Miami, Cruise Ships and the Slow-Speed Problem

Miami is where the United States meets Latin America and the Caribbean. Its airport was the second-busiest US gateway for international visitors in 2025 with 4.7 million arrivals, and PortMiami is the largest cruise port in the world. Between Art Deco South Beach, Wynwood murals, Little Havana and the Everglades an hour west, you will lean on your phone for maps, ride-hailing and translation all day.

Miami is also the one US city where our traveler reviews raised a consistent red flag. Slow LTE, weak signal and drops were reported by users of five different providers. One Saily customer gave up and bought an AT&T plan for $25. That does not mean an eSIM will not work here. It means the choice of provider matters more in Miami than in most places.

Which eSIM Providers Are Cheapest in the US?

Providers sell different amounts of data at different prices, so price per GB is the fairest way to compare them. Each bar below shows a provider's median price per GB for its United States plans with 1 to 10 GB of data and 6 to 14 days of validity, which covers most one- and two-week trips. The shorter the bar, the less you pay for each GB. A United States plan costs the same wherever you use it in the country, so these prices apply to Miami too.

Miami eSIM Plans: The Key Figures

Any plan you buy for Miami covers the rest of Florida and every other state, from Orlando's parks to a Key West road trip. What it does not cover is the ocean: once a ship leaves PortMiami, a US eSIM sleeps until the next port.

Networks in Miami: Why Full Bars Do Not Mean Fast Data

Travel eSIMs do not own towers. They rent space on T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon, the three carriers left standing after UScellular folded into T-Mobile in August 2025. In Miami that arrangement has a visible cost: roaming traffic is served after the host carrier's own customers, and in a tourist city where cells are busy from Brickell to South Beach, that is why reviewers see full bars and slow pages.

On paper the networks are fast. Opensignal's July 2026 report clocked T-Mobile at 192.5 Mbps for download speed, AT&T (96.0 Mbps) and Verizon (89.4 Mbps), with Verizon winning the coverage award and AT&T posting 99.6% time on network. All three national networks cover Miami-Dade with 5G, so a blank map is not the issue. Reviews point to speed and consistency. GigSky users described no signal in many parts of Miami and hours without communication. A Ubigi customer (T-Mobile only) had excellent signal in New York but very slow, weak data in Miami. A Saily user sat on slow LTE and lost the network repeatedly. Nomad and Global YO reviewers reported speeds too low for normal use in South Florida. Holafly (AT&T and T-Mobile) is the exception, with nine positive Miami reports and one activation hiccup.

Miami also hosted FIFA World Cup matches in summer 2026, and Verizon installed private 5G at tournament venues. Reviewers at matches and fan zones reported no congestion problems.

Before booking a rental in the Everglades or a Keys motel, look the address up on the FCC's National Broadband Map or T-Mobile's coverage map. Its US plan uses T-Mobile and Verizon and also covers Puerto Rico, which matters if your cruise from PortMiami stops in San Juan, since the same eSIM keeps working there. GigSky scored 7.17 in our test, with support at 9/10 and the app at 6/10, and its US list includes Verizon, T-Mobile, Alaska's GCI and the regional Viaero. It is also the only provider here selling cruise and inflight plans, which is exactly why Miami reviewers wrote about it. Six passengers who bought cruise and land plans for Bahamas, Caribbean and Cancun sailings from PortMiami reported the connection failing at sea, working only in port, or working only near a window.

Global YO is the price leader in our comparison tool most weeks, with a 10/10 price score and 9/10 for installation in our test, for an overall 8.00. The catch for Miami is the single network: Global YO names AT&T alone and lists 4G/LTE, and one South Florida reviewer found data very slow. Unlimited plans allow only 1 GB a day at full speed.

Jetpac, Ubigi, Roamless and Others in Miami

WhatsApp, Uber and Google Maps keep working after your data runs out, and a flight delay over an hour unlocks lounge access, useful on a Miami departure board in hurricane season. Ubigi (T-Mobile only, 7-day unlimited for $25 with a 25 GB cap) and Roamless (Verizon and AT&T, a US number via Roamless Numbers, 43 of 47 positive reports) both drew Miami reviews: Ubigi weak in the city, Roamless brilliant on a Pacific cruise. GoMoWorld (8.17) won our speed test outright but its US record is thin at 32 of 46 positive. ByteSIM (5.33) runs on T-Mobile and Verizon and sells plans with a US number; reviewers praise its WhatsApp support while our own test scored support 2/10. Prices in the tables below come live from our database and are sorted from cheapest up, so a plan that looks expensive in the text may already have dropped. Everything listed works in Miami, on the drive to Key West and across the United States. Cruise passengers should buy for the land days only.

2 GB is enough for two pre-cruise nights: a ride from the airport, dinner in Brickell and the walk to the terminal.

5 GB covers a beach week in Miami with maps, Uber, restaurant searches and photos, using hotel Wi-Fi for streaming.

10 GB adds a rental-car week: the Everglades, a day in Fort Lauderdale and the long drive down to Key West.

20 GB suits a two-week stay, a hotspot for a laptop, or one plan shared between two phones.

Unlimited plans fit a South Beach week of streaming, and Holafly has the best Miami reviews among them.

Read the unlimited tables with the daily allowance in mind. Global YO slows after 1 GB a day, eSIM4Travel and Jetpac after 3 GB, Saily after 5 GB, and the slow lane is 1 Mbps or less until midnight. Given how many Miami reviewers already complained about speed on full-speed plans, throttled speed here is painful. A 10 GB fixed plan is cheaper than most unlimited options and never slows.

Data Needs for Miami: Beach Days, Cruise Days and Everglades Trips

A Miami day is heavy on maps and ride-hailing, because the city is spread out and Uber is the default way to get from Brickell to South Beach or Wynwood. Add translation apps in Little Havana, photo uploads from the beach and a music stream on the causeway, and you reach 0.8 GB to 1 GB a day. A week needs 5 GB to 7 GB.

Two Miami-specific factors push usage up. Slow speeds tempt you to reload pages and switch apps, which burns data. And if you spend days by a hotel pool, you will stream more than in a walking city. Beach hotels charge for Wi-Fi less often than they used to, so check before you rely on it. Cruise passengers need almost nothing on land days and cannot use the eSIM at sea, so a 3 GB to 5 GB plan covers the pre- and post-cruise nights.

Airport SIM Kiosks vs a Travel eSIM in Miami

Miami International has SIM kiosks in the arrivals hall, and one reviewer in our set called them a scam after paying far above carrier prices. The carrier route is fairer. T-Mobile's Prepaid US Pass eSIM (May 2026) costs $25 (7 days), $30 (10 days) or $35 (14 days), plus Florida's 7% sales tax, with unlimited calls and texts across the US, Canada and Mexico and unlimited 5G data, 50 GB of it at priority speed. Visible, on Verizon's network, sells a Travel Pass priced at $25 (7 days) and $45 (30 days).

A Saily customer unhappy with slow speeds took this route with a $25 AT&T prepaid plan, and it worked, but it cost a store visit and tax.

Our rule for Miami: under 5 GB a week, the travel eSIM wins outright, because 1 GB at eSIM4Travel costs $2.30. For a cruise, where you only need land days, that gap is enormous. Above 10 GB, or if you need a US number for restaurant texts and cruise-line messages, the pass competes with unlimited plans from Holafly, GigSky and Jetpac. Free Data Options Before You Pay in Miami

For a short cruise stopover you may not need to pay for data at all. Roamless hands first-time buyers 500 MB at no charge, runs on Verizon and AT&T, and one reviewer called it brilliant on a three-week Pacific cruise. Its US outcome record stands at 43 positive reports out of 47.

Miami Traveler Reports: 32 Reviews Sorted

Thirty-two reviews in our set name Miami, PortMiami, the Everglades or the Keys. Cruise passengers are over-represented, which is useful, because their experiences are the ones no provider website describes.

Holafly is the Miami standout. Nine reviewers reported reliable data across Miami and South Florida, including hotspot use on a Samsung, a World Cup visit and a five-day beach trip with heavy photo sharing. One traveler could not activate at the airport on arrival and had to wait for support the next morning. Another compared it favourably with a $77 airport SIM that stopped working after two days.

GigSky reviews from Miami are the most negative in our set. Two land-based travelers had no signal in many areas or found Miami particularly bad. Six cruise passengers who bought cruise and land plans for Bahamas, Caribbean and Cancun sailings from PortMiami reported the connection failing at sea, working only in ports, or working only near windows. GigSky refunded several of them, and one reviewer praised the quick refund.

Installing Your eSIM Before Miami International

Install everything at home on Wi-Fi, especially before a cruise. Every provider here lets you load the profile now and activate on arrival, and a Holafly customer who waited until Miami airport spent the night without data before support answered in the morning.

Arriving in Miami: MIA has free Wi-Fi, which you may need. A Holafly reviewer could not activate on arrival and needed support the following morning, so give yourself a fallback. Ignore the SIM kiosks in the terminal. One UK traveler paid $77 for an airport SIM that died after two days and called it a scam.
