Pros and Cons
ByteSIM Review Contents
Introduction
ByteSIM is a Hong Kong-based provider of travel eSIM data plans with coverage in more than 200 countries worldwide. If you're planning an international trip and looking for a way to stay connected without excessive roaming charges, a virtual SIM card from ByteSIM might be a suitable option.
ByteSIM stands out from competitors by offering unlimited data plans with 5G speeds and the ability to share your connection through hotspot functionality. Founded by Sunny Wong and Wilming Chou, ByteSIM operates from Hong Kong with a branch office in Shenzhen, focusing on providing travelers with reliable connectivity solutions.
In this review, we'll examine our hands-on experience with ByteSIM - from purchase through installation to actual usage. For quick comparison of all available eSIM options for your destination, we recommend using our eSIM comparison tool, which allows you to filter by desired data size, validity period, and country - even multiple countries at once.

Purchase process
The purchase process for ByteSIM is not as streamlined as it could be. Unlike many other eSIM providers, ByteSIM doesn't offer social login options like Google or Facebook, which means you need to create a separate account.
During our test, we noticed several issues that make the purchase process more complicated than necessary:
- ByteSIM requires your full address and phone number during checkout, which is unusual for an eSIM purchase
- The explanation that the phone number is needed "to ship the order" doesn't make sense for a digital product
- Marketing emails are opt-out rather than opt-in, which may violate GDPR regulations in Europe
- The checkout process appears designed for physical products rather than digital eSIMs
On the positive side, ByteSIM does support Google Pay as a payment method, which simplifies the transaction part of the process. After completing your order, you'll receive a confirmation email stating that the QR code will be sent within 10 minutes.
The post-purchase experience is also somewhat confusing. The website only shows an order confirmation and an option to get updates via SMS. Within 10 minutes, however, you should receive another email with the eSIM QR code image attached.
If you're looking for a simpler purchase process, we recommend using our eSIM comparison tool at vefru.com, which helps you compare different providers and their offerings for your destination.

App
The ByteSIM app experience leaves much to be desired. At first glance, the app appears to be a wrapped website rather than a native application, which affects its usability and responsiveness.
During our testing, we encountered several issues with the app:
- Some buttons are misaligned, giving the app an unpolished appearance
- The login process is confusing - it wasn't immediately clear how to log in
- After some time, a login modal suddenly appeared without any user action
- When trying to install the eSIM, the first attempt showed an error page
- The second attempt displayed an odd interface with one modal on top of another
While Google login eventually worked, it took time to figure out where the login option was located. After logging in, the eSIM was visible in the app, which is a positive aspect.
Attempting to activate the eSIM directly from the app resulted in automatic activation failing. Manual activation was required, which isn't surprising given the earlier app behavior. Our test was conducted on a Samsung S24 Ultra, one of the most common phones, so this issue likely affects many users.
Despite these issues, the app does provide a useful data usage meter that accurately shows your consumption in real-time, which is helpful for managing your data allowance.
For comparison with other eSIM provider apps, check out our reviews of Airalo or Saily, which typically offer more polished mobile experiences.

Installation eSIM
Despite the issues with the ByteSIM app, the manual installation of the eSIM went surprisingly smoothly. After the automatic activation failed, we proceeded with manual installation, which is a standard process on most smartphones.
The installation process involved:
- Using the QR code provided in the email
- Following the standard eSIM installation steps on the device
- Waiting for network registration (approximately one minute)
Once installed, the connection was established quickly and worked reliably. The ByteSIM eSIM connected to the Sunrise network, which is a reputable carrier known for good coverage and reliability.
One disappointing aspect was that despite ByteSIM's promise of 5G connectivity during purchase, our connection was 4G only. We verified that 5G was available in our testing location by checking with a physical SIM from the same network (Sunrise), which confirmed 5G coverage in the area.
While the 4G connection worked well for most purposes, it didn't match the advertised 5G speeds that were promised during purchase. This discrepancy between marketing and actual service is worth noting if you specifically need 5G speeds.

Customer support
Customer support is crucial when using eSIM services abroad, as any connectivity issues can significantly impact your travel experience. Unfortunately, ByteSIM's customer support fell short of expectations in our testing.
ByteSIM offers support through WhatsApp, with two options (WhatsApp 1 and WhatsApp 2) without any explanation of the difference between them. We tested WhatsApp 1 for our support inquiry.
Despite ByteSIM being a Hong Kong-based company and our test being conducted during their business hours (around 6 PM Hong Kong time), and despite their promise of 24/7 support, we received no response after waiting for 15 minutes.
This lack of response is concerning, especially for travelers who might face urgent connectivity issues while abroad. A responsive customer support system is essential for troubleshooting problems that may arise with eSIM activation or data usage.
For comparison, other providers like eSIM4Travel typically offer more responsive customer support, which can be crucial when you're traveling and need assistance quickly. If reliable support is important to you, consider using our eSIM comparison tool to find a provider with better customer service ratings.

Speed tests
Despite the discrepancy between the promised 5G connectivity and the actual 4G connection, ByteSIM delivered impressive speed test results. The 4G connection provided by ByteSIM was not throttled for our 1GB package, allowing us to experience the full speed of the network.
Our speed tests showed:
- Download speed: 175 Mbps
- Upload speed: 66.9 Mbps
These speeds are excellent for most use cases, including video streaming, video calls, social media, and web browsing. While not reaching the potential of 5G networks, which can exceed 1 Gbps in ideal conditions, the 4G speeds provided by ByteSIM were more than adequate for typical travel usage scenarios.
An interesting finding was that our data allowance extended slightly beyond the purchased amount. We were able to use 1.24 GB of data on a 1 GB plan, giving us an extra 240 MB. This generous allowance is a nice bonus, though it's unclear if this is standard practice or specific to our test.
Once the data was exhausted, the connection stopped immediately. ByteSIM does not use zero-rated traffic, meaning the app also stops working when your data runs out. Additionally, ByteSIM doesn't support data top-ups - once your original allocation is exhausted, you need to purchase a new eSIM plan.
The data usage meter in the ByteSIM app was accurate and up-to-date, showing real-time consumption, which helps in managing your data allowance effectively.

Prices
ByteSIM offers competitive pricing for its data packages, which is one of its main advantages. Their pricing structure is particularly attractive for travelers who need large data allowances or unlimited plans.
Key pricing features of ByteSIM include:
- Competitive rates per GB compared to many competitors
- Unlimited data plans available for heavy users
- Plans for single countries and regional/global coverage
- Hotspot/tethering included in many plans
It's important to note that while ByteSIM advertises "unlimited" data plans, these may still be subject to Fair Usage Policies (FUP). According to user reviews and information from ByteSIM, data throttling may occur after heavy usage or during network congestion, particularly when tethering.
One limitation of ByteSIM's pricing model is the lack of top-up options. ByteSIM treats its eSIMs as one-time purchases - you select a plan, use it until expiry or data exhaustion, and then need to purchase a new eSIM rather than adding data to your existing plan. This can be inconvenient if you underestimate your data needs.
For travelers who need to share their connection with multiple devices, ByteSIM's support for hotspot functionality is a significant advantage, though performance may degrade with heavy usage.

Customer feedback
Customer feedback is a crucial indicator of service quality. ByteSIM has an impressive rating of 4.8/5 stars from over 22,000 reviews on Trustpilot, suggesting that the vast majority of customers are satisfied with their services.
Positive feedback often mentions:
- "Fast and reliable data connection across multiple countries"
- "Great value for money compared to local SIM options"
- "Simple to use once installed"
- "Unlimited data plans perform well for most usage scenarios"
Negative feedback typically centers around:
- "Difficult purchase process requiring unnecessary personal information"
- "App issues, particularly with automatic activation"
- "Slow or non-responsive customer support"
- "Throttling on unlimited plans after heavy usage"
The app ratings reflect a mixed experience, with a 4.6/5 rating on iOS from 225 reviews, but a lower 4.0/5 on Android from 1,000 reviews. This suggests that the Android app experience may not be as polished as the iOS version.
Overall, customer feedback aligns with our testing experience - ByteSIM offers excellent data speeds and competitive pricing, but has room for improvement in its purchase process, app functionality, and customer support.
