Best eSIM for Avignon (2026): Tested Providers for the City and Rural Provence

František Macháček
Best eSIM in French Cities

Key Takeaways

Key Takeaways

For Avignon we recommend GigSky, the only provider with a named Provence report in our set, and a positive one. An Avignon trip is really a Provence trip, and the villages, vineyards and Mont Ventoux are where the network choice matters most.

  • One traveler had data in rural Provence, often over mountain tops, and rated it as good as Airalo or better.
  • 28 of 33 France reports are positive, it runs on Orange, and support scored 9/10 in our test.
  • Drawback: speed scored 6/10, and its free 100 MB trial is a phone test rather than a week's plan.
  • For the lowest price on the same network, eSIM4Travel won our test at 8.8 with 5 of 5 France reports positive. For unlimited data on a road trip, Holafly worked through remote France for one couple, at a higher price.

Avignon: A Walled City, a July Festival and a Lot of Countryside

Avignon is small enough to cross on foot and big enough to host the largest theatre festival in the world. For three weeks each July the walled city fills with hundreds of shows a day. The rest of the year it is the base for Provence. The Pont du Gard, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Luberon villages and Mont Ventoux are all within an hour by car.

That is what makes an Avignon eSIM different from a Paris one. Inside the walls the test is congestion during the festival. Outside, it is rural coverage on roads where the regulator says every operator loses signal at times.

Vefru paid for every eSIM in this guide and tested each from checkout through to a support ticket. For Avignon we read every report naming Provence, the Vaucluse, Mont Ventoux or southern France. No review names Avignon itself, so we lean on those Provence reports and on each provider's France-wide record. Our France eSIM comparison tool lists live prices.

How well each provider's eSIM works in France

The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in France. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

Which eSIM Providers Are Cheapest in France?

Providers sell different amounts of data at different prices, so price per GB is the fairest way to compare them. Each bar below shows a provider's median price per GB for its France plans with 1 to 10 GB of data and 6 to 14 days of validity, which covers most one- and two-week trips. The shorter the bar, the less you pay for each GB. A France plan costs the same wherever you use it in the country, so these prices apply to Avignon too.

    Generated 05.10.2026 14:33

A low price per GB isn't the whole story. Compare it with how often each provider worked for travelers in France in the chart above, and check the speed caps and plan sizes in the provider sections below before you buy.

Avignon eSIM Plans at a Glance

A France plan bought for Avignon covers the whole of Provence, the Rhône valley down to Marseille and the rest of metropolitan France. It also covers a Rhône river cruise from end to end, because Lyon, Avignon and Arles are all in France.

Networks in Avignon and Provence: Where Orange Earns Its Reputation

The French towers belong to four operators: Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile. In rural Provence that choice matters more than in any French city. The regulator's 2025 campaign found perfect-quality calls 83% of the time on Orange, 79% on SFR, 77% on Bouygues and 76% on Free. On rural web browsing, Orange loaded pages within five seconds 79% of the time, SFR 75%, Free 72% and Bouygues 71%.

ARCEP also counts the gaps. Strict white zones with no coverage from any operator hold about 0.18% of the French population, around 100,000 people. Most of them are villages and hills like those around Mont Ventoux. In practice a Luberon village has signal on its square and may lose it on the lane out. Our guide to eSIMs with more than one network shows how to switch operators when one drops.

The Provence reports match the numbers. A GigSky customer had data in rural Provence, often over mountain tops. A Holafly couple crossed remote France and Spain without trouble. A Nomad traveler paid $16 for a week of unlimited data in a rural part of France with poor Wi-Fi. Another Nomad family had good service in small French villages.

The failures are instructive. One Nomad customer got no use at all in southern France after three days in Paris. A Ubigi user in the French countryside, whose phone showed Orange, got nothing, which fits a plan that cannot use Orange at all. Another Ubigi customer had poor connectivity for several days across the south, while a third had a great connection on his first visit. A Maya Mobile couple found reception sporadic.

Which operator your eSIM gets depends on the brand. Holafly uses Orange alone, Airalo names it, and eSIM4Travel and GigSky are reported on it too. Saily adds SFR, Nomad and Yesim add Bouygues, and Ubigi has no Orange. Before booking a mas outside Gordes or a flat in the Sault lavender country, check the address on the regulator's Mon Réseau Mobile map. It models outdoor coverage only. Our 4G vs 5G guide explains why 4G is all you need out here.

Eight eSIM Providers Compared for Avignon

The eight providers below all passed our paid test. Each has a live plan table further down and a France review sample large enough to judge. Avignon appears in no named review, so the ranking rests on Provence and southern France reports, on the France-wide record and on which network each provider uses.

eSIM4Travel won our test at 8.8 out of 10, with a perfect 10 for price and 10 for customer support. It is reported on Orange, the operator that leads every rural measure in the regulator's 2025 campaign. All five France reviewers in our set report that it worked, and one had a connection problem solved with a new eSIM at no charge.

A Swiss customer who has used it across France for two years found that a manual network search often gave better reception. That habit is worth copying on Provence back roads. With no app it runs on any eSIM phone, and the profile can be installed once. Unlimited gives 3 GB a day, then slows to 1 Mbps. Test screenshots are in our eSIM4Travel review.

    Saily eSIM in our hands

Saily testing outdoor Saily testing speed 1 Saily testing speed 2 Saily testing support

Saily uses two French networks, Orange and SFR. During the July festival, when the walled city holds several times its normal population, a second network is a real escape route from a full cell. Our test scored Saily 8.5 with the best app of the eight (9/10) and a 10 for support.

Installation runs inside the app, one customer liked that the plan activated itself on arrival, and the profile can be reinstalled. Unlimited gives 5 GB a day at full speed and unrestricted hotspot use before slowing to 1 Mbps, a cap an Irish customer hit on day two. We have a single France report, so its record here is thin. Speed tests are in our Saily review.

Of 62 France reports for Holafly, 58 are positive, and Orange is its only French network. The most relevant review for Avignon comes from an Australian couple who used it through remote France and Spain, calling the pricing good and the support first class. A Canadian was never let down from Paris to Marseille and Cassis.

The trade-offs do not change from one French city to the next. It scored 6.2 in our test, with speed and price both at 4/10, hotspot capped at 1 GB a day and one install per profile. One British traveler failed to connect most of the time across Spain, southern France and Italy. For a family driving between Luberon villages, it is still the simplest choice. Our Holafly review covers whether unlimited is worth it.

Nomad testing preview Nomad testing speed 1 Nomad testing speed 2 Nomad testing support

Nomad's France record stands at 79 of 98, and it is reported on Orange and Bouygues. Its rural reviews are encouraging. One family had great service in small French villages, and a traveler in a rural corner paid $16 for a week of unlimited data. A motorhome driver kept a TV running off the hotspot from the north down to the Pyrenees.

The warnings matter in Provence. One customer got no use at all in southern France. Another found the connection missing often in rural France, Spain and Portugal, and a third had nothing in Burgundy despite a green map. Our test scored Nomad 6.8 with support at 2/10, so plan on fixing things yourself. Pricing is reasonable at roughly $14 for 10 GB. See the transcript in our Nomad review.

GigSky has the one review in our set that names Provence, and it is positive. Airalo eSIM in our hands

Airalo testing outdoor Airalo testing speed 1 Airalo testing speed 2 Airalo testing support

Airalo posts the weakest France record we track, 27 of 49, and names Orange as its French network, so the towers are not the issue. The positive rural report is a hiker who found the regional plan solid in remote alpine valleys on the Tour du Mont Blanc. The negatives from summer 2026 describe plans that stopped mid-trip and full 5G bars with nothing loading.

Our own score for Airalo is 7.3, a 9 for purchase and installation against a 4 for price. It does sell a France plan with 50 GB for a month, one of the larger fixed plans if you plan to work from a Provence rental. See our Airalo review, or jump to three Airalo alternatives.

GoMoWorld, Jetpac, Ubigi and Others in Provence

GoMoWorld (8.2) earned a perfect 10 in our speed test and uses Orange and Free. A British camper drove across France with a TV hotspotted to it and never lost the stream. Jetpac (6.7) was seen only on Free, the operator with the weakest rural scores, though it does keep Maps, WhatsApp and Uber working after your data runs out. ByteSIM (5.3) sits on Orange and Bouygues, and a remote worker rated its unrestricted 5G hotspot highly.

Among untested providers, Ubigi, which never uses Orange, has 44 of 63 France reports positive. The countryside is its weak spot: one rural customer whose phone showed Orange got nothing, and another had poor connectivity across the south for days. Maya Mobile has 144 of 153 France reports positive yet was sporadic for a couple in the south. Roamless lists all four French networks and had good signal in remote parts of France for one customer. Holafly allows 1 GB of hotspot data a day. For a Provence week where the phone is mostly a map, a fixed 5 GB or 10 GB plan is cheaper and never throttles. See our cheapest eSIM comparison for the budget options.

How Much Data an Avignon Trip Takes

Inside Avignon, data use is light: the festival app, maps between the Palais des Papes and Les Halles, a few bookings and messaging. A car moves the figure. Maps running for hours between Gordes, Roussillon and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, plus photos and a translation app, comes to about 0.7 GB a day. Plan on 5 GB for a week with Wi-Fi at the rental, 10 GB if the mas has none.

Two habits keep a plan alive out here. Download the whole Vaucluse map area before you leave Avignon, because a lane below Mont Ventoux is exactly where the map stops loading. And switch off background app refresh, updates and cloud photo backup on mobile data. A Jetpac customer lost 4 GB of a 5 GB pack in two days to phone background services.

Our data-saving tips for vacation cover the rest of the tricks. For a number matched to your own habits use the travel data calculator, and read what 5 GB and 10 GB get you in practice.

Day Trips From Avignon: Pont du Gard, the Luberon, Mont Ventoux and the Rhône

Everything on the classic Avignon list is in France, so one plan covers it all. The Pont du Gard and Nîmes are 30 to 45 minutes west and well covered, with a signal shadow at the bottom of the gorge. Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the Luberon villages sit on hills, with a good signal on the square and gaps on the lanes between them. Pick a plan that uses Orange. A GigSky customer had data over Provence mountain tops on exactly this kind of drive.

Mont Ventoux is the exception. The road to the summit climbs through forest and bare limestone where every operator thins out, so download the route and agree a meeting point before you start. A Rhône river cruise stays in France from Lyon to Arles. So a France plan works at every stop; the ship's Wi-Fi is the weak link, not the towers. Marseille and Cassis are an hour south, where a Holafly customer and a Nomad driver both had good coverage.

Buying a SIM in Avignon vs Installing an eSIM at Home

Avignon has no airport of its own, so there is no arrival counter; most visitors come by TGV or from Marseille airport an hour south. Inside the walls, the operators' shops sit along Rue de la République, and French law requires your passport for every SIM. Orange Travel prices data-only Europe plans at about $6 for 1 GB and $23 for 10 GB valid 14 days. SFR La Carte runs from €4.99 for 40 GB.

For a Provence week, a travel eSIM at $9 to $14 for 10 GB wins. It is already working when the TGV pulls in, and the village shop is never open when you need it. A local SIM makes sense for a month-long rental or if you need a +33 number for a gîte owner. Two travelers in our set who were unhappy with their eSIM switched to Orange plans locally and were satisfied. For all the trade-offs, read our eSIM vs SIM comparison.

Free eSIM Data for an Avignon Arrival

A first afternoon may need only the shuttle-train time from Avignon TGV, a map to the hotel and a message home. A free 100 MB France trial with no card, plus up to 500 MB on a Europe trial, comes from GigSky, our Avignon pick. Some Visa cards unlock up to 5 GB free.

Roamless hands first-time buyers 500 MB free and lists all four French networks; one customer had good signal in remote parts of France on its pay-as-you-go plan. Our free eSIM guide has every no-cost option.

What Provence Travelers Told Us About Their eSIMs

No review in our set names Avignon, so we gathered every report from rural Provence, the Vaucluse and southern France more widely. It is a small sample of people who had a very good or a very bad week.

GigSky delivered data in rural Provence, often over mountain tops, with speeds a little slow at times. The same traveler rated it as good as Airalo or better. Holafly worked through remote France and Spain for an Australian couple and from Paris to Marseille and Cassis for a Canadian. Then failed most of the time for a British traveler across Spain, southern France and Italy.

Nomad gave one traveler a week of unlimited data in rural France for $16 and a family good service in small villages. Another driver had 5G almost all the time around Marseille. It also left one customer with no use in southern France. Ubigi split the south, great for one visitor and poor for several days for another, and a rural customer whose phone showed Orange got nothing. Roamless had good signal in remote parts of France for a month-long traveler.

Setting Up Your eSIM Before the Train Reaches Avignon TGV

Do the installation on home Wi-Fi a few days before departure. The plans here activate on first connection in France. So an early install is free, and support is easier to reach from your kitchen than from a village with one bar of signal.

      1. Check the phone. You need an eSIM-capable phone that is not locked to a carrier. A locked phone is the usual cause of failure, and one Holafly buyer discovered his after paying. Our eSIM phone list has every make and model.
      2. Install on Wi-Fi. Scan the QR code, or install from the app, using our iPhone and Samsung guides. A bare activation code can be converted here.
      3. Do not delete the profile. A Holafly, eSIM4Travel, Global YO or Yesim profile is a one-shot install. Saily, Nomad, GigSky, Roamless and Ubigi profiles can be loaded again.
      4. On arrival in France: turn the eSIM line on, enable Data Roaming for that line, choose it for mobile data and disable data on the home SIM. No connection after a few minutes? Toggle airplane mode, then select Orange F manually.
      5. Before you leave Avignon by car: download the Vaucluse map area and your rental's address. On a Provence lane a manual network search often finds a signal the phone missed, as one eSIM4Travel customer found. The remaining fixes are in our troubleshooting guide.

The TGV station sits outside the walls. The shuttle train to Avignon Centre takes five minutes, by which time your eSIM has been working since Paris or Lyon. If you fly into Marseille, the terminal has free Wi-Fi for a support chat and the train to Avignon takes about an hour. During the July festival the walled city is packed. So if pages crawl near the Place de l'Horloge, drop the phone to 4G or switch networks by hand before you blame the plan.

      Avignon eSIM Questions Answered

      Frequently Asked Questions

Will my eSIM work in the Luberon villages and the Provence countryside?
Mostly yes, with gaps on the lanes between villages. Every French operator thins out in the hills, and the regulator ranks Orange first for rural France on calls, web browsing and upload speed. That favours Holafly, Airalo, eSIM4Travel and GigSky, or Nomad, Saily and Yesim as one of two networks. A GigSky customer had data in rural Provence over mountain tops. A Nomad family had good service in small villages, and a Ubigi customer in the countryside got nothing. Download the Vaucluse map before you drive out.
Does the eSIM work during the Festival d'Avignon in July?
It connects, but speed can drop. The festival multiplies the population inside the walls, and when a cell near the Place de l'Horloge is full the operator serves its own customers before roaming ones. A plan with two networks lets you switch by hand, and dropping the phone from 5G to 4G often helps. Download the festival programme and your tickets on Wi-Fi in the morning, and upload photos at night. The menus for switching operators are in (eSIM with multiple network carriers: Why it’s an advantage and how to switch between operators).
How much data do I need for a week in Provence?
About 5 GB for a week based in Avignon with a car, maps running between villages, photos, bookings and messaging, with Wi-Fi at the rental in the evenings. Take 10 GB if the mas has no Wi-Fi or you make video calls home. Go unlimited only if you will stream every night, and check the daily cap, which ranges from 1 GB at Global YO to 5 GB at Saily. One Nomad customer in rural France paid $16 for a week of unlimited data. For your own number, use (Travel Data Calculator).
Will my eSIM work on a Rhône river cruise that stops in Avignon?
Yes, and this is the good news for cruise passengers. A Rhône cruise stays in France from Lyon down to Avignon and Arles. So a France plan works at every port and on the river, which runs past towns the whole way. The weak link is the ship's Wi-Fi, not the towers. Buy the smallest plan that covers your excursion days and use the eSIM in port. A Nomad driver had excellent data along the same north-to-south corridor.
Does the eSIM work at the Pont du Gard and on Mont Ventoux?
At the Pont du Gard, yes, with a signal shadow at the bottom of the gorge and full coverage at the visitor center. Mont Ventoux is the hardest spot in this guide: the road to the summit climbs through forest and bare limestone where every operator thins out. The regulator's strict no-coverage zones cluster in hills like these. Download the route and agree a meeting point before you start, keep the phone on 4G, and prefer a plan on Orange.
Can I buy a SIM card in Avignon if my eSIM fails?
Yes, inside the walls. Avignon has no airport counter, but Orange, SFR, Bouygues and Free have shops along Rue de la République. Bring your passport, because French law requires ID for every SIM sold. Orange Travel packs start at about $6 for 1 GB and SFR La Carte at €4.99 for 40 GB with calls, with registration inside about 15 days. Two travelers in our set switched to Orange after an eSIM let them down. Before you buy, try the fixes in (eSIM Not Working? Complete Troubleshooting Guide | Vefru).

Our Verdict on the Best eSIM for Avignon

Avignon is a countryside trip with a city attached, so the best eSIM for Avignon is one that uses Orange. GigSky is our pick on the evidence: the one named Provence report, data over mountain tops, 9/10 for support, with a 6/10 speed score as the trade-off. eSIM4Travel is the cheaper alternative that won our overall test, and Holafly the unlimited option for a family road trip.

Whatever you choose, download the Vaucluse map before you leave the walls and treat Mont Ventoux as offline. Drop the phone to 4G when the festival crowds slow everything down. Every plan's live price is in our France eSIM comparison tool.

      Why can you trust Vefru?

Founders František and Jan experienced problems with mobile data every time they traveled outside the EU. As technology enthusiasts, the idea of traveling abroad without a data connection or risking truly insane roaming fees was unacceptable to them. Regardless of how adventurous the story of walking across Toronto on a winter night without an online map might be, it's not something they would want to repeat.

After the emergence of eSIM and later eSIM travel data package providers, they learned a lot about the technology and industry and decided to share their findings and the comparison tool they created for themselves with others. It now contains more than 20,000 updated eSIM mobile data packages from the most popular providers for more than 170 countries around the world.

Every time you read a guide on Vefru, it is created in the same way the author would research the topic themselves. From contacting locals about the best network operators, to recommending the most advantageous plans for what you really need, to technical guides on how to create a QR code for eSIM or how to troubleshoot eSIM issues. Most articles are created based on topics that the authors themselves have dealt with and for which they found the best solutions.
