Best eSIM for Lyon (2026): Tested Providers, Networks and Prices

František Macháček
Best eSIM in French Cities

Key Takeaways

Key Takeaways

For Lyon we recommend Nomad, the provider with the best reports from the mountains and border crossings a Lyon trip actually involves. Only two reviews name Lyon, so we ranked on what travelers reported on the TGV, in the Alps and across the Swiss border.

  • 79 of 98 France reviews say it worked. One driver had 4G through the mountains east of Lyon.
  • Orange plus Bouygues on one plan, and 665 Mbps on Orange in an independent Lille test.
  • Drawback: 6.8 in our test, with support at 2/10, so plan on fixing problems yourself.
  • For the lowest price, eSIM4Travel won our test at 8.8 on Orange, the network that holds a TGV signal best. For a Geneva day trip, Saily sells Europe plans that include Switzerland and gives you a second French network.

Why Lyon Is a Train-and-Border Test for Your eSIM

Lyon is the hub of eastern France. Paris is two hours by TGV, Geneva under two, the Alps an hour east. Most visitors ride the Rhônexpress tram from Saint-Exupéry into Part-Dieu in half an hour.

Two things catch travelers out. The Renaissance traboules of Vieux Lyon have stone walls thick enough to swallow a signal. And Switzerland sits outside the EU, so a France-only eSIM dies at the Geneva line.

Vefru buys every eSIM with its own money and tests checkout, installation, speed and support. For Lyon we read every report naming the city, the Rhône-Alpes, Geneva crossings or the French Alps. Named Lyon reports are rare, so France-wide records carry the weight. Our France eSIM comparison holds today's prices.

How well each provider's eSIM works in France

The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in France. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

Which eSIM Providers Are Cheapest in France?

Providers sell different amounts of data at different prices, so price per GB is the fairest way to compare them. Each bar below shows a provider's median price per GB for its France plans with 1 to 10 GB of data and 6 to 14 days of validity, which covers most one- and two-week trips. The shorter the bar, the less you pay for each GB. A France plan costs the same wherever you use it in the country, so these prices apply to Lyon too.

    Generated 05.10.2026 14:33

A low price per GB isn't the whole story. Compare it with how often each provider worked for travelers in France in the chart above, and check the speed caps and plan sizes in the provider sections below before you buy.

Lyon eSIM Plans at a Glance

A France plan bought for Lyon also covers Annecy, Chamonix and the Beaujolais villages. It stops at the Swiss border, 150 km away and one day trip closer than you think. Geneva needs a Europe plan that lists Switzerland by name.

Networks in Lyon: TGV Lines, Alpine Valleys and Old Stone

Four operators own the French networks: Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile. For Lyon the most useful figure from the regulator's 2025 campaign is about trains. Aboard the TGV, Orange held 74% of two-minute calls, Free 61%, Bouygues 58% and SFR 56%.

In dense centers like the Presqu'île, ARCEP found Orange and Bouygues roughly tied. Orange led rural upload speed at 14 Mbit/s against 8 for Free. Independent testing in early 2026 clocked Orange at 665 Mbps on a Nomad eSIM. Our guide to eSIMs with more than one network shows how to move between operators.

The two Lyon reports point in opposite directions. A Ubigi customer had a great connection once he had selected both of the network profiles his airport setup created. A Maya Mobile user had extremely slow internet or no signal in the middle of Lyon and Dijon.

Which network you get depends on the brand. Holafly and Airalo name Orange, and eSIM4Travel and GigSky are reported on it. Saily adds SFR, Nomad and Yesim add Bouygues, GoMoWorld adds Free, Ubigi has no Orange and Jetpac appears only on Free. East of Lyon the choice matters more, because ARCEP flags Alpine valleys as a place where every network drops.

Before you book a flat in Vieux Lyon or a chalet above Annecy, check the address on the regulator's Mon Réseau Mobile map. It models outdoor coverage, so a Renaissance courtyard can still be a dead zone. Our 4G vs 5G guide explains why 4G handles almost every travel task.

Each of these eight providers passed our paid test, has a live plan table below and enough France reviews to judge. Lyon appears by name in only two reviews. The ranking below rests on France-wide records, the network each provider uses and what travelers reported on trains and in the Alps.

Saily scored 8.5, with the best app here (9/10) and a 10 for support. In France it runs on Orange and SFR, so your phone has somewhere to go when a cell at Part-Dieu fills up.

Two details matter in Lyon. The profile reinstalls, useful if a phone vanishes on the metro. And Saily sells Europe plans that include Switzerland, so a Geneva day survives. Unlimited gives 5 GB a day with no hotspot cap. We have one France report, so the record is thin. Our Saily review publishes the speed runs.

Nomad has 79 positive France reports out of 98 and runs on Orange and Bouygues. Its reviews read well for the mountains east of Lyon: 4G through mountain drives and flawless data in remote Interlaken. One motorhome hotspot held from northern France to the Pyrenees.

The warnings are real. One traveler had no coverage in Burgundy, just north of Lyon, despite checking the map. Nomad took 6.8 in our test, with support at 2/10. Prices are fair at about $14 for 10 GB, and unlimited slows after 2 GB a day. Our Nomad review carries the full transcript.

GoMoWorld, Jetpac, Ubigi and Others in Lyon

GoMoWorld (8.2) won our speed test outright on Orange and Free, with 12 of 16 France reports positive. One British camper drove through France with a TV hotspotted to it, while another saw 5G in France and 3G across the Swiss border. Jetpac (6.7) was seen only on Free and keeps Maps, WhatsApp and Uber alive after your data runs out. ByteSIM (5.3) runs on Orange and Bouygues, with a French +33 number on some plans.

Ubigi has the only named Lyon report among untested brands, and it is positive once a confusing airport setup with two Transatel profiles was solved. Ubigi has no Orange, and one customer lost data crossing into Switzerland. Maya Mobile has 144 of 153 France reports positive, yet its single Lyon review complains of slow or no signal. How Much Data a Lyon Trip Takes

A Lyon city break is light on data: maps between the Presqu'île and Vieux Lyon, the TCL app, a few bookings and messaging, about 0.5 GB a day. So 2 GB covers a weekend and 5 GB a week. Add the mountains and a ski week moves toward 10 GB, with resort apps, weather radar and video calls from a chalet.

Reviews show how fast a plan drains. A Jetpac customer lost 4 GB of a 5 GB pack in two days to iPhone background services. Switch off background app refresh and automatic updates before you land.

Download the Lyon map area and any Alpine valley you plan to drive through before you leave home. Our data-saving tips for vacation cover the rest, and the travel data calculator gives a number for your habits. Our 2 GB and 5 GB guides show what each buys.

Day Trips From Lyon: Geneva, Annecy, Chamonix and Beaujolais

Geneva is under two hours from Part-Dieu and the trap on this list. Switzerland sits outside the EU, and a France-only eSIM stops at the border. A Ubigi customer arrived by train, never connected, and could not reach his rented flat. One Airalo customer found Switzerland missing from her Europe plan. Pair the two countries in our multi-country search and read our Switzerland eSIM guide.

Annecy, Chamonix and Grenoble are in France, so the same plan works, but the valleys are where French networks thin out. ARCEP names the Alps as a drop zone for every operator. A Nomad driver had 4G through the mountains and an Airalo hiker had signal on the Tour du Mont Blanc. A Global YO user never got online there.

Buying a SIM in Lyon vs Installing an eSIM at Home

Saint-Exupéry has no operator boutique, so a local SIM means a shop in town. All four operators sit in the Part-Dieu center and along Rue de la République, and French law requires ID for every SIM. Online, Orange Travel's data-only Europe plans cost about $6 for 1 GB and $23 for 10 GB over 14 days. SFR La Carte is €4.99 for 40 GB.

For a data-only Lyon trip, a travel eSIM at $9 to $14 for 10 GB wins, because it works before the Rhônexpress leaves the airport. A local SIM makes sense for a French number or a month-long stay. One GigSky customer who never got 5G switched to an Orange Travel eSIM and was happy. Our eSIM vs SIM comparison has the trade-offs.

Free eSIM Data for a Lyon Arrival

A short Lyon stop may need only the Rhônexpress timetable, a map to the hotel and a message home. New users get a free 100 MB France trial from GigSky, no card needed, and up to 500 MB on its Europe trial. Certain Visa cards unlock up to 5 GB.

Roamless hands first-time buyers 500 MB free, lists all four French networks and its credits never expire. One customer used it across Germany, Switzerland and France when his home plan failed. Our free eSIM guide collects every no-cost option.

What Travelers Told Us About eSIMs in Lyon and the Alps

Lyon appears in two named reviews in our set. That is thin, so we widened the net to the Alps, Burgundy and the Swiss crossings a Lyon visitor is likely to make.

Ubigi delivered a great Lyon connection for an Australian. Only after a tricky airport setup with two network profiles, and another Ubigi customer lost all data crossing into Switzerland. Maya Mobile left a Swiss visitor with slow or no signal in the middle of Lyon and Dijon, then refunded her.

In the mountains, Nomad collected the friendliest reports: 4G through mountain drives, flawless data in remote Interlaken, and a motorhome hotspot from northern France to the Pyrenees. Its failure was Burgundy. Airalo worked on the Tour du Mont Blanc and on a train to Switzerland, yet left another customer with no service there. Global YO failed a traveler in the French Alps.

The France-wide working-versus-failing counts are in the recommendation matrix near the top. Our eSIM customer support test shows which helpdesks answered when we broke things on purpose.

Setting Up Your eSIM Before You Reach Part-Dieu

Install at home on Wi-Fi, a few days before you travel. Every provider here lets you install today and activate when you land. The Ubigi customer who spent his first hour in Lyon wrestling with network profiles is the reason.

      1. Check the phone. The phone needs eSIM support and no carrier lock. A locked phone is the most common cause of failure; one Nomad customer's wife found out in France. Check yours against our phones with eSIM list.
      2. Install on Wi-Fi at home. Scan the emailed QR code or let the app load the profile, with our iPhone or Samsung guide. A code without a QR can be converted here. Holafly, eSIM4Travel, Global YO and Yesim install once, so never delete the profile.
      3. At Saint-Exupéry or Part-Dieu: switch the eSIM line on, enable Data Roaming, set it as the mobile data line and turn off data on your home SIM.
      4. Still offline? Toggle airplane mode, select the network by hand, and check the APN (Global YO uses globaldata). If two profiles appear, as they did for a Ubigi user, select both. Then read our eSIM troubleshooting guide.

Saint-Exupéry has free Wi-Fi, and the Rhônexpress tram keeps signal for most of its 30-minute run. By TGV, your eSIM has been working since Paris, with a dip in the tunnels before Part-Dieu. Arriving from Geneva is the tricky one: the phone sits on a Swiss network well inside France, so pick Orange F by hand past Bellegarde.

      Lyon eSIM Questions Answered

      Frequently Asked Questions

Will my Lyon eSIM work on a day trip to Geneva?
Only if Switzerland is on the plan by name. It sits outside the EU, and a France-only eSIM stops at a border under two hours from Part-Dieu. A Ubigi customer arrived by train and never got a connection. One Airalo traveler found Switzerland missing from her Europe plan, while another rode Paris to Switzerland with data all the way. Compare France plans at (eSIM Comparison) and read (eSIM Switzerland | Comparison of the Best Data eSIMs) before you book.
Does the eSIM work on the TGV between Paris and Lyon?
Yes, with a difference between networks. In the regulator's 2025 test, Orange held 74% of two-minute calls aboard the TGV, Free 61%, Bouygues 58% and SFR 56%. A plan on Orange gives the best chance of finishing a download between stations. That means Holafly, Airalo, eSIM4Travel and GigSky, or Nomad, Saily and Yesim as one of two networks. Expect short drops in tunnels.
How much data do I need for a weekend in Lyon?
About 2 GB for a two-day city break with maps, the TCL app, bookings and messaging, using hotel Wi-Fi in the evenings. Take 5 GB for a week, or if a day trip means maps running in the car. A ski week in the Alps afterwards pushes toward 10 GB, because of resort apps, weather radar and video calls from a chalet. For your own figure, use (Travel Data Calculator).
Which eSIM works best in the French Alps near Lyon?
The reports point to plans that use Orange. A Nomad driver had 4G through the mountains and an Airalo hiker kept signal on the Tour du Mont Blanc. A Global YO user in the French Alps never got data at all, and Global YO does not say which French network it uses. ARCEP lists Alpine valleys as a drop zone for every operator and ranks Orange first for rural coverage.
Why does my eSIM drop out in Vieux Lyon and the traboules?
Old stone. The Renaissance courtyards and covered passages of Vieux Lyon have walls thick enough to block 4G, and the Fourvière basilica is the same. A French phone drops there too, so this is not a provider fault. Step back into the street or onto the quay and the signal returns. If it does not, toggle airplane mode so the phone hunts for a fresh cell. The other fixes are in (eSIM Not Working? Complete Troubleshooting Guide | Vefru).
Does Lyon have 5G, and will my eSIM use it?
Yes, all four French operators run 5G in Lyon, and Orange won the 5G download speed award in the latest Opensignal report. Whether your eSIM reaches it depends on the provider's roaming deal and on your phone. Travelers report 5G in French cities on Nomad, Simify and GoMoWorld, though a few see 3G in busy areas. For maps, messaging and video calls, 4G is plenty, as (4G vs. 5G: Differences and whether 5G is worth it) explains.

Our Verdict on the Best eSIM for Lyon

Lyon rewards a plan that holds a signal on a train and in a valley. Nomad is our pick on the reports we have: 4G through the mountains, flawless data in Interlaken, Orange plus Bouygues, with weak support as the trade-off. eSIM4Travel is the cheaper alternative on Orange and won our test outright.

For a Geneva day, Saily sells a Europe plan that includes Switzerland. Read the country list before you cross any border, and compare live prices in our France eSIM comparison tool.

      Why can you trust Vefru?

Founders František and Jan experienced problems with mobile data every time they traveled outside the EU. As technology enthusiasts, the idea of traveling abroad without a data connection or risking truly insane roaming fees was unacceptable to them. Regardless of how adventurous the story of walking across Toronto on a winter night without an online map might be, it's not something they would want to repeat.

After the emergence of eSIM and later eSIM travel data package providers, they learned a lot about the technology and industry and decided to share their findings and the comparison tool they created for themselves with others. It now contains more than 20,000 updated eSIM mobile data packages from the most popular providers for more than 170 countries around the world.

Every time you read a guide on Vefru, it is created in the same way the author would research the topic themselves. From contacting locals about the best network operators, to recommending the most advantageous plans for what you really need, to technical guides on how to create a QR code for eSIM or how to troubleshoot eSIM issues. Most articles are created based on topics that the authors themselves have dealt with and for which they found the best solutions.
