For most trips to Germany, from a long weekend to a month, Maya Mobile is our pick: one unlimited plan that covers Germany and every neighbour, the best record of any provider here, and no speed cap from the start in our test. It worked well for 77 of 80 travelers who reported from Germany (96%), strong evidence and the largest sample on this page. The successes describe arrival in Berlin with mostly 5G (Sep 2024), a 10-day train loop from Munich through Czechia and Austria on four phones (Jul 2025), good data in Hamburg, Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Dresden and Bavaria, and border crossings into Switzerland, Austria and France where the phone sometimes needed ten minutes to find a tower. One reviewer who lives in Germany uses it as his everyday plan.

The three misses and the near-misses share two causes. The first is a Samsung phone that would not connect until the APN was entered by hand, and then dropped again on reaching Amsterdam (Jun 2024). The second is network selection on entry: one reviewer's phone defaulted to Deutsche Telekom when he drove into Germany and refused to connect until he chose O2 by hand (Mar 2025). Two reviewers with low ratings described dead spots outside city centres in Germany and France (Sep 2024, Oct 2025), and one Germany-only package showed no signal in a place the reviewer knew had coverage (Sep 2024). The pattern is clear: a wrong setting or a wrong network, not a dead network.

Maya Mobile sells nothing but a global unlimited plan: 3, 7, 14 or 30 days, 5 GB a day at full speed and then slowed, hotspot allowed, top-ups allowed, plus a Global + Cruise variant. In our test in Czechia the slowdown only started after about 5.5 GB in a day, the fairest unlimited rule we tested, and the Maya Mobile review shows the purchase and the 5G speeds. The network in Germany is reported by a third party as O2 only; Maya's own page did not name it when we checked in August 2026. On price it is the cheapest global unlimited in our comparison, but it sells no small plan and nothing under 3 days, so a 1 GB weekend is cheaper elsewhere. The drawbacks: data only, the APN "globaldata" has to be set by hand, and our support test reached a human only after a five-step form. For travelers who want unlimited data and never want to think about it, Holafly has the best record in Germany together with Maya Mobile, but in our test its speed was capped from the start. That means maps, messaging, browsing and streaming work, while large downloads, uploads, cloud backups and laptop work over the hotspot are slow, and the hotspot is limited to 1 GB a day with no top-ups (you buy a new eSIM). It worked well for 24 of 25 travelers who reported from Germany (96%), strong evidence. The successes are road trips: the Black Forest and Switzerland for a family of three (Jun 2026), a car trip through France, Italy, Austria and Germany with signal the whole time (Aug 2026), a weekend in Dusseldorf with data 99% of the time (Jul 2026), map use in Hamburg, Hannover, and landing or transiting in Frankfurt.

The one miss was a solo traveler who had no connection at all on three Holafly eSIMs in Egypt, Germany and Switzerland and bought local data instead (Jul 2026). Two lower-rated reports stop short of failure: a five-week user found the signal in Spain poor and in France and Germany better but not enough to stream, with the hotspot stopping for two days (Jul 2026), and another had to restart the phone to pick up a new carrier when crossing into the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland (Jul 2026). One install hiccup was fixed by the in-app chat (Aug 2026).

Holafly's Germany page names Vodafone Germany and Telefónica Germany as its networks [13]; third-party guides that claim Telekom are contradicted by that page. In our comparison tool Holafly sells Germany unlimited plans only, 3 to 30 days, with a 1 GB monthly benefit that stays on the eSIM after the plan ends. Installation is one tap with no QR code, but the eSIM cannot be reinstalled once deleted. On price it is among the most expensive unlimited offers in our comparison, and a hotspot-heavy or laptop trip should look at Maya Mobile instead; the speed finding is in our Holafly review. For city trips and multi-country rail or road trips, and for Munich in particular, Nomad is a safe pick with one caveat: its misses were rural. It worked well for 57 of 62 travelers who reported from Germany (92%), strong evidence, and for all three who reported from Munich. The successes include a 12-day motorcycle loop starting and ending in Munich through Liechtenstein, Switzerland, France, Italy and Austria (Jun 2026), data working the moment the plane touched down in Frankfurt (Jul 2026), Hamburg to Flensburg and on to Denmark (Jul 2026), automatic network switching while driving from Austria into Germany (Jun 2026), a family reunion coordinated across several German cities, and mobile payments and transport apps in Germany without a hitch.

The five misses are mostly outside cities. One stay in Bavaria had no usable signal at all (Aug 2026). From Mainz to Breisach the eSIM connected only for minutes at a time, so a 10-day plan gave five days of internet (Jun 2026). One traveler through rural Germany found coverage so patchy that they bought a local SIM (Jul 2026). One phone picked a network with only EDGE, so nothing loaded (Jul 2026), and one reviewer in Germany saw pages rarely load at all (Jul 2026). In cities the complaints were different: unstable data in Berlin (Aug 2026) and a lost signal in Berlin that a reboot fixed (May 2026), patchy spots in parts of Munich (Jul 2026), a hotspot that would not work (Jul 2026), and an Italy plan that did not cover Germany (Aug 2026). If you cross borders, the Europe plan is the one to buy.

Nomad's Germany page names O2 and Vodafone as its networks [12], and our comparison tool lists O2 for most of its Germany plans. The plans: Germany plans from 1 GB to 50 GB over 3 to 30 days, unlimited for 3 to 10 days at 2 GB a day and then slowed, Europe and Global plans, and add-on data. The activation window is stated as 30 days on the plan terms in our tool and 60 days on Nomad's Germany page as of August 2026. On price it sits around the market average in Germany. The drawback is the help desk: in our test the bot looped and had no route to a human, though an email reply came ten minutes later; the Nomad review has the screenshots. One reviewer wrote on 18 Jun 2026: "I was able to use my phone to make mobile payments and use public transport apps in Germany without any issues." Plans at Nomad.

For travelers who want to buy more data the moment it runs out, without hunting for Wi-Fi, GigSky is the pick: in our test its app stayed online at zero balance, and only Ubigi matched that. It worked well for 20 of 22 travelers who reported from Germany (91%), strong evidence. The successes describe two weeks across Germany and Austria on an iPhone 15 without a problem (Aug 2026), Paris, Germany, Austria and Prague on one plan (Aug 2026), 5G in most of Germany (Jul 2026), stable data in Berlin (Apr 2026), a Munich stopover on the free Visa plan (Apr 2026), and a Norway cruise with Germany on the way.

The two misses were a traveler dropped at Munich airport who never got a signal back and switched to Airalo (May 2026), and a three-week trip through five countries including Germany at speeds the reviewer put at 2G to 3G level (Dec 2025). The hiccups point the same way: no service during a transfer at Frankfurt airport (May 2026), airplane mode toggled on and off to reconnect when moving around (Jul 2026), connection problems on every move between cities across Spain, Italy and Germany (Dec 2025), and a couple whose phones connected about 60% of the time on a six-country trip (Dec 2025). GigSky does well once connected and less well at reconnecting.

GigSky does not name its German network on its page, checked in August 2026, and its own Germany page states the unlimited threshold as 2.5 GB a day in one place and 3.5 GB a day in another [16]. The plan ladder is the same as everywhere: Germany plans of 1 GB for 7 days, 3 GB for 15 days, 5 and 10 GB for 30 days, 20 GB for 90 days, 50 GB for 180 days and a 1-day unlimited pass, plus Europe and cruise plans that cover Germany. You must install the app to buy, the APN is "gigsky", and a human answered our support chat at once. On price it is at the market average in Germany and cheap on the 1 GB entry plan and the day pass, but 2 to 7 times the market in many countries outside Europe, so its global plans are not the bargain they look; see the GigSky review. For price-driven travelers who set the eSIM up at home and will not need the help desk, Global YO is the second cheapest provider in Germany in our comparison with a record that holds up. It worked well for 21 of 25 travelers who reported from Germany (84%), strong evidence. The successes describe a Europe package that worked all the time in Frankfurt while only half the time in Paris (May 2026), a Europe pack that worked properly only in Germany out of four countries (Feb 2026), backpacking through Germany, Hungary and Croatia on one eSIM (Feb 2025), remote work from a Berlin cafe (Aug 2024), and a Poland-and-Germany trip on the Europe bundle (Jul 2024).

The four misses are about installation and the daily cap, not dead zones. One eSIM did not install in Germany and the follow-up by email never came (Aug 2026); another reviewer reported "a lot of problems" in Germany without detail (Jul 2026); one did not work in Munich (Mar 2025). Two reviewers found the 7-day unlimited plan unusable after the first hour or the first 1 GB of the day, with 5G still showing (Sep 2024, Aug 2024). That matches the terms in our comparison tool: the Germany day plans give 1 GB a day at full speed, even though the plan names say 3 GB a day. A Galaxy S22 Ultra could not activate at all (Jul 2024).

Global YO does not name its German network on its page, checked in August 2026, and its Germany page requires the APN "globaldata" to be entered by hand on iPhone and Android [17]. The plans: Germany plans from 1 GB for 3 days to 100 GB for 60 days, day plans for 3 to 30 days, a Europe Explorer plan for 42 countries and two global plans, no true unlimited. Purchase is app-only, the QR code arrives by email, and outgoing calls work over the app with separate credits. On price it gets cheaper as plans grow and is never the most expensive here. The drawback is the help desk: a template reply after ten minutes and more than half an hour for the follow-up in our test; the Global YO review has the details. One reviewer wrote on 9 May 2026: "It only worked 1/2 of the time while in Paris, but worked 100% of the time while in Frankfurt." Plans at Global YO.

eSIM4Travel is the cheapest provider in Germany in our comparison and the only one of the 14 whose Germany page names all three major networks, including Deutsche Telekom [10]. Only 2 travelers have reported from Germany so far, both positive, which is too few to judge: one used it in Switzerland, France, Austria, Germany, Poland, England and Ireland and found that choosing the network by hand often got him better reception (Sep 2024); the other had a relative in Germany buy a plan for him because payment from Russia failed, and it then worked (Jul 2025). We cannot say it worked well in Germany on that basis; we can say what our own test found.

In our hands-on test we bought on the website, got the QR code by email with no app, installed it and had data right away. The help desk was the best we tested: one click from the bot to a person, who solved the problem and suggested switching network. The downsides are real: there is no app, no Google Pay, and once the data runs out you cannot reach the shop without Wi-Fi. The eSIM installs on one device only, and the eSIM4Travel review shows the whole flow.

The plans in our comparison tool: Germany plans from 500 MB for a day to 50 GB for 30 days, unlimited for 3 to 30 days at 3 GB a day and then slowed, plus Best Europe 41 and Global 72 regional plans, all with tethering, a 90-day activation window and validity that starts on first connection. The Germany plan in our tool is labelled "Vodafone, O2", while the Germany page itself lists O2, Vodafone and T-Mobile as of August 2026, so ask the help desk which network your plan lands on if Telekom is the reason you buy. Ubigi has a big sample from Germany and a weaker record than the Best group, and its misses cluster in Berlin. It worked well for 40 of 48 travelers who reported from Germany (83%), strong evidence. Of the eight misses, three are Berlin: bad connectivity that forced the reviewer onto Wi-Fi (Aug 2026), almost no service in central Berlin on an unlimited plan (Aug 2026), and data that was fine in Frankfurt, Cologne, Brussels and Amsterdam but disrupted in Berlin (May 2026). The rest: little service from Frankfurt northwards on a 10 GB plan (Aug 2026), nothing at all after landing in Germany (Jul 2026), no signal in Scandinavia and parts of Germany (Jul 2026), a crossing from Austria into Germany where the SIM did not update for 24 hours (Jul 2026), a plan that did not include Germany (Jul 2026), service that kept dropping (Jun 2026), and an outage on 1 Jun 2026 that Ubigi confirmed. The successes are just as specific: excellent 5G in Berlin for another reviewer (May 2026), Munich to Salzburg, Hamburg after a 20-minute wait, the Nürburgring countryside, and Spain, Switzerland, Germany and Ireland on one plan (Aug 2026).

Ubigi's own Germany page and partner list name O2 as its only German network [14]; third-party claims that it uses Telekom are contradicted by both. Germany plans come in 3, 10, 25 and 50 GB for 1 to 30 days plus unlimited for 7, 15 or 30 days, with Europe and World plans on the same reusable eSIM. On price it is at the market average in Germany and has the cheapest 30-day unlimited at the median in our comparison. What places it here is our test: the worst support outcome of the 14, a ticket unanswered after 24 hours, and an app that is a wrapped website, as the Ubigi review shows. It is still a fair choice for a tech-savvy traveler who values buying data at zero balance. One reviewer wrote on 17 May 2026: "Strong 5G signal everywhere I've been in France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany." Plans at Ubigi.

Airalo is the biggest name in travel eSIMs and had the most misses in Germany, most of them in summer 2026. It worked well for 29 of 35 travelers who reported from Germany (83%), strong evidence. The six misses are all about no data: no 4G or 5G on a Europe unlimited plan, so the reviewer switched to another provider to reach the hotel (Aug 2026); a global eSIM that gave no data on landing (Aug 2026); "not good in Germany" on an otherwise good trip (Aug 2026); trouble connecting (Aug 2026); no internet in Cologne (Jul 2026) and in Frankfurt (Jun 2026); and one reviewer who says Airalo itself confirmed that the German network it uses is poor even in major cities (Jul 2026). Lower-rated reports add an unlimited plan that slowed after three days (Jul 2026) and nearly an hour to get on a network after crossing in from Belgium (Jul 2026). The successes are multi-country Europe trips, good signal in the Black Forest (Aug 2026), and Munich airport after a restart (Aug 2026).

Airalo's Germany product page names O2 and Vodafone as its networks [11]; the country landing page shows only "O2 +1 other". Its Hallo! Mobil Germany plans run from 1 GB to 20 GB over 7 to 30 days plus unlimited at 3 GB a day and then slowed, with Eurolink and EUconnect regional plans and Discover global plans that cover Germany. On price it is at the market average here and never the cheapest. Across all countries it had the lowest reliability of the 14 in our report analysis, which is why it sits here despite a smooth purchase, app and install in our Airalo review. It still suits a first-time user who wants the easiest app. One reviewer wrote on 7 Aug 2026: "Easy to use, upgrade Easy, good signals in Germany black forest." Plans at Airalo.

ByteSIM has no misses in Germany but too small a sample to rank it higher. It worked well for 6 of 6 travelers who reported from Germany (100%), limited evidence. The reports describe fast 5G on a Germany trip (Feb 2024), unlimited plans across Germany, Austria, Italy and Canada without an issue (Oct 2025), and good signal in Cologne, Frankfurt and Munich on a Brussels-to-Vienna trip, with the exception of high-speed rail (Feb 2023). Two of the six needed help: one got an "E" error crossing from Berlin into Czechia and reconnected with steps sent over WhatsApp (Oct 2025), and one needed customer service to activate at all (Jul 2024).

Its Germany catalogue is the largest in our comparison tool: daily plans from 500 MB to 10 GB a day, fixed plans from 1 GB to 300 GB, validities from 1 to 30 days, and a 1-day unlimited plan, with no top-ups and no regional plan. It did not name a network on its Germany page when we checked in August 2026. On price it is just below the market average in Germany for short trips and dearer for long validities. What keeps it out of the Best group is our test: a checkout that demands a postal address, an app that is a wrapped website with install errors, and no WhatsApp reply in 15 minutes, as the ByteSIM review shows. GoMoWorld has a clean but tiny record in Germany. It worked well for 3 of 3 travelers who reported from Germany (100%), limited evidence. One drove a campervan through France, the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium with the hotspot feeding a TV and digital radio without a drop (Jan 2025); one used it in Germany, Egypt and Spain (Jul 2025); the third had a very weak signal in Pirk, a village near the Czech border, but stayed connected (Feb 2026).

Its Germany plans are 5 GB for 7 days and 15, 50 or 75 GB for 30 days, plus a Europe plan from 2.5 GB to 35 GB, with no unlimited and no calls. It did not name a network on its page when we checked in August 2026. On price it is the third cheapest in Germany in our comparison and best value at 5 GB and above. The reasons it sits here: the eSIM comes only through the app, one account serves one device, nothing happens until you press Start in the app, and the human help desk works office hours only; our GoMoWorld review also found it the fastest provider we tested, with no throttling. Roamless is the pay-as-you-go option for light users on multi-country trips, with a good but limited record in Germany. It worked well for 11 of 12 travelers who reported from Germany (92%), limited evidence. The one miss was a long-time user who got only an EDGE connection in Germany, unusable, while every other country worked (Oct 2025). The successes describe five months across Europe with data the moment a border was crossed (Oct 2025), a German subscriber whose own contract failed in Baden and Zürich and who got online with a Roamless plan instead (Oct 2025), good speeds in Berlin (Jul 2025), and six countries on one trip without a miss.

Our comparison tool lists Germany plans from 700 MB to 200 GB for 30 days, no-expiration credit plans, Europe and Global 30-day plans, and a free Germany trial eSIM, with O2 listed as the network for the Germany plans; Roamless did not name a network on its page when we checked in August 2026. There is no unlimited plan, hotspot has no cap, and calls work over the app with an optional second number. On price it is just below the market average in Germany and the second cheapest for 1 GB, but dear from 10 GB up. What places it here: in our test the preselected APN did not work and we had to pick the operator APN by hand, and a speed test only ran after a manual network switch, as the Roamless review shows. One reviewer wrote on 13 Oct 2025: "This eSim worked in every country we visited, within minutes after landing." Plans at Roamless.

Saily is the easiest eSIM to set up and had a good but thin record in Germany at a high price. It worked well for 7 of 8 travelers who reported from Germany (88%), limited evidence. The miss was an unlimited plan with very poor signal all the way from Germany to Hungary, no live-chat history, and a refund refused after the plan expired (Jul 2026). A second low-rated report describes problems from Munich, Nuremberg and Dresden through Berlin to the Baltics, with the data allowance gone far faster than expected (Jun 2026). The successes are short and clear: "it was great" in Germany compared with Airalo (Aug 2026), Tanzania, Zanzibar and Germany (Aug 2026), and Bali, Germany and Italy (May 2026).

Saily's Germany page does not name its network partner [15]. The plans: Germany 1 GB for 7 days, 3 to 20 GB for 30 days and unlimited for 15 days at 5 GB a day and then slowed, with Europe and Global plans, unlimited hotspot and a 180-day activation window. The optional phone number is a US number, not a German one. On price it is among the two most expensive providers in Germany in our comparison, which is why it is not a pick here despite the best app, install and help desk in our Saily review. Yesim has a middling record in Germany and the slowest help desk we tested apart from Ubigi. It worked well for 8 of 10 travelers who reported from Germany (80%), limited evidence; the successes include Munich and the island of Rügen. We do not have the texts of the two reports that failed, so we cannot say what went wrong for them.

Yesim sells Germany unlimited plans by the day, 1 to 30 days, with the throttle limit unpublished, plus fixed Germany plans from 500 MB to 30 GB and Europe and Global bundles. It did not name a network on its page when we checked in August 2026. On price its fixed plans are among the two most expensive in Germany in our comparison, while its unlimited plans are at market. Two findings from our Yesim review place it here: our plan started counting at purchase, not on first use, so buy close to departure or use the activate-later option, and support replies took 15 to 60 minutes each. It suits experienced users who want flexible day-by-day unlimited. Plans at Yesim.

Jetpac has the lowest share of working reports of any provider on this page. It worked well for 10 of 15 travelers who reported from Germany (67%), limited evidence. The five misses: an eSIM that never came on in Germany or Italy, with restart-the-phone advice as the only help (Aug 2026); a connection that dropped in and out across Europe for a month, with a four-hour wait when it went down in Germany (Dec 2025); an eSIM that did not work on arrival in Germany and was refunded (Nov 2024); no network at all in Germany and Liechtenstein (Aug 2024); and patchy service in Germany, fixed by instructions from the help desk (Dec 2025). Two more reviewers could not use it because their phones blocked eSIMs and were refunded. The successes describe data working the moment a family of four landed in Germany (Jan 2026), a month across Croatia, Austria, Slovenia, Czechia and Germany during Euro 2024, and Switzerland, Austria and Germany out of the box (Nov 2024).

A third-party field test reports Jetpac on O2 and Vodafone in Germany; its own pages do not name the network, and our comparison tool lists E-Plus, O2 and Vodafone for its Europe plan, where E-Plus is a legacy label for the o2 network. Germany plans run from 1 GB to 40 GB and unlimited for 3 to 30 days on 5G, while two of its Europe unlimited plans are 4G only; its unlimited plans give 3 GB per 24 hours at full speed and then slow. WhatsApp, Maps and Uber keep working after the data runs out on packs of 3 GB and up, and in-app voice packs are available. On price it is above the market average in Germany. The Jetpac review found a rough app and slow site; it suits frequent flyers who value the free lounge on a delayed flight. One reviewer wrote on 15 Jan 2026: "Jetpack eSim worked perfectly as soon as we landed in Germany." Plans at Jetpac.

Best eSIM Plans for Germany

Price per GB in Germany by eSIM Provider

How much does each provider charge per GB in Germany? The chart below compares plans of 1 to 10 GB that last 6 to 14 days, the usual range for a one- or two-week trip. Provider websites show only their own plans, so this side-by-side view is one you would otherwise have to work out yourself. A shorter bar means a lower price per GB.

Two things stand out in the Germany plan tables. First, Germany is one of the cheaper eSIM markets in our comparison: eSIM4Travel and Global YO are far below the market median here, GoMoWorld and Roamless sit just below it, and Yesim and Saily are the two most expensive. Second, the cheapest Germany-only plan is rarely the right one, because so many trips cross into Austria, Czechia or Switzerland, where a Germany plan stops working. For unlimited plans, the differences are in the fair-use rules more than the price: Maya Mobile allows 5 GB a day at full speed, Airalo, eSIM4Travel and Jetpac 3 GB, Nomad 2 GB, and Holafly publishes no number but was capped from the start in our test.

Best eSIM for Munich, Berlin, Frankfurt and Bavaria

The table lists every place named in the Germany reports, with the raw counts per provider. Only three places have enough reports for a pick of their own: Munich, Berlin and Frankfurt. Munich is the one place where a provider other than the country pick earns the spot.

Best eSIM for Munich

Nomad is the pick for Munich: it worked for all 3 travelers who reported from the city, including a 12-day motorcycle tour that started and ended there (Jun 2026) and a one-day stop on the Europe plan (May 2026), though one of the three found patchy spots in parts of the city (Jul 2026). Maya Mobile worked for both of its Munich reporters, one of them riding trains out of Munich across Czechia and Austria (Jul 2025). Ubigi worked for 3 of 4: Munich to Salzburg and Paris to Munich to Prague went well, and the one miss was a plan bought for Denmark and Sweden that did not include Germany at all (Jul 2026).

The misses of the runners-up are worth knowing. Global YO's one Munich report was "doesn't work in Munich, please refund me" (Mar 2025). Saily's one Munich report was a tour from Munich through Nuremberg, Dresden and Berlin to the Baltics that went badly from the start (Jun 2026). At the airport, GigSky disconnected one traveler at Munich airport and never came back (May 2026), while Airalo connected after the phone was switched off and on again (Aug 2026). If you are in town for Oktoberfest, o2 builds a temporary network on the Theresienwiese for the crowds [9], which favours providers on o2: Nomad, Airalo, Ubigi and Holafly all name it.

Best eSIM for Berlin

The country pick, Maya Mobile, applies in Berlin: both of its Berlin reporters had good data, one with mostly 5G from arrival (Sep 2024) and one who called the service excellent (Nov 2024). The only provider with three or more Berlin reports is Ubigi, and its record there is the weakest on the page: two travelers in August 2026 had almost no usable data in central Berlin and relied on Wi-Fi, a third found Berlin the one disrupted city on an otherwise good trip (May 2026), while two others had excellent 5G in the centre (May 2026). Ubigi runs on O2 only in Germany, so a busy cell in the centre leaves no second network to fall back on.

Nomad split in Berlin: one traveler had unstable data in Berlin and Brussels that made calls almost impossible (Aug 2026), and one lost the signal until a reboot (May 2026). The single reports that worked were GigSky (stable, Apr 2026), Global YO (remote work from a cafe, Aug 2024), Roamless (good speed, Jul 2025) and ByteSIM, whose user got an error crossing from Berlin into Czechia and fixed it with help over WhatsApp (Oct 2025). Saily's one Berlin report was the same failed Baltic tour mentioned under Munich.

Best eSIM for Frankfurt

No provider has three or more Frankfurt reports, so the country pick, Maya Mobile, applies, but the Frankfurt reports are mainly about arrivals. Holafly worked for both of its reporters, one turning it on as soon as she landed and keeping constant coverage through four countries (Jun 2026), the other transiting through Frankfurt and Brussels with data still working (Apr 2026). Nomad worked for both of its reporters on landing, one of them hotspotting a whole family during a layover (Aug 2026). Global YO worked all the time in Frankfurt for its one reporter (May 2026).

The misses are the airport and the surrounding region. GigSky gave no service during a flight transfer at Frankfurt airport and only started at Rome (May 2026). Airalo left one traveler without internet in Frankfurt after he chose the wrong package and could not fix it offline (Jun 2026), while another could not connect on arrival from Australia but got it fixed through chat (Jun 2026). Ubigi worked for 2 of 4: good signal in Frankfurt and Cologne for one, but little service from Frankfurt northwards for another (Aug 2026) and dropouts at night outside the city for a third (Jun 2026).

Local SIM Cards and Operator eSIMs in Germany

A German prepaid SIM beats a travel eSIM on two counts: it puts you on Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone or o2 by your own choice, and above roughly 10 GB it is cheaper per GB. It loses on friction. Since 1 July 2017, §172 TKG requires identity verification before any prepaid SIM is activated, paid or free; a passport or national ID card in the original is accepted, a driving licence is not, and the check runs in a shop, at a Deutsche Post branch (PostIdent) or by video call (VideoIdent) [3]. Expect 15 to 30 minutes including the video check. Travel eSIMs bought online are outside this rule because they are provisioned as inbound roaming: email and a payment method are all you need.

The operator prepaid offers, all with 5G at no surcharge and all billed per four weeks, so 13 periods a year, not 12 (as of September 2026):

• Deutsche Telekom MagentaMobil Prepaid: M 20 GB for €9.95, L 40 GB for €14.95, XL 80 GB for €19.95, each per 28 days with unused data rolling into the next period on L and XL; Max unlimited for €99.95 per 4 weeks; and a 5G Jahrestarif at €99.95 a year for 12 blocks of 20 GB, selectable as an eSIM. The allowances were raised on 25 Feb 2026 at unchanged prices.
• Vodafone CallYa Allnet Flat: S 25 GB for €9.99, M 50 GB for €14.99, L 100 GB for €19.99, Black unlimited for €79.99, each per 4 weeks, with calls and SMS included and EU roaming. Customers who booked between 27 May and 8 Jul 2026 keep an extra 15 GB on each tier. Older guides still show a 60 GB L tier; that tier is gone.
• o2 Prepaid: six tariffs with eSIM, up to a 999 GB allowance on the top tier; the base tariff charges a daily fee for data unless you add a data option.

The discounters are the cheapest realistic option for a tourist. Aldi Talk runs on the o2 network: Tarif S gives 25 GB for €9.99 per 4 weeks and the starter set costs €9.99 with €10 of credit (as of June 2026), but the tariff is speed-capped below what the network can do, and its eSIM is only available as a swap after a physical SIM has been activated, first swap free, further eSIMs €9.99, which is why some guides say Aldi has no eSIM. Lidl Connect runs on Vodafone and has sold eSIMs since 2024, with starter kits promoted in-store. Congstar runs on Telekom, with 5G as a paid extra. Ay Yildiz sells no eSIM at all. All advertised prices include 19% VAT, with no activation tax on top.

Where to buy: Aldi and Lidl checkouts, Edeka, Rewe and Kaufland, Rossmann and dm, Media Markt and Saturn, the Telekom, Vodafone and o2 shops, kiosks, petrol stations and the late-night Spätis in Berlin. We could not confirm whether SIMs are sold at German airports or at what price: one 2026 guide reports a tourist SIM at two to four times the city price at Frankfurt and Munich, another says airports sell none, so plan to buy in town or install a travel eSIM before you fly. The rule of thumb from the research: under about 5 GB and 10 days, a travel eSIM wins outright; above roughly 10 GB, Telekom prepaid wins on price per GB and on network; for unlimited, Holafly wins on a trip of a week, and Telekom L or XL wins beyond about two weeks.

Mobile Networks in Germany

Deutsche Telekom is the best network in Germany, and almost no travel eSIM uses it. Germany has four licensed operators: Telekom, Vodafone, Telefónica under the o2 brand, and 1&1, which runs its own network in cities and roams on Vodafone elsewhere and is not sold to tourists. 3G is gone on all four since 2021, and 2G is scheduled to go in 2028, with Telekom's shutdown dated 30 June 2028. The regulator's monitoring puts 5G from at least one operator on about 95% of the land area and 4G or 5G on about 98%, with Telekom at about 87% 5G land coverage, Telefónica at 76% and Vodafone at 75% [1]. Telekom says its 5G reaches 97% of households and its 4G 99% [5]. The regulator's map shows all four networks on a 100 m grid and flags cells where no build is planned within a year [2].

The independent tests agree on the order. According to the connect network test published in November 2025, Telekom won every discipline for the 15th year running, with Vodafone and o2 tied for second and o2 the one that gained the most. According to Opensignal's November 2025 report, Telekom won 11 of 14 awards including download, upload, availability and reliability, led download in all five regions of the country, while o2 took the overall coverage award by a hair and Vodafone was strongest relative to Telekom in the north-east. Telekom's edge is largest in small towns, on connecting roads and on Deutsche Bahn; Vodafone is the weakest of the three on trains according to connect. The regulator and the trade press name rural Brandenburg, parts of the Eifel, and Alpine trails and summits as the remaining gaps, with ski villages and valley roads generally on 4G. Operators set their own coverage maps at Telekom [6] and Vodafone [7]. A rural-coverage obligation of a minimum data rate on 99.5% of the land area applies from 2030 under the spectrum extension the regulator granted in March 2025 [4].

Trains are the weak spot for every provider, not just one. Signal has to pass metal-coated carriage windows; Deutsche Bahn is laser-etching existing windows and Telekom reports high-speed coverage along 99% of the 7,800 km of main lines [8]. Which provider rides which network, as of August 2026: eSIM4Travel names O2, Vodafone and T-Mobile (Telekom) on its Germany page [10]; Airalo names O2 and Vodafone [11]; Nomad names O2 and Vodafone [12]; Holafly names Vodafone and Telefónica [13]; Ubigi names O2 only [14]. Jetpac is reported on O2 and Vodafone and Maya Mobile on O2 only, by third parties. Saily [15], GigSky [16], Global YO [17], Yesim, GoMoWorld, ByteSIM and Roamless did not name a network on their pages. Third-party claims that Holafly or Ubigi use Telekom are contradicted by those providers' own pages. For a trip of cities and main lines any of these will do; for a trip of villages, trains and Alpine trails, the choice is eSIM4Travel or a German prepaid SIM on Telekom. How to Set Up an eSIM for Germany

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, before you fly: in our tests almost every plan starts counting on first connection in Germany, not at install. The exceptions matter. Yesim's plan started counting at purchase in our test, so buy it close to departure or use its activate-later option; GoMoWorld does nothing until you press Start or schedule a start in the app; and some Airalo packages start at install, so check the package page. The activation windows are generous: 90 days at eSIM4Travel, 180 days at Saily, 6 months for an unscanned Ubigi QR code, 3 months for an unactivated Jetpac pack, and 30 or 60 days at Nomad depending on the page, after which the plan starts on its own.

1. Check your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. iPhones sold in mainland China, some Samsung Galaxy S20 and S21 US models and Hong Kong Samsungs are excluded by most providers; our list of phones with eSIM support has the detail.
2. Buy the plan and get the profile. eSIM4Travel, Airalo, Maya Mobile, Ubigi, Yesim, ByteSIM, Jetpac, Nomad and Holafly send a QR code by email; GoMoWorld, Saily, Roamless and GigSky install only through their apps, and Global YO needs the app to buy. 3. Install at home, but keep the eSIM line switched off until you land if the plan starts on first connection; GigSky's cannot be paused once it connects.
4. On landing, turn the eSIM line on, enable data roaming for it, and set it as the data line. Some providers need an APN typed by hand: "globaldata" for Global YO and Maya Mobile, "gigsky" for GigSky, and "mobiledata" for Ubigi; Roamless's preselected APN did not work in our test until we chose the operator's own.
5. If data does not start, toggle airplane mode or restart the phone; several Germany reports from GigSky, Airalo and Holafly were fixed that way. If it still fails, choose the network by hand in the phone settings; one Maya Mobile user was stuck on Deutsche Telekom until he selected O2. Our eSIM troubleshooting guide walks through the rest.
6. Do not delete the eSIM profile until the trip is over: Holafly, eSIM4Travel and Global YO profiles cannot be reinstalled once removed.

Calls and SMS in Germany

Germany's calling code is +49, and none of the Germany plans in our comparison tool include minutes or a German number as of October 2026; they are data-only, so calls go over WhatsApp, FaceTime or a similar app. The nearest things to voice: Airalo's Discover+ global plans, which cover Germany, come with a US number for calls and texts; Jetpac sells in-app voice packs, and in our test the person we called saw a US number; Roamless offers calls over its app and an optional second number from the US, Canada, the UK or Australia; Global YO sells outgoing app calls with separate credits; and Saily's number add-on, like its Ultra subscription, gives a US number, not a German one. Holafly's subscription and Yesim's virtual numbers receive SMS only, which is enough for verification codes.

If you need a real German number, the alternative is a prepaid SIM from Telekom, Vodafone or o2 with the ID check described above; Vodafone CallYa includes 200 or 500 minutes and texts to EU numbers depending on the tier, as of September 2026. Note that MMS is being withdrawn by Telekom, Telefónica and 1&1, so picture messages belong in an app either way.

Free eSIM Data for Germany

Four of the providers here give a little free data that works in Germany. Roamless lists a free Germany trial eSIM in our comparison tool, a 30-day trial that starts on activation and can be used anywhere Roamless works, on top of the small free credit every new account gets. GigSky's Germany page offers a free 100 MB trial with no card, 500 MB across 42 European countries [16]. Nomad gives a free 1 GB trial, and GoMoWorld a free one-day trial, both through their apps; Jetpac's free Eterna eSIM carries 100 MB. Summary: the best eSIM for Germany

Based on 353 traveler reports from Germany and our own tests, we recommend Maya Mobile for most trips: it worked well for 77 of 80 travelers who reported from here, its global unlimited plan covers every border you cross, and its only misses were a Samsung APN setting and a wrong network pick. Holafly matched that record at 24 of 25 and suits Black Forest and cross-border road trips, but in our test its speed was capped from the start and its hotspot is limited to 1 GB a day. Nomad, 57 of 62, is the pick for Munich and multi-country rail trips, with weak rural signal in Bavaria and no human help desk as its drawbacks.

GigSky, 20 of 22, is the choice if you want to buy more data at zero balance, with airport-transfer dropouts as its weakness. Global YO, 21 of 25, is the second cheapest provider here and best for anyone who installs at home and will not need the slow help desk. eSIM4Travel is the cheapest in Germany and the only provider naming Deutsche Telekom on its page, with just two reports so far, both positive, and no app. Whichever provider it is, the best eSIM for Germany is a Europe plan on a phone set up before you land, with the network picked by hand if the first one fails.
