How to buy a ByteSIM eSIM

1. Pick a destination and plan. Country pages sell daily and fixed plans, and in many countries unlimited ones, usually at validities from 1 to 30 days [7]. Every price is in US dollars.
2. Create an account. Checkout asks for your email, phone number and full postal address. There is no Google or Facebook login at this point. ByteSIM says the phone number is needed to ship the order, which makes no sense for a digital product.
3. Pay. Google Pay is offered, but you still have to fill in the account first. Cards, PayPal, Apple Pay and 50+ local wallets are accepted too (see the list below).
4. Untick the marketing box if you do not want promotional emails. It is an opt-out, not an opt-in, so the emails arrive by default if you overlook it. This is illegal in some countries, for example under GDPR in Europe.
5. Wait for two emails. The first confirms the order and promises the QR code within 10 minutes. The second arrived inside that window in our test, with the eSIM image embedded in the email.

The order page on the website shows only an order confirmation and an offer of updates by SMS, the kind of screen a web shop uses for parcels. ByteSIM runs on SHOPLINE, an e-commerce platform [2], and it shows: the flow is made for physical goods and never quite fits an eSIM. On the plus side, delivery was as fast as promised, and ByteSIM's terms say most eSIMs are available within minutes of confirmation [1].

What payment methods does ByteSIM accept?

• Cards: Visa, Mastercard, JCB and American Express directly; Discover through PayPal [4].
• Wallets: PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay [4].
• Local methods: 50+ options that appear once you enter a billing address, for example iDEAL, Alipay, WeChat Pay, GCash, GrabPay, KakaoPay, Pix and OXXO [4].
• Pay later: Klarna, Afterpay or Clearpay where available, subject to approval [4].
• Currency: US dollars only. Your bank may add currency conversion or cross-border fees [1].
• Security: card details go straight to the payment processor [2], and ByteSIM says it meets PCI DSS Level 1 [4].

ByteSIM also runs a rewards scheme. You get 10 points for signing up and 1 point per dollar spent; 20 points are worth $1.00, so about 5% back [5]. Silver, Gold and Platinum members get 2%, 8% and 15% off every order, though the FAQ does not say how you reach each tier [5]. A referral gives the referrer $3.00 off and the new user $3.00 off orders over $5.00 [5].

One quirk to know: several product pages showed an "Only N left" stock counter next to a "Sold Out" label at the same time, plus an unexplained "$0.00 USD" line. Digital eSIMs do not run out of stock, so treat these counters as scarcity messaging and nothing more.

Verdict: The ByteSIM app does the basics, showing your eSIM and an accurate data meter, but it looks like a wrapped website and its install and activation flow failed in our test.

ByteSIM has apps for iOS and Android, and every order appears there as well as in your email [1]. On our Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, one of the most common phones around, the app looked like a website inside a frame, with some misaligned buttons. The Google Play rating of 3.8 (2,360 ratings) sits well below the App Store's 4.6 (481 ratings), which fits what we saw on Android.

ByteSIM app review: what happened in our test

• Login: signing in with a Google account worked, but it took a while to find the login option. At one point the login window simply appeared on its own, which was confusing.
• eSIM list: once logged in, the eSIM we had bought was visible.
• Install: the first attempt to install from the app showed an error page. The second opened one pop-up on top of another.
• Activation: automatic activation from the app failed. We installed the eSIM manually instead, which worked (see the next section).
• Data meter: the usage counter was accurate and updated in real time, so you can see how much is left at any moment.
• Out of data: when the plan ran out, the app stopped working too, because ByteSIM does not exempt its own app from the data limit.

Two app features from the FAQ are worth knowing [5]. If you lose your QR code, log in to the app with your order email to find it again. On iOS 17.4 or later, the app offers a one-tap install. Neither fixes the core problem, which is that the app failed at the one job that matters, getting the eSIM active.

How to install a ByteSIM eSIM on iPhone or Samsung

1. Check your phone. It must have eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. ByteSIM's device list covers about 30 brands, iPhone XR and XS onward and cellular iPads [10]. Apple Watch is not on it, and most dual-physical-SIM iPhones sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau have no eSIM at all [10].
2. Open the delivery email or the app. Most eSIMs arrive within minutes as a QR code, and every order is listed in the app; some plans use scheduled delivery, an identity check or a direct push to the device instead [1].
3. Add the eSIM. Scan the QR code from another screen, or enter the SM-DP+ address manually; iPhones on iOS 17.4 or later can use one-tap install from the app [5]. If you have never done this, our guides show where the setting lives on a Samsung phone and on an iPhone.
4. Switch on data roaming for the ByteSIM line. Most plans start automatically on first connection at the destination with roaming on, and some must be activated within 180 days of purchase [5]. The main exception is the USA calling plans: they start on a date you pick, at least 2 days after purchase, between 00:00 and 09:00 US Pacific time [9].
5. Wait about a minute. In our test the network became available after roughly a minute, and data worked right after.

A few rules from the Terms and FAQ are worth knowing before you scan. A QR code can be scanned on one device only, and deleting the eSIM or swapping phones may make reinstalling impossible [1]. Device transfer is possible only for some products, an expired unused QR code can be reissued, and laptops with eSIM work too [5]. Most plans need no ID or passport [7], though some products require identity verification, an IMEI or an EID before the eSIM is issued [1].

ByteSIM 5G not working? Here is what we saw

ByteSIM promised 5G when we bought the plan, but the eSIM only ever showed 4G. We know the spot has 5G, because our physical SIM on the same Sunrise network showed a 5G signal in the same place. A phone restart was next on our list, but as far as the test went, the 5G claim did not hold.

The Terms leave ByteSIM room here: 5G is available only where specifically included, and it also depends on local coverage, device and carrier policy [1]. In practice the 4G we got was fast (see the speed test), so for maps, messaging and video calls you will not miss 5G. If you are paying extra for it, read what 5G actually adds on a trip first.

• Live chat: the contact page's metadata mentions a chat button, but none was visible on the page.

ByteSIM's About page says a typical first reply takes under 5 minutes, though actual times may vary [11], and the Terms promise 24/7 help with delivery, installation, activation and connectivity questions [1]. The About page adds that the support is human. That is a high bar, so we tested it the way any customer would.

How fast does ByteSIM support reply?

1. We messaged WhatsApp 1 about our eSIM at around 6 PM Hong Kong time, an ordinary evening hour for a Hong Kong company that promises 24/7 support.
2. After 15 minutes there was still no reply, so we moved on to the other tests.

That is the opposite of what customers report: quick WhatsApp replies, even late at night, are the most praised thing about ByteSIM on Trustpilot (see Customer feedback below). One test is one data point, so read our result as a warning rather than a final verdict. Still, a 24/7 service with a 5-minute promise should not miss a 15-minute window.

How fast is ByteSIM?

We ran the speed test on the 1 GB plan on the Sunrise network, on 4G because the promised 5G never appeared. ByteSIM did not limit the speed of the small plan, so the numbers below are the full 4G speed available at that spot.

175 Mbps down and 66.9 Mbps up covers anything a traveler does, from HD video to sharing the connection with a laptop. For comparison, ByteSIM's own fallback speed after a daily or total quota is 128 kbps [7]. In our test the app went offline as soon as the data ran out, so we saw no sign of that fallback.

What happens when ByteSIM data runs out

• You get a little extra. The plan cut off after 1.24 GB, 240 MB more than the 1 GB we bought.
• The app stops at once. It went offline with the data, because ByteSIM does not exempt its own app traffic from the limit. Without Wi-Fi you cannot check your balance or buy anything.
• No top-up. ByteSIM's FAQ and product pages say plans cannot be topped up or extended, so you buy a new eSIM [5] [7]. A guide on ByteSIM's blog describes a Top Up button on some plans, but we saw no way to buy more data once ours ran out.
• The meter is accurate. The usage counter in the app tracked our consumption in real time, so you will see the end coming if you look.

Plan for that: buy more than you expect to use, and pick the size with our guide to how much data a trip needs. Unlimited plans are the other way around the problem. Customers report that some slow down after 1 GB a day, and the Terms let carriers apply daily high-speed allowances and temporary speed cuts even on "unlimited" plans [1].

How much does a ByteSIM eSIM cost?

ByteSIM sells every data size at 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20 and 30 days, which is why Japan and China each have 93 plans and the median country 67. Unlike most providers, it charges extra for a longer validity: the same data for 30 days instead of 3 costs 27 to 42% more. The table shows the median price across all countries in our price database as of 2 Oct 2026; the median fixed plan overall was $25.00, or $1.90 per GB.

Moving up the ladder gets cheaper per gigabyte. Going from 3 to 5 GB costs 1.45 times as much (+$3.80), 5 to 10 GB 1.7 times (+$6.30), 10 to 20 GB 1.8 times (+$11.00) and 30 to 50 GB 1.5 times (+$19.00). Each extra GB costs about $1.90 at the bottom and $0.95 at the top. Odd sizes exist too (1.5, 2.5, 7.5, 8, 14, 21, 45, 60 and 90 GB), and a few countries go up to 100 to 300 GB.

Daily plans are the other half of the catalog: 3,798 plans with a daily quota for 1 to 30 days. The most common are 500 MB a day (132 countries, median $1.50 a day) and 1 GB a day (142 countries, $2.41 a day). The 2 GB, 3 GB and 10 GB daily quotas cost a median $2.30, $2.70 and $3.70 a day. On the Japan SoftBank daily plans the quota resets at 23:00 Japan time [7], so check when your day resets before you rely on a fresh allowance.

Unlimited plans exist in 91 countries. Most are flagged as throttled without a stated limit; ByteSIM's product pages promise 1080p streaming even under fair use [7], while its FAQ says carriers may slow heavy users for about a day [5]. Ten plans are unthrottled, among them the Japan 5G Ultra plan on KDDI. A 30-day unlimited plan costs about 1.3 times the 50 GB plan, so it only pays off above roughly 64 GB.

A few plans add calls and SMS. In our database the US unlimited plan with calls and SMS was $13.00 for 5 days, and Mauritius 15 GB with 15 minutes and 50 SMS was $39.90 for 30 days. The USA calling eSIM, with a selectable 10 to 85 days, showed $27.90 on its product page [9]. On the site, Japan plans start from $2.90 [7] and the Global eSIM product page showed $24.90 [8].

Is ByteSIM cheap in your destination?

Where you go matters more than how much you buy. The table compares ByteSIM's cheapest suitable plan with the typical (median) price of all providers for the same country, data amount and trip length, pooled across all sizes and lengths, as of 2 Oct 2026.

The pattern is clear: competitive across much of Asia and Europe and in the US, expensive in Africa, Latin America, Canada and India. The biggest outliers are Tajikistan, Fiji and the Bahamas, where ByteSIM's plans cost two and a half to three times the typical price. Terrible internet connection in Bali and Nusa Penida, I do not recommend to buy an esim from ByteSIM if you are going to use it in Bali. I contacted the support team, and they promptly replied but it did not get better. In Jacarta the connection was fine.

Used 2 esim in our 2 weeks trip to USA. For the second esim I have some issues with the activation so I contacted the support number by whatsapp and in 5 minutes the number was activated. The internet speed is great, the network is 5G almost everywhere. And the prices are great too, especially because you can choose the number of days you want you esim to be active (from 1 day to 1 month). I totally recomend it!

Which countries does ByteSIM cover?

ByteSIM sells single-country eSIMs and zone bundles. We counted 198 single-destination eSIMs on the site, plus a few places reached only through bundles, which adds up to about 209 destinations if territories like the Canary Islands and Northern Cyprus count separately. The Global eSIM lists 137 countries but leaves out Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore, Taiwan and Indonesia [8], so check its list before buying it for an Asia trip.

Product pages name the networks: KDDI and SoftBank in Japan [7], AT&T on the USA calling plan [9]. Popular places with no ByteSIM eSIM include Cuba, Myanmar, Lebanon and Iran. ByteSIM's FAQ also warns that WhatsApp voice and video calls are restricted in the UAE, Qatar and Oman [5].

Where ByteSIM works according to travelers

The box below is built from traveler reports (did the eSIM work, yes or no) for ByteSIM, compared with the other 13 providers in the same places. As of 1 Oct 2026 ByteSIM worked in 597 of 679 reports (88%) across 77 countries, against 85% for all providers pooled. Read the tiers first, then look up your own destination; a country with fewer than five reports tells you little.

• Very reliable: Japan, 76 of 81 reports (94%); South Korea, 33 of 33 (100%); Singapore, 16 of 16 (100%); Hong Kong, 16 of 16 (100%).

Verdict: Hong Kong law, a liability cap and no cash value for store credit on one side; a 180-day refund window, no refund fee and no forced arbitration on the other.

Is ByteSIM legit? The company behind the site

ByteSIM is ByteSim Limited, registration number 74790360, at the China Resources Building in Wan Chai, Hong Kong [1]. The contact page adds a branch office in Shenzhen and a mainland China phone number [6]. You must be 18 or the local age of majority to buy, though a parent, employer or travel agency may buy for someone else [1].

Two contradictions on the site matter more than any single clause. The refund policy gives 180 days for a full refund on an unused eSIM [3], yet the USA calling eSIM is marked non-refundable once the order is confirmed [9]. And while the Global eSIM page says hotspot is included on all plans [8], the USA calling plan caps it at 10 GB [9].

ByteSIM privacy policy: what it collects

The policy lists device identifiers (ICCID, IMEI, EID), APN and roaming settings, approximate location and browsing events among the data collected, and says data may be shared with analytics and advertising providers, including Google [2]. No retention periods are fixed and no Hong Kong regulator is named; EEA and UK users get GDPR-style legal bases [2]. ByteSIM's Google Play listing, by contrast, declares that the app collects and shares no data, which does not square with the policy.

Verdict: ByteSIM is a fairly priced, fast eSIM for people who already know their way around eSIMs; first-timers will have an easier time elsewhere.

ByteSIM earns a Vefru test score of 6.3 out of 10. The data was quick, the meter honest, the catalog huge and the price right for a 3 to 5 GB short trip. What drags it down is everything around the data. The checkout is built for parcels, the app failed to activate the eSIM, the 5G promise did not hold in our test, and support did not answer in 15 minutes.

Customers see it differently. Their 4.8 on Trustpilot rests on fast WhatsApp help and easy installs, and traveler reports put ByteSIM above the market average, with Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong close to flawless. So the gap between our 6.3 and their praise is mostly about the rough edges you meet before the eSIM is active, not about the connection itself.

Who should buy a ByteSIM eSIM?

If you have installed an eSIM before, there is no reason to be afraid of ByteSIM; buy a bit more data than you need and install it manually.
