Maya Mobile is the pick for most trips to France because it had the best record of any provider here and the fewest misses in Paris. It worked well for 155 of 160 travelers who reported from France (97%), strong evidence. The successes are a cross-section of French trips: two weeks in Paris, the Paris Olympics, a road trip around the whole country, interrailing through France to Switzerland and Italy, a cruise calling at French ports, a month of 5G in Paris, and a winter ski trip. Several travelers said it worked in the métro and that their companions on other eSIMs borrowed their hotspot.

The five misses were almost all outside the capital. One traveler lost the connection repeatedly along the Brittany and Normandy coast in August 2025, one had slow or no data in Dijon and Lyon in June 2025, one reported cutting out while crossing France on a Europe plan in October 2025, and one could not get the eSIM to connect at all in Fréjus in September 2024. A sixth complaint, a six-month plan that stopped after four months, was about the plan expiring rather than the network. In Paris the only miss described drops in the centre during a London and Paris trip. "Never had an issue during our two weeks in Paris," wrote one traveler on 7 Oct 2025.

What sets Maya Mobile apart is its plan range, and it is also the main drawback. Our comparison tool lists only its global unlimited plans for France: 3, 7, 14 or 30 days, with 5 GB a day at full speed before the speed drops, hotspot included and top-ups allowed, plus a Global + Cruise version with coverage at sea. There is no France-only plan and nothing shorter than three days, so a weekend in Paris with light use pays for more than it needs; on price we rate it the cheapest global unlimited plan in our comparison, below every provider's single-country unlimited plan over a month. Maya Mobile does not name its France networks on its page; one traveler reported connecting to SFR in Paris. In our hands-on test of Maya Mobile the eSIM installed in two minutes after we set the APN to "globaldata", ran on 5G at once, and slowed only after roughly 5.5 GB in a day, the fairest unlimited rule we have seen. Support was the weak point: a WhatsApp bot, a five-step form and a human after about nine minutes who could not see our eSIM status. Maya Mobile suits a week or more of heavy use across several countries.

Holafly is the pick for a drive through rural France and across borders, with one caveat: in our test its speed was capped from the first megabyte, a small fraction of what a local SIM got on the same cell. It worked well for 79 of 84 travelers who reported from France (94%), strong evidence, and more of its reports than any other provider's describe multi-country road trips: by car through France, Italy, Austria and Germany; seven weeks across France and the UK; 42 days through France, Portugal, Spain, Turkey and the UK; two months in Spain, France, Croatia and Montenegro without a day of trouble. In practice the cap means Holafly is enough for maps, messaging, browsing and streaming, and slow for large downloads, uploads, cloud backups and laptop work.

The five misses are spread out. One traveler in central Paris got only 3G and a drained battery in June 2026; another on a monthly plan found Paris too slow for remote work in July 2026. One bought a three-day plan in Alsace in April 2026 and never had data. One failed to connect for most of a ten-day trip through Spain, southern France and Italy in August 2026. The fifth was a carrier-locked phone that could not install the eSIM. Successes include seven French cities with mountains, beaches and underground stops, remote France and Spain, south-west France, a Buddhist monastery near Bordeaux, and Disneyland Paris. "It never let me down from Paris, Disney Paris to Marseille and Cassis," wrote one traveler on 26 May 2026.

Holafly's own help center names Orange as its France network, the network the regulator ranks first for rural and rail coverage, which fits its road-trip record. It sells unlimited plans only, from 1 to 90 days, as of September 2026; the hotspot is limited to 1 GB a day, there are no top-ups (a longer stay means a new eSIM), and the plan is data-only. Holafly's France plans were not in our comparison tool when we wrote this, so there is no plan table below. On price it sits above the other unlimited sellers in our comparison. In our hands-on test of Holafly installation was a single tap with 5G right away, the support bot handed us to a quick human, and the speed stayed capped throughout. Holafly suits travelers who want to stop thinking about data on a long drive and do not need to work from a laptop.

Ubigi is the pick for travelers who want a strong France record at a low price and are comfortable fixing settings themselves. It worked well for 92 of 100 travelers who reported from France (92%), strong evidence, and it is the third cheapest provider in France in our comparison. Successes describe data the moment the plane landed in Paris, a strong signal for a week in the capital, a campervan router across France, Corsica, south-western France, and multi-country trips through Switzerland and Italy where the network switched on its own after a few minutes.

The eight misses are mostly rural or settings-related. Travelers reported weak or no signal in rural Normandy, in Créon and Clisson, in the Bordeaux area and in the countryside on a country-only plan; one in Palaiseau south of Paris had an intermittent 4G connection for weeks, and a few in Paris saw only LTE or 3G in some central areas. Several reviews describe an outage of several hours in early June 2026, after which Ubigi emailed affected customers. One traveler on the France unlimited plan had the plan suspended after about 60 GB of hotspot use for a laptop; Ubigi's own page gives a fair-use limit of 60 GB as of September 2026. "Best performance in France I have experienced in the last 5 years," wrote one traveler on 21 Jul 2026.

Ubigi says its France eSIM uses SFR, Free and Bouygues, and not Orange, which explains the rural gaps: Orange leads the regulator's rural measurements. Its France plans in our comparison tool are 3, 10, 25 and 50 GB for 30 days (10 GB also for 7 days) and unlimited for 1, 7, 15 or 30 days, with Europe and World plans from 500 MB up. One eSIM is reused for every trip, the hotspot works on all plans, and you can choose a French or home IP address. In our hands-on test of Ubigi the QR arrived by email in a minute and speeds showed no throttling, but the site and app were clumsy and our support ticket went unanswered for 24 hours; the one bright spot is that the app let us buy more data with a zero balance. Ubigi suits a city trip on a budget, not a first eSIM.

GoMoWorld is the pick for travelers who burn through data, because its France plans are large and our test found no throttling at all. It worked well for 25 of 28 travelers who reported from France (89%), strong evidence. Successes describe streaming a Fire TV stick for a whole French holiday, 60 GB in 30 days, mostly 5G along the Côte d'Azur and into Monaco in December 2024, a campervan trip through France, the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium with digital radio on all day, and "best one I used in Paris" in July 2026.

The three misses: one traveler in August 2026 never got more than one bar anywhere in France, even after switching networks; one bought the Europe-wide plan in June 2026 and said it did not work in France at all; one in Monaco in June 2026 was stuck on 3G and could not use the internet. Two more reviews, counted as working, describe 30 to 40 minutes of "network not reachable" on arrival before the connection came up on its own. The most common cause of "not working" in our test was forgetting to press Start in the app, and one French reviewer confirmed that the plan ran flawlessly once started. "Streamed our firestick off the GoMoWorld esim for the whole holiday," wrote one traveler on 2 Jul 2026.

GoMoWorld, eir's travel brand, sells France plans of 4 GB for 7 days and 15, 50 or 75 GB for 30 days, and a Europe plan that includes the UK and Switzerland from 2.5 GB to 35 GB. Third-party tests report Orange and Free as its networks in France. On price it sits below the market in France, best from 5 GB up and poor value for 1 GB. The eSIM is app-only and never emailed, one account covers one device, there is no unlimited plan and no calls. In our hands-on test of GoMoWorld it was the only provider to score full marks for speed, with no slowdown after more than 10 GB in a day, but human support works office hours only. GoMoWorld suits heavy users in France and the rest of Europe who will not need weekend help.

Nomad is the pick for experienced users who want a France plan in exactly the size they need and will not call the help desk, which in our test led only to a bot. It worked well for 105 of 126 travelers who reported from France (83%), strong evidence, but with more misses than the providers above. Successes describe north-to-Pyrenees motorhome trips with the TV on hotspot, 5G almost everywhere around Marseille and along the autoroutes, small villages, a family managing several plans from one app, and fast QR activation on landing at Charles de Gaulle.

The 21 misses cluster in Paris and in the countryside. Eight of its 28 Paris reports failed: an unstable connection in the suburbs that showed only SFR, signal swinging between 3G and 5G or none, data that stopped after two days or after a week, and one traveler with almost no signal after leaving the airport. Elsewhere travelers reported nothing at all in Burgundy, poor signal on the roads between cities, gaps in rural southern France, and Europe plans that worked in Spain or Italy and died at the French border. "Worked well in Paris but not in Burgundy (like not at all)," wrote one traveler on 27 Jul 2026. Several misses say the bot could not help without Wi-Fi.

eSIM4Travel is the pick for the lowest price in France and the best help desk we tested, with the caveat that only five travelers have reported from France so far. It worked well for 5 of 5 travelers who reported from France (100%), limited evidence. The successes describe multi-country trips through France, Portugal and Montenegro, instant activation in Canada, Jamaica and France, repeat use in the States, France and the UK, and a Swiss traveler who used one eSIM across France, Austria, Germany, Poland, England and Ireland and got better reception by picking the network by hand.

There were no misses, but two of the five had trouble at first. One could not connect in France in December 2024 and reached a person on chat who sent a new eSIM at no charge, then checked back once data was flowing. "I had an issue connecting in France and was able to contact customer service promptly via chat," that traveler wrote on 27 Dec 2024. The other needed help with installation on a different trip. With five reports we cannot say how it does on the coast or in the mountains.

GigSky worked well for 54 of 65 travelers who reported from France (83%), strong evidence, but a quarter of its Paris reports were misses, so it is not a top pick. Many France reports come from free plans given to Visa cardholders: a complimentary 7-day France unlimited, a free 10 GB that lasted 16 days, a free Paris plan plus a free International one. Successes describe data right away at Charles de Gaulle, Bordeaux, 5G in most of France, rural Provence over the mountain tops, and smooth switching between France, Spain and Italy. The 11 misses are mostly in Paris: slow data that would not load maps, no 5G at all, days without data inside the city, constant airplane-mode toggling to reconnect, a weak signal compared with Orange, and a throttled unlimited plan in 2024. One traveler found Monaco excluded from the complimentary plan and lost signal along the Côte d'Azur; another had none in Strasbourg. "Only had trouble with connectivity in very crowded areas," wrote a Paris traveler on 30 Jul 2026.

Global YO worked well for 22 of 29 travelers who reported from France (76%), strong evidence, which is the second-weakest record among the big names here despite its low price. The successes are mostly multi-country Europe trips from 2024 and 2025: France, Italy and the Netherlands over a month, video calls during a work emergency, fast speeds in crowded parts of Paris, a landline call to France through its in-app calling. The seven misses: a German traveler in July 2026 found the Free network unusable in France, a Europe package worked only half the time in Paris in May 2026, a traveler in the French Alps never got data, two 1 GB plans never worked, a recharge failed, and an unlimited plan slowed to a crawl after 1 GB a day. "It only worked 1/2 of the time while in Paris, but worked 100% of the time while in Frankfurt," wrote one traveler on 9 May 2026.

Airalo worked well for 47 of 63 travelers who reported from France (75%), strong evidence, the weakest record of the providers with 20 or more reports here. The 16 misses are recent and alike: from June to August 2026 travelers wrote that pages took 10 to 20 seconds to start loading with full 5G bars, that two France eSIMs never connected, that a Europe plan died at the French border after working in Spain (one fixed by a settings change, one refunded after hours of troubleshooting), that Paris service was very poor or dropped 40% of the time, that Monaco, Nice and Cannes had no usable data, and that a 20 GB plan was "used up" at a festival in Sète on a one-bar signal. Several long-time customers said it had worked in earlier years. Successes describe the regional Europe plan across borders, the Tour du Mont Blanc, a Paris-to-Switzerland train, and cruises. "Very poor internet service in Paris," wrote one traveler on 20 Jul 2026.

Airalo's France plans in our comparison tool run from 1 GB to 50 GB over 3 to 30 days, plus unlimited with 3 GB a day at full speed, and its Europe and global plans include the Discover+ family with calls and texts. Airalo's France page names Orange. On price it is above the market average in France. In our hands-on test of Airalo purchase and installation were among the easiest and speeds were not capped, which is why it stays a fair choice for anyone who needs a plan with calls. Airalo is otherwise hard to recommend for France on this record.

Saily worked well for 4 of 4 travelers who reported from France (100%), limited evidence, too few to rank it above providers with a hundred reports. The reports say little about coverage: one traveler installed it and found it working in France in May 2026, one liked that it activates on arrival, one had a phone stolen in the Paris métro and was given a credit for a new eSIM, and one on the unlimited plan was surprised to be slowed after 5 GB in a day, a limit Saily's plan terms state. "So far it's OK in France," wrote one traveler on 6 May 2026.

Its France plans in our comparison tool are 1 GB for 7 days, 3, 5, 10 and 20 GB for 30 days and unlimited for 15 days, plus Europe and Global plans; its page speaks of France's best networks without naming them, and third parties report Orange and SFR. On price it is among the two most expensive providers in France, and its unlimited plan costs about 1.6 times its 20 GB plan. In our hands-on test of Saily the app and installation were the smoothest we have seen and the help desk was one of the two best, with a free VPN location and ad blocker thrown in. Saily suits a first eSIM for someone who will pay extra for polish.

Roamless worked well for 8 of 9 travelers who reported from France (89%), limited evidence. The successes are long multi-country trips: five months across the UK and Europe with providers picked up at every border, a month on the Flex credit including remote areas of France, and instant connection on landing in France, Greece, Croatia and Italy. The one miss started on 5G in France and fell to 3G and then almost nothing in January 2026; another traveler, counted as working, found that credit bought for Scotland could not be used after moving to Paris. "Good signal everywhere I went," including remote areas in France, wrote one traveler on 15 Oct 2025.

Roamless says its France eSIM uses all four networks, Orange, Bouygues, SFR and Free, the broadest fallback of any provider here; our comparison tool lists Bouygues Telecom on its France plans. It sells pay-as-you-go credit that never expires, 30-day France plans from 1 GB to 50 GB and Europe and Global plans, with no throttling and an unlimited hotspot, plus in-app calls. On price it is around the market average in France, cheap for 1 GB and dear for 10 GB and up. In our hands-on test of Roamless the preselected APN did not work until we chose another by hand, and Google Pay failed at checkout, but support fixed our problem in half an hour. Roamless suits frequent travelers with light data needs.

Yesim worked well for 13 of 16 travelers who reported from France (81%), limited evidence, including 3 of 3 in Paris. The review texts behind these counts were not in the set we read, so we cannot say what the three misses were. What we know comes from our own test and from the price analysis: Yesim is among the two most expensive providers in France on fixed plans, and its support was among the slowest we tested, 15 to 60 minutes per reply.

Its France plans in our comparison tool are a 500 MB day pass, 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 GB for 30 days, and unlimited sold by the day for 1 to 30 days with a fair-use limit it does not publish; Europe and Global bundles sit alongside. Third-party tests report Orange and Bouygues. In our hands-on test of Yesim the plan started at purchase rather than on first connection, so it pays to buy close to departure or use the activate-later option, and the app nagged with upsells. Yesim suits experienced users who want unlimited data for an exact number of days.

Jetpac worked well for 12 of 15 travelers who reported from France (80%), limited evidence. Successes describe a fast connection within five minutes of landing in Paris, hotspot for remote work between Paris and Crete, and a 20 GB Europe pack over two weeks in France and London with only train dead spots. The three misses were all Europe plans that failed on the move: one that worked in Spain and died after crossing into France in May 2026, one that could not connect in Paris, London, Brussels or Amsterdam in August 2025, and one Paris trip in 2024 abandoned for another eSIM. Three more travelers, counted as working, needed WhatsApp support on arrival to get a replacement eSIM installed; one found that system services ate 4 GB of a 5 GB pack in two days. "Drove across the border to France and it doesn't work," wrote one traveler on 12 May 2026.

Its France plans in our comparison tool run from 1 GB to 40 GB and unlimited for 3 to 30 days with 3 GB a day at full speed; some of its Europe unlimited plans are flagged 4G only. Third-party tests report Free as its France network, while our tool lists Free and Orange on its Europe plan. On price it is above the market average in France. In our hands-on test of Jetpac the extras stood out: WhatsApp, Maps and Uber keep working after the data runs out on packs of 3 GB and more, in-app voice packs, and a free lounge if a flight is delayed an hour, but the app and site were rough. Jetpac suits frequent flyers who want those extras and a hotspot.

ByteSIM worked well for 1 of 1 travelers who reported from France (100%), too few to judge. That one traveler used it through Spain and France in October 2025 for remote work, praised the unlimited 5G hotspot, and got an instant WhatsApp reply when activation stumbled. One report says nothing about coverage in the rest of the country.

ByteSIM has the biggest France catalogue in our comparison tool: daily plans of 500 MB or 1 GB a day, fixed plans from 500 MB to 45 GB over 1 to 30 days, and unlimited for 1 to 30 days with 1 GB a day at full speed; longer validity costs more, and there are no top-ups. ByteSIM's page names Orange, and third-party tests add Bouygues; its own France page also lists a plan with a French number and EU calls as of September 2026, which was not in our tool at export. On price it is at the market average in France. In our hands-on test of ByteSIM checkout demanded a phone number and postal address, the app threw installation errors, and WhatsApp support did not reply in 15 minutes, though this traveler had better luck. ByteSIM suits experienced users who want a local wallet or a short, exact validity.

Providers travelers report from France that we have not tested

Simify, an Australian reseller, has France reviews in our set but no counted reports and no Vefru test. Its travelers, mostly Australians, describe a Camino Francés walk with continuous coverage and two-month unlimited plans across France and Italy, but also patchy signal around Nice over two weeks in November 2025, nothing working on landing in Paris until replacement eSIMs were sent, and French-language texts from Bouygues that puzzled users. Third-party tests report Orange and Bouygues as its networks.

Price per GB in France by eSIM Provider

How much does each provider charge per GB in France? The chart below compares plans of 1 to 10 GB that last 6 to 14 days, the usual range for a one- or two-week trip. Provider websites show only their own plans, so this side-by-side view is one you would otherwise have to calculate yourself. A shorter bar means a lower price per GB.

The tables below pick the best plans at each size from our comparison tool and update on their own. Two patterns from the France data are worth knowing before you read them. Travelers who told us how much they used got through 10 GB in 16 days, 13 GB in two weeks with about 2 GB of that on maps, 3 GB in 21 days of light use, and 35 GB in 12 days while uploading videos daily; this guide to how much data you need turns your own habits into a number. And unlimited is not always the bigger plan: Nomad's unlimited gives 2 GB a day at full speed, so a seven-day plan carries about 14 GB of fast data, while Saily's and Maya Mobile's give 5 GB a day. Best eSIM for Paris, Nice and Southern France

Paris is where almost all the place-level reports come from, 160 of them, and Maya Mobile is the clear pick there. Everywhere else the reports are thin: no provider has three or more reports in any other single place, so the country pick applies, and the paragraphs below say what the few reports and the network data show. Places shared with a neighbouring country are marked and do not count toward any total.

Best eSIM for Paris

Maya Mobile wins Paris with 32 of 33 reports working, and the one miss was a traveler who found the connection going offline at times in central London and central Paris, not a dead eSIM. Ubigi (19 of 21) and Holafly (18 of 20) are close behind. Ubigi's two Paris misses were an intermittent 4G connection in Palaiseau and no data in a few central areas; a few others in the city saw only LTE. Holafly's two were slow data, 3G in the centre in June 2026 and a connection too slow for remote work in July 2026, which matches the speed cap we found in our test. The pattern across all providers is the same: Paris misses are slow or unstable data on crowded cells and in the métro, not missing coverage.

The runners-up had more trouble. Nomad lost 8 of 28 Paris reports: an unstable connection in the suburbs that showed only SFR, signal jumping between 3G and 5G, plans that stopped after two days, and little signal after leaving the airport. GigSky lost 7 of 28, mostly on free Visa-perk plans: maps that would not load, no 5G, days without data, and constant reconnecting. Airalo lost 2 of 10 to very poor service and drops 40% of the time. At Charles de Gaulle, two Nomad travelers activated by QR within minutes of landing, a GigSky traveler was online right away, and a Jetpac traveler used the airport Wi-Fi to get a replacement eSIM from WhatsApp support; nobody reported a provider that failed to connect at the airport itself.

Best eSIM for Nice and the Côte d'Azur

No provider has three reports from Nice, so the country pick, Maya Mobile, applies; Holafly's two Nice reports both worked, including a Paris-to-Nice trip with no issues, and Maya Mobile, GigSky and Airalo each had one Nice report that worked. The lesson of this coast is Monaco. It is a separate country, and travelers on France-only plans lost signal every time they crossed into it: a GigSky traveler found Monaco excluded from the complimentary plan and dropped out along the Côte d'Azur, a GoMoWorld traveler was stuck on 3G there in June 2026, a Nomad traveler reported issues only in Monaco, and an Airalo traveler got no usable data in Monaco and sometimes in Nice and Cannes. A GoMoWorld traveler on the Europe plan, by contrast, had 5G in both Nice and Monaco in December 2024.

A Europe or global plan solves Monaco; Maya Mobile's global unlimited, GoMoWorld's Europe plan, Nomad's Regional Europe and Airalo's Europe plans all cover both. One Maya Mobile traveler in Fréjus could not connect at all in September 2024, the only Riviera miss for the pick. Nice airport sells Orange and SFR SIMs at newsstands and the tourist desk rather than in operator shops, and the ID rule applies there too.

Best eSIM for Southern France

Outside the cities the country pick still applies, but the reports show where each provider thins out. Maya Mobile worked for 2 of 3 travelers in the south; the miss was sporadic reception along the coast in October 2025 that affected two phones. Nomad's one southern report failed, and other Nomad travelers described good data in the cities but poor signal on the roads between them and in rural southern France. Ubigi travelers reported poor connectivity for several days in the south of France and only 3G outside cities, while another had a great connection in the south and in Corsica. Holafly's record in the countryside is the strongest in the reports: remote France and Spain, south-west France, Toulouse, Marseille and Cassis all worked, with one failure across southern France in August 2026.

GigSky's one Provence report worked, with data in rural Provence and over mountain tops at reduced speed. In Marseille, Holafly's two reports and Nomad's one all worked, with one Nomad traveler on 5G almost all the time around the city. The regulator's measurements explain the split: Orange, which Holafly and Airalo use, leads rural voice and web quality, while Ubigi runs on the other three networks [2]. For a trip that leaves the autoroutes, a provider on Orange or on all four networks (Roamless) is the safer bet, and the regulator's address-level map shows which operator reaches a specific village [3].

Local SIM Cards and Operator eSIMs in France

A local SIM beats a travel eSIM in France only when you need a French phone number or bundled EU calls and texts; for data alone, the travel eSIMs above are cheaper than the tourist SIMs sold at the airports. Every operator must record the buyer's identity under the French telecoms code, so a passport is needed at the counter, and an online purchase has to be identified within about 15 days or the line is suspended [6]. There are no operator shops in the arrivals halls at Charles de Gaulle, Orly or Nice; SIMs are sold at Relay newsstands and tourist information desks (Orange and Bouygues at the Paris airports, Orange and SFR at Nice), and eSIMs at the Paris airports only at the tourist desks. Travel guides quote airport counter prices well above the online ones, but we could not confirm them.

Orange Travel (the former Orange Holiday) is the tourist offer with a French number. As of April 2026 its Europe data-only tiers were 1 GB for 7 days at $5.99, 4 GB for 7 days at $9.99, 10 GB for 14 days at $22.99 and 50 GB for 30 days at $49.99, and the tiers with unlimited EU calls and SMS were 20 GB for 14 days at $29.99, 50 GB for 30 days at $53.99, 100 GB for 30 days at $57.99, 200 GB for 30 days at $69.99 and 500 GB for 90 days at $119.99 [8]. Orange's own FAQ defines the Zen pack as 20 GB with 30 minutes and 200 SMS and the Europe pack as 50 GB with 120 minutes and 1,000 SMS; recharging requires ID registration on Orange's travel site.

Free Mobile sells no-commitment plans with eSIM. As of September 2026 its page listed a €2.00 plan with 50 MB and two hours of calls, the Série Free 110 GB 5G plan at €12.99 a month for 12 months then €19.99, the Free 5G+ plan with 350 GB in France and 35 GB of roaming at €19.99 a month, and the Free Max plan with unlimited data at €29.99 a month, launched on 31 Mar 2026; the card itself, physical or eSIM, costs €10.00 once [9]. Bouygues Telecom's My European SIM and eSIM replaced its prepaid card in June 2025; according to a Selectra listing from August 2026 the promotional tiers ran from 15 GB for 15 days at €14.90 up to 120 GB for 30 days at €49.90 with a French number, but we have not confirmed them on Bouygues' own page. SFR La Carte kits start at €4.99 for 40 GB with unlimited calls and SMS for 31 days according to a third-party report citing SFR's May 2025 brochure, also unconfirmed.

Travelers from another EU country do not need any of this: a home SIM keeps working in France at home prices within fair-use limits, and since 1 Jan 2026 the same applies to SIMs from Ukraine and Moldova [7]. For everyone else, a data-only eSIM covers maps, messaging and calls over apps, and the Orange Travel packs are the fallback when a bank or a booking needs a number that can receive an SMS.

Mobile Networks in France

Orange is the network to want outside the cities, and in central Paris, Lyon and Nice it is roughly tied with Bouygues. France has four operators, Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile, and every other brand rides one of them. In the regulator's 2025 campaign of more than a million measurements, Orange led national call quality (91% of calls perfect, against 84% to 88% for the rest), rural call quality (83% against 76% to 79%), rural web browsing and uplink, and it was the only operator to hold more than seven in ten two-minute calls aboard TGV trains; in the Paris métro all four operators kept 96% to 97% of calls [2]. Bouygues led web-page loading in dense areas, and in a third-party study by Opensignal for August to October 2025 it won the most awards, with Orange taking download speed on 5G and Free winning 5G availability.

Who rides what, as far as the sources go: Holafly (its help center) and Airalo (its France page) name Orange; Ubigi names SFR, Free and Bouygues and leaves Orange out; Roamless names all four; ByteSIM names Orange. Everything else is third-party reporting: Orange and Bouygues for Nomad and Yesim, Orange and Free for GoMoWorld, Orange and SFR for Saily, Orange for GigSky and eSIM4Travel, and Free only for Jetpac, while Maya Mobile and Global YO do not name a network on their pages. Several travelers fixed a weak connection by choosing the network by hand in the phone's settings rather than leaving it on automatic; a GoMoWorld user in France counted three networks to choose from, four when forcing Bouygues.

Strictly defined white zones hold about 0.18% of the population, and the regulator's town-centre programme targets roughly 4,000 villages [1]. The 2G network is being switched off: Orange started on 31 Mar 2026 around Bayonne and Biarritz, SFR and Bouygues follow in November and December 2026, and 3G goes in 2028 and 2029 [4]; the regulator counted about two million SIMs still in 2G-only handsets at the end of March 2026 [5]. A travel eSIM on a modern phone is unaffected, but the "3G only" fallback several travelers described in weak spots will disappear with it. The regulator's address-level map compares all four networks for any street you type in [3]. One more thing to know: Orange, Bouygues and Free signed a memorandum of understanding on 6 Jun 2026 to buy SFR between them, with completion targeted for the second half of 2027 according to Orange's own release; nothing is different for a trip this year or next.

How to Set Up an eSIM for France

Install at home on Wi-Fi, before you fly. Almost every provider here starts the plan on first connection in France, not at installation, so there is no cost to setting it up early, and the France reports are full of travelers who were online before the baggage belt moved. The steps:

1. Check that the phone is carrier-unlocked and supports eSIM; a locked phone was behind a Holafly miss and a Nomad traveler's wife could not connect at all. Our guides show the menus for adding an eSIM on an iPhone and adding an eSIM on a Samsung.
2. Buy and install at home. GoMoWorld, Saily, Roamless, GigSky and Global YO sell only through their apps; the rest email a QR code. Two exceptions to the install-early rule: Yesim's plan started at purchase in our test, so buy it close to departure or use its activate-later option, and some Airalo packages start at installation, which the package page says.
3. Set the APN if the provider needs one: "globaldata" for Maya Mobile and Global YO, "gigsky" for GigSky, "mobiledata" for Ubigi; Roamless worked for us only after we picked a different APN from the preselected one. Turn data roaming on for the eSIM and off for your home SIM.
4. On landing, set the eSIM as the mobile data line. GoMoWorld does nothing until you press Start in the app, the most common cause of its "not working" reports. If nothing connects after a few minutes, pick a network by hand in the settings; that fixed GoMoWorld, Roamless and eSIM4Travel connections for travelers in France. A Jetpac traveler's data only flowed once the physical SIM was switched off, and a Nomad traveler advises deleting old expired Nomad eSIMs first so the phone does not pick the wrong one.
5. Mind the activation windows: eSIM4Travel gives 90 days, Nomad's France plans list 30 days in our comparison tool, Ubigi's unscanned QR is valid 6 months, Saily auto-starts after 180 days, and Jetpac keeps unactivated packs 3 months.
6. Plan for running out. GigSky's and Ubigi's apps stay online at zero data so you can buy more without Wi-Fi, Roamless leaves a trickle, and Jetpac keeps WhatsApp and Maps free on packs of 3 GB and up; every other app dies at zero, and Holafly sells no top-ups at all, so a longer stay means a new eSIM. Calls and SMS in France

France's calling code is +33, and almost every eSIM here is data-only, so calls go over WhatsApp, FaceTime or a similar app; the France reports are full of travelers who did exactly that without trouble. The gap shows up with SMS verification: a Maya Mobile traveler in China missed having a local number for app codes, a Nomad traveler found Uber demanding a phone number, and a Maya Mobile traveler could not call an airline. If that matters, there are two routes.

Among the eSIM providers, Airalo's Discover+ global plans are flagged in our comparison tool as including calls and texts, with a US number; Global YO offers outgoing internet calls from its app, and one traveler used them to ring a French landline, though the volume was low; Jetpac sells in-app voice packs, which showed the recipient a US number in our test; Roamless offers in-app calls and an optional second number from the US, Canada, the UK or Australia; Saily sells a US number add-on. ByteSIM's own France page lists a plan with a French number and EU calls as of September 2026, but it was not in our comparison tool when we exported the plans. The other route is a local SIM: Orange Travel's packs with calls include a French number and unlimited EU calls and SMS [8], and Bouygues' My European SIM is reported to include one as well.

Free eSIM Data for France

GigSky is the main source of free data in France. Its own page offers a 100 MB trial on a country plan and up to 500 MB on a Europe plan, and Visa cardholders get free plans through a card perk; a large share of the 65 GigSky reports from France came from those perks, including a complimentary 7-day France unlimited plan, a free 10 GB that lasted a traveler 16 days, and free Paris and International plans used back to back. Nomad lists a 1 GB France trial plan for 3 days in our comparison tool, and Roamless lists a free France trial of about 700 MB that runs for 30 days from activation. GoMoWorld gives a free one-day trial, Jetpac a 100 MB starter eSIM, and Holafly leaves 1 GB a month of free data on an eSIM you keep after the plan ends. Summary: the best eSIM for France

Based on 705 traveler reports and our own tests, Maya Mobile is the best option for most trips to France: it worked well for 155 of 160 travelers, with Paris its strongest city, and its only real limit is that it sells nothing but a global unlimited plan of three days or more. Holafly is the pick for a drive through rural France and across borders, 79 of 84, with its speed capped from the start in our test and a 1 GB-a-day hotspot. Ubigi, 92 of 100, is the cheapest of the three top records, but it leaves Orange out and its help desk did not answer us. GoMoWorld, 25 of 28, is for heavy data users who press Start in the app.
