Best eSIM for Bordeaux (2026): Tested Providers for the City and the Vineyards

František Macháček
Best eSIM in French Cities

Key Takeaways

Key Takeaways

For Bordeaux we recommend GigSky, the one provider with a clean Bordeaux report and an Orange connection for the vineyards. Wine-country trips leave the city fast, and Orange is the operator with the best rural scores in the regulator's 2025 test.

  • A Bordeaux visitor had no problems connecting or using data; 28 of 33 France reports are positive.
  • 9/10 for customer support in our test. A free 100 MB trial eSIM that needs no card.
  • Drawback: speed scored 6/10, and one traveler averaged 3.5 Mbps across several European cities.
  • For a faster paid plan, eSIM4Travel won our test at 8.8 on Orange with the lowest prices. For unlimited data, Holafly worked across France for one couple, including a monastery outside Bordeaux.

Bordeaux: Tram City in the Middle of Wine Country

Bordeaux is two hours from Paris by TGV and an easy city to move through. Tram A runs from the airport to the center, and Rue Sainte-Catherine is a kilometre of shops without a car in sight.

The city is the easy part. Most trips head out to the Médoc châteaux, the Entre-deux-Mers villages, the Dune du Pilat or the Dordogne, and that is where the network shows. One Ubigi customer called coverage in Bordeaux pretty poor, and another had nothing in Créon, a wine village 25 kilometres east.

Vefru buys every eSIM we review with our own money and tests checkout, installation, speed and a support ticket. For Bordeaux we read every report naming the city, Créon or the south-west, then used the regulator's rural measurements to fill the gaps. The named sample is small and we say so. Prices update live in our France eSIM comparison tool.

How well each provider's eSIM works in France

The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in France. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

Which eSIM Providers Are Cheapest in France?

Providers sell different amounts of data at different prices, so price per GB is the fairest way to compare them. Each bar below shows a provider's median price per GB for its France plans with 1 to 10 GB of data and 6 to 14 days of validity, which covers most one- and two-week trips. The shorter the bar, the less you pay for each GB. A France plan costs the same wherever you use it in the country, so these prices apply to Bordeaux too.

    Generated 05.10.2026 19:47

A low price per GB isn't the whole story. Compare it with how often each provider worked for travelers in France in the chart above, and check the speed caps and plan sizes in the provider sections below before you buy.

Bordeaux eSIM Plans at a Glance

A France plan bought for Bordeaux covers the Médoc, Saint-Émilion, Arcachon, the Dordogne, the Basque coast and the rest of metropolitan France. It stops at the Spanish border, so a San Sebastián day trip needs a Europe or two-country plan.

Networks Around Bordeaux: Why Orange Matters in the Vineyards

Travel eSIMs in France rent capacity from Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom or Free Mobile. In the center of Bordeaux all four are strong. The gap opens in the countryside, which is where a wine trip spends its days. The regulator's 2025 campaign measured rural perfect-quality calls at 83% for Orange, 79% for SFR, 77% for Bouygues and 76% for Free.

Rural upload speed shows the same order: Orange 14 Mbit/s, SFR 11, Bouygues 9, Free 8. On high-speed trains, which is how most people reach Bordeaux, Orange held 74% of two-minute calls against 56% for SFR. A plan that uses Orange, or one that switches between two networks, is the sensible choice. Our guide to multi-network eSIMs shows how the switch works.

The Bordeaux reviews split along exactly that line. A GigSky customer had a great data plan with no problems connecting, and a Holafly user had excellent service around France, including a Buddhist monastery outside the city. Both run on Orange. A Ubigi customer described pretty poor coverage in Bordeaux, and another in Créon had no working connection at all. Ubigi never uses Orange.

Further out, the picture stays consistent. A Ubigi customer touring rural France, with Orange showing on her phone, found the eSIM did not work at all. That is what happens when the plan cannot use the only strong network in view. Nomad users report excellent signal from the north of France to the Pyrenees, and a Simify customer walking the Camino into Spain stayed connected for 38 days.

The regulator counts about 4,000 small town centres in France with weak coverage on at least one operator, roughly 1% of the population. Many are exactly the kind of village a wine tour visits. Before you book a château stay, check its address on Mon Réseau Mobile, the regulator's per-address map for all four operators. Our 4G vs 5G guide explains why 4G is all you need between the vines.

Each of these eight providers went through our paid test, has a live plan table below and enough France reviews to judge. Bordeaux appears in only a few named reports. So we rank on France-wide records, on which French network each provider uses, and on how each behaves in rural areas.

Nobody names Bordeaux, so we rank it on the France record and our own test. There is no app, the eSIM installs from a QR code, and the profile allows one install. A Swiss customer who uses it across France every year found a manual network search often gave a better signal, worth trying at a rural gîte. See the eSIM4Travel review for the full test.

Saily, from the NordVPN company, uses Orange and SFR in France, the two operators with the best rural scores. Our test gave it 8.5, with the highest app score in the group (9/10) and a 10 for support. Installation runs inside the app with no QR code, and the profile reinstalls.

The unlimited plan allows 5 GB a day at full speed and unrestricted hotspot, then slows to 1 Mbps. One Irish customer was surprised by the cap on day two of a two-week holiday. We have only one France report, so the network record is thin. Our Saily review logs the speed results.

Holafly has one of the strongest France records we track, 58 of 62 reports positive, and it runs on Orange only. One American switched from her home carrier's daily roaming fee and had excellent service around France, including a Buddhist monastery outside Bordeaux. Another couple used it through remote France and Spain with first-class support.

Our test scored it 6.2, because speed came in at 4/10 and price at 4/10. The hotspot cap is 1 GB a day and there is a single install. One customer whose phone turned out to be carrier-locked got no refund, so check that first. Our Holafly review goes through the unlimited trade-offs.

Nomad, reported on Orange and Bouygues, has 79 positive France reports out of 98. The south-west report that matters comes from a Mexican traveler in a motorhome. He had excellent signal from the north of France to the Pyrenees, with a TV running off the hotspot. Another customer paid about $16 for a week of unlimited data in a rural part of France with poor Wi-Fi.

The warnings are elsewhere: nothing at all in Burgundy for one user, and only SFR in the Paris suburbs for another. Our test scored Nomad 6.8, with connection speed at 8 and support at 2/10. Prices are fair, about $9 for 5 GB and $14 for 10 GB. Our Nomad review publishes the whole support chat.

The reason it sits low for Bordeaux is the network. Global YO does not name its French partner, and a German reviewer identified it as Free, which has the lowest rural scores of the four. Airalo is the eSIM most travelers have heard of, and in France it has the weakest record we track: 27 of 49 reports positive. It names Orange as its French network, so the towers are not the problem. Summer 2026 reviews describe plans that stopped after crossing into France, and one customer bought two France eSIMs and could connect neither.

Airalo still scored 7.3 in our test, with 9 for purchase and 9 for installation, and a hiker found its regional plan solid in remote alpine areas. Price scored 4/10. The rest is in our Airalo review, next to three Airalo alternatives.

GoMoWorld, Jetpac, Ubigi and Others in Bordeaux

GoMoWorld (8.2) posted a perfect 10 in our speed test on Orange and Free, and one campervan traveler crossed France with digital radio streaming the whole way. Its France record is 12 of 16. Jetpac (6.7) was seen only on Free, the weakest rural network, with 9 of 12 France reports positive. ByteSIM (5.3) uses Orange and Bouygues, sells plans with a French +33 number, and scored 2/10 for support.

Ubigi is the untested provider Bordeaux travelers write about most, and not kindly: pretty poor coverage in Bordeaux for one, nothing at all in Créon for another. It uses SFR, Free and Bouygues but never Orange, which explains the gap. Maya Mobile has 144 of 153 France reports positive but sells only multi-country plans, and Simify kept a Camino walker online for 38 days. Our France comparison tool sets them side by side.

In a rural rental with two phones on one hotspot, that arrives before dinner. A 10 GB fixed plan is usually cheaper for a week. The budget plans are ranked in our cheapest eSIM comparison.

How Much Data a Bordeaux Trip Takes

Bordeaux is light on data in the city and heavier in the countryside. In town you will use tram tickets, maps, a tasting booking and photos, about 0.5 GB a day. Among the vineyards, maps run for hours in the car and hotel Wi-Fi is rarer. Plan on 5 GB for a wine week, 10 GB if you add the Dordogne or video calls.

Reviews show the extremes. A Nomad customer in a rural part of France with poor Wi-Fi paid about $16 for a week of unlimited data and called it good value. A Jetpac user lost 4 GB of a 5 GB pack to phone background services in two days, so switch off automatic updates before you travel.

Download the Bordeaux area and the wine regions in Google Maps before you leave, and keep photo backup on Wi-Fi only. Our data-saving tips have more, the travel data calculator turns your habits into a number, and our 5 GB and 10 GB guides show what each amount buys.

Day Trips From Bordeaux: Saint-Émilion, Arcachon, the Dordogne and Spain

Saint-Émilion is 35 minutes by train, and its stone village and underground church are full of signal shadows, so download the map and your tasting times first. Créon and the Entre-deux-Mers villages are where a Ubigi customer had no working connection, so a plan with Orange is the safer choice. Arcachon and the Dune du Pilat are busy in summer and well covered, with a clear line to the towers from the dune itself.

The Dordogne is a two-hour drive into river valleys and limestone villages, the sort of terrain where the regulator says all operators lose signal. Downloaded maps are a must for Sarlat and the caves. Biarritz and the Basque coast are two hours by train and still in France, while San Sebastián across the border is Spain. Pair France and Spain in our multi-country search.

Buying a SIM in Bordeaux vs Installing an eSIM at Home

Bordeaux-Mérignac has no operator shop in arrivals. In the city, Orange, SFR, Bouygues and Free all have stores on or near Rue Sainte-Catherine. Staff will register your passport on the spot, as French law requires. A prepaid SIM also gives you a +33 number, which some château tasting rooms still want for a booking.

Online prices beat any counter. Orange Travel sells a data-only Europe plan at about $6 for 1 GB or $23 for 10 GB over 14 days. SFR La Carte starts at €4.99 for 40 GB with unlimited calls. For a data-only week, a travel eSIM at $9 to $14 for 10 GB wins and is already installed when the TGV pulls into Saint-Jean. The trade-offs are in our eSIM vs SIM comparison.

Free eSIM Data for a Bordeaux Weekend

A city weekend of maps and messages may not need a paid plan. GigSky, our Bordeaux pick, gives new users a free 100 MB France trial with no card and up to 500 MB on its Europe trial. Some Visa cards unlock up to 5 GB free, and many GigSky reviewers in France were using that perk.

Roamless gives first-time buyers 500 MB at no charge and lists all four French networks, including Orange for the vineyards. One customer used its pay-as-you-go credit in remote areas of France with a good signal everywhere. No-cost options are gathered in our free eSIM guide.

What Travelers Told Us About eSIMs in Bordeaux and the South-West

Bordeaux produces few eSIM reviews compared with Paris, and the ones we have are short and blunt. Read them as confirmations and warnings rather than a ranking.

GigSky gave a French traveler a great data plan for a Bordeaux trip, with no problems connecting or using it. Holafly delivered excellent service around France for an American couple, including a Buddhist monastery outside Bordeaux, and worked through remote France and Spain for an Australian couple. Ubigi drew two failures: pretty poor coverage in Bordeaux, and no working connection in Créon.

Across the wider south-west, a Nomad motorhome traveler had excellent signal from the north of France to the Pyrenees and could hotspot a TV. A Simify walker on the Camino had continuous connectivity for 38 days, while another Simify report from the south-west is negative. A different Ubigi customer toured the south-west and said everything worked smoothly, yet one in rural France, on what her phone showed as Orange, got nothing.

The country-wide working-versus-failing count is in the recommendation matrix near the top. Our eSIM customer support test records how each provider handled faults we caused on purpose.

Setting Up Your eSIM Before Bordeaux and the Vineyards

Install at home on Wi-Fi, days before departure. None of these providers starts the clock until you connect in France. It is far easier to fix a problem from your sofa than from a vineyard with one bar of signal.

      1. Check the phone. You need eSIM hardware and an unlocked handset. A locked phone is the most common cause of failure, and one Holafly customer only found out after paying. Our list of phones with eSIM settles it in ten seconds.
      2. Test for free first. GigSky's 100 MB trial installs like any other eSIM and costs nothing. If it works at home, your phone and your settings are right.
      3. Install the real plan on Wi-Fi. Our iPhone and Samsung guides walk through every menu of the QR scan. Received a text code instead? Our tool will make a QR code from it.
      4. On arrival: turn the eSIM line on, enable Data Roaming, make it the mobile data line and switch off data on your home SIM. Holafly, eSIM4Travel, Global YO and Yesim allow one install only, so never delete the profile.
      5. Out in the vineyards: if data stops, select the network by hand, Orange F first, and drop 5G to 4G. The other common faults are in our eSIM troubleshooting guide.

Mérignac airport has free Wi-Fi, and tram A into the center has signal the whole way. Saint-Jean station also has free Wi-Fi if the eSIM has not connected by the time the TGV stops. The two-hour ride from Paris crosses open farmland with short dropouts in cuttings, so do not judge the eSIM until you are in the station. Picking up a rental car for the Médoc? Bordeaux eSIM Questions Answered

      Frequently Asked Questions

Will my eSIM work in the vineyards around Bordeaux?
It depends on the network behind the plan. The regulator's 2025 test measured rural perfect-quality calls at 83% for Orange, 79% for SFR, 77% for Bouygues and 76% for Free. The villages between the châteaux are as rural as France gets. Reviews match: GigSky and Holafly, both on Orange, worked in and around Bordeaux, while Ubigi, which never uses Orange, failed a customer in Créon. Pick a plan with Orange and download the map of your wine route before you leave the city.
Does the eSIM work on the TGV from Paris to Bordeaux?
For most of the two hours, yes, with short gaps in cuttings and tunnels. The regulator found Orange held 74% of two-minute calls aboard high-speed trains, Free 61%, Bouygues 58% and SFR 56%, so a plan with Orange has the edge. The line runs through open country and phones reconnect quickly after each gap. Download anything you need before boarding, and wait until Saint-Jean station before you decide whether the eSIM is working.
How much data do I need for a week in Bordeaux and the wine country?
About 5 GB for a week that mixes city days with vineyard days: maps for hours in the car, tasting bookings, a translation app, messaging and photos. Add the Dordogne, video calls or a rural rental with weak Wi-Fi and 10 GB is safer. A Nomad customer in rural France paid about $16 for a week of unlimited data. Switch off automatic app updates, since one traveler lost 4 GB of a 5 GB pack to background services. For a precise figure, use (Travel Data Calculator).
Can I use my Bordeaux eSIM for a day trip to San Sebastián or Bilbao?
Not on a France-only plan. Spain is in the EU, but a travel eSIM only covers the countries it lists, and a France plan stops at Hendaye. Buy a Europe plan, or open our France comparison at (eSIM Comparison) and choose a two-country option. A GigSky customer drove across Spain and southern France with WhatsApp working the whole way, and a Simify walker on the Camino stayed connected for 38 days. Biarritz and the French Basque coast stay covered by your France plan.
Why did Ubigi fail travelers in Bordeaux and Créon?
Ubigi uses SFR, Free and Bouygues in France but not Orange, which has the best rural scores by a clear margin. In the center of Bordeaux that should not matter, and one Ubigi customer still called coverage pretty poor, while another toured the south-west without complaint. In Créon, a wine village east of the city, the only strong signal may be Orange, and a plan that cannot use it shows nothing. The same thing happened to a Ubigi customer in rural France whose phone displayed Orange but could not connect.
Is there anything to know about the 2G switch-off in the south-west?
Only that it does not affect a travel eSIM. Orange began switching off its 2G network in France in March 2026, starting with Bayonne, Anglet and Biarritz, and the other operators follow in late 2026. Every phone that can hold an eSIM is a 4G or 5G phone, so you will never touch 2G. The freed spectrum goes to 4G and 5G, which is good news for rural Nouvelle-Aquitaine. If you bring an old backup phone for calls, check it is at least 4G.

Our Verdict on the Best eSIM for Bordeaux

Bordeaux is a wine-country trip in disguise, so the best eSIM for Bordeaux is one that uses Orange. GigSky is our pick: a clean Bordeaux report, 9/10 for support, a free trial to test your phone, and slower speeds as the trade-off. eSIM4Travel is the faster paid alternative that won our overall test.

For unlimited data, Holafly reached a monastery outside Bordeaux and has a 94% France record. Skip plans without Orange for the vineyards, download your wine-route maps, and compare live prices in our France eSIM comparison tool.

      Why can you trust Vefru?

Founders František and Jan experienced problems with mobile data every time they traveled outside the EU. As technology enthusiasts, the idea of traveling abroad without a data connection or risking truly insane roaming fees was unacceptable to them. Regardless of how adventurous the story of walking across Toronto on a winter night without an online map might be, it's not something they would want to repeat.

After the emergence of eSIM and later eSIM travel data package providers, they learned a lot about the technology and industry and decided to share their findings and the comparison tool they created for themselves with others. It now contains more than 20,000 updated eSIM mobile data packages from the most popular providers for more than 170 countries around the world.

Every time you read a guide on Vefru, it is created in the same way the author would research the topic themselves. From contacting locals about the best network operators, to recommending the most advantageous plans for what you really need, to technical guides on how to create a QR code for eSIM or how to troubleshoot eSIM issues. Most articles are created based on topics that the authors themselves have dealt with and for which they found the best solutions.
