We rebuilt the list on 26 Sep 2026 from the device lists of two of the best-known travel eSIM sellers, Airalo [7] and Holafly [9]. For Apple, Samsung and Google we also checked each model against the maker's own pages [1] [4] [5]. Where the sources disagree, we follow the phone maker.

How to Check if Your Phone Is eSIM Compatible
You do not need a model list to find out. This test takes a few seconds and works on iPhone and Android alike.
- Open the phone app you use for normal calls, not WhatsApp or another messenger [7].
- Dial *#06#.
- Look for a 32-digit number labelled EID. If it is there, your phone has eSIM [7].
No EID on the screen? Look for an Add eSIM option in the settings. On an iPhone it sits under Cellular or Mobile Data, and on a Pixel it appears under SIMs as Download a new eSIM [8]. On a Samsung, go to Settings, Connections, SIM manager and tap Add eSIM [6].
Check the carrier lock before you buy a plan
An eSIM chip alone is not enough. The phone must not be locked to one operator, and Airalo says jailbroken iPhones and rooted Android phones are ruled out too [7]. On an iPhone, open Settings, General, About: next to Carrier Lock it should say No SIM Restrictions [1]. On Android, ask the operator that sold you the phone.

Apple iPhones with eSIM
Apple says every iPhone from the XS, XS Max and XR onward works with eSIM [1]. That includes the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max announced on 9 Sep 2026 [2] and the foldable iPhone Duo [3]. From the iPhone 13 on, two eSIMs can be active at the same time, so your home number stays on while a travel eSIM handles data [9].
China is the big exception. In mainland China, only the iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, 17e and Air work with eSIM [1]. In Hong Kong and Macao, some iPhone models come with two physical SIM slots instead [1]. Airalo lists the 13 mini, 12 mini, SE (2020) and XS as the Hong Kong and Macao models that do have eSIM [7].

Samsung Galaxy Phones with eSIM
Samsung's eSIM phones start with the original Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy S20 series [5]. The newest are the Galaxy S26, Z Fold8 Ultra, Z Fold8 and Z Flip8 [6]. Samsung warns that eSIM may be unavailable depending on the country the phone came from [6].
Check these exceptions before you buy a plan. The Galaxy S20 FE and S21 FE have no eSIM [7] [9], and neither do US versions of the S20, S21 and Note20 Ultra [7]. Samsung sells the A35 and A36 with eSIM only in Europe, North America and Korea, and the A54 only in those regions plus Japan [5].
Airalo says Galaxy phones from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan have no eSIM [7]. Samsung's own Hong Kong page, updated 22 Sep 2026, does list the S26, Z Fold8 and Z Flip8 series with eSIM [6]. Many Galaxy phones bought in South Korea also lack eSIM; Airalo names the S23, S24, Z Fold4, Z Fold5, Z Flip4, Z Flip5 and A54 as Korean models that have it [7].

Google Pixel Phones with eSIM
Google says every Pixel from the Pixel 4 onward works with eSIM [4]. The newest models on the list are the Pixel 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro XL and 11 Pro Fold [9].
The first three generations come with conditions. A Pixel 2 has eSIM only if it was bought with Google Fi service. A Pixel 3 bought in Australia, Taiwan or Japan, or from a US or Canadian carrier other than Sprint or Google Fi, has none. A Pixel 3a bought in Japan or with Verizon service has none either [4].
US versions of the Pixel 10, 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL have no SIM tray at all [4]. According to 9to5Google, the US Pixel 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro XL are eSIM-only too, while the 11 Pro Fold keeps a SIM slot.

Huawei has only a handful of eSIM phones: the P40, P40 Pro and Mate 40 Pro, and more recently the Pura 70 Pro and Pura X Max [7] [9]. eSIM-Only Phones Without a SIM Tray
More and more phones have no SIM slot at all. For travel that is fine, because a data eSIM works right away. You just cannot fall back on a local plastic SIM at the airport.
- iPhone Duo: eSIM-only in every country [3].
- iPhone Air: Holafly calls it Apple's first iPhone that is eSIM-only worldwide [9].
- iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max: eSIM-only in 12 markets, namely Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the US and the US Virgin Islands [2]. Elsewhere they keep a nano-SIM tray next to the eSIM.
- iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max: eSIM-only in the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan and several Gulf states, according to Holafly [9].
- iPhone 14 and 15 series bought in the US: no physical SIM [9].
- Pixel 10, 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL bought in the US: no physical SIM [4].

Phone Not on the List? What to Check
Airalo says its list is updated often but is not complete [7]. The same goes for ours. If your phone is missing, dial *#06# first: the EID test beats any list. If you are still unsure, ask the maker or the shop, quoting the exact model number.
