Chicago: The Underrated City Where a Cheap eSIM Beats a Local SIM

Chicago is the great American city that visitors underrate. The architecture river cruise, the Art Institute, Millennium Park, a Cubs game at Wrigley, deep-dish debates and the lakefront trail fill a week easily. You will ride the L, walk the Loop under skyscrapers and order a lot of cars in winter, and every one of those needs data.

Chicago has one practical quirk for connectivity shopping. Combined sales tax in the city exceeds 10%, so a prepaid SIM or T-Mobile's visitor pass costs noticeably more at the register than the advertised price. A travel eSIM bought at home for a few dollars sidesteps that entirely. It also means you skip the phone stores and are online at O'Hare.

Which eSIM Providers Are Cheapest in the US?

Providers sell different amounts of data at different prices, so price per GB is the fairest way to compare them. Each bar below shows a provider's median price per GB for its United States plans with 1 to 10 GB of data and 6 to 14 days of validity, which covers most one- and two-week trips. The shorter the bar, the less you pay for each GB. A United States plan costs the same wherever you use it in the country, so these prices apply to Chicago too.

A low price per GB isn't the whole story. Compare it with how often each provider worked for travelers in the United States in the chart above, and check the speed caps and plan sizes in the provider sections below before you buy.

Chicago eSIM Plans by the Numbers

One US plan covers Chicago, a road trip to Milwaukee or Detroit, and every other state, with Alaska the sole exception on some providers. What it does not cover is the drive across the border to Toronto, where a US eSIM stops.

Networks in the Loop, on the L and Out to Milwaukee

Travel eSIMs do not own towers; they roam on T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon, the three US carriers left after UScellular joined T-Mobile in August 2025. Chicago is flat and dense, so all three blanket the city with 5G, and the choice of network matters less here than in New York or San Francisco. What matters is having a second carrier to switch to when a skyscraper canyon or a packed Cubs crowd slows the first.

In Opensignal's July 2026 report T-Mobile led download speed at 192.5 Mbps, with AT&T's 96.0 Mbps and Verizon's 89.4 Mbps. Verizon won the coverage award and AT&T posted the highest time on network at 99.6%. Chicago is flat and dense, and all three networks blanket the city with 5G. T-Mobile leads on speed, Verizon and AT&T are close behind on coverage. The Loop's skyscrapers create the usual urban effect: strong outdoors, weaker deep inside buildings and in the pedway. A GigSky reviewer reported a 45 to 60 minute stretch with no cell signal in downtown Chicago. A Ubigi customer lost coverage twice in five days, once for 20 minutes and once for four hours. Both otherwise called their experience decent.

The L is easier than the New York subway. Most of the system runs above street level, so coverage is continuous, and the underground Red and Blue Line sections in the Loop have had cellular service for years. Nomad, Global YO and Jetpac reviewers report good connections across the city, and a Global YO user had 5G throughout Chicago, DC, Vegas and New York. A GoMoWorld customer is the outlier: their eSIM did not work at all in Chicago and only came alive on hotel Wi-Fi.

Check a Wicker Park rental or a lakefront hotel on the FCC coverage map or the T-Mobile map. Both are carrier models at 5 Mbps for outdoor phones that stay put, so the pedway and the lower floors of a Loop tower can be weaker than the map shows. Every Holafly US plan is unlimited, priced between $11.90 (3 days) and $73.90 (30 days), on AT&T and T-Mobile, and Chicago split its reviewers. One enjoyed uninterrupted service for a Chicago trip at a good deal less than their UK carrier charged, another had a good connection and acceptable speed around Illinois, and a fourth used leftover data from an Iceland plan in Chicago. A third could not refresh email downtown and was offered a 10% refund. Nationwide 273 of 314 reviews were positive.

Jetpac had the cleanest Chicago week in our review set. One traveler kept their phone connected for about $5 with clear instructions and not a single problem, and another used it flawlessly for six weeks from Los Angeles to New York with Chicago in between. GigSky's US network list is the broadest here: Verizon, T-Mobile, GCI in Alaska and the regional Viaero. Our test scored it 7.17, with strong support (9/10) and a weaker app (6/10). Chicago produced a mixed report: a reviewer on a free Visa-benefit plan had decent 4G between Chicago and Milwaukee at around 1.5 Mbps, then a 45 to 60 minute stretch with no signal downtown. That is consistent with a busy Loop cell rather than a GigSky fault, but it is worth knowing.

Global YO gave one traveler 5G throughout Chicago, Washington, Las Vegas and New York at prices they called good, and price is its strength: 10/10 in our test, 8.00 overall, with 9/10 for installation and 5/10 for support. AT&T is its sole US network and the spec sheet says 4G/LTE, so the Chicago 5G report is a bonus. Unlimited plans allow 1 GB a day at full speed.

Thirty-day plans begin at $12.99 for 5 GB, the unlimited plan allows 3 GB a day, and WhatsApp, Uber and Google Maps stay usable after your data is gone. GoMoWorld (8.17) won our speed test but one Chicago customer's eSIM never worked in the city and only came alive on hotel Wi-Fi. Ubigi, T-Mobile only, with a $25 weekly unlimited plan limited to 25 GB, lost coverage twice in five Chicago days and locked one user out of its app. ByteSIM (5.33) sells plans with a US number, Yesim (6.17) runs frequent sales backed by poor support, and Roamless (Verizon and AT&T, 43 of 47 positive) is worth a look. Every unlimited plan in the table slows to 1 Mbps or less until midnight once you pass its daily allowance, from 1 GB with Global YO through 5 GB with Saily. A Jetpac reviewer got through a full Chicago week for about $5 on a small fixed plan, which tells you how little the average visitor needs here. For most trips a 5 GB or 10 GB fixed plan is cheaper and never throttles.

Data Needs for a Chicago Week, Winter or Summer

Chicago is a walking and transit city with a lot of indoor time in winter, so data use is moderate. Maps, the Ventra app for the L, ride-hailing, museum and game tickets, restaurant searches and a steady flow of skyline photos add up to about 0.7 GB a day. A week fits in 5 GB, and 10 GB leaves room for a Milwaukee or Detroit road trip with live maps.

Hotel Wi-Fi in Chicago is almost always free and fast, so stream there. The main reason to go bigger is a business trip with video calls or a laptop on hotspot. In that case take 20 GB or an unlimited plan with a 3 GB to 5 GB daily allowance. A Jetpac reviewer got through a full week in Chicago for about $5, which shows how far a small plan goes here if you use Wi-Fi in the evenings.

Why Chicago's Sales Tax Makes a Local SIM a Poor Deal

Chicago is the city where the local-SIM maths is worst for visitors. T-Mobile's Prepaid US Pass eSIM, launched in May 2026, lists at $25 (7 days), $30 (10 days) or $35 (14 days), but Chicago's combined sales tax runs above 10%, one of the highest in the country, so the 7-day pass rings up at nearer $28. The pass bundles unlimited calls and texts across the US, Canada and Mexico with unlimited 5G data, 50 GB of it at priority speed, and at least 14 GB of hotspot. Visible, on Verizon, sells a Travel Pass priced at $25 (7 days) and $45 (30 days), taxed the same way.

A Saily customer elsewhere who switched to a $25 AT&T prepaid plan found it worked, but it cost a store visit and tax.

Our rule for Chicago: under 5 GB a week the travel eSIM wins easily, with eSIM4Travel selling 1 GB for $2.30 against $28 for the taxed pass. Above 10 GB, or if you need a US number for restaurant waitlists and Ventra account texts, the pass competes with unlimited plans from Holafly, GigSky and Jetpac. Getting Online Free at O'Hare and Midway

If all you need at O'Hare is the Blue Line timetable and a message home, you may not need to pay. Roamless hands new customers 500 MB at no charge with a first purchase. It roams on Verizon and AT&T, and US reviewers reported it working in 43 of 47 cases.

Chicago Traveler Reports by Provider

Chicago reviews are fewer than New York's but more cheerful. We pulled every review naming Chicago, the Loop, O'Hare, Midway or Illinois and grouped them by provider.

Jetpac had the cleanest Chicago week in our set. One traveler kept their phone connected for about $5 a week with clear instructions and not a single issue. Another used it flawlessly for six weeks from Los Angeles to New York with Chicago in between. Global YO gave one traveler 5G throughout Vegas, Chicago, DC and New York at prices they called good.

Holafly split three ways. One reviewer enjoyed uninterrupted service for a Chicago trip at a good deal less than their UK provider charged. Another had a good connection and acceptable speed around Illinois. A third could not refresh email in downtown Chicago and was offered a 10% refund. A fourth used leftover data from an Iceland plan in Chicago, which they found handy.

eSIM Installation Before O'Hare

Do the installation at home on Wi-Fi, especially for a winter trip. Every provider here lets you install now and activate on arrival, and troubleshooting with cold hands and a dying battery outside O'Hare is nobody's idea of a holiday.

1. Check the phone. It needs eSIM hardware and a carrier unlock; a locked phone is the commonest reason an eSIM fails. Our eSIM phone list covers every handset. One trap: iPhones from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau usually have no eSIM at all.
2. Install over Wi-Fi. Either scan the emailed QR code or let the app do the install; our iPhone guide and Samsung guide show every menu. A plain activation code can be converted to a QR code.
3. Do not delete the profile. Holafly, Global YO, eSIM4Travel and Yesim allow a single installation. By contrast, Saily, Nomad, GigSky, Roamless and Ubigi let you reinstall after a delete.
4. At O'Hare or Midway: switch the eSIM line on, enable Data Roaming for it, set it as the mobile data line and turn your home SIM's data off. Give it a few minutes in the busy terminal, then toggle airplane mode and pick the network manually if needed.

Arriving at O'Hare: the airport has free Wi-Fi, and the Blue Line runs from Terminal 2 into the Loop in about 45 minutes with coverage most of the way. Midway connects to the Orange Line. Reviewers did not report airport-specific activation problems in Chicago, but the downtown outages mentioned above suggest giving the eSIM a few minutes before you assume it has failed. In winter, install and test everything before you step outside, because cold hands and a dying battery make troubleshooting miserable.
