Saily review sets out the speed results.

    Holafly eSIM in our hands

Holafly testing outdoor Holafly testing support Holafly testing support 2 Holafly testing speed

Holafly counts 58 working France reports out of 62, all of them on Orange. Southern reports are mostly good: one Canadian was never let down from Paris to Marseille and Cassis. An Australian couple crossed remote France and Spain with first-class support. The exception is a British traveler whose 10-day plan for Spain, southern France and Italy failed to connect most of the time.

Our test scored Holafly 6.2, with speed at 4/10 and price at 4/10. Hotspot use is capped at 1 GB a day and the eSIM allows one install. It is the plan for a family week at the beach where nobody wants to count gigabytes, less so for a student who streams on a laptop. Our Holafly review looks at whether unlimited pays off.

With 79 of 98 France reports positive, Nomad is reported on Orange and Bouygues and posted 665 Mbps on Orange in an independent test. The nearest report to Montpellier is a British driver who had 5G almost all the time around Marseille and excellent data on the autoroutes from north to south.

Two southern reports go the other way: one traveler got no use in southern France after three days in Paris. Another found the connection missing often in rural Spain, Portugal and France. Our test put Nomad at 6.8, held back by 2/10 for support. Prices are fair, about $14 for 10 GB, and unlimited slows after 2 GB a day. Our Nomad review reproduces the support chat.

Airalo testing outdoor Airalo testing speed 1 Airalo testing speed 2 Airalo testing support

Airalo has the weakest France record in our set: 27 positive reports out of 49. The closest report to Montpellier is the most detailed failure we have. A customer of three years bought a 14-day, 20 GB France plan for a music festival in Sète. He sat on one bar of 4G, often 3G, all week, and could not load an email between performances. The plan cut out after six days, and support replied that he had used all his data.

Airalo names Orange as its French network, so the towers are not the issue; a full cell and a roaming priority queue are. Airalo scored 7.3 in our test, strong on purchase and installation (9) and weak on price (4). The full picture is in our Airalo review, alongside three Airalo alternatives.

GoMoWorld, Jetpac, Ubigi and Others in Montpellier

GoMoWorld (8.2) took a perfect 10 in our speed test and runs on Orange and Free. One French customer paid about €20 for 60 GB over 30 days and was happy with the signal, while several other France reviewers saw one bar or 3G. Jetpac (6.7) was seen only on Free in France and keeps Maps, WhatsApp and Uber working after your data runs out. ByteSIM (5.3) uses Orange and Bouygues and sells plans with a French +33 number, useful for a student who needs one for a bank or a landlord.

Among untested providers, Ubigi, which never uses Orange, split southern France: great connection for one visitor, poor for several days for another. It costs around $10 for 10 GB over 30 days. Simify carried a walker from southern France into Spain on the Camino for 38 days without a gap. Maya Mobile has 144 of 153 France reports positive but only sells multi-country plans. For a Montpellier month, eSIM4Travel's 50 GB or a local SIM beats an unlimited travel plan on price. Budget options are listed in our cheapest eSIM comparison.

How Much Data a Montpellier Stay Takes

A city-and-beach week uses maps, the TaM tram app, a few bookings, messaging and beach photos, about 0.6 GB a day. So 5 GB for a week with Wi-Fi at night. A student or remote worker is a different case: video calls, cloud files and streaming on mobile data pass 2 GB a day fast. That is why long stays end up on 20 GB, a 50 GB plan or a local SIM.

Two Airalo reviews from France show how disputes start. The Sète festival customer was told he had used 20 GB in a week on a connection too slow to load an email. Another traveler used 20 GB in four days without streaming. Protect yourself: turn off background app refresh, automatic updates and cloud photo backup on mobile data, and check the usage counter in the provider app every evening.

Download the Montpellier map area and the coast between Sète and La Grande-Motte before you travel. The rest of the tricks are in our data-saving tips for vacation. For a number matched to your habits use the travel data calculator, and our guides to 5 GB and 10 GB show what each buys.

Day Trips From Montpellier: Sète, the Camargue, Pont du Gard and Barcelona

Sète is 20 minutes by train and the setting for the one detailed report near Montpellier. An Airalo customer was stuck on one bar of 4G at a music festival while friends on normal roaming had 5G. A festival crowd fills every cell, so take a plan with two networks, keep the phone on 4G and upload at night on Wi-Fi. The beaches at Palavas, Carnon and La Grande-Motte are well covered outside the August peak, while the Camargue is flat, empty and thinly served.

Nîmes, the Pont du Gard and Arles are 30 to 60 minutes east and covered like any French town, with signal shadows inside the Roman arena. The Cévennes to the north are on the regulator's list of drop zones for every operator, so treat a hike there as offline. Barcelona is three hours by train and in Spain, where a France-only plan stops. Pair France and Spain in our multi-country search for that trip.

Buying a SIM in Montpellier vs Installing an eSIM at Home

Montpellier-Méditerranée is a small airport, so do not count on a SIM counter there. The operators' shops sit around Place de la Comédie and inside the Polygone mall, and French law requires your passport for every SIM. Online, Orange Travel charges roughly $6 for 1 GB and $23 for 10 GB over 14 days on its data-only Europe plans. SFR La Carte costs €4.99 for 40 GB.

Montpellier is the one city in this series where a local SIM often wins, because so many visitors stay for months. A student on an exchange semester should buy a French plan in the first week. Free Mobile's no-commitment plans start at €2 a month. Its 110 GB plan costs about €13 a month for the first year, plus a one-time €10 card fee. For a week or two, a travel eSIM at $9 to $14 for 10 GB wins. Our eSIM vs SIM comparison sets out every trade-off.

Free eSIM Data for a Montpellier Arrival

A first day in Montpellier may need only the tram app, a map to the flat and a message home. GigSky has a free 100 MB France trial without a card, and a Europe trial of up to 500 MB. Some Visa cards unlock up to 5 GB free, and one GigSky reviewer used two card offers for 21 days of free European data.

Roamless hands first-time buyers 500 MB free and lists all four French networks. Its pay-as-you-go credits never expire, which suits a student who dips in and out of France. Every free option is in our free eSIM guide.

What Southern France Travelers Told Us About Their eSIMs

Nobody in our review set names Montpellier, so we gathered every report from Sète, the Hérault coast and southern France more broadly. The sample is small and skewed toward people who had a very good or a very bad week.

Airalo owns the Sète story: a 20 GB plan at a music festival and one bar of 4G all week. An email would not load, and support insisted the data had been used. Nomad gave one driver 5G almost all the time around Marseille, and another a week of unlimited data in rural France for $16. It also left one traveler with no use in southern France and another with frequent gaps across rural France, Spain and Portugal.

Holafly worked through remote France and Spain for one couple and from Paris to Marseille for another. Then failed most of the time across Spain, southern France and Italy for a British traveler. GigSky crossed Spain and southern France by car with WhatsApp always on. Ubigi split the south, great for one visitor and poor for several days for another. Maya Mobile was sporadic for a couple in southern France. Simify kept a Camino walker online for 38 days.

The France-wide working-versus-failing counts are in the recommendation matrix near the top of the page. Our eSIM customer support test names the providers that fixed the faults we created deliberately.

Setting Up Your eSIM Before the TGV Reaches Saint-Roch

Install at home on Wi-Fi a few days before you travel. Every provider on this page separates installation from activation, and a problem is far easier to fix from your sofa than on a crowded platform at Saint-Roch.

      1. Check the phone. It must be eSIM-capable and free of a carrier lock. Carrier locks cause more failures than anything else, and one Holafly buyer learned that after he had paid. Look the model up in our phones with eSIM list.
      2. Install on Wi-Fi. Load the profile from the QR code or the app, with our iPhone or Samsung guide as a checklist. No QR in the email? Convert it to a QR code yourself.
      3. Do not delete the profile. Holafly, eSIM4Travel, Global YO and Yesim can be installed once and once only. Reinstalling is possible with Saily, Nomad, GigSky, Roamless and Ubigi.
      4. On arrival in France: switch the eSIM line on, enable Data Roaming, make it the mobile data line and switch off data on your home SIM. If nothing happens within a few minutes, toggle airplane mode and pick Orange F by hand.
      5. Before a festival or a long stay: switch off background app refresh and automatic updates. So a 20 GB plan lasts 20 GB, and check the usage counter each evening. Our eSIM troubleshooting guide covers what to try next.

Most visitors have been in France for hours by the time the TGV pulls into Saint-Roch, so the eSIM is already proven. If you land at the small Montpellier-Méditerranée airport, the shuttle bus to the tram takes about 15 minutes and the terminal has free Wi-Fi for a support chat. Arriving by train from Barcelona, your phone will hold a Spanish network until well past the border, so pick a French one by hand after Perpignan.

      Montpellier eSIM Questions Answered

      Frequently Asked Questions

Will my eSIM work at a festival in Sète or a packed beach at La Grande-Motte?
It will connect, but speed is the risk. An Airalo customer at a Sète music festival spent a week on one bar of 4G, often 3G. He could not load an email while friends on normal roaming had 5G. A roaming eSIM is served after the operator's own customers when a cell is full, and a festival fills every cell. Three things help. Take a plan with two networks so you can switch by hand, keep the phone on 4G rather than 5G, and upload photos at night on Wi-Fi. The menu paths are in (eSIM with multiple network carriers: Why it’s an advantage and how to switch between operators).
I am a student in Montpellier for a semester. Should I buy a travel eSIM or a French SIM?
Both, in sequence. A travel eSIM covers the first week while you find a flat and open a bank account. ESIM4Travel sells 90 GB over a full year for about $200. For the rest of the semester a French plan is cheaper and gives you a +33 number, which landlords, banks and delivery apps expect. Free Mobile's no-commitment plans start at €2 a month, and its 110 GB plan costs about €13 a month in the first year plus a €10 card fee. You will need your passport for any French SIM.
How much data do I need for a week in Montpellier?
About 5 GB for a week of tram rides, maps in the Écusson, beach days, bookings and photos, with Wi-Fi in the flat at night. Take 10 GB if you add a Sète day, a Pont du Gard visit and video calls home. A festival week or remote work passes 2 GB a day and needs 20 GB or more. Check the usage counter in the app each evening, because two Airalo customers in France disputed 20 GB bills they could not explain. For your own figure, use (Travel Data Calculator).
Can I use my Montpellier eSIM on a trip to Barcelona?
Not on a France-only plan. Barcelona is three hours by train and in Spain, and a travel eSIM only covers the countries it lists, whatever EU roaming rules say for French phone contracts. Take a Europe plan, or open our France comparison at (eSIM Comparison) and choose a two-country option. A GigSky driver and a Simify walker both crossed from southern France into Spain on wider plans without losing data. Your phone will hold the old network after the border, so select the new one by hand.
Does the eSIM work on the beaches and in the Camargue?
On the beaches, yes. Palavas, Carnon and La Grande-Motte are close to the city and covered by all four networks. August crowds can slow a roaming eSIM the same way a festival does. The Camargue is different: flat, empty and thinly served, so expect gaps between Aigues-Mortes and the lagoons on any network. The regulator ranks Orange first for rural France, which favours Holafly, Airalo, eSIM4Travel and GigSky, or Nomad and Saily as one of two networks.
Why did my eSIM use 20 GB in a few days when I barely used my phone?
Two France travelers on Airalo asked the same thing, and there are three usual causes. Phone background services are the biggest: a Jetpac customer lost 4 GB of a 5 GB pack in two days to iOS system services. Cloud photo backup and automatic app updates on mobile data are the second. The third is a slow connection that keeps retrying downloads, which is what a festival cell does. Switch off background app refresh, updates and photo backup on mobile data, then watch the usage counter each evening. The checklist is in (eSIM Not Working? Complete Troubleshooting Guide | Vefru).

Our Verdict on the Best eSIM for Montpellier

Montpellier is an easy city for a travel eSIM and a hard one for a single-network plan at a festival. eSIM4Travel is our pick: the top score in our test, the lowest prices, the Orange network and year-long plans for a semester. Saily is the alternative for Sète and August beaches, with Orange plus SFR on one plan.

Staying for months? Switch to a French SIM after the first week. Heading to Barcelona? Take a Europe plan. And whatever you buy, watch the data counter, because the one detailed report from this coast ended in a 20 GB dispute. Every plan is priced live in our France eSIM comparison tool.

      Why can you trust Vefru?

Founders František and Jan experienced problems with mobile data every time they traveled outside the EU. As technology enthusiasts, the idea of traveling abroad without a data connection or risking truly insane roaming fees was unacceptable to them. Regardless of how adventurous the story of walking across Toronto on a winter night without an online map might be, it's not something they would want to repeat.

After the emergence of eSIM and later eSIM travel data package providers, they learned a lot about the technology and industry and decided to share their findings and the comparison tool they created for themselves with others. It now contains more than 20,000 updated eSIM mobile data packages from the most popular providers for more than 170 countries around the world.

Every time you read a guide on Vefru, it is created in the same way the author would research the topic themselves. From contacting locals about the best network operators, to recommending the most advantageous plans for what you really need, to technical guides on how to create a QR code for eSIM or how to troubleshoot eSIM issues. Most articles are created based on topics that the authors themselves have dealt with and for which they found the best solutions.
