Best eSIM for Strasbourg (2026): Tested Providers for a City on the German Border

František Macháček
Best eSIM in French Cities

Key Takeaways

Key Takeaways

For Strasbourg we recommend eSIM4Travel, the one provider in our set with a cross-border report that matches this trip. Both named Alsace reports in our set are failures, so we lead with the provider whose reviews cover exactly this France, Germany and Switzerland triangle.

  • A Swiss customer has run it since 2024 across Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria and Poland, and it worked very well.
  • All 5 France reviews are positive, and it won our test at 8.8 with a perfect 10 for price and support.
  • Drawback: one French network and one install per profile. So buy the Europe version before you cross the Rhine.
  • For two French networks in the market crowds, Saily pairs Orange with SFR and sells a Europe plan for Kehl and Basel. Two providers drew Alsace complaints: a Holafly customer never got data on a three-day Alsace eSIM, and a GigSky user averaged 3.5 Mbps in Strasbourg.

Strasbourg: One City, Two Countries and a Very Busy December

Strasbourg sits on the Rhine with Germany on the far bank. Tram line D runs from the cathedral to Kehl in 20 minutes, and the TGV from Paris takes under two hours. The Christkindelsmärik fills the city every December with around two million visitors.

That geography is what breaks travel eSIMs here. Stand on the riverbank and your phone may prefer a German tower, at which point a France-only plan shows no data. Add the market crowds, when a roaming eSIM is served after local customers on a full cell.

We pay for every eSIM ourselves and test the whole path, from checkout to a support ticket. For Strasbourg we read every report naming the city, Alsace or the Rhine border, then used the regulator's 2025 measurements to fill the gaps. The named sample is small and includes two failures, so we say plainly where the evidence is thin. Prices update live in our France comparison tool.

How well each provider's eSIM works in France

The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in France. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

Which eSIM Providers Are Cheapest in France?

Providers sell different amounts of data at different prices, so price per GB is the fairest way to compare them. Each bar below shows a provider's median price per GB for its France plans with 1 to 10 GB of data and 6 to 14 days of validity, which covers most one- and two-week trips. The shorter the bar, the less you pay for each GB. A France plan costs the same wherever you use it in the country, so these prices apply to Strasbourg too.

    Generated 05.10.2026 19:47

A low price per GB isn't the whole story. Compare it with how often each provider worked for travelers in France in the chart above, and check the speed caps and plan sizes in the provider sections below before you buy.

Strasbourg eSIM Plans at a Glance

A France plan bought for Strasbourg covers Colmar, the Alsace wine route, Nancy, Metz and the rest of metropolitan France. It does not cover Kehl, Baden-Baden or the Black Forest across the Rhine, nor Basel in Switzerland. For those you need a Europe plan that lists Germany and Switzerland.

Networks in Strasbourg: French Towers, German Towers and the Rhine

In France a travel eSIM rides on Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom or Free Mobile, and in Strasbourg's center all four are strong. The regulator's 2025 campaign put Orange first nationally with 91% perfect-quality calls, Bouygues at 88%, SFR at 87% and Free at 84%.

The border is the complication. Phones choose the strongest signal they are allowed to use, and along the Rhine that can be a German network. A travel eSIM with a Europe plan simply roams on. A France-only plan loses data until you walk back into French coverage or select a French network by hand. Our guide to multi-network eSIMs shows how to force that selection.

The two Alsace reports in our set are both negative, and both are instructive. A GigSky customer averaged 3.5 Mbps across London, Paris, Strasbourg and Bern and found maps too slow to load. A Holafly customer bought a three-day eSIM in Alsace and never had data at all. Both providers run on Orange, so both point to a plan or activation problem rather than missing French towers.

Reports from the wider region are better. A Nomad customer used one plan across Paris, Interlaken, Cologne and Amsterdam every day with no issue, which is exactly the Strasbourg pattern. A Holafly traveler crossed Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland and France with 5G almost everywhere, and a Ubigi customer had good connections from Paris to Basel. Each of those was a Europe or global plan, not a France one.

For a hotel in Petite France or an apartment in Neudorf, the regulator's Mon Réseau Mobile map shows each operator's outdoor coverage per address. Bouygues began its French 2G switch-off in Nancy in November 2026. That means nothing for an eSIM phone, but it shows how fast the Grand Est networks are being modernised. Our 4G vs 5G guide explains why 4G is enough for a market weekend.

Eight eSIM Providers Compared for Strasbourg

All eight providers below went through our paid test, have a live plan table further down and enough France reviews to judge. Strasbourg and Alsace appear in only two named reports, both failures. So we rank on France-wide records, on networks and on how each provider handles a Germany or Switzerland hop.

eSIM4Travel won our overall test at 8.8, with a perfect 10 for price and 10 for support. It is reported on Orange, the operator with the best national scores. The most useful review for Strasbourg comes from a Swiss customer who has used it since 2024 across Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria and Poland. It worked very well, and a manual search for the operator often gave him a better signal.

All five France reviews in our set are positive, and one customer got a free replacement eSIM through the chat. There is no app, installation is by QR code, and the profile allows one install only. For Strasbourg, buy the Europe version if Kehl, the Black Forest or Basel is on the list. Saily eSIM in our hands

Saily solves both local problems. Its Europe plan keeps working when your phone drifts onto a German tower on the Rhine. Its two French networks, Orange and SFR, give you a second option in the Christmas market crowds. Our test scored it 8.5 with the best app in the group (9/10) and a 10 for support.

Installation runs inside the app with no QR code, the profile reinstalls, and one reviewer liked that it activated itself when he landed in France. Unlimited allows 5 GB a day at full speed with unrestricted hotspot, a cap that caught one Irish customer by surprise. One France report is all we hold, so treat the record as thin. Holafly has 58 of 62 France reports positive and runs on Orange only. A traveler who crossed Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland and France on a Europe plan had 5G almost everywhere, which is the kind of route a Strasbourg trip often takes.

The Alsace report is the one to read: a three-day eSIM bought in Alsace never delivered data. Holafly's profile allows a single install, so a failed activation cannot be retried on another phone. Our test scored it 6.2, with 4/10 for speed and 4/10 for price, and hotspot capped at 1 GB a day. Our Holafly review goes through the trade-offs.

Another worked flawlessly from Paris through Switzerland to Vienna and Prague.

Airalo is the eSIM most travelers already have installed, and its France record is the weakest we track at 27 of 49 positive. Orange is the network Airalo names for France. The border reports cut both ways: one traveler rode from Paris into Switzerland on a Europe package with great internet. Another found her regional plan did not activate for France at all.

GoMoWorld, Jetpac, Ubigi and Others in Strasbourg

GoMoWorld (8.2) posted a perfect 10 in our speed test on Orange and Free. One camper crossed France, the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium without a fault on its Europe plan. Twelve of its 16 France reports are good. Jetpac (6.7) has been seen on Free alone in France: one buyer could not connect in Paris, London, Brussels or Amsterdam. Another got a replacement eSIM over WhatsApp in 15 minutes. ByteSIM (5.3) pairs Orange with Bouygues and can supply a +33 number.

Among untested providers, Ubigi, which never uses Orange, carried one customer from Paris to Basel with good connections. Another Ubigi eSIM failed on a train crossing into Switzerland. Every unlimited plan here has a daily allowance before it slows to about 1 Mbps. The figure is 1 GB from Global YO, 2 GB from Nomad, 3 GB from eSIM4Travel and 5 GB from Saily. Holafly's hotspot allowance runs out at 1 GB a day. For a market weekend that never matters; for a working week a 10 GB fixed plan is often cheaper. See our cheapest eSIM comparison.

How Much Data a Strasbourg Trip Takes

Strasbourg is compact and light on data. A market weekend uses a map of the old town, CTS tram tickets, a restaurant booking and a lot of cathedral photos, call it 0.5 GB a day. A parliament week with email, video calls and ride-hailing lands nearer 1 GB a day. Plan on 2 GB to 3 GB for a weekend and 5 GB to 10 GB for a week.

A Jetpac user watched phone background services eat 4 GB of a 5 GB pack in two days, so switch off automatic updates before you travel. Hotel Wi-Fi is good here, so keep the eSIM for the street and the tram.

Download the Strasbourg and Colmar map areas before you arrive, and set photo backup to Wi-Fi only. Our data-saving tips have more, the travel data calculator turns your habits into a figure, and our guides to 2 GB and 5 GB show what each buys.

Day Trips From Strasbourg: Kehl, the Black Forest, Colmar and Basel

Kehl is the first test and it takes 20 minutes on tram D. The moment the tram crosses the Rhine, your phone is in Germany: a France-only plan shows no data, a Europe plan roams on. Baden-Baden and the Black Forest are the same story with more distance. Pair France and Germany in our multi-country search, and remember that EU roaming rules apply to French phone contracts, not to travel eSIMs.

Colmar and the wine route villages stay in France. One Holafly customer never got data on a three-day Alsace eSIM, so pick a plan on Orange and download the route. Basel is an hour south, in Switzerland and outside the EU. A Ubigi customer's eSIM failed on the train as it crossed into Switzerland, while a Nomad customer crossed without trouble on a wider plan. Read our Switzerland eSIM guide before a Basel day.

Buying a SIM in Strasbourg vs Installing an eSIM at Home

Strasbourg's small Entzheim airport has no operator shop, and most visitors arrive by TGV anyway. In the city, Orange, SFR, Bouygues and Free all have stores around Place Kléber, and staff register your passport on the spot as French law requires. A French prepaid SIM roams in Germany under EU rules, which is one real advantage over a France-only travel eSIM here.

Online, the operators' travel products cost less than any counter. Data-only Europe plans from Orange Travel run from about $6 for 1 GB to about $23 for 10 GB over 14 days. SFR La Carte sits at €4.99 for 40 GB. For a market weekend, a travel eSIM Europe plan at roughly $9 to $14 for 10 GB wins on convenience and covers Kehl too. A few hours between trains may not need a paid plan. Roamless gives first-time buyers 500 MB free, lists all four French networks and roams across borders on pay-as-you-go credit. One German customer used it from Germany to Switzerland to France and back when his home plan failed.

GigSky has a free 100 MB France trial with no card and up to 500 MB on its Europe trial. A few Visa cards add up to 5 GB. Given the 3.5 Mbps Strasbourg complaint, treat it as a phone test rather than a plan. The free eSIM guide covers every free option.

What Travelers Told Us About eSIMs in Strasbourg and Alsace

Strasbourg and Alsace appear in only two named reports, and both are failures. The border-crossing reports from the wider region are far more useful.

GigSky averaged 3.5 Mbps for a Canadian across London, Paris, Strasbourg and Bern; maps would not load, and his wife's paid eSIM from another company worked fine. Holafly never delivered data on a three-day eSIM one traveler bought in Alsace, though 58 of 62 France reports say it worked elsewhere.

Across the borders, a Nomad customer used one plan daily from Paris to Interlaken, Cologne and Amsterdam with no issue. A Ubigi customer went from Paris to Basel with good connections, while another Ubigi eSIM failed as a train crossed into Switzerland. An eSIM4Travel customer who covers Switzerland, France and Germany every year found a manual operator search often gave a better signal. A Roamless user filled the gap when his German home plan would not roam.

Setting Up Your eSIM Before You Reach the Rhine

Install at home on Wi-Fi, days before you travel. Installing ahead costs nothing: every plan here activates only when you first connect in France. A cathedral square at minus two degrees with two million visitors is no place to troubleshoot.

      1. Check the phone. It must have eSIM hardware and must be unlocked. A locked phone is the most common reason an eSIM fails, and one Holafly buyer only found out after paying. The full eSIM phone list shows every model that qualifies.
      2. Buy Europe, not France, if you will cross the river. Kehl, Baden-Baden and Basel are other countries. Check that Germany, and Switzerland if needed, appear in the plan's country list.
      3. Install on Wi-Fi. Follow our iPhone or Samsung guide while you scan the QR code or install from the app. Got an activation string rather than a QR? Our tool will turn it into one.
      4. On arrival: switch the eSIM line on with Data Roaming enabled, set it as the mobile data line and turn off data on the home SIM. Delete a Holafly, eSIM4Travel, Global YO or Yesim profile and it cannot be reloaded.
      5. On the riverbank with no data? Your phone may have picked a German tower. Open network selection, choose Orange F by hand, and it comes back. Everything else is in our eSIM troubleshooting guide.

The TGV from Paris takes under two hours with a few tunnel dropouts, and the station has free Wi-Fi if the eSIM has not connected. Entzheim airport is small, with a nine-minute train into town. Landing at Basel EuroAirport is different: the airport sits in France but Basel city is in Switzerland. So exit through the French side and let the phone find a French network before you judge the eSIM.

      Strasbourg eSIM Questions Answered

      Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my eSIM lose data on the Strasbourg riverbank or in Kehl?
Because your phone has picked a German tower. Kehl is one tram stop across the Rhine, and German networks reach well into Strasbourg along the river. A France-only travel eSIM cannot use them, so data stops until the phone returns to a French cell. Two fixes: buy a Europe plan that lists Germany, or open your phone's network selection and choose Orange F by hand. EU roaming rules apply to French phone contracts, not to travel eSIMs. The exact menus are in (eSIM with multiple network carriers: Why it’s an advantage and how to switch between operators).
Will my eSIM cope with the Strasbourg Christmas market crowds?
Coverage, yes; speed, not always. Around two million people visit the Christkindelsmärik each December, and when a cell around the cathedral is full the operator serves its own customers before roaming ones. A plan with two French networks lets you switch by hand when one stalls. Also drop the phone from 5G to 4G, and download the market map and your restaurant booking before you walk into the crowd.
How much data do I need for a Christmas market weekend in Strasbourg?
About 2 GB to 3 GB. A market weekend uses a map of the old town, tram tickets, a winstub reservation, messaging and a lot of photos. Call it 0.5 GB a day with hotel Wi-Fi in the evenings. Take 5 GB if you add Colmar and the wine route, and 10 GB for a parliament week with video calls. Yesim's one-day unlimited plan at about $3.50 covers a single market day. For your own number, use (Travel Data Calculator).
Which eSIM should I use if I fly into Basel EuroAirport for Strasbourg?
A Europe plan that lists both France and Switzerland. EuroAirport sits on French soil with a French and a Swiss exit, and Basel city is in Switzerland, outside the EU. A France-only eSIM works once you exit on the French side and ride north, but not if you go into Basel first. A Ubigi customer's eSIM failed on a train crossing from France into Switzerland, while a Nomad customer used one plan from Paris to Interlaken without trouble. The Swiss side is covered in (eSIM Switzerland | Comparison of the Best Data eSIMs).
Does the eSIM work on the wine route around Colmar and Riquewihr?
Usually, with the rural caveats that apply across France. Orange has the best rural figures in the regulator's 2025 test, with perfect-quality calls 83% of the time against 76% for Free. The wine villages sit on the Vosges foothills, where signal comes and goes. One Holafly customer bought a three-day eSIM in Alsace and never got data, which points to an activation problem rather than missing towers. Pick a plan on Orange, download the route in Strasbourg, and keep the phone on 4G.
Does the eSIM work on the TGV from Paris to Strasbourg?
For most of the ride, yes. The trip takes under two hours, and the regulator's 2025 test found Orange held 74% of two-minute calls aboard high-speed trains, Free 61%, Bouygues 58% and SFR 56%. A plan with Orange has the edge, which covers Saily, eSIM4Travel, Holafly, GigSky and Nomad. An Airalo customer rode from Paris across France into Switzerland with great internet on a Europe package. Download what you need before boarding and let the phone reconnect after the tunnels near Saverne.

Our Verdict on the Best eSIM for Strasbourg

Strasbourg is a border city, so buy the plan that survives the far bank of the Rhine. eSIM4Travel is our pick: the highest score in our test and 5 of 5 France reports positive. One Swiss customer runs it across France, Germany and Switzerland every year. Buy its Europe version if Kehl or Basel is on your list.

Saily is the alternative for the market crowds, with Orange plus SFR and a reinstallable profile. Learn the manual network menu before you reach the Rhine, and compare live prices in our France eSIM comparison tool.

      Why can you trust Vefru?

Founders František and Jan experienced problems with mobile data every time they traveled outside the EU. As technology enthusiasts, the idea of traveling abroad without a data connection or risking truly insane roaming fees was unacceptable to them. Regardless of how adventurous the story of walking across Toronto on a winter night without an online map might be, it's not something they would want to repeat.

After the emergence of eSIM and later eSIM travel data package providers, they learned a lot about the technology and industry and decided to share their findings and the comparison tool they created for themselves with others. It now contains more than 20,000 updated eSIM mobile data packages from the most popular providers for more than 170 countries around the world.

Every time you read a guide on Vefru, it is created in the same way the author would research the topic themselves. From contacting locals about the best network operators, to recommending the most advantageous plans for what you really need, to technical guides on how to create a QR code for eSIM or how to troubleshoot eSIM issues. Most articles are created based on topics that the authors themselves have dealt with and for which they found the best solutions.
