Key takeaways
With only 15 traveler reports from Bulgaria, the evidence is limited; based on them and our tests, the best option for most trips is Ubigi: it worked well for 4 of 4 travelers who reported from Bulgaria and its page names both A1 and Vivacom, but its help desk never answered our ticket. Nomad (3 of 4) suits a Bulgaria-only trip; its one miss was a multi-country plan that dropped in Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary, and its chat has no route to a person. eSIM4Travel has no reports from Bulgaria yet; it is the cheapest in our comparison with the best help desk in our test, but no app.

The best eSIM for Bulgaria depends on where you go, because the three networks are not equal everywhere. A1, Vivacom and Yettel all publish coverage as a share of the population, not of the land. Resorts, the Black Sea coast and the motorways are well served; the interiors of the Rila, Pirin and Rhodope mountains and the high trails are where signal gets thin. A Sofia to coast drive crosses two mountain ranges in under four hours, so a provider that connects to more than one network is worth more here than in a flat country.
Two local rules matter before you decide. A prepaid data-only SIM or eSIM needs no ID registration in Bulgaria, while any prepaid product with voice minutes must be registered against a passport or EU ID card [1]. Since March 2026 Yettel has sold a prepaid data eSIM online with no ID check, which removes the main reason travel eSIMs used to beat a local SIM here. Bulgaria has used the euro since 1 January 2026, so any price a guide still quotes in leva is out of date.
Peak seasons are the coast from June to September and the ski resorts of Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo from December to March. Most international flights land at Sofia Airport Terminal 2, where carrier kiosks sit in arrivals; their opening hours and prices are reported only by third-party guides that contradict each other, so we could not confirm them. A travel eSIM installed at home works the moment you land, and that is still its strongest argument.

How well each provider's eSIM works in Bulgaria
The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in Bulgaria. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

How we got these numbers: we read 15 public customer reviews that mention Bulgaria or a place in it, published between May 2024 and August 2026, and counted a report as "worked" when the reviewer said the eSIM connected, even with small hiccups. We treat 20 or more reports as strong evidence, 3 to 19 as limited, and fewer than 3 as too few to judge. A count like 4 of 4 means the eSIM worked well for 4 of the 4 travelers who reported from here; each provider section says what went wrong for the rest. The Vefru test score is a separate number: our own hands-on test of the provider, run outside Bulgaria, so it says how the provider behaves, not how the network performs here. Local operator prices in the text were checked on 25 September 2026; provider ratings, the plan tables and the price-per-GB chart are live and update on their own.

We ranked on traveler reports from Bulgaria first, price position second and our hands-on findings third, which leaves only two providers with 3 or more reports; eSIM4Travel joins them because it is the cheapest in our comparison and had the best help desk in our test, not because of a Bulgaria record it does not yet have.

Ubigi is the travel eSIM brand of Paris operator Transatel, with one reusable eSIM for 200+ destinations. Data was fast in our test, and its 3 GB, 10 GB and 30-day unlimited plans are cheap. Its weak point is support: a chatbot that ends in an email ticket, with no live agent.

Ubigi eSIM in our hands
Based on the reports and our tests, Ubigi is the best option for most trips to Bulgaria, because it is the only provider here with a clean record and a page that names both the speed leader and the coverage leader. It worked well for 4 of 4 travelers who reported from Bulgaria, limited evidence, all from May to August 2026. The successes include a five-week, five-country trip where the reviewer praised coverage in rural areas, a Panama, Bulgaria and Germany itinerary, and two Balkan transits where Bulgaria was the part that worked.
There were no misses in Bulgaria. The two low-rated Ubigi reviews are warnings for Balkan itineraries, not for Bulgaria: one traveler on the Europe unlimited plan found it fine in Bulgaria but unusable around Corinth in Greece, and another could not connect at all in Serbia before moving on to Bulgaria and Romania. If Bulgaria is one stop on a longer Balkan trip, read our Greece guide before you rely on the same eSIM there. As one traveler put it on 25 Jul 2026: "We went to Japan, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, and Bulgaria, and Ubiji worked beautifully."
Ubigi's Bulgaria page names A1 Telekom and Vivacom, with 3G, 4G and 5G, and its unlimited plan gives 20 GB at full speed before it is slowed [8]. That combination covers the cities and motorways, where A1 leads on speed, and the mountains and villages, where Vivacom wins the coverage awards. Our comparison tool lists Bulgaria plans of 3 GB for 15 days, 10 GB for 7 or 30 days, 25 GB and 50 GB for 30 days, and unlimited for 7, 15 or 30 days, plus Europe and World plans that include Bulgaria. There is no 5 GB or 20 GB size, so a 5 GB need means buying 10 GB. It is data-only, lets you choose a home or local IP, and allows hotspot on every plan. On price it sits just below the market in our comparison, cheap for 3 GB and 10 GB and with the lowest 30-day unlimited at the median.
The drawbacks are all on the service side. In our Ubigi test the site and app were clumsy, a web purchase created no account, and our email ticket got no reply in 24 hours, the worst outcome of any provider we tested. Two things in its favour: the QR arrives by email within a minute, and the app stays reachable at zero balance, so you can buy more data without Wi-Fi. An unscanned QR stays valid for six months [8]. The APN is "mobiledata" if data does not start on its own. Buy it on the Ubigi website if you can troubleshoot yourself; if you expect to need help, Nomad has the same problem and eSIM4Travel does not.

Nomad eSIM in our hands
Nomad suits a trip that stays inside Bulgaria, because its local plan worked for every traveler who bought one while its multi-country plans caused the trouble. It worked well for 3 of 4 travelers who reported from Bulgaria (75%), limited evidence, between May and August 2026. One traveler bought a Bulgaria eSIM and a Turkey eSIM: the Bulgaria one "worked fine", the Turkey one would not install at all (11 Aug 2026). Another used Nomad in Mexico, Italy, Bulgaria and Turkey and always had a connection.
The miss was a multi-country plan whose connection dropped in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria (Jul 2026). A second regional-plan user, counted as a success here, lost all connection the moment they crossed from Bulgaria into Romania, and a restart did not fix it. Both patterns point the same way: on a Nomad regional plan, expect to reboot or reselect the network at a border, and do not count on help, because in our Nomad test the chat bot looped and never handed us to a person.
Nomad's Bulgaria page names Vivacom and Yettel as its networks, gives a 60-day window to activate, and slows unlimited plans after the daily allowance [7]. That means no access to A1, the speed leader, but it does include Vivacom, the coverage leader, and the plan rows in our comparison tool list Vivacom. The Bulgaria plans run from 1 GB for 3 or 7 days through 3, 5, 10, 20 and 50 GB for 30 days, with unlimited for 3 to 10 days at 2 GB a day. The Balkans regional plan covers Bulgaria with 11 neighbours, from 1 GB to 20 GB, and there are Europe and Global plans too. On price Nomad sits slightly below the market in our comparison, with the flattest profile across sizes. The app has a home-screen widget showing remaining data, which no other provider offered in our test. Buy it from the Nomad site if you can install at home and will not need the help desk.

eSIM4Travel eSIM in our hands
eSIM4Travel is the pick for anyone who wants the lowest price and a person to talk to when something fails, with one caveat: there are no traveler reports from Bulgaria yet, so its place here rests on our hands-on test and its price position, not on a record in the country. In our comparison it is the cheapest provider at every size up to 20 GB, and its own Bulgaria page lists the lowest per-GB prices we verified from any official page. We tested it in Switzerland, not Bulgaria: the eSIM installed from a QR code and worked right away, and the help desk was one click from the bot to a person, who solved the problem and suggested a network switch.
Its Bulgaria page names all three networks, under the old names MobilTel (now A1), Telenor (now Yettel) and Vivacom, and its unlimited plan gives 3 GB a day before it is slowed, though the page gives two different figures for how slow [9]. A plan must be activated within 90 days and starts on first connection [9]. Our comparison tool lists Bulgaria day passes of 500 MB and 1 GB, 1 GB for 7 days, 3 GB to 50 GB for 30 days, unlimited from 3 to 30 days, and Best Europe 41 and Global 72 plans that include Bulgaria. Hotspot is allowed.
The downsides are the same everywhere: no app, no Google Pay, and no way to buy more data without Wi-Fi once the allowance runs out, because the shop is a website. The QR comes by email and works on one device only. Read our eSIM4Travel review for the full test and buy on the eSIM4Travel Bulgaria page. If you are the first to report from Bulgaria, we would like to hear how it went.

Maya Mobile eSIM in our hands
Maya Mobile would be a pick for a multi-country Balkan trip if it had more reports: it worked well for 2 of 2 travelers who reported from Bulgaria, too few to judge. One used it for four months straight through France, Spain, the USA, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece and said it "worked perfectly" (30 Oct 2025); a couple used two eSIMs through Spain, Italy and Bulgaria (May 2024). No misses were reported.
Maya sells only a global unlimited plan, for 3, 7, 14 or 30 days, at 5 GB a day at full speed before it slows, with hotspot allowed; there is no Bulgaria plan and nothing under 3 days. Its page says it uses the strongest local network but names none (checked September 2026). In our Maya Mobile test the install took one click, the speed was among the highest we measured, and the daily cap was the fairest of the unlimited plans. It is the cheapest global unlimited plan in our comparison, but poor value for a two-day trip. Buy it from the Maya Mobile site if Bulgaria is one of several countries on your route.

Airalo eSIM in our hands
Airalo is a safe but unremarkable choice here: it worked well for 1 of 1 travelers who reported from Bulgaria, too few to judge. That traveler used it across Hungary, Bulgaria, Spain and Greece with no trouble, then found it failed half the time in London (Jul 2026). Airalo has the lowest overall report record of the 14 providers we track, so one good Bulgaria report is not a trend.
Its Bulgaria eSIM, sold as "Bultel", names Vivacom as the primary network plus one unnamed second network, is data-only, and Airalo tells users to select a supported network by hand in the phone settings [4]. Third-party guides say the second network is A1; we could not confirm it. Our comparison tool lists Bultel plans from 1 GB to 50 GB for 3 to 30 days, unlimited for 3 to 30 days at 3 GB a day, plus EUconnect, Eurolink and Discover regional plans; Discover+ adds calls and texts. In our Airalo test purchase and install were among the easiest, and the app is polished. On price Airalo sits at the market everywhere and is never the cheapest. The Airalo Bulgaria page suits a first-time eSIM buyer who values the app over price.

Holafly eSIM in our hands
Holafly has the best overall record of the 14 providers we track, but in our test its speed was capped from the start, and in Bulgaria it has only one report: it worked well for 1 of 1 travelers, too few to judge. Even that report began with a failure. The eSIM did not work on arrival; the help desk answered within minutes, a specialist re-sent the eSIM by email, and after a reinstall the traveler had full data for a girls' trip (26 Aug 2026). A capped speed is enough for maps, messaging, browsing and streaming, but slow for large downloads, uploads, cloud backups and laptop work.
Holafly's Bulgaria page names A1, Vivacom and "Telenor", Yettel's name until March 2022, and sells unlimited plans only, by the day, with no local number; its hotspot limit is stated as 1 GB a day on the product page but as 500 MB a day on its Bulgaria SIM-card page, so we could not confirm which applies [5]. In our Holafly test install was one tap and the human help desk was quick, but there are no top-ups, a deleted eSIM cannot be reinstalled, and its unlimited plans are among the most expensive in our comparison. Our comparison tool listed no Holafly plan for Bulgaria at export time, so there is no plan table here; the Holafly Bulgaria page shows its current offer.

Jetpac eSIM in our hands
Jetpac worked well for 1 of 1 travelers who reported from Bulgaria, too few to judge: a frequent flyer who used it in Malaysia, Japan, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey and praised the help desk when glitches came up (19 Aug 2026). No miss was reported, but one review is not a record.
Jetpac's page does not name a Bulgarian network (checked September 2026); its Europe plan rows in our comparison tool list M-Tel and Telenor, the old names of A1 and Yettel. Our comparison tool lists Bulgaria packs from 1 GB to 40 GB and unlimited from 3 to 30 days, plus Europe and Global packs. Its extras are what set it apart: WhatsApp, Maps and Uber keep working after the data runs out on packs of 3 GB and up, in-app voice packs, unlimited hotspot and free lounge access when a flight is delayed. In our Jetpac test the site was slow, the app rough and the usage counter lagged, and many of its unlimited plans are 4G only. On price it is among the dearer providers in our comparison. The Jetpac site suits frequent flyers who want the extras.

Saily eSIM in our hands
Saily's only Bulgaria report is a miss: it worked well for 0 of 1 travelers, too few to judge. A river-cruise passenger on a 30-day Europe plan had full signal bars in Bulgaria but no data until the next day, when a reboot fixed it; the same thing happened in Croatia, and the in-app chat could not be reached without data (5 Jul 2026). The traveler still planned to use Saily again. The lesson is a reboot at every border, and a plan with Serbia in it if your route goes there, because Serbia was not in that Europe plan.
Saily's Bulgaria page promises "Bulgaria's best networks" but names none, gives a 180-day activation window, and sells a US number as an add-on [6]. Our comparison tool lists 1 GB for 7 days, 3 to 20 GB for 30 days and unlimited for 15 days at 5 GB a day, plus Europe and Global plans. In our Saily test it had the most polished app and install and a help desk that answered fast, which is why it suits a first eSIM. The catch is price: it is among the most expensive in the places people travel, and the app can only be bought in, not by QR. The Saily Bulgaria page has the current plans.

GigSky eSIM in our hands
GigSky's only Bulgaria report is a miss: it worked well for 0 of 1 travelers, too few to judge. The traveler bought an unlimited plan and found that after a few hours the speed dropped until a page took minutes to load; a refund request went unanswered (13 Oct 2024). That matches the fine print: GigSky's own Bulgaria page gives the daily full-speed allowance as 2.5 GB in one place and 3.5 GB in another, and names no network, saying only that it uses the fastest available [10].
Our comparison tool lists the usual GigSky ladder for Bulgaria: 1 GB for 7 days, 3 GB for 15, 5 and 10 GB for 30, 20 GB for 90, 50 GB for 180 days and a one-day unlimited pass, plus Europe and cruise plans. In our GigSky test a human answered at once and the app stays online at zero data, so you can buy more without Wi-Fi, but you must install the app to buy and speeds felt unstable. On price it is the most expensive provider in our comparison overall, though at market in big European markets. The GigSky Bulgaria page makes most sense for a Black Sea cruise or a one-day pass.

Global YO eSIM in our hands
Global YO has no traveler reports from Bulgaria yet, so we cannot rank it, even though it is the second-cheapest provider in our comparison and gets cheaper as plans grow. Its page does not name a Bulgarian network (checked September 2026).
Our comparison tool lists Bulgaria plans of 1 GB for 3 days, 3 and 5 GB for 15 days, 10 and 20 GB for 30 days, 50 GB for 45 days and 100 GB for 60 days, Day Plans at 3 GB a day for 3 to 30 days, and Europe Explorer and Global Explorer plans. There is no unlimited plan. It is data-only with outgoing calls through its own app. In our Global YO test you must buy in the app, the eSIM is then emailed, the app dies at zero data, and the help desk took ten minutes for a template reply. A deleted eSIM cannot be reinstalled. The Global YO Bulgaria page suits a price-driven buyer who installs at home and expects no help.

GoMoWorld is the travel eSIM brand of Irish operator eir, with plans in 202 countries. Every destination has the same four euro prices, and we saw no throttling at all. The catch is that everything happens in the app, and human support works only in office hours.

GoMoWorld eSIM in our hands
GoMoWorld has no traveler reports from Bulgaria yet. Its page says it uses local roaming partner networks and names none (checked September 2026).
Our comparison tool lists four Bulgaria bundles, 4 GB for 7 days and 20, 50 or 75 GB for 30 days, with 5G, plus Europe bundles from 2.5 GB to 35 GB; there is no unlimited plan and no calls. The amounts are generous for the price, which puts GoMoWorld just below the market in our comparison for heavy data needs and poor value for a 1 GB trip. In our GoMoWorld test it was the fastest provider we measured with no throttling, but the eSIM exists only in the app, one account serves one device, you must press Start or nothing happens, and human help is office hours only. Buy it on the GoMoWorld site for heavy data in Europe.

Roamless is a US provider built around one global eSIM for 203 destinations, paid with pay-as-you-go credit. It was fast and unthrottled in our test, and travelers report it working in 91% of cases. Its weak point is buying: the website forces you into the app, and large data amounts cost more than most rivals.

Roamless eSIM in our hands
Roamless has no traveler reports from Bulgaria yet. Its page names no network, but its Bulgaria plans are listed as A1 in our comparison tool, which would put it on the speed leader if accurate.
Our comparison tool lists Bulgaria plans from 1 GB to 50 GB for 30 days, plans with no expiry from 1 GB to 200 GB, a free trial of about 700 MB for new users, and Europe and Global plans. There is no unlimited plan, no throttling is claimed, and hotspot is allowed. Roamless adds in-app calls and an optional second number. In our Roamless test the preselected APN did not work until we chose another, and the speed test only ran after a manual network switch, so it is not a first eSIM; a trickle of data stays available at zero balance to buy more. On price it is at the market in popular destinations, cheap for 1 GB and dear above 10 GB. The Roamless Bulgaria page suits a light user who visits many countries.

ByteSIM eSIM in our hands
ByteSIM has no traveler reports from Bulgaria yet. Its page title says it auto-switches across A1, Yettel and Vivacom; we did not open the page, so we treat that as unconfirmed.
Our comparison tool lists more Bulgaria plans for ByteSIM than for anyone else: daily plans from 500 MB to 10 GB a day, fixed plans from 3 GB to 50 GB at 3 to 30 days, and unlimited from 1 to 30 days, with longer validity costing more. There are no regional plans and no top-ups. In our ByteSIM test checkout demanded a phone number and full postal address, the app showed install errors, we got 4G where 5G was promised, and WhatsApp support did not reply in 15 minutes. On price it is at the market, competitive for 3 to 5 GB on short trips. The ByteSIM site suits an experienced user who wants a local payment method.

Yesim eSIM in our hands
Yesim has no traveler reports from Bulgaria yet. Its page lists ten Bulgarian cities, from Sofia and Plovdiv to Varna and Burgas, but names no network and gives no fair-use threshold (checked September 2026).
Our comparison tool lists Bulgaria unlimited plans for any length from 1 to 30 days, fixed plans of 500 MB for a day and 1 to 30 GB for 30 days, and Balkans, Europe and Global bundles. In our Yesim test our plan started at purchase rather than at first use, so buy it close to the trip, and the help desk took 15 to 60 minutes per reply. The app nags with upsells. On price its unlimited plans sit at the market and its fixed plans above it. The Yesim Bulgaria page suits an experienced user who wants an odd number of unlimited days.

Providers travelers report from Bulgaria that we have not tested
Simify has 2 reports from Bulgaria, both positive, one a 45-day unlimited plan across ten countries and one a long multi-country trip; we have not tested it and could not find a Bulgaria page for it, so we do not know which network it uses.
Best eSIM Plans for Bulgaria
Price per GB in Bulgaria by eSIM Provider
How much does each provider charge per GB in Bulgaria? The chart below compares plans of 1 to 10 GB that last 6 to 14 days, the usual range for a one- or two-week trip. Provider websites show only their own plans, so this side-by-side view is one you would otherwise have to calculate yourself. A shorter bar means a lower price per GB.
Generated 28.10.2026 22:01
The tables below group the live offers by data size. For a week on the coast with maps and messaging, 2 to 5 GB is enough; a two-week trip with streaming in the evenings needs 10 GB or more, and our guide to how much data you need gives the detail. If Bulgaria is one stop on a Balkan route, a regional plan may beat two country plans: compare plans that cover both Bulgaria and Greece, and see our guides for Turkey and Croatia. Above 10 GB, a local prepaid data eSIM is cheaper than every travel eSIM here; the local SIM section explains when that trade-off pays.

Best eSIM for Sofia, the Black Sea Coast and the Mountains
None of the 15 reports names a place inside Bulgaria, so there are no city-level picks yet; the overall pick, Ubigi, has no city-level reports either. The table below shows where the network data points instead, labelled as such.
| Where you are going | What the reports show | Our pick |
|---|---|---|
| Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas | no traveler reports yet | Country pick applies (Ubigi); A1 leads two independent speed panels in the cities |
| Black Sea coast villages | no traveler reports yet | Country pick applies (Ubigi); Vivacom holds the coverage awards |
| Bansko, Borovets, Pamporovo and the mountains | no traveler reports yet | Country pick applies (Ubigi); a provider with Vivacom access is the safer choice |
In Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas and on the motorways, the fastest network by third-party measurement is A1: the nPerf barometer for 2025 and Opensignal's January 2026 report both put it first on download speed. Ubigi, Holafly and eSIM4Travel name A1 on their Bulgaria pages; Nomad does not. In the Rila, Pirin and Rhodope mountains and in coastal villages, the picture flips to Vivacom, which won Opensignal's coverage awards and publishes 5G in 2,267 settlements and resorts [3]. Every Best-group provider has Vivacom access. No traveler has reported from Bansko or the Rhodopes yet; A1's own coverage map, dated 1 August 2026, shows outdoor coverage by technology and is the place to check a specific valley [2].
Border crossings are the one place the reports agree on a problem. A Nomad regional plan dropped on the way into Romania, a Saily Europe plan needed a reboot after each new country, and Ubigi's Europe plan failed in Serbia and Greece while working in Bulgaria. The regulator runs a project to limit accidental cross-border roaming near the Greek, Turkish, Serbian, Macedonian and Romanian borders, which tells you phones there do latch onto the wrong country's masts [1]. If your trip crosses a border, plan to restart the phone and reselect the network on the other side.
Local SIM Cards and Operator eSIMs in Bulgaria
A local prepaid data product beats a travel eSIM in Bulgaria once you need more than about 10 GB, and Yettel's online data eSIM removes the queue and the passport. Below 5 GB the travel eSIMs are cheaper, because local starter packs bundle 15 GB or more. Travel eSIMs keep three advantages: they work the moment you land, they cover a Balkan or EU route on one profile, and they carry no exposure to A1's out-of-bundle charge of €0.79 per MB, which A1's tariff page sets for data above a prepaid allowance (as of September 2026).
The only operator eSIM we could verify for tourists is Yettel's prepaid data eSIM, launched in March 2026 and bought entirely online in five steps with no ID registration, because data-only prepaid is exempt from the registration rule. As of March 2026 the 25 GB version costs €10.23 for 30 days, with unlimited data for the first 5 days, and the 100 GB version €40.90 for 60 days, with unlimited data for the first 20 days. Whether A1 and Vivacom sell a prepaid eSIM to visitors is contested across the guides we read, so we could not confirm it; several say their eSIMs are for contract customers only.
For physical SIMs, A1's prepaid mobile internet promotion of 20 GB for €7.67 ran until 31 August 2026, so check a1.bg for the current offer. Vivacom's own page listed a Free2Go starter with 25 GB, an EU roaming allowance and 1,000 national minutes at 13.70 lv, about €7.00, in May 2025, but later third-party guides quote different contents and prices and still use leva, so treat any Vivacom figure as unverified until you see it on vivacom.bg in euro. A third-party guide from August 2026 lists Yettel voice packs with 6 to 15 GB and 400 to 1,000 minutes at roughly €4 to €8, quoted in leva; those need ID registration.
Any prepaid product with voice minutes must be registered against a valid ID under a 2009 decision of the regulator, and one person may hold at most 10 prepaid voice numbers [1]. Bring a passport or EU ID card to an operator store in Sofia (Vitosha Boulevard, Serdika Center, Paradise Center, Mall of Sofia), Plovdiv, Varna or Burgas. Supermarkets sell starter packs but generally do not register them. Sofia Airport has carrier kiosks in arrivals at Terminal 2, but their hours and prices are reported only by guides that contradict each other, so do not plan around them. One clear rule: a local SIM wins for a long stay in Bulgaria alone with heavy data; a travel eSIM wins for a short trip, a multi-country route, or anyone who wants data working before the passport queue.
Mobile Networks in Bulgaria
Bulgaria has three networks and no fourth: A1 (the former Mobiltel or M-Tel), Yettel (the former Globul, then Telenor until March 2022) and Vivacom (the former BTC). The regulator's register shows spectrum fully allocated among the three [1]. A1 is the speed leader, Vivacom the coverage leader, and Yettel wins on availability and reliability, so the best eSIM for Bulgaria is one that can reach at least two of them.
On speed, two independent panels agree. According to the nPerf barometer for the whole of 2025, A1 led on download, upload, latency and 5G, with Yettel ahead on browsing and streaming. According to Opensignal's January 2026 report, A1 won download speed and consistent quality, Vivacom won every coverage award, and Yettel won time on network, 5G availability and reliability. A third verdict conflicts: Yettel reported its ninth consecutive umlaut "Best in Test" certificate in February 2026, which cannot be squared with A1's speed lead without umlaut's weighting. The regulator also measures coverage itself, in 47 settlements and along 23 main roads in 2025 [1].
On coverage, every operator figure is a share of the population, and none publishes a share of the territory, which we could not fill from any source. Vivacom lists 5G in 2,267 settlements and resorts and plans to pass 90% of the population in 2026 [3]; Yettel said in May 2026 that its 5G reached 86% of the population; A1's last published 4G figure dates from 2019, so we do not quote it. A1's detailed coverage map, dated 1 August 2026, shows outdoor coverage per technology [2]. There is no 3G shutdown to plan around: Vivacom's spectrum table still lists 3G on 900 and 2100 MHz, alongside 4G on six bands and 5G on 1800 and 3600 MHz [3]. A rural build-out funded by the recovery plan was reported to cover more than 200 settlements in 140 municipalities, with A1's share about 92% complete at 25 June 2026, according to trade press.
Which provider rides which network, as the providers' own pages state it as of September 2026: Ubigi on A1 and Vivacom [8]; Holafly on A1, Vivacom and "Telenor" [5]; eSIM4Travel on MobilTel, Telenor and Vivacom, the old names [9]; Nomad on Vivacom and Yettel, with no A1 [7]; Airalo on Vivacom plus one unnamed network [4]. Saily and GigSky have Bulgaria pages that name no network [6] [10], and neither do the pages of Maya Mobile, Roamless, Jetpac, GoMoWorld, Global YO and Yesim. Two cautions: a page that lists all three networks does not say which one your phone will pick, because steering rules are commercial and unpublished, and Airalo tells its users to select the network by hand [4]. Our guide to eSIMs with several networks shows how to switch.
How to Set Up an eSIM for Bulgaria
Install before you fly, on Wi-Fi, because every miss in the Bulgaria reports was fixed by a reboot, a reinstall or a help desk, and all three need a connection you may not have on arrival. Almost every provider here starts the plan on first connection in Bulgaria, not at install; the exceptions are Yesim, whose plan started at purchase in our test, and GoMoWorld, where you must press Start.
- Check the phone is unlocked and supports eSIM; our first eSIM guide has the compatibility check.
- Buy the plan at home. Activation windows are generous: 60 days at Nomad [7], 90 days at eSIM4Travel [9], 180 days at Saily [6], and a Ubigi QR stays valid six months [8].
- Install on Wi-Fi: scan the QR from the email, or use the in-app install at Saily, GoMoWorld, Roamless, GigSky and Global YO, which send no QR. Our guides for iPhone and Samsung walk through the menus.
- Leave the eSIM line off until you land, then turn on the line and data roaming. Set the APN if data does not start: "mobiledata" for Ubigi, "globaldata" for Maya Mobile and Global YO, and at Roamless pick the Proximus profile the app does not preselect.
- If you see full signal but no data, as the Saily traveler did, restart the phone; if you cross into Romania, Serbia or Greece, restart again and reselect the network by hand.
- Still nothing? Our troubleshooting guide covers the common causes before you open a ticket; at Ubigi and Nomad, a ticket may be a long wait.
Calls and SMS in Bulgaria
Bulgaria's calling code is +359. Every Bulgaria-only plan in our comparison tool is data-only, so calls go over WhatsApp or a similar app; Airalo's Bulgaria page confirms its Bultel plans carry no voice [4]. The only plans that cover Bulgaria with minutes and texts are Airalo's Discover+ global plans, which come with a US number. Saily sells a US number as an add-on after an ID check [6], Jetpac sells voice packs inside its app, Roamless and Global YO offer app calls, and Roamless adds an optional second number.
For a Bulgarian number, a local voice SIM is the only route, and it must be registered against your passport or EU ID [1]. Yettel's voice packs, as reported by a third-party guide in August 2026, bundle minutes with data; A1's Holiday Plus starter adds 30 minutes to a small data pack according to the same kind of source. Keep your home SIM active for incoming calls and texts, with its data roaming off, as the Saily traveler did on the river cruise.
Free eSIM Data for Bulgaria
Roamless offers a free Bulgaria eSIM with about 700 MB of credit for new users, listed in our comparison tool as a 30-day trial that starts at activation, with no throttling and hotspot allowed. In our test the credit was worth roughly 500 MB, and a small trickle of data stayed on at zero balance. It is enough to check that your phone and the local network get along before you pay, not enough for a holiday. Other trials we know of are not Bulgaria-specific: Nomad's 1 GB trial, GigSky's 100 MB and GoMoWorld's one-day trial. Our free eSIM guide keeps the current list.

Summary: the best eSIM for Bulgaria
Based on 15 traveler reports and our tests, Ubigi is the best option for most trips to Bulgaria: it worked well for 4 of 4 travelers who reported from the country, including a five-week Balkan trip and rural areas, and its page names both A1, the speed leader, and Vivacom, the coverage leader. Its weakness is service: in our test the ticket went unanswered and the app was poor, so it suits travelers who can fix an APN themselves. Nomad, which worked well for 3 of 4, is a fair-priced choice for a trip that stays inside Bulgaria on its local plan; its one miss was a multi-country plan that dropped in Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary, and its chat has no route to a person.
eSIM4Travel has no reports from Bulgaria yet, so we recommend it on price and service rather than on a country record: it is the cheapest in our comparison, names all three networks, and had the best help desk in our test, but it has no app and no way to top up without Wi-Fi. In every case, an eSIM installed at home and a restart at every border avoid most of the misses in the reports, and above 10 GB a local prepaid data eSIM is cheaper. That is the best eSIM for Bulgaria on today's evidence, and we will update this page as more travelers report.
