Key takeaways
Across 345 traveler reports from Switzerland and our tests, the best option for most trips is Maya Mobile: it worked well for 84 of 89 travelers, Alps included, and its unlimited plan costs less than any other 30-day unlimited plan we compared. Holafly had the best record, 52 of 53, and names all three Swiss networks, but its speed was capped from the start in our test. Ubigi (47 of 54) suits fixed-data buyers who will not need the help desk. Nomad (32 of 42) was strongest around Interlaken; its misses were activation problems. eSIM4Travel is the cheapest here and worked well for 6 of 6, but has no app.

The best eSIM for Switzerland is not the one that worked in the rest of Europe. Switzerland sits outside the EU roaming zone, so the Europe plan that carried you through France can stop at the border, and the reviews we read for this guide are full of travelers who found that out in Geneva or Zurich. The country has also switched off its fallback networks faster than almost anywhere: 2G went between 2019 and 2023, Sunrise shut 3G in mid-2025, Swisscom at the end of 2025, and Salt is expected to follow by the end of 2026 [1]. Coverage is 4G or 5G or nothing, which makes the network behind each eSIM matter more than usual.
Terrain matters too. According to the federal government, Switzerland has 48 peaks above 4,000 m and Europe's highest railway station at Jungfraujoch, so much of a typical trip happens well above the valleys where cell sites stand. The near-100% coverage figures published by the regulator are population based, modelled on a 100 m grid from data the operators supply voluntarily; they describe where people live, not a hiking trail or a pass road [1] [2].
Two more facts matter for the choice. Nearly every travel eSIM sold for Switzerland rides Sunrise or Salt, while independent testing rates Swisscom strongest in small towns, on rail and in rural 5G; only Holafly names Swisscom on its Switzerland page [6]. And buying a local SIM is slower than elsewhere: Sunrise requires an ID upload with a video selfie [4], and Swisscom's own eSIM activation can ask for a Swiss phone number for two-factor login [3]. This guide ranks 14 providers on 345 traveler reports, our hands-on tests and price position, with picks for Zurich, Geneva, Interlaken and the Alps.

How well each provider's eSIM works in Switzerland
The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in Switzerland. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

How we got these numbers: we read 345 public customer reviews that mention Switzerland or a place in it, published between March 2024 and August 2026, and counted a report as "worked" when the reviewer said the eSIM connected, even with small hiccups. We treat 20 or more reports as strong evidence, 3 to 19 as limited, and fewer than 3 as too few to judge. A count like 84 of 89 means the eSIM worked well for 84 of the 89 travelers who reported from here; each provider section says what went wrong for the rest. The Vefru test score is a separate number: our own hands-on test of the provider, run outside Switzerland, so it says how the provider behaves, not how the network performs here. Local operator prices in the text were checked on 30 August 2026; provider ratings, the plan tables and the price-per-GB chart are live and update on their own.

We chose the Best group on the traveler-report record first, price position second and our hands-on tests third: Airalo has the fifth-largest report count but worked for fewer than half of its travelers, so it sits in the Other group, while eSIM4Travel joins the Best group on a clean record and the lowest price in Switzerland. Maya Mobile is the overall pick ahead of Holafly because its record is within a few points of Holafly's on a bigger sample, and our test found no speed cap.

Maya Mobile eSIM in our hands
Based on the reports and our tests, Maya Mobile is the best option for most trips to Switzerland: it combines a strong record in the mountains with the cheapest unlimited plan over a week or more. It worked well for 84 of 89 travelers who reported from Switzerland (94%), strong evidence. The successes read alike: data on ski tours, "on top of the alps", on a 14-day stay, while driving between Italy, Switzerland and France, and on multi-country trips through Germany and Austria where the eSIM switched networks on its own. One traveler wrote on 3 Sep 2025: "For being mostly in the mountains, in Switzerland, having signal to use data, and at great speeds, was perfect for us."
The five misses were mostly setup and reconnection, not dead zones. One traveler in December 2024 never got online because, as he later found, his primary SIM was still set as the data line; another in October 2025 had data but no internet; one worked on day one of a 10-day drive and would not reconnect on day eight; a Samsung Flip 6 owner lost the connection every time he crossed between Italy and Switzerland and needed a Wi-Fi spot and email support to get back on. Two reviewers from 2024 called the speed and coverage poor. The softer complaints are worth knowing too: spotty signal while hiking (one reviewer wrote his eSIM did not connect to Swisscom), weaker coverage on the edges of cities, and Swiss websites that refused a foreign IP address. Several of these travelers got a refund or a fix from the help desk within minutes, which is also why some kept their five-star rating.
Maya sells one thing: a global unlimited plan for 3, 7, 14 or 30 days, in 165+ countries, with a cruise variant. There is no Swiss plan and nothing under 3 days, so it makes little sense for a day trip from Germany. Full speed runs to 5 GB a day, then the plan terms slow it, with a daily reset; in our test that was the fairest unlimited rule of the 14 providers, and 5G came on at once after we set the APN to "globaldata" and turned roaming on. Hotspot is included, data only, and the QR code arrives by email within seconds, so install at home. The drawbacks: the help desk runs through a WhatsApp bot and a form before a person answers, auto top-up is pushed at checkout, and Maya does not name its Swiss network on its page, so we could not confirm which one it uses. On price it cannot be placed on our fixed-data index, but its 30-day plan is cheaper than every other provider's typical 30-day unlimited plan. Our Maya Mobile review has the test details. Holafly is an Irish eSIM provider built around unlimited data, with trip eSIMs for 200+ destinations. Travelers report it working more often than any other provider we track. Its weak points are speed and price: our test ran at about 30 Mbps on 5G, and its unlimited plans cost more than most.

Holafly eSIM in our hands
Holafly is the safest choice for the Alps and the scenic trains, with one known cost: in our test its speed was capped from the first megabyte, before any data was used. That is enough for maps, messaging, browsing and streaming, and slow for large downloads, uploads, cloud backups and laptop work; the hotspot is also limited to 1 GB a day and there are no top-ups. It worked well for 52 of 53 travelers who reported from Switzerland (98%), the best record of the 14, and the successes describe exactly the places other providers miss: the Bernina Express, the Glacier Express and the GoldenPass Line, villages, "rural areas and mountain regions", a month in the mountains, and road trips across seven countries. A traveler wrote on 19 Aug 2026: "Used it throughout Switzerland, no signal drops, even in rural areas and mountain regions."
The one miss was a solo traveler in June 2026 who had no data in Egypt, Germany or Switzerland on three Holafly eSIMs. The caveats sit inside the positive reviews: "awful" and slow connection around Zurich (May 2026), speeds "more like 3G" in the Neuchâtel region, a patchy stretch in Switzerland on a three-week tour, instability in crowded areas, and a 20-minute drop to 4G in the mountains. One reviewer who bought the eSIM to work from a laptop called the unlimited label misleading once he hit the 1 GB-a-day hotspot limit; another was charged twice and spent days in scripted support loops before a refund. Holafly's own page states the hotspot cap at 1 GB a day, pooled over the plan, and says the operator's fair-use rule may slow the connection for no more than one day, without a GB figure [6].
What sets Holafly apart in Switzerland is its network list: its page names Salt, Sunrise and Swisscom, the only provider we verified naming all three, and the only one naming Swisscom at all [6]. The plans are simple: unlimited data only, for 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 or 30 days, installed with one tap in the app and no QR code. An installed eSIM cannot be moved to another phone, unused eSIMs can be refunded within six months, and the "Always On" extra gives a small data allowance each month after the plan ends [6]. It suits travelers who want to forget about data and will not tether a laptop. The price position is the main drawback after the cap: Holafly is among the most expensive unlimited offers in our comparison. Our Holafly review shows the speed test. Plans at Holafly.

Ubigi is the travel eSIM brand of Paris operator Transatel, with one reusable eSIM for 200+ destinations. Data was fast in our test, and its 3 GB, 10 GB and 30-day unlimited plans are cheap. Its weak point is support: a chatbot that ends in an email ticket, with no live agent.

Ubigi eSIM in our hands
Ubigi is the pick for travelers who want a fixed-data plan or a cheaper 30-day unlimited plan and can set up an eSIM without help. It worked well for 47 of 54 travelers who reported from Switzerland (87%), strong evidence, and the successes cover the whole country: Zurich and Lucerne, Basel, Geneva ("excellent signal everywhere around Geneva"), the Valais mountains, Jungfraujoch, and trips that crossed into France, Italy, Germany and Austria with the network switching on its own after a few minutes. A reviewer wrote on 1 May 2026: "Good data connection even in the mountains of the Valais."
The seven misses were mostly activation, and the help desk did not rescue them. Three travelers never got the eSIM to connect: one arriving by train from France, one who could not find the eSIM in his iPhone settings after paying, one whose email to support went unanswered until he bought from another app. One activation failed on a Fairphone because the APN did not set itself, and a reviewer in Croatia was refused a refund for a plan that showed zero data used. Two more travelers described spotty, slow coverage, one of them around Bern and Basel with frequent drops even in the cities. Signal was weak in the Rhine valley between Mäder and St. Gallen on the Austrian border, where the phone kept switching between networks, and it dropped near Bachalpsee above Grindelwald. One plan started by itself when its owner drove through Switzerland eight weeks after buying it.
Ubigi's page names Salt and Sunrise and is the only one that publishes a full fair-use rule for unlimited data: 60 GB at full speed, then a slow trickle [7]. The Switzerland plans come in 3, 10, 25 and 50 GB and unlimited for 7, 15 or 30 days, plus Europe and World plans; the plan starts on the first connection in Switzerland, tethering is allowed on every plan, and an unused plan expires six months after purchase [7]. Two things set it apart in our test: you can pick a local IP address (a reviewer needed an Italian IP for the Trenitalia app and got it), and the app stays online with zero balance so you can buy more without Wi-Fi. The site and app are clumsy, and our support ticket went unanswered for 24 hours, the worst outcome we tested. On price Ubigi sits just below the market average, with the cheapest 30-day unlimited median in our comparison. Our Ubigi review has the details. Plans at Ubigi.

Nomad eSIM in our hands
Nomad is a good choice for the Bernese Oberland and for travelers who can fix an eSIM themselves. It worked well for 32 of 42 travelers who reported from Switzerland (76%), strong evidence but the weakest record in the Best group. The successes are specific: all three reports from Interlaken worked, one of them on an 8-day drive from the UK with "fast Internet in the mountainous region of interlaken and grindelwald" (20 Aug 2026), a 20 GB plan held up in cities and rural areas alike, and a motorcyclist crossing Liechtenstein, Switzerland, France, Italy and Austria kept a signal in all of them.
The ten misses fall into two groups. The first is activation and reconnection: a 10 GB plan that would not activate on arrival (two hours of chat got a 1 GB plan working instead), a plan that stopped after three days of a 30-day term, lost reception when crossing from France with no reconnect, a traveler in Geneva whose eSIM only ever loaded maps, and a Europe plan that worked in France and nowhere else. The second group is the unlimited plan: one traveler compared it side by side with a partner's fixed plan in the same places and found the unlimited one much worse, and another got 4G with minimal signal where he expected 5G. Two reviewers also called the Alps a problem for maps, and one found his IP address placed in Belgium, which blocked some Swiss websites. When things went wrong, the chatbot did not help, which matches our test: the bot looped on an APN question with no route to a person.
Nomad's Switzerland page names Salt and Sunrise and states that the unlimited plan is slowed hard after the daily allowance; the plan terms in our comparison tool put that allowance at 2 GB a day [8]. The Switzerland plans run from 1 GB for 3 or 7 days to 50 GB for 30 days, with unlimited for 3, 5, 7 or 10 days, plus Europe and Global plans; hotspot is allowed, add-on data can be bought on some plans, and some eSIMs need manual activation, so read the install email [8]. The app is fast and has a home-screen widget showing remaining data, which reviewers like. The price position is the second drawback: Nomad is at the market average worldwide but above it in Switzerland. Our Nomad review has the support test. Plans at Nomad.

eSIM4Travel eSIM in our hands
eSIM4Travel is the pick for anyone whose first question is price: it is the cheapest provider in Switzerland in our comparison, by a wide margin at 5 to 20 GB. It worked well for 6 of 6 travelers who reported from Switzerland (100%), a limited sample, so the record is encouraging rather than proven. The review texts we have are thin. One traveler used the eSIM from May to Sep 2024 across Switzerland and six other countries, called it the best value he had found, and added that picking the network by hand often gave better reception. Another, in May 2024, complained of poor reception and slow data in Switzerland and concluded that cheap is not always best.
Our hands-on test is the main evidence here, and it was run in Switzerland, which is rare for us: the eSIM installed from a QR code and worked at once on 4G, with no throttling and a hard stop at the data limit. The help desk was the best we tested: a short bot, one click to a person, who solved the problem and suggested switching network. The downsides are real: there is no app, the card number is typed by hand with no Google Pay, and once the data runs out you cannot reach the shop without Wi-Fi.
The Switzerland plans run from 100 MB for a day to 50 GB for 30 days, with unlimited for 3 to 30 days at 3 GB a day at full speed, then slowed hard; its page names Sunrise and Salt, and you pick the network inside the plan [10]. Hotspot is allowed, you must activate within 90 days of purchase, and the plan starts on the first connection [10]. Best Europe and Global plans cover Switzerland too. It suits trips of 1 to 20 GB where saving money matters more than an app; for 50 GB or more its price edge fades. Our eSIM4Travel review shows the test. Plans at eSIM4Travel.

Airalo eSIM in our hands
Airalo is not a pick for Switzerland: it worked well for only 17 of 35 travelers who reported from here (49%), the worst record of the 14 on a strong sample. The clearest pattern is the regional Europe eSIM. Six travelers wrote that a Europe or Europe and UK plan worked in Britain, France or Ireland and did nothing in Switzerland; one in Zurich saw a connected icon with "almost nill" speed and had to buy a separate Switzerland eSIM from Airalo, which then worked. The Switzerland-only eSIM failed too, for at least seven travelers in June and July 2026, some after hours with the help desk; one unlimited plan stopped on day five and the refund request went unanswered. Geneva produced three misses, Montreux two weeks of "very poor access" (15 Jul 2026), and one traveler found speed poor as soon as he left the cities. The successes are multi-country users who passed through, a train trip from Paris on the Europe package, and a hiker on the Tour du Mont Blanc who had signal in remote alpine stretches.
Airalo's Switzerland page names Sunrise as the network, and the product is called Pilatus Mobile [9]. The plans run from 1 GB to 50 GB and unlimited, which the plan terms slow after 3 GB a day; the Discover+ global plan adds calls and texts with a US number. Our test found the purchase and install easy, but Airalo is among the three most expensive providers in Switzerland, and it was the only Best-group-sized sample here that failed for half. Our Airalo review explains the test. Plans at Airalo.

Global YO eSIM in our hands
Global YO is a good budget option for fixed plans, with a small sample behind it: it worked well for 7 of 7 travelers who reported from Switzerland (100%), limited evidence. The successes describe stable data on a two-week European trip, in the Swiss mountains, and on a trip to France and Switzerland where in-app calls to a French landline worked. The catch is the so-called unlimited or day plan: two travelers in August 2024 found it slowed to a crawl after 1 GB each day. One wrote: "Unlimited data sounds great, but 7GB for 7 days doesn't." He was refunded and bought a 20 GB plan, which worked fine. One Swiss customer wrote that the eSIM used Sunrise and called it weak in French-speaking Switzerland, and another found his IP address placed in the US or France.
Global YO sells Switzerland plans from 1 GB for 3 days up to 100 GB for 60 days, plus Europe Explorer and Global Explorer plans; the day plans are labelled 3 GB a day in their name but 1 GB a day in their terms, so treat them with care. Its page does not name a Swiss network that we could verify. In our test you must buy in the app, the APN is "globaldata", a deleted eSIM cannot be reinstalled, and support took 10 minutes for a template reply. It is among the three cheapest providers in Switzerland, so it suits price-driven buyers who install at home. Our Global YO review has the details. Plans at Global YO.

Yesim eSIM in our hands
Yesim has a clean but small record: it worked well for 6 of 6 travelers who reported from Switzerland (100%), limited evidence with no misses to describe. Yesim is the one provider in this set based in Switzerland, though its page names no Swiss network we could verify and gives no fair-use threshold for its unlimited plans.
Its Switzerland catalogue is mostly unlimited data sold by the day, from 1 to 30 days, with fixed plans from 500 MB for a day to 30 GB for 30 days and Europe and Global bundles. Two findings from our test place it here: the help desk took 15 to 60 minutes per reply, among the slowest we tested, and our plan started at purchase rather than at first connection, so buy close to the trip or use the activate-later option. Its fixed plans are dearer than the market here while its unlimited plans sit at market. Experienced travelers who want flexible day-by-day unlimited data might still choose it; our Yesim review has the support test. Plans at Yesim.

Roamless is a US provider built around one global eSIM for 203 destinations, paid with pay-as-you-go credit. It was fast and unthrottled in our test, and travelers report it working in 91% of cases. Its weak point is buying: the website forces you into the app, and large data amounts cost more than most rivals.

Roamless eSIM in our hands
Roamless suits light users who hop between countries, and its Swiss record is clean on a small sample: it worked well for 5 of 5 travelers who reported from Switzerland (100%), limited evidence. The reports come from Zurich, Baden and a trip from Italy with "high speed and no downtime"; one Swiss customer wrote in January 2026 that he could choose between Sunrise and Salt in the app and that in-app calling worked in Switzerland. Another installed it in Zurich after his German plan stopped at the border.
Roamless sells one global eSIM with pay-as-you-go credit that does not expire, Switzerland plans from 700 MB to 200 GB, either for 30 days or with no expiry, Europe and Global plans, and a free trial plan for new users. Its page lists Sunrise and Salt, though we saw that only in a search result and did not open the page; our comparison tool lists Sunrise. There is no unlimited plan and no throttling is claimed. In our test the preselected APN did not work until we switched it, and the speed test failed until we picked another network by hand; credit is cheap for 1 GB but dear from 10 GB up, and overall Roamless sits at the market average in Switzerland. Our Roamless review has the APN fix. Plans at Roamless.

GigSky eSIM in our hands
GigSky connects but is often slow, which is why it is not a pick. It worked well for 11 of 14 travelers who reported from Switzerland (79%), limited evidence. The three misses were speed and consistency rather than dead zones: one couple found the data unusable for maps in Bern, Paris and London and switched provider; another traveler on a free plan got 2G-to-3G speeds across five countries; a third connected only about 60% of the time, and a short break in Geneva in March 2025 produced no connection at all and a refund. The successes include a Samsung user who activated on landing and had great speeds "everywhere from cities to mountains" (2 Aug 2026), a two-week drive through Switzerland, Italy and Austria, and several Visa cardholders using the free perk plans.
GigSky sells Switzerland plans from 1 GB for 7 days up to 20 GB for 90 days and 50 GB for 180 days, a 1-day unlimited pass, and Cruise plans that cover Switzerland as land coverage. Its Swiss network is not named anywhere we could verify. Two test findings matter: the app stays partly online after the data runs out, so you can buy another plan without Wi-Fi, and the help desk answered at once. Unusually for GigSky, it is cheaper than the market average in Switzerland. Our GigSky review explains the cruise plans. Plans at GigSky.

GoMoWorld eSIM in our hands
GoMoWorld is the second-cheapest provider in Switzerland and the best value for heavy data, but it has a trap that explains several of its failures: the plan does nothing until you press Start in the app. It worked well for 11 of 15 travelers who reported from Switzerland (73%), limited evidence. Two of the four misses were plans that were never started, including a family of four whose eSIMs all stayed dead after crossing the border and cost them 60 euros in roaming. Two more families, each on several iPhones, saw only a 3G icon the whole time in Switzerland and could barely load maps. One reviewer who had been caught before wrote on 6 Jul 2026: "This time I did make sure to start the plan from the app! Then everything worked flawlessly." The successes include a month in Switzerland, trips from France and Andorra, and a free trial tested here before a trip to The Gambia.
The Switzerland plans are 4 GB for a week and 40, 75 or 500 GB for 30 days, plus a Europe plan up to 35 GB; its page promises 5G, hotspot and a European VPN, keeps plans valid until activated, and offers a refund if a plan cannot be activated, but does not name a Swiss network [13]. The eSIM comes only through the app (no QR, one account per device), the help desk is a bot outside office hours, and we tested it in Austria, where it was the fastest and least throttled eSIM we have measured. Our GoMoWorld review has the Start-button walk-through. Plans at GoMoWorld.

Jetpac eSIM in our hands
Jetpac's Switzerland plan did better than its Europe plan, and both cost more than anyone else's here. It worked well for 8 of 11 travelers who reported from Switzerland (73%), limited evidence. Both Zurich reports worked, one on a business trip with a stable connection, and a traveler in November 2024 had no issues across Switzerland, Austria and Germany. The misses: a returning customer whose Europe region eSIM "could hardly connect to LTE sometime even just 3G and never to 5G" (2 Aug 2026) after a fine earlier trip on the Switzerland plan; a two-day visit with no connection at all; and a holiday-home stay where speeds were a fraction of a regular SIM's in every part of Switzerland. One 5 GB pack vanished in two days because the phone's system services used 4 GB, and support took hours to reply.
The Switzerland packs run from 3 GB to 40 GB, and unlimited from 3 to 30 days at 3 GB per 24 hours, then slowed hard, with unlimited hotspot; the Europe plan's 7- and 10-day unlimited options are 4G only in our comparison tool [12]. WhatsApp, Google Maps, Uber and Grab keep working after the data runs out on packs of 3 GB or more, voice packs can be bought in the app, and a delayed flight gets you a free lounge [12]. Jetpac's page does not name a Swiss network; its Europe plans in our comparison tool are listed as Salt and Sunrise. It is the most expensive provider in Switzerland in our comparison, and the site and app were rough in our test. Our Jetpac review has the details. Plans at Jetpac.

Saily eSIM in our hands
Saily has the smoothest app and install we tested, but its Swiss record is thin and its price position here is the second worst. It worked well for 5 of 7 travelers who reported from Switzerland (71%), limited evidence. The two successes were quick: "2 minutes and internet going in Switzerland." The misses are telling. One traveler never saw 5G and found LTE slow to non-existent wherever he went; one in Zurich could not install the eSIM at all and was offered a refund only in Saily credit; and a family who chose Saily because they had read it used Swisscom got Sunrise instead and had too little signal in Crans-Montana to open the directions to their rental. "Throughout the Alps, it was weak." (2 Apr 2026)
Saily's Switzerland plans are 1 GB for 7 days and 3 to 20 GB for 30 days, with unlimited for 15 days at 5 GB a day, then slowed hard, and unlimited hotspot; its page does not name the network, the activation window is 180 days, and an optional US number is available [11]. Europe and Global plans cover Switzerland too. Our test found the help desk and the in-app install the best of the 14, with a built-in ad blocker and virtual location. The drawback is price: Saily is among the two most expensive providers in Switzerland. First-time eSIM users who value hand-holding over price might still choose it; our Saily review has the details. ByteSIM eSIM in our hands
ByteSIM has too few reports to judge: it worked well for 1 of 1 travelers who reported from Switzerland, a visitor from Japan in October 2024 who used it in the UK, Switzerland and Italy with no problem except tethering, which WhatsApp support fixed quickly. Its Swiss network is not named anywhere we could verify.
The catalogue is the largest here: Switzerland plans from 500 MB for a day to 300 GB, in daily-allowance families (500 MB, 1, 2, 3 or 10 GB a day), fixed plans and unlimited for 1 to 30 days, with longer validity costing more. There are no top-ups. In our test the checkout demanded a phone number and full postal address, the app threw install errors, the promised 5G came through as 4G, and WhatsApp support did not answer within 15 minutes. It sits slightly below the market average in Switzerland and suits experienced users who want a local payment method. Our ByteSIM review has the details. Plans at ByteSIM.

Best eSIM Plans for Switzerland
Price per GB in Switzerland by eSIM Provider
How much does each provider charge per GB in Switzerland? The chart below compares plans of 1 to 10 GB that last 6 to 14 days, the usual range for a one- or two-week trip. Provider websites show only their own plans, so this side-by-side view is one you would otherwise have to calculate yourself. A shorter bar means a lower price per GB.

How much data do you need for Switzerland? The reviews give real numbers: one Ubigi user got through 13 GB in two weeks, 2 GB of it on Google Maps; a Nomad user on a 20 GB plan had 17 GB left after 14 days of maps and driving; another used 3.2 GB of 10 GB in two days; and a motorcyclist uploading videos every day used 35 GB of 50 in 12 days. The tables below compare plans at 2, 5, 10 and 20 GB and unlimited. For a trip that combines Switzerland with its neighbours, one plan is simpler than two: compare plans that cover Switzerland and Italy, or read our guides to eSIMs for Italy, France and Germany.

Best eSIM for Zurich, Geneva and Interlaken, plus the Alps
Traveler reports name 20 places in Switzerland, but only Zurich, Geneva and Interlaken have three or more, and only Nomad has three reports in one place. Everywhere else the country pick, Maya Mobile, applies; its own place-level reports are one from Lucerne and many that name "the mountains" without a town.
| Where you are going | What the reports show | Our pick |
|---|---|---|
| Zurich | Holafly 1/2, Ubigi 1/1, Nomad 2/2, Airalo 1/1, Roamless 2/2, Jetpac 2/2, Saily 0/1 | Country pick applies, no provider has 3 or more reports here |
| Geneva | Holafly 1/1, Ubigi 1/1, Nomad 0/1, Airalo 1/3, GigSky 1/2 | Country pick applies, no provider has 3 or more reports here |
| Interlaken | Nomad 3/3 | Nomad (all three reports worked, including the mountain roads around Grindelwald) |

Best eSIM for Zurich
No provider has enough Zurich reports for a city pick, so the country pick, Maya Mobile, applies; one Maya user wrote that his signal stayed strong even at the summit of the hills above Zurich. Of the eleven Zurich reports, nine worked: both Jetpac users (one stable on a business trip, one spotty but online), both Nomad users, both Roamless users, one Ubigi user who also covered Lucerne, and one Airalo user, though only after his regional Europe eSIM showed a connected icon with almost no speed and he bought the Switzerland-specific plan.
The two misses are the ones to learn from. A Holafly user in May 2026 found the connection "awful everywhere" in the Zurich area with very slow internet, which is the one Holafly miss in any Swiss city and fits the speed cap we measured. A Saily customer in Zurich could not get the eSIM to install on a recent iPhone at all, and the refund came only as Saily credit.
Best eSIM for Geneva
Geneva is the weakest city in the reports, and again the country pick applies. Only four of eight reports worked: a Ubigi user with "excellent signal everywhere around Geneva", a Holafly user who landed to find his EU SIM's 5G gone and then had a stable connection, one Airalo user, and one GigSky user who connected the moment she landed. Airalo accounts for three of the four misses: no data in Geneva for one traveler, long gaps without data in a major city for another, and connection problems for a third. The other GigSky user bought a plan for a short break in March 2025 and could not use any of it in Geneva.
Two points on arrival. Geneva airport sits on the French border, and a Maya user who seemed to have no service found his phone had latched onto a French network first; it worked as soon as it switched to a Swiss one. And the region to the east is where Holafly's and Saily's slow-signal complaints cluster: Neuchâtel, Montreux and Crans-Montana all appear in misses or caveats, and one Global YO customer called the network his eSIM used weak in French-speaking Switzerland. If you are staying west of Bern, Holafly's three-network list is the strongest argument in the reports, with the speed cap as its cost.
Best eSIM for Interlaken
Nomad is the pick for Interlaken: all three travelers who reported from there had it working, one on an 8-day drive with fast internet in Interlaken and Grindelwald, one in "remote areas of interlaken" on a trip that went on to Vienna and Prague, and one who used it daily across Paris, Interlaken, Cologne and Amsterdam. No other provider has an Interlaken report, so there are no runners-up to compare.
Higher up the picture is mixed. A Ubigi user had data at Jungfraujoch and in the Valais, but another lost it near Bachalpsee above Grindelwald, and Nomad users warned that online maps in the Alps generally were a problem. Holafly's reports from the Glacier Express, the GoldenPass Line and the Swiss side of the Bernina Express all worked, which matches its three-network list. For the ski resorts of Graubünden and Ticino there are no traveler reports yet; the regulator's coverage atlas is the only cross-operator map, and its figures rest on operator-supplied models rather than measurements [2].
Local SIM Cards and Operator eSIMs in Switzerland
A Switzerland SIM card for tourists beats a travel eSIM in two cases only: you need a Swiss phone number, or you want Swisscom's network specifically. For a data-only trip of up to about three weeks, a travel eSIM is cheaper than every local option, usually by a wide margin, and spares you a shop visit and an ID check. The local prices below were checked on 30 Aug 2026.
Swisscom's tourist product is Prepaid Flat: CHF 20.00 for 7 days, CHF 40.00 for 15, CHF 65.00 for 30 and CHF 150.00 for 90, with unlimited data, unlimited calls in Switzerland and unlimited SMS, but with a download speed cap stated on the page; the CHF 19.90 activation fee was waived when we checked [3]. The eSIM is sold online, but activation runs through My Swisscom, and Swisscom's own FAQ says the login can demand two-factor authentication with a Swiss phone number; its remedies are to switch off any VPN, wait until you are in Switzerland, or visit a shop. The plan gives you a new Swiss number, the SIM expires after 12 months of non-use, and shops sit at all major railway stations and at Zurich Airport [3].
Sunrise sells a prepaid travel eSIM for CHF 19.90 with CHF 20.00 of credit; its Unlimited CH option costs CHF 2.50 per 24 hours of actual use and includes unlimited data, calls and SMS within Switzerland for that day. An ID check is legally required: you upload your ID and record a short video selfie, and the eSIM activates after verification. The eSIM can be registered with a foreign address, physical SIMs ship only within Switzerland and Liechtenstein, and the SIM is deleted after 17 months of non-use [4].
Salt PrePay is the cheapest local route: the SIM is free with CHF 10.00 of credit, Unlimited Surf costs CHF 1.99 a day, and data packs cost CHF 9.95 for 1 GB, CHF 14.95 for 5 GB or CHF 29.95 for 25 GB; calls cost CHF 0.49 per call and SMS CHF 0.12. Two catches: data packs are bought at costcontrol.salt.ch over the mobile network only, not over Wi-Fi, and the PrePay page does not say whether an eSIM is available. Salt SIMs are sold in its stores, at Mobilezone, SBB ticket machines, post offices and kiosks [5].
At the airports, Swisscom's own page confirms a shop at Zurich Airport, but whether the airport shops sell eSIMs to tourists or only physical SIMs differs between traveler reports, so plan on Swisscom's online eSIM, with its two-factor catch, if you want one. Third-party reports put airport shop hours at roughly 08:00 to 21:00, which we could not confirm, so a late arrival should install a travel eSIM before flying. One third-party report from January 2025 says the duty-free Mobile Corner at Zurich sells only Lebara and Yallo SIMs whose "Europe" or "World" data works in Switzerland alone; we could not confirm it, so read the pack before paying.
Mobile Networks in Switzerland
Switzerland has three networks, Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt, and almost every travel eSIM uses the last two. The regulator's figures at the end of 2025 put Swisscom at 99% 5G population coverage and 88% for its faster 5G+ layer, Sunrise above 99% 5G including standalone 5G with 79% 5G broadband, and Salt at 99.9% across all generations by its own claim [1]. Those are population figures: the federal coverage atlas models coverage on a 100 m grid from data the operators submit voluntarily, and operators who decline simply do not appear [2].
Independent testing separates them more than the regulator's numbers do. The connect network test 2026, measured by umlaut and published in November 2025, placed Swisscom first with Sunrise and Salt close behind, all three rated outstanding; according to that test, Swisscom's lead opens in small towns, on rail and in rural 5G, Sunrise leads narrowly in big-city data, and Salt gained most in rural 5G and has the best gaming latency. Older third-party comparisons described gaps on Salt's map across Uri, Ticino, Valais, Graubünden and St. Gallen, but they predate Salt's recent gains, so we do not rely on them. No operator publishes a list of dead zones.
Which eSIM rides which network: Holafly names Salt, Sunrise and Swisscom [6]; Ubigi [7], Nomad [8] and eSIM4Travel [10] name Salt and Sunrise; Airalo names Sunrise only [9]; Roamless lists Sunrise and Salt on a page we saw only in a search result; Saily, Jetpac and GoMoWorld did not name a network on their pages when we checked in August 2026; and for Maya Mobile, Global YO, Yesim, GigSky and ByteSIM we could not confirm the network. In practice this means that in the small towns and on the mountain railways where Swisscom tests strongest, only Holafly offers a route onto it. Reviews show the gap in both directions: a Saily customer who expected Swisscom got Sunrise and lost signal in Crans-Montana, while Holafly users rode the Glacier Express and GoldenPass Line with data.
Two more facts for your trip. The fallback layers are gone: Sunrise shut 3G in mid-2025, Swisscom at the end of 2025, and Salt is expected to by the end of 2026, so a phone that shows "3G" on a GoMoWorld eSIM, as several reviewers reported, is on the way to nothing rather than a slower connection [1]. And the picture may widen: according to the connect magazine, Salt and Sunrise signed a letter of intent in August 2026 to share rural radio sites, which would help most travel eSIMs sold for Switzerland, but it has no timeline and needs regulatory approval. Our guide to eSIMs with several networks and how to switch operator explains how to pick a network by hand, which one eSIM4Travel reviewer found gave better reception here.
How to Set Up an eSIM for Switzerland
Install at home, test the install, and keep the eSIM switched off until you cross the border. Almost every plan here starts on the first connection in Switzerland, not at install; the exceptions are Yesim, whose plan started at purchase in our test, GoMoWorld, which needs you to press Start, and some Airalo packages that start at install.
- Check the phone. It must be carrier-unlocked and eSIM-capable; a Nomad user's wife could not connect because her phone was locked. Providers warn that iPhones sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao lack eSIM except for a few models [10]. Our list of phones with eSIM support covers the rest.
- Buy with the activation window in mind: 90 days for eSIM4Travel [10], 180 days for Saily [11], three months for Jetpac [12], six months for an unscanned Ubigi QR code [7], and 30 to 60 days for Nomad depending on the plan page [8]. Yesim buyers should order close to the trip.
- Install on Wi-Fi at home. QR codes arrive by email from eSIM4Travel, Airalo, Maya, Ubigi, Yesim, ByteSIM, Jetpac, Nomad and Holafly; GoMoWorld, Saily, Roamless and GigSky install only through their apps, and Global YO must be bought in the app. Our guides to adding an eSIM on iPhone and on Samsung walk through the screens.
- Set the APN where the provider needs it: "globaldata" for Maya Mobile and Global YO, "gigsky" for GigSky, "mobiledata" for Ubigi; Roamless worked for us only after we picked "Proximus Internet" by hand. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line and make the eSIM your mobile-data line; the most common Maya miss in Switzerland was a primary SIM still set as the data line.
- Press Start if it is GoMoWorld. Nothing happens otherwise, and two of its four Swiss misses were plans that were never started.
- On arrival, give it a few minutes and restart the phone if needed; Holafly and Maya users reported that a restart was what finally registered the new network, especially after crossing a border. If it still fails, our eSIM troubleshooting guide covers APN, roaming and network selection, which were behind most of the misses in the Swiss reports.
Calls and SMS in Switzerland
No travel eSIM in this article gives you a Swiss phone number; the calling code is +41, and a Swiss number comes only from a local SIM. For most trips that does not matter: calls go over WhatsApp or a similar app, and the Swiss reports are full of travelers who did exactly that. Where it does matter is a bank or ticket site that sends an SMS code to a Swiss number, or a reviewer's case of needing to phone an airline from a data-only Maya eSIM.
Several providers include calling of some kind. Airalo's Discover+ global plan, which covers Switzerland in our comparison tool, bundles calls and texts on a US number. Roamless has in-app calling and an optional second number; one Swiss customer tested the calls here and they worked. Global YO's YO SHOUT made an outgoing call to a French landline for one reviewer, with low volume, and failed on a special number. Jetpac sells voice packs in the app, and a Saily add-on gives a US number after an ID check [11]. For incoming SMS codes, Holafly Plans, Saily Ultra and Yesim sell numbers that can receive texts. If you need real Swiss minutes, Swisscom's Prepaid Flat includes unlimited calls and SMS [3], Sunrise's daily rate includes calls and SMS within Switzerland [4], and Salt charges per call and per SMS [5].
Free eSIM Data for Switzerland
GoMoWorld gives new users a free 1-day, 1 GB trial that works in Switzerland [13]; one reviewer tested it here before relying on the paid plan abroad. Roamless lists a free Switzerland trial plan in our comparison tool for new users, with 700 MB and a 30-day term from activation, on top of a small free credit on every new account. GigSky offers a free 100 MB trial and free plans for some Visa cardholders, which is how several of its Swiss reviewers travelled, and Nomad gives a free 1 GB trial. Holafly's "Always On" extra adds a small monthly allowance after a plan ends if you keep the eSIM [6]. Our round-up of free eSIM data plans and trials lists the terms.

Summary: the best eSIM for Switzerland
Based on 345 traveler reports from Switzerland and our hands-on tests, we recommend Maya Mobile for most trips in 2026: it worked well for 84 of 89 travelers, including in the Alps, and its global unlimited plan is cheaper than any other 30-day unlimited plan we compared; its weak spots are a help desk behind a bot and no plan under 3 days. Holafly had the best record, 52 of 53, and names Salt, Sunrise and Swisscom, which showed on the scenic trains and in villages, but our test found its speed capped from the start and its hotspot is limited. Ubigi (47 of 54) is the choice for fixed data or a cheaper 30-day unlimited plan with a published fair-use rule, as long as you never need the help desk, which did not answer us.
Nomad (32 of 42) was strongest around Interlaken and weakest on its unlimited plan and at activation, with a chatbot that could not help. eSIM4Travel is the cheapest provider in Switzerland and worked well for 6 of 6 travelers, with the best help desk we tested, but it has no app and no way to top up without Wi-Fi. Airalo, the biggest name, worked for only 17 of 35 travelers here, most often on its Europe plan, which is why it is not among the picks. Whichever provider fits your trip, the best eSIM for Switzerland is the one installed and tested at home, then switched on at the border.
