eSIM4Travel scored the highest in our tests: 8.80 out of 10. Customer support and prices both scored 10. There is no app. You install the eSIM from a QR code sent by email. According to eSIMDB, it connects to Orange in France.

All 5 French reviews in our set say it worked. We have used it in France several times without a problem. Five reviews is a small sample, so read the 100% with that in mind. One reviewer had trouble connecting and got a replacement eSIM by chat for free. The agent checked back later to confirm it worked. Another found reception improved after picking the network by hand.

Holafly sells only unlimited plans, and in France it uses only Orange. Its help center confirms this. That one choice explains its track record. 75 of 83 French reviews say it worked (90%), the best result of any large sample. Reviewers report it working in Paris, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Nice, Cassis and at Disneyland Paris.

The trade-offs are speed and price. Holafly scored 4 out of 10 on speed and 4 on price in our test, for a total of 6.17. The hotspot is capped at 1 GB per day and the plan is data-only. A few reviewers in central Paris got stuck on 3G. One reported no data at all in Alsace, and several say the support chat is mostly a bot.

Nomad posted the fastest speed of any provider in an independent test in Lille in January 2026: 665 Mbps on Orange. Reviews back the coverage outside Paris. 104 of 125 French reports say it worked (83%). People mention 5G around Marseille and signal from the north down to the Pyrenees. QR activation at Charles de Gaulle took a few minutes.

Paris is the weak spot: 18 worked, 9 failed. Nomad uses Orange and Bouygues based on tests. One reviewer in the Paris suburbs found the eSIM locked to SFR, with a connection that kept dropping. Burgundy got a "not at all" report. Nomad scored 6.83 in our test, with customer support at 2 out of 10. Do not count on help in a hurry.

Saily comes from the NordVPN team. It has the best app of all providers we tested (9/10) and support at 10/10. Its total score is 8.50. It uses Orange and SFR in France. The app blocks ads and unsafe websites at no extra cost. The eSIM activates on its own when you land.

We have only 2 scored French reviews for Saily, so we cannot rank its coverage. One worked. The other reports that the unlimited plan slows to 1 Mbps after 5 GB in 24 hours. Many GigSky reviews from France come from a free perk. Visa cardholders get up to 5 GB, and anyone can claim a 100 MB trial. 48 of 64 reviewers say it worked (75%). Positive reports include Bordeaux, rural Provence, Paris and driving on national roads with signal 99% of the time. GigSky is a mobile operator in its own right and connects through Orange in France.

Most failures come down to speed. One reviewer averaged 3.5 Mbps across Paris and Strasbourg. Another found the unlimited plan slowed after about 2 GB. Monaco is not in the France plan, so you lose signal along the Côte d'Azur border. GigSky scored 7.17 in our test, with support at 9/10. Its app keeps working after your data runs out. Global YO is usually the cheapest option in our France comparison. It scored 10/10 on price in our test (8.00 overall). 21 of 28 French reviews say it worked, including 7 of 8 in Paris. One reviewer reports it connects to Free in France. That fits the single failure in the French Alps and a report of working only half the time in Paris.

Avoid its unlimited plans. Three reviewers report speeds collapsing after 1 GB per day, with one dropping to "1 kb/s". The fixed plans are where the value is: 5 GB for 15 days was under $6 when we checked. Support scored 5/10 and is mostly a bot. Our Global YO review has the details.

Airalo is the biggest name in travel eSIMs, and its purchase flow and installation scored 9/10 in our test. But in France it has the weakest record of any provider with a large sample. 32 of 63 reviewers say it worked; 31 say it did not. In Paris the split is 5 to 4.

Two patterns repeat. First, Europe regional plans that work in Spain stop at the French border. Support then asks people to repeat the same settings checks for hours. Second, long-time users say it used to work well. Now they report it slow or unusable in Nice, Cannes and Paris. Airalo uses Orange, so the network is not the problem. One reviewer at a festival in Sète was told he had used 20 GB. His connection could not load an email.

If you still want Airalo, buy the France-only plan (from $4), not a regional one. Our Airalo review covers the price problem (4/10 in our test), and we list alternatives to Airalo.

GoMoWorld, Jetpac, ByteSIM and Yesim in France

GoMoWorld scored 8.17 in our test with 10/10 for speed. An independent test measured 630 Mbps on Orange. It uses Orange and Free. Only 14 of 26 French reviews say it worked. Several of those failures happened in India, Tunisia or Réunion, not France. Two real French issues: 3G in Monaco, and a 30 to 40 minute wait for the network on arrival. Jetpac connected only to Free in independent tests, the network with the smallest rural footprint. 9 of 12 reviews say it worked, mostly in Paris. Two reviewers got a replacement eSIM over WhatsApp within minutes of landing. It also gives you airport lounge access if your flight is delayed by more than an hour. ByteSIM is the one to pick if you want a French +33 number. Some plans include unlimited EU calls and SMS. It uses Orange and Bouygues. The single French review praises a truly unlimited 5G hotspot. Support scored 2/10 in our test. Read our ByteSIM review.

Best eSIM Plans for France by Data Volume

Prices change often, so the tables below pull live data from our database of more than 23,000 plans. Pick the data volume first. As a rule of thumb, 2 GB covers a weekend of maps and messages. 5 GB covers a week of normal use, and 10 GB covers two weeks. Take 20 GB or more if you stream or share photos every day.

Best eSIM for Paris and Other French Cities

City results differ from the national ranking, so we split them out. Paris is the only city with enough reviews for a real comparison. The other locations rest on a handful of reports each, so treat them as hints rather than firm verdicts.

Best eSIM for Paris

Paris has good networks. The regulator ARCEP measured that Bouygues, SFR and Orange reach 97% of the métro, and Free 96%. Reviewers still report drops to 3G, dead zones in the center and gaps underground. That comes down to which network the eSIM roams onto, and how fast it reconnects.

For Paris, we recommend Holafly if you want unlimited data on Orange. For a fixed plan, Maya Mobile, Simify and Global YO all pass 85% in the city. Our overall pick, eSIM4Travel, has no Paris-specific review yet, but it uses Orange, and Orange-based providers do well here. Ubigi and Maya Mobile are the two providers reviewers confirm working underground in the métro.

Nomad and GigSky drop to two thirds in Paris, and Airalo to just over half. If your eSIM gets stuck on 3G, pick Orange by hand in your network settings. Our guide on switching operators shows how on iPhone and Android.

Nice, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux and the Countryside

The pattern is clear. Cities are fine on most providers. Failures pile up in rural and coastal regions and in the Paris outer suburbs. They hit providers that roam onto SFR or Free hardest. Orange covers about 98% of the land area and Free about 92%. A provider with Orange, or with all four networks, is the safer choice once you leave the cities.

French Mobile Networks: Orange, SFR, Bouygues and Free

Every travel eSIM in France runs on one or more of four networks. Which one you get decides your speed and your rural coverage. The table shows the 2025 results from ARCEP, the French regulator. It ran more than a million measurements between June and August 2025.

Orange wins on every rural and rail measure. Bouygues is a close second in cities. Opensignal gave it 12 of 17 awards in its November 2025 France report, while Orange won 5G download speed. Free won 5G availability but has the smallest land footprint and the slowest uploads. An independent test in Lille in January 2026 confirms this. Orange peaked at 665 Mbps and Bouygues at about 406 Mbps, with SFR and Free well behind.

Which provider uses which network:

Two more things worth knowing. France is switching off 2G in 2026. Orange started in March; SFR and Bouygues follow in November and December. 3G goes in 2028 to 2029. A very old phone will not connect at all. SFR is also being sold to Bouygues, Free and Orange. The deal should close in the second half of 2027, and until then the four networks stay as they are.

Buying a Local SIM or eSIM in France

A French operator eSIM gives you the fastest speeds and a French +33 number. The price is paperwork. French law (CPCE article R10-13) requires operators to record your identity, so there is no anonymous prepaid SIM. At a shop counter you show your passport. Online you upload it, and a line bought remotely is suspended if you do not verify within about 15 days.

• Orange Travel (formerly Orange Holiday) is the pick for speed. In April 2026, data-only Europe tiers ran from $5.99 (1 GB, 7 days) to $49.99 (50 GB, 30 days). Plans with a French number and unlimited EU calls start at $29.99 for 20 GB. You must register with ID to recharge. Buy at travel.orange.com.
• Bouygues Telecom My European eSIM replaced the old prepaid card in June 2025. Promo tiers ran from €14.90 for 15 GB (15 days) to €49.90 for 120 GB (30 days). You get a +33 number and tethering. Check the live price on bouyguestelecom.fr before you count on it.
• SFR La Carte is the cheapest way to open a French line. €4.99 buys 40 GB for 31 days, with unlimited calls and SMS in France and the EU.
• Free Mobile sells monthly plans with no commitment (110 GB 5G from €12.99, 350 GB for €19.99). The eSIM costs a one-time €10 card fee, the same as a physical SIM. Best for stays of a month or longer.

At Paris CDG, Orly and Nice airports there are no operator shops in arrivals. Relay newsstands and tourist information desks sell Orange and Bouygues (Orange and SFR in Nice). You register with your passport. Travel guides quote about €40 for 30 GB at CDG, a price we could not verify at the counter.

A travel eSIM with 10 GB costs $9 to $14 from Nomad, Airalo or Ubigi. The local SIM only pays off if you need the French number or calls. For the bigger picture, see eSIM vs SIM.

Useful Advice for Using an eSIM in France

• EU and EEA residents do not need a travel eSIM. Roam-like-at-home covers France. Since 1 January 2026 it also covers Ukraine and Moldova. Check the fair-use cap on your home plan first.
• Buy a France plan, not a Europe plan, if France is your main stop. Reviews for Airalo, Jetpac, Nomad and GoMoWorld all describe the same thing. Regional plans worked in Spain or the UK, then stopped at the French border. If you visit several countries, use our multi-country search to find one plan that lists each of them.
• Monaco, Andorra and Switzerland are not France. France-only plans stop at their borders. GigSky, Nomad and GoMoWorld users all lost signal around Monaco. For Switzerland, see our Switzerland eSIM guide.
• Expect gaps on TGV trains. Even Orange holds only 74% of two-minute calls at high speed. Download offline maps and tickets before boarding.
• Every "unlimited" plan has a cap. Holafly caps the hotspot at 1 GB a day. Saily slows after 5 GB a day, Nomad after 2 GB. eSIM4Travel and Jetpac slow after 3 GB, Global YO and ByteSIM after 1 GB. Ubigi slows or stops at around 60 GB. Maya Mobile slows to 3 Mbps after 5 GB a day.
• Install at home on Wi-Fi, activate on landing. Your phone must be carrier-unlocked. We have guides for iPhone and Samsung. If nothing connects, try the fixes in our eSIM troubleshooting guide, then set the network to Orange by hand.
• Travel eSIMs are data-only. Keep your home SIM active with data roaming off so bank and booking SMS codes still arrive. WhatsApp calls work fine on data.
• Overseas France is not included. Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion and the other overseas territories are billed separately and need their own plan.
• Check that your phone can use an eSIM. iPhone XS or newer and most Android phones from 2020 can. Here is our list of phones that work with eSIM. If yours cannot, a portable Wi-Fi hotspot is the fallback.

For most trips, buy eSIM4Travel. It has our top test score, 10/10 support and data on Orange. Its record in France is clean, both in our own use and in the reviews we found. Skip Europe-wide regional plans for a France trip. Be careful with Airalo: it failed for half of the French reviewers in our set. Outside the cities, stick to a provider that uses Orange.
