Global YO worked in 23 of 25 Spain reports, 92%. Of providers we have tested hands-on, only Yesim did better, and on a much smaller sample. It also scored 8.0 out of 10 in our testing, with an install we rated 9 out of 10 and prices that are often the lowest on the market. Our speed tests came back between 74 and 150 Mbps, which is more than enough for maps, video calls and streaming.
The catch is the app. You cannot buy on the website, only in the app. The app also stops working once your data runs out, so top up before you hit zero. The help desk was the weakest part of our test at 5 out of 10, with slow and generic replies. Trustpilot puts Global YO at 4.1 from 1,391 reviews. The app is clean, install runs from inside the app, and a VPN and ad blocker are built in. We measured 174 Mbps on a 5G network. Our Spain field data is thinner than we would like: 6 of 7 reports worked, with positive results on Tenerife and Gran Canaria and one failure on Lanzarote. GoMoWorld posted the best speed result we have ever recorded from a travel eSIM: 1,350 Mbps down and 106 Mbps up next to a 5G tower. What happened next matters more. We pushed over 10 GB through it in a single day and the speed never dropped, which puts it ahead of almost everyone else here.
In Spain, 18 of 22 reports worked. Travelers reported it fine in Málaga and northern Spain, with one failure on the Costa Brava. Prices are among the best on the market and the app is clean. The trade-offs are real: no QR code by email, so you need the app. The app also goes dark when your data runs out, and human help is only available Monday to Friday. Holafly is the only provider in this guide that publishes which Spanish carriers it uses: Orange, Movistar, Vodafone and Yoigo. Orange and Yoigo share one physical network, so that is three real networks, and one of them is Movistar, the strongest in the country. The field data matches. Holafly worked in 60 of 67 Spain reports, including 5 out of 5 on the Camino de Santiago, plus positive reports from the Pyrenees, Andalusia, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife. One walker reported a solid 5G connection on remote stretches of the Northern Camino.
That reach costs you speed and money. We measured about 30 Mbps, well below what the same phone gets on a local plan. Holafly may also slow you further after roughly 4.5 GB in a day. Plans are unlimited only, so a short trip gets expensive, and the hotspot is capped at 1 GB per day pooled across the plan (a 7-day plan gives you 7 GB to share). Two more things to check before you buy: their own FAQ states the eSIM will not work for EU residents inside the EU, and the eSIM cannot be reinstalled once installed, so deleting it or switching phones mid-trip leaves you stuck. Yesim has the cleanest Spain record of any provider in this guide. Sixteen traveler reports, all sixteen worked. That includes 3 out of 3 in Barcelona and 4 out of 4 across Tenerife, Lanzarote and the Canary Islands, the best island result of any provider we have tested. Its app ratings agree: 4.7 on Google Play from 25,400 reviews and 4.6 on the App Store.
So why is it not our top pick? Two of our six test categories pull it down hard. Yesim scored 2 out of 10 for customer service, the lowest mark we give any provider, and 6 out of 10 for its purchase flow. Prices scored 6, so it sits mid-table rather than cheap. Yesim says it runs on Movistar, Orange and Vodafone in Spain, but only in its own marketing, not on the product page, so treat that as a claim rather than a confirmed fact.

Airalo is the best-known name in travel eSIMs and has the weakest Spain record in our data. Only 21 of 51 reports worked, which is 41%. The city breakdown is worse than the average suggests: 0 of 5 in Madrid, 0 of 2 in Palma de Mallorca, 0 of 1 in Valencia and 1 of 3 in Barcelona. Traveler reviews that mention Spain average 2.6 out of 5, against 4.0 for Airalo overall.
The pattern in those reports is consistent and unusual. People describe full signal bars with nothing loading, not a missing signal. One traveler had 17.8 GB left of a 20 GB plan and still could not connect. Many say the same eSIM worked fine in Spain a year or two earlier, which points at the wholesale carrier behind the plan rather than at phones or settings.
This is not a general verdict on Airalo. Its overall score with us is 7.33 out of 10, carried by a 9 for the purchase flow and a 9 for installation, and it performs well in many other countries. It does score 4 out of 10 on price, so even at its best it is one of the more expensive options here. For Spain specifically, we would buy something else. Jetpac sits fourth in the table at 14 of 16 Spain reports and solves a problem most rivals have. On plans over 3 GB it zero-rates WhatsApp and Google Maps, so those two keep working after your data allowance is gone. That is worth real money on a trip where the alternative is a dead phone until you find Wi-Fi. We score it 6.67, marked down for a confusing interface and slow replies from its help desk.
eSIM4Travel is our top-scoring provider overall at 8.80, with 10 out of 10 for both price and customer service. It works entirely through the website, with no app to install. We have almost no Spain field data for it, so we cannot vouch for the local carrier, but if you want cheap data and a real person on the other end of the line it is worth a look. One warning about the word "unlimited". Nomad slows you to 512 kbps after 2 GB in a day, Saily after 1 GB, and Holafly reserves the right to slow you after roughly 4.5 GB. Of the unlimited plans we have tested, only GoMoWorld held full speed past 10 GB in a single day. For most Spain trips a fixed 5 or 10 GB plan gives you faster data for less money.
Best eSIM for Barcelona, Madrid and the Spanish Islands
Country averages hide a lot. The same eSIM can be excellent in Madrid and useless in a village two hours away, because Spanish carriers do not all reach the same places. Here is what the traveler reports say, place by place, with the raw counts so you can weigh them yourself.
One gap worth flagging: Global YO, our overall pick, does not appear below, because none of its 25 Spain reports names a city. Its country-level record is strong, but we cannot tell you how it performs in one specific place, and we would rather say that than guess.

Best eSIM for the Canary Islands and the Balearics
Three of Spain's eight busiest airports are on islands, so a lot of visitors never touch the mainland network at all. The islands are included in every Spain plan, but results split more sharply there than anywhere else.
Across Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and the Canaries as a whole, Yesim went 4 for 4 and Holafly 3 for 3. Saily managed 2 of 3, failing on Lanzarote. Ubigi went 0 for 2, failing on both Tenerife and Fuerteventura, and one traveler measured 2 Mbps on Tenerife. In the Balearics, Nomad is the only tested provider with a real record, at 3 of 4 on Mallorca, while Airalo went 0 for 3 across Mallorca and Palma. If you are island-hopping by ferry, GigSky is the only provider here that covers the crossing itself.
Two failure patterns worth knowing
Airalo fails where you would least expect it. Its zero results come from Madrid, Palma de Mallorca and Valencia, three of the best-covered places in the country. That is not a coverage problem, because coverage in central Madrid is excellent for everyone else. It looks like a capacity or wholesale routing problem, and it is why we moved Airalo down the list for Spain despite a decent overall score.
Ubigi does the opposite, and the reason is documented. Ubigi worked in 42 of 46 Spain reports, but every recorded failure sits outside the big cities: Alcúdia, San Sebastián, Tarragona, Montblanc, Fuerteventura and Tenerife. Ubigi publishes its Spanish partners as Orange and Yoigo. Both brands run on the MasOrange network, so despite two names it is one physical network with nothing to fall back on.
Three more names deserve a mention even though we have not bought and tested them yet. Maya Mobile has the strongest raw record in our Spain dataset at 127 of 131 reports, Simify managed 19 of 21 including a clean 4 of 4 in Madrid, and Roamless 13 of 14. We will not recommend a provider we have not tested ourselves, but the numbers are there. You can see the full picture in our eSIM statistics by country.
Spanish Mobile Networks and Which eSIM Rides Them
Spain has four companies that own mobile networks, and the differences between them are bigger than most travel sites admit. Movistar belongs to Telefónica and has the deepest rural reach. MasOrange runs one network under three consumer names: Orange, Yoigo and MásMóvil. Vodafone España has been owned by Zegona since 2024. Digi is building its own network but roams on Movistar for most of the country.
Independent measurement points one way. In Opensignal's May 2026 report for Spain, Movistar won download speed outright at 96.7 Mbps, with Orange second at 66.8 Mbps. Movistar also took the awards for upload, video, games and reliability. Digi won both 5G speed awards, but its own network is small and urban by design, so it is not a realistic target for a travel eSIM.
Why the network matters more outside the cities
The regulator CNMC published its first rural quality report in April 2026, based on drive tests across around 1,000 municipalities. It found 4G is effectively everywhere, and 94% of rural municipalities have three mobile networks available. But only 15.4% of rural municipalities have three 5G networks, against 49.7% of urban ones.
In a Spanish village, your practical choice of 5G network often comes down to one. If your eSIM rides a carrier that is thin there, you get slow data or nothing, while the person next to you on a different network is fine. That is exactly the pattern in the Ubigi reports above.
Almost nobody tells you which carrier they use
We checked the Spain pages of 27 eSIM providers. Exactly two name their Spanish partner carriers: Holafly lists Orange, Movistar, Vodafone and Yoigo, and Ubigi lists Orange and Yoigo. Saily, Nomad, GigSky, Airalo and the rest say nothing, or say something vague about "local network providers".
When you do get a list, count networks, not brand names. Only Movistar, MasOrange and Vodafone are physically separate, so a plan naming two MasOrange brands has no real backup behind it. Will you get 5G, and does your phone still work?
5G is widespread in Spanish cities and along the main tourist coasts. Whether you get it depends on your phone, on whether your plan includes 5G, and on where you are standing. GoMoWorld, Saily, Jetpac and GigSky all connected at 5G in our lab testing, though that was not measured in Spain, so treat it as what the provider allows rather than what Spain delivers. Spanish operators are switching off their 3G networks on different timelines, and no single national date applies. A 3G-only handset may simply fail to connect. Turn on VoLTE in your phone settings before you fly, and check our list of phones that work with eSIM if you are unsure about your device.
How Much Data Do You Need in Spain?
Spain is an easy country for light data use. Hotels, bars and restaurants have Wi-Fi almost everywhere, and maps plus messaging burn very little, so most travelers need less than they expect.
- 1 to 2 GB: a long weekend in one city, using maps, WhatsApp and occasional browsing. See what 2 GB gets you.
- 5 GB: a week across two or three cities with photos, social media and a little streaming. See what 5 GB gets you.
- 10 GB: two weeks, or a road trip where maps run all day. See what 10 GB gets you.
- 20 GB or unlimited: video calls, hotspotting a laptop, or a stay of a month or more.

One seasonal note: Spanish arrivals peak hard in August, at 11.3 million against 5.3 million in December. Coastal and island networks slow down under that load, so in July and August it is worth paying a little more for a provider with more than one network behind it rather than the cheapest plan on the list.
eSIM, Spanish SIM Card or Roaming?
An eSIM is not always the right answer for Spain. Here is when it is not.
If you live in the EU, check your own plan first
EU roaming rules mean your home plan works in Spain at domestic rates, with no extra charge for calls, texts or data up to your fair-use limit. For most EU residents on a normal contract that is enough for a week in Spain, and buying an eSIM adds nothing. Check your operator's roaming data cap before you decide.
A Spanish prepaid SIM is far cheaper per GB
If you need a lot of data or a Spanish number, local prepaid wins on price and it is not close. Around €10 buys roughly 60 GB on Movistar prepaid, with a Spanish number and national calls included. No travel eSIM in this guide gets near that per GB.
You do need identity registration, which has been law since 2007. A passport is accepted, and you do not need an NIE. Buy in a city-centre operator store, an estanco (a licensed tobacconist) or a supermarket. Airport counters exist at Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga and Palma, but prices there reportedly run 30% to 50% above the same plan in town.
When the eSIM is the better buy
The travel eSIM is not competing on price per GB. It competes on skipping the queue, not handing over a passport, and having data the moment the plane doors open. Buy one if your trip is short, if you need under about 10 GB, if you are crossing borders, or if you simply do not want to spend an hour of your holiday in a phone shop. How to Set Up Your Spain eSIM
The whole thing takes about five minutes and is best done at home on Wi-Fi, before you fly. Do not wait until you land, because most provider apps need an internet connection to hand over the eSIM. If eSIMs are new to you, our complete eSIM guide covers how the technology works.
- Check your phone. It has to be eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked. Our list of phones that work with eSIM covers current models.
- Buy the plan before departure and install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. Installing does not always start the clock, but check the activation rules for your provider.

- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line. This is the single most common reason an eSIM looks broken in Spain. Keep roaming off for your home line so it costs you nothing.
- Land and switch over. Set the eSIM as your mobile data line. Most connect within a minute or two of leaving airplane mode.
Give it a few minutes inside the terminal before you worry. One traveler reported no signal at all inside Madrid airport until they stepped outside, then a normal connection. If you have bars but nothing loads, select a network manually instead of automatically. That fix worked for a traveler stuck on 3G in Madrid.
