Finding the best eSIM for Madrid starts at Barajas. Press reports of Aena's 2025 results put Madrid-Barajas at 68.18 million passengers, the busiest airport in Spain. Madrid also has more traveler reports in our data than any other Spanish place: 32 of them.

Those 32 reports are far from uniform. Nomad worked for 9 of 10 Madrid travelers, while Airalo worked for 0 of 5. Spanish networks are not the weak link, since they carried a record 96.8 million international tourists in 2025, according to INE. Global YO is our Spain-wide pick and the cheapest tested provider we track there. Our review data lists 5 GB for 15 days at $3.15 and 10 GB for 30 days at $5.40 in Spain (as of August 2026). It worked for 23 of 25 travelers across Spain and scored 8.0 in our test, with 10 for price and 9 for installation.

No review names Madrid, and most of its Spain reviews date from 2024 and 2025. The newest, from August 2026, rated Spain only okay and speeds below what the carriers can deliver. Holafly is the only provider here whose Spain page names its partners: Orange, Movistar, Vodafone and Yoigo (checked August 2026). Orange and Yoigo share one network, so that is three physical networks. It worked for 6 of 7 Madrid travelers and 60 of 67 across Spain, including a 71-year-old who used it in Madrid, Seville, Porto and Paris without trouble.

The Madrid failure was about speed: a Peruvian traveler struggled with Maps and WhatsApp voice messages over 12 days in Madrid and London. Nomad has Madrid's largest positive sample: 9 of 10 reports worked, backed by 71 of 84 across Spain. Travelers describe good data in Madrid on multi-city trips with Rome, Barcelona and Paris. One got only 4G across Madrid, Zaragoza and Valencia, which was still enough for maps and search.

Two warnings. One traveler had no signal inside Madrid airport until reaching the street, and another found weak spots not far from the center. Its Spain page did not name a network when we checked in August 2026. Our test scored Nomad 6.8, with 144 Mbps download (measured outside Spain) but 2 out of 10 for support. GoMoWorld was the fastest eSIM in our test, reaching 1,350 Mbps near a 5G mast with no slowdown after 10 GB in one day (tested outside Spain). It scored 8.2 and worked for 18 of 22 travelers in Spain, though none of them name Madrid.

Yesim is the only tested provider with no failed report anywhere in Spain: 16 of 16. That is a limited sample, and none of those reports names Madrid. Yesim's own blog says it uses Movistar, Orange and Vodafone, which we could not confirm on a product page.

Saily has the best app we tested (9 out of 10) and a perfect 10 for support, which is why its 8.5 score sits second only to eSIM4Travel. As of August 2026, 5 GB for 30 days costs $9.99, and its Spain page allows unlimited hotspot use.

GigSky worked for all 4 Madrid travelers who mention it and 26 of 33 across Spain. One switched it on after landing and had fast data right away; another used it every day in Madrid and Lisbon. It scored 7.2 in our test, with 9 for support, and its app still opens after your data runs out.

The weak spot is speed. A Canadian kept dropping to 3G in Madrid and had to pick a network by hand to get 5G back, and another reviewer found it spotty in Madrid and London. Its free trial is covered below, and our GigSky review has the rest.

Airalo has the worst Madrid record in our data: 0 of 5 reports worked, and 21 of 51 across Spain. Madrid reviewers describe a family where one of four eSIMs never connected, and a traveler stranded on arrival who could not find the eSIM in his settings.

Its Spanish networks are unclear: three accounts contradict each other, and a third party says Airalo's chat declined to name them in August 2026. Jetpac, eSIM4Travel and Untested Providers in Madrid

Three more tested providers matter less for Madrid. Jetpac (6.7) worked for 14 of 16 Spain travelers, and plans of 3 GB or more keep WhatsApp and Google Maps running after your data ends. eSIM4Travel has our top score, 8.8, but its only Spain report is a failed one from Barcelona, too few to judge. ByteSIM (5.3) is not in our Spain report data.

Four providers we have not tested yet post strong Spain numbers, so we list them without ranking them. Maya Mobile worked for 127 of 131 travelers, Ubigi for 42 of 46 (2 of 2 in Madrid), Simify for 19 of 21 (4 of 4 in Madrid) and Roamless for 13 of 14. Unlimited plans help if you stream on the train or tether all day. Check the daily full-speed allowance first.

Madrid's positive reports come mostly from Nomad (9 of 10), Holafly (6 of 7) and GigSky (4 of 4). Simify and Ubigi add six clean reports but are not tested by us yet. Pick Nomad for the best city record, or Holafly if named networks matter more than price.

Madrid Compared With Barcelona and the North

Barcelona's 27 reports look weaker, with Holafly at 5 of 7, so the same eSIM can feel different on the coast. Heading north instead? Holafly worked for all 5 Camino de Santiago walkers in our data, and Nomad for both Pyrenees reports.

Spanish Mobile Networks in Madrid: Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and Digi

Four companies own mobile networks in Spain: Movistar (Telefónica), MasOrange (the Orange and Yoigo brands on one network), Vodafone España and Digi, which builds its own 5G but leans on Movistar elsewhere. A travel eSIM rents space on one or more of them. Two brand names like Orange and Yoigo still mean one physical network.

Movistar has the best test record. Opensignal's May 2026 report gave it the top download speed, 96.7 Mbps against 66.8 Mbps for Orange, and Ookla named it the best Spanish network for the first half of 2025. Digi won both Opensignal 5G speed awards, but its own network is small. Of the providers here, only Holafly confirms Movistar on its Spain page.

In Madrid, several reviews describe phones falling back to 3G or 4G. Choosing a network by hand fixed it for one GigSky user, and our guide to multi-network eSIMs shows how. How Much Data You Need for a Madrid Trip

Madrid days are phone-heavy: Metro routes, museum QR tickets, restaurant bookings and maps until late. Spain reports in our data give a real range. One GoMoWorld customer used 4 GB of a 15 GB plan on a whole Spain trip, while a Nomad user near Alicante burned about 2 GB a day, mostly on Google Maps.

Day Trips From Madrid: Toledo, Segovia, Seville and Lisbon

Toledo, Segovia, El Escorial and Ávila are all in Spain, so your Spain plan keeps working. Trains are the patchy part. One GigSky traveler lost data on and off on the high-speed train from Madrid to Barcelona, but not between Madrid and Seville. Download tickets and maps before you board.

A border crossing needs a plan that lists both countries. Prepaid SIM in Madrid vs a Travel eSIM, Plus Free Trial Data

Spanish prepaid is cheap. In August 2026 the comparison site Kelisto listed Movistar at €10.00 for 60 GB and Orange at €10.00 for 60 GB plus a 20 GB bonus, both with a Spanish number. You need a passport, because Spanish law has required ID for every SIM since 2007, but no NIE. Counters exist at Barajas; one source puts airport prices 30% to 50% above city shops, which we could not confirm.

Local prepaid wins if you will pass an operator store anyway and need more than 20 GB or a Spanish number for Bizum, Renfe or SMS codes. For a short stay the travel eSIM wins: no queue, no passport check, data on landing. Our eSIM vs SIM comparison goes further.

How to Set Up Your eSIM Before Landing at Madrid-Barajas

Install at home on Wi-Fi before you fly, so any problem gets fixed from your sofa rather than the arrivals hall.

1. Check your phone. It needs eSIM hardware and no carrier lock. Our list of eSIM phones helps.
2. Install on home Wi-Fi. Use the app or scan the QR code with our iPhone or Samsung walkthrough. Only got a code? Turn it into a QR code.
