Best eSIM for Honolulu (2026): Tested Providers, Oahu Coverage and Island-Hopping

Key Takeaways

Key Takeaways

For Honolulu we recommend GigSky, which island reviewers rated highly on both Oahu and Maui. GigSky users reported good coverage on Maui and everything working well in Hawaii, and it roams on Verizon, which reaches furthest into the valleys.

  • Positive Hawaii reports on land, from Waikiki to Maui.
  • Verizon and T-Mobile on one plan, plus a free 100 MB trial with no card.
  • 1 GB for a week costs $4.99, 10 GB for a month $21.74.
  • Holafly has the best Hawaii record of all, five positive reports against one, so it is worth the higher price if you want unlimited data on the beach. eSIM4Travel is the cheapest for a light island week at about $8 for 5 GB.

Honolulu and Hawaii: Which eSIM to Bring to the Islands

Honolulu is the gateway to Hawaii, and Oahu alone is a full trip: Waikiki Beach, Pearl Harbor, the hike up Diamond Head, snorkelling at Hanauma Bay and the surf breaks of the North Shore. Many visitors add Maui, Kauai or the Big Island on a 40-minute inter-island flight. Your phone books the tours, finds the food trucks and shows you the way over the Pali Highway.

Hawaii is a US state, so every United States eSIM plan works here, and Ubigi even names Hawaii specifically in its coverage. The three national carriers all operate on the islands. The differences show up on the coast roads, in the valleys and at the airport, where several travelers in our review set landed without a connection.

Vefru pays for every eSIM we review and tests it end to end: checkout, installation, speed, support. If a provider stranded a traveler at Daniel K. Inouye airport or failed on a cruise to the islands, you will read it here. For the whole country, start with our best eSIM for the USA guide.

How well each provider's eSIM works in United States

The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in United States. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

Which eSIM Providers Are Cheapest in the US?

Providers sell different amounts of data at different prices, so price per GB is the fairest way to compare them. Each bar below shows a provider's median price per GB for its United States plans with 1 to 10 GB of data and 6 to 14 days of validity, which covers most one- and two-week trips. The shorter the bar, the less you pay for each GB. A United States plan costs the same wherever you use it in the country, so these prices apply to Honolulu too.

    Generated 28.09.2026 08:03

A low price per GB isn't the whole story. Compare it with how often each provider worked for travelers in the United States in the chart above, and check the speed caps and plan sizes in the provider sections below before you buy.

Hawaii eSIM Plans: The Key Figures

Hawaii is a US state, so the figures above, drawn live from our database of United States plans, apply on every island. The same plan covers a stopover in Los Angeles or Seattle on the way in, and only Alaska is left out by some providers. Between islands you fly, and your eSIM never notices; on an inter-island cruise it sleeps at sea.

Networks on Oahu, Maui and the Other Islands

Travel eSIMs rent space on the three US carriers, T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon, all of which operate across the Hawaiian islands; UScellular, once a fourth name, joined T-Mobile in August 2025. In Honolulu and Waikiki any of the three works well. In the valleys and along the windward coast, which carrier your eSIM lands on decides whether you have signal at all.

Opensignal's July 2026 report clocked a 192.5 Mbps download figure for T-Mobile, AT&T (96.0 Mbps) and Verizon (89.4 Mbps), with Verizon winning for coverage, with AT&T leading time on network at 99.6%. On Oahu that reads as T-Mobile for speed in town and Verizon for reach into the valleys, with AT&T as the dependable middle. Our guide to multi-network eSIMs explains how to switch networks on the North Shore.

In Honolulu, Waikiki and along the south shore, all three networks run 4G and 5G, and reviewers on Holafly, GigSky, Jetpac and Ubigi report good speeds. A Ubigi customer put it well: usually good, sometimes bad in Honolulu. Another Ubigi user blamed the local AT&T and T-Mobile networks rather than the eSIM. Roaming eSIMs ride on those carriers, so island coverage mirrors theirs, with T-Mobile leading on speed in town and Verizon reaching further into the valleys.

The gaps start once you leave Honolulu. The windward coast, the Ka'a'awa valley and stretches of the North Shore between Haleiwa and Kahuku have weak or no signal. A Nomad reviewer reported slow or absent service around 40% of the time while touring the island. On Maui, the Road to Hana loses coverage for long stretches, and Haleakala's summit road is patchy. Download offline maps for every island drive.

Check any vacation rental on the windward coast, or a hotel in Hana on Maui, on the national broadband map from the FCC or T-Mobile coverage map. Both are carrier models for outdoor use at 5 Mbps, so a beach shown as covered may still have nothing under the palms. Our 4G vs 5G guide covers whether 5G matters on a holiday that is mostly spent in the water.

    Eight Providers Tested for Hawaii

Saily took 8.50 in our test on the strength of the best app of the eight (9/10) and top support (10/10), and the app is the point on a holiday: buy, top up and check usage from a beach chair without hunting for a QR code. Nomad lists all three US networks with T-Mobile first and scored 6.83 in our test: good speed (8/10), fair prices (8/10), poor support (2/10). Oahu was unkind to it. One traveler had lots of trouble on the island, another described slow or no service about 40% of the time while touring Oahu after a fine trip in Seattle, and a third had good coverage everywhere except the international airport. Jetpac, Ubigi, Roamless and Others in Hawaii

Its 30-day plans start at $12.99 for 5 GB, unlimited gives 3 GB a day, and WhatsApp, Uber and Google Maps keep working after your data ends. Ubigi (which roams on T-Mobile alone and sells seven days of unlimited data for $25, capped at 25 GB) names Hawaii explicitly in its coverage and was usually good in Honolulu with the odd bad patch; one user found it fast in both Hawaii and Japan. Roamless (Verizon and AT&T, a US number via Roamless Numbers, 43 of 47 positive) was brilliant for one traveler on a three-week Pacific cruise that called at Hawaii. GoMoWorld (8.17) topped our speed test yet has few US reviews to judge by, ByteSIM (5.33) sells plans with a US number, and Yesim (6.17) is cheap on promotion and weak once you need help. All appear in our US comparison tool.

Read the unlimited tables with the daily cap in mind: 1 GB at Global YO, 3 GB at eSIM4Travel and Jetpac, 5 GB at Saily, after which speed drops to 1 Mbps or less until midnight. A holiday that streams on the beach reaches those caps; one that snorkels all day does not. For most island weeks a 5 GB or 10 GB fixed plan is cheaper and never slows.

Data Needs for a Beach Week or an Island-Hopping Trip

A Hawaii holiday is lighter on data than a city break. You spend hours on the beach or in the water, and the phone comes out for maps to the next bay, tour bookings, tide and surf forecasts, restaurant searches and photos. Budget 0.5 GB to 0.7 GB a day, so 5 GB to 7 GB for ten days. Rental car GPS directions around Oahu or on the Road to Hana adds a few hundred megabytes on those days.

Streaming is the wild card. Resort Wi-Fi in Waikiki is usually included, so use it for evening video and photo backups. If you plan to stream on the beach or share a hotspot with family, take 10 GB to 20 GB or an unlimited plan. A Holafly reviewer found the speeds fine for search, maps and news videos without live streaming, which describes a typical island week well. Ubigi's unlimited plan caps at 25 GB, which is plenty for two weeks.

Download offline maps of Oahu and any island you visit before you leave home, and set video apps to Wi-Fi only so resort Wi-Fi carries the evening streaming. Our data-saving tips for vacation list more. For an estimate by activity use the travel data calculator, or check our 2 GB, 5 GB and 10 GB explainers to learn what each cover in practice.

Buying a SIM in Honolulu vs Installing an eSIM Before You Fly

Honolulu has carrier stores in Ala Moana and along Kalakaua Avenue, and their visitor passes work on the islands like anywhere else in the US. T-Mobile's Prepaid US Pass eSIM (May 2026) costs $25 for 7 days, $30 for 10 and $35 for 14, plus Hawaii's 4.712% general excise tax on Oahu. It includes unlimited calls and texts in the US, Canada and Mexico, unlimited 5G data with 50 GB at priority speed and a hotspot allowance of at least 14 GB. Visible, the Verizon-owned prepaid brand, offers an eSIM Travel Pass at $25 for a week or $45 for a month.

A borrowed physical SIM rarely works either, since US-market iPhones from the 14 onward lack a SIM tray.

Our rule for Hawaii: a beach week under 5 GB works out much cheaper on a travel eSIM, given 1 GB from eSIM4Travel at just $2.30 against $25 plus tax. Above 10 GB, or if a tour operator insists on texting a US number, the pass becomes a fair alternative to unlimited data from Holafly, GigSky or Jetpac. The full comparison is in our eSIM vs SIM guide.

Free eSIM Data for Landing in Honolulu

Honolulu is the airport where reviewers most often landed without data, so a free fallback is worth having. Roamless gives new customers 500 MB free with a first purchase, roams on Verizon and AT&T, and had 43 positive US reports out of 47, including a brilliant Pacific cruise that stopped in Hawaii.

GigSky offers a 100 MB of free trial data on a 7-day eSIM, no card needed, and GigSky reviewers reported good coverage on Maui and Oahu. Every free option we know is in our free eSIM guide, and the US comparison tool lists free plans next to paid ones.

Hawaii Traveler Reports: 27 Reviews Sorted

Twenty-seven reviews in our set mention Honolulu, Oahu, Maui or Hawaii, a large sample for a destination so far from the mainland, and cruise passengers and island-hoppers are well represented. Reviews are written at the extremes, so read this section as warnings and confirmations rather than a ranking.

Holafly is the Hawaii favourite in our review set. Travelers report it working really well across Hawaii, easy to set up, with amazing speeds. One used a single unlimited plan from landing in San Diego through Hawaii to Las Vegas over three weeks without a fault. Another confirmed it worked in every US state they visited including Hawaii. The one Holafly complaint covered LA, Honolulu and San Francisco together, describing the connection as terrible throughout.

GigSky worked well on land: good in Maui, everything great in Hawaii, would use again. Its weakness was the water. On a Holland America cruise from Vancouver to Hawaii the eSIM did not connect at sea despite the route being listed. It only worked after arrival five days later, and support then helped fix the at-sea issue for the return. Another traveler could not connect on a Royal Caribbean ship or on land in Hawaii at all.

The working-versus-failing matrix above tallies working and failing reports for the whole United States, and our eSIM customer support test shows who answers when you are stuck without an Uber at Daniel K. Inouye airport.

Installing and Activating an eSIM Before the Long Flight to Honolulu

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, because Honolulu's airport is where Airalo and Nomad users in our reviews most often landed without a connection. Every provider here allows install-now, activate-later, and problems are far easier to fix before a ten-hour flight than after one.

    1. Check the phone. It needs eSIM hardware and must be carrier-unlocked; a locked phone is the number one cause of failure. Check the model in our phones with eSIM support guide, and remember that most iPhones bought in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macau lack eSIM.
    2. Time the purchase. Some plans start on their own if you wait too long after buying: Nomad after 60 days, eSIM4Travel after 90, Saily after 180. For a honeymoon booked a year out, buy Saily or eSIM4Travel early and Nomad last.
    3. Install over home Wi-Fi. Scan the emailed QR code or let the app load the profile, using our iPhone or Samsung guide. If you only received an activation code, turn it into a QR code first.
    4. Keep the profile. Holafly, Global YO, eSIM4Travel and Yesim install once only. The reusable ones are Saily, Nomad, GigSky, Roamless and Ubigi.
    5. On landing in Honolulu: switch the eSIM line on, enable Data Roaming for it, make it the mobile data line and cut mobile data on the home line. If nothing connects, toggle airplane mode, try a manual network selection, and use the airport Wi-Fi to book your ride before you leave the terminal.
    6. Still offline? Inspect the APN (set to globaldata on Global YO; Jetpac publishes US settings) and message support on the airport Wi-Fi. Our eSIM troubleshooting guide walks through the five faults behind most failures.

Arriving at Daniel K. Inouye International: this is the airport where reviewers most often landed without a working eSIM. An Airalo user could not connect in Terminal 1 and could not order an Uber, and a Nomad traveler had no internet at the airport but good coverage everywhere else on Oahu. Use the airport Wi-Fi to reach support if needed, and book your ride to Waikiki before you leave the terminal. TheBus and taxis do not need an app.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does a United States eSIM work in Hawaii?
Yes. Hawaii is a US state, and every United States plan from the providers above covers it. Ubigi states explicitly that its USA plans cover Hawaii, and Holafly, GigSky, Jetpac and Nomad reviewers all used their US plans on Oahu and Maui. The exception to watch is Alaska, not Hawaii: several providers exclude Alaska from US and North America plans. If you are combining Hawaii with Japan or Australia, a regional or global plan avoids buying two eSIMs.
Is there coverage on the North Shore, the windward coast and the Road to Hana?
Only partly. The windward coast of Oahu, the valleys around Ka'a'awa and stretches of the North Shore between Haleiwa and Kahuku have weak or no signal on any carrier. A Nomad reviewer reported slow or absent service about 40% of the time while touring the island. On Maui, the Road to Hana loses coverage for long stretches and the Haleakala summit road is patchy. Download offline maps and tour details before you set off. Plans that include Verizon reach a little further into the valleys.
Will my eSIM work if I island-hop to Maui, Kauai or the Big Island?
Yes, the same US plan covers all the islands, and inter-island flights are domestic, so nothing is different when you land. GigSky reviewers reported good coverage on Maui, and Holafly customers used one plan across Oahu and Maui. Coverage on the other islands follows the same pattern as Oahu: good in the towns and resort areas, thin in the valleys and on remote coasts. An inter-island cruise is different, because your eSIM stops working at sea and only reconnects in port.
Which eSIM do travelers recommend for Honolulu?
Holafly has the strongest Hawaii record, with five travelers reporting reliable data across Oahu and Maui against one complaint, so it is the safest unlimited choice. Our own pick for most visitors is GigSky, which reviewers praised on Maui and Oahu and which roams on Verizon for the valleys and the North Shore. Jetpac was easy and affordable for one island trip. Nomad drew the most Oahu complaints, including no internet at the airport, so we would skip it here.
Can I use the same eSIM for a stopover in Los Angeles or Seattle on the way to Hawaii?
Yes. A United States plan covers the mainland and Hawaii alike, so the eSIM you install for Honolulu works from the moment you land at LAX or Sea-Tac. Mind one detail: some providers, Airalo among them, start the validity clock on the first network connection, so switching the eSIM on during a six-hour mainland layover uses up part of a short plan. If the layover is long, use the free airport Wi-Fi and keep the eSIM line off until Honolulu. Alaska is the one state several providers exclude, so a Seattle-Anchorage-Honolulu routing needs checking.
Do I need a US phone number in Hawaii?
Rarely. Tour bookings, maps, TheBus app and restaurant searches run on data, and WhatsApp and iMessage keep your home number working. A local number helps if a snorkel operator or a restaurant insists on texting a US number. Saily adds one for a fee with calls and texts, Airalo includes one on its Change Plus plans, and ByteSIM and Roamless bundle numbers too. Otherwise keep your home SIM switched on for incoming texts with its mobile data off, and let the travel eSIM carry the data.

    Our Pick for Honolulu

Every US plan covers Hawaii, so the question is which one holds up off the main roads. GigSky is our pick after positive reports on Oahu and Maui, helped by Verizon on its network list. Holafly has the best island record overall if you want unlimited data.

eSIM4Travel is the cheapest at about $8 for 5 GB, which is plenty for a beach week. Install before you fly, since Honolulu is where travelers most often landed without data, and check today's prices in our US eSIM comparison tool.

    Why can you trust Vefru?

Founders František and Jan experienced problems with mobile data every time they traveled outside the EU. As technology enthusiasts, the idea of traveling abroad without a data connection or risking truly insane roaming fees was unacceptable to them. Regardless of how adventurous the story of walking across Toronto on a winter night without an online map might be, it's not something they would want to repeat.

After the emergence of eSIM and later eSIM travel data package providers, they learned a lot about the technology and industry and decided to share their findings and the comparison tool they created for themselves with others. It now contains more than 20,000 updated eSIM mobile data packages from the most popular providers for more than 170 countries around the world.

Every time you read a guide on Vefru, it is created in the same way the author would research the topic themselves. From contacting locals about the best network operators, to recommending the most advantageous plans for what you really need, to technical guides on how to create a QR code for eSIM or how to troubleshoot eSIM issues. Most articles are created based on topics that the authors themselves have dealt with and for which they found the best solutions.
