Best eSIM for Hungary in 2026: 14 Providers Ranked by Traveler Reports

Best eSIM Hungary
Key Takeaways

Key takeaways

Across 61 traveler reports from Hungary and our tests, the best option for most trips is Maya Mobile: it worked well for all 14 travelers who reported, on a global unlimited plan. Nomad (12 of 12) suits a fixed Hungary plan, though two reports describe outages. Ubigi (8 of 8) is the Budapest pick, with a help desk we could not reach. Holafly (5 of 5) fits Sziget and multi-country trips, but its speed was capped from the start in our test. GigSky (4 of 4) sells data in its app with no Wi-Fi, at a high price. eSIM4Travel is cheapest here, with one slow Hungary report and no app.

The best eSIM for Hungary depends on one question first: is Hungary the whole trip, or one stop on a Central European loop? Vienna, Bratislava and Zagreb are day trips from Budapest, and most of the 61 traveler reports we read describe multi-country trips. That makes a Europe-wide or global plan more useful than a Hungary-only bundle for many readers, and it is why the three providers with the best records here (Maya Mobile, Nomad and Ubigi) all sell plans that cross borders without a switch.

The network picture is simple. Three operators cover the country: Magyar Telekom, Yettel and One (the former Vodafone Hungary). Hungary is flat, so coverage gaps are not about mountains; they are about 5G, which the operators build in Budapest and the busy tourist regions first. The Great Plain east of Debrecen and the Zemplén and Bakony hills stay on 4G, and that is where the operators' coverage figures differ most. All three 3G networks are switched off, so an older phone that falls back to 3G for calls will not get them on a local SIM.

Buying locally is slower than elsewhere in the EU. Every SIM must be registered in person at an operator store with a passport or ID, and holders of foreign documents must come back in person for an annual check [9]. Telekom sells a data-only Travel SIM at its airport store on the arrivals level of Terminal 2B [4], and Yettel is the only operator that sells a tourist eSIM online before you land [7]. For most trips under 20 GB, a travel eSIM installed at home is cheaper and skips the store visit.

Best eSIM Providers for Hungary

eSIM plans in Hungary at a glance

How well each provider's eSIM works in Hungary

The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in Hungary. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

How we got these numbers: we read 61 public customer reviews that mention Hungary or a place in it, published between March 2024 and August 2026, and counted a report as "worked" when the reviewer said the eSIM connected, even with small hiccups. We treat 20 or more reports as strong evidence, 3 to 19 as limited, and fewer than 3 as too few to judge. A count like 12 of 12 means the eSIM worked well for 12 of the 12 travelers who reported from here; each provider section says what went wrong for the rest. The Vefru test score is a separate number: our own hands-on test of the provider, run outside Hungary, so it says how the provider behaves, not how the network performs here. Local operator prices in the text were checked on 25 Sep 2026; provider ratings, the plan tables and the price-per-GB chart are live and update on their own.

Maya Mobile eSIM in our hands

Maya Mobile testing preview Maya Mobile testing speed 1 Maya Mobile testing speed 2 Maya Mobile testing support

Maya Mobile is the pick for most trips to Hungary because nobody who reported from here had it fail, and most of those reports cover several countries on one eSIM. It worked well for 14 of 14 travelers who reported from Hungary (100%), limited evidence but the largest clean record in our file. The successes describe Central European loops (Czechia, Austria, Germany, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary on one plan), a 15-day stay where data was fast everywhere, and an eSIM bought and installed at Budapest airport in minutes when a traveler's own SIM failed on landing in August 2025. One reviewer wrote in April 2024 that "it worked from the moment I touched down" after activating before arrival for a Czech and Hungarian trip.

The misses are about speed, not signal. One traveler on a Budapest, Vienna and Slovenia trip in January 2026 found coverage weaker in a few areas than other providers, and one who tracked speeds for days across Spain, Italy and Hungary found them low throughout: fine for email and streaming with some buffering, not enough for video meetings. Two further reports are about the help desk rather than the network, both positive: a quick cancellation when a phone turned out to be incompatible, and a goodwill fix when auto-recharge was left on.

Maya sells one thing: a global unlimited plan for 3, 7, 14 or 30 days, with a Global + Cruise variant, 5 GB a day at full speed and then a slower rate, hotspot allowed, no Hungary-specific bundle on its Hungary page when we checked on 29 Aug 2026 [14]. That makes it the natural choice for a week or more across borders and a poor one for a two-day city break, where a small fixed plan from another provider costs less. In our test (run in Czechia) it connected on 5G at once and slowed only after the daily allowance, the fairest unlimited rule we measured, and the QR code arrived by email; the help desk is a WhatsApp bot that hands over to a person after a form, which is the main weak spot in our Maya Mobile review. Its page does not name a Hungarian network. It is among the cheapest global unlimited plans in our comparison, and you can buy it on Maya's site or in the optional app.

Nomad eSIM in our hands

Nomad testing preview Nomad testing speed 1 Nomad testing speed 2 Nomad testing support

Nomad is the pick for travelers who want a fixed-data Hungary plan rather than unlimited, and who will not need the help desk. It worked well for 12 of 12 travelers who reported from Hungary (100%), limited evidence. The successes cover Budapest ("the connection was fast and stable everywhere", July 2026), a bus ride from Italy to Hungary with data the whole way, the Europe plan across France, Hungary and Austria, and a first-time eSIM user in Hungary who praised the install instructions.

Two of those reports still describe outages, so the record is good rather than spotless. One traveler had no network at all for almost 10 hours in Budapest in June 2026; another lost the connection at points in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria in July 2026. A third had to restart the phone when crossing borders on a five-country trip before data came back, which is normal for roaming eSIMs but worth knowing. Nobody reported a plan that excluded a region or a blocked app.

Nomad's Hungary plans run from 1 GB to 50 GB over 3 to 30 days, plus unlimited for 3, 5, 7 or 10 days with 2 GB a day at full speed and then a sharp slowdown; the Europe, Balkans, Global and Global-EX plans also cover Hungary. Its Hungary page names Yettel and Vodafone (now One) as the networks, as of August 2026. In our test the app was the best part, with a home-screen widget for remaining data, while the help desk was a bot with no route to a person, the finding behind its low support mark in our Nomad review. Price sits slightly below the market average overall but dearer in Europe, and plans are not refundable once activated. You can buy Nomad's Hungary plan in the app; the QR code also comes by email.

Ubigi is the travel eSIM brand of Paris operator Transatel, with one reusable eSIM for 200+ destinations. Data was fast in our test, and its 3 GB, 10 GB and 30-day unlimited plans are cheap. Its weak point is support: a chatbot that ends in an email ticket, with no live agent.

Ubigi eSIM in our hands

Ubigi testing preview Ubigi testing speed 1 Ubigi testing speed 2 Ubigi testing support

Ubigi is the pick for Budapest and for anyone who needs a hotspot for work, because its reports are the most detailed and the most urban in our file. It worked well for 8 of 8 travelers who reported from Hungary (100%), limited evidence, and 5 of those 8 were in Budapest. The successes describe an eSIM that "automatically activated as soon as I entered Hungary" (August 2026), video calls over a hotspot, a reliable and fast week in Szeged and Budapest, strong signal all over Budapest, and a trip where it worked in Hungary and Croatia but not in Serbia.

The one real complaint is about the unlimited plan: a traveler who bought it for Hungary in June 2026 was slowed under the fair-use rule after a couple of days and felt misled by the word "unlimited". Another rated Budapest slightly below France and Sweden. Nobody reported a dead zone.

Ubigi's Hungary plans are 3 GB, 10 GB and 50 GB over 7 to 30 days, plus unlimited for 7 or 15 days; the Europe, Europe Extended, World and Best World plans cover Hungary too, and there is no 5 GB or 20 GB size. Its page names Yettel as its only Hungarian network, as of August 2026, which is the fastest network on the regulator's drive tests but also a single point of failure. Its 10 GB plan was the cheapest 10 GB option among the provider pages in our August 2026 research, though eSIM4Travel undercuts it in our comparison tool. In our test (run in Czechia) data was fast with no throttling and we could buy more at zero balance, but the website and app were the clumsiest tested and a help-desk ticket went unanswered for 24 hours, the finding behind its low score in our Ubigi review. The QR code is valid for 6 months and the plan starts on first connection in the country. Ubigi's site sells it as a guest checkout.

Holafly eSIM in our hands

Holafly testing outdoor Holafly testing support Holafly testing support 2 Holafly testing speed

Holafly is the pick for travelers who want unlimited data without thinking about allowances, with one caveat we never leave out: in our test, Holafly's speed was capped from the start, before any data was used. That is enough for maps, messaging, browsing and streaming, and slow for large downloads, uploads, cloud backups and laptop work over the hotspot, which Holafly limits to 1 GB a day. It worked well for 5 of 5 travelers who reported from Hungary (100%), limited evidence. The successes include a Sziget festival trip in August 2026 where the eSIM installed and activated in the app without trouble, a Hungary and Switzerland trip with 5G throughout, and families using one eSIM across up to nine European countries.

The one hiccup came in April 2026, when a traveler needed the help desk to fix a connection problem in Hungary and then carried on without issues. Nobody reported a dead zone or an excluded region.

Holafly's Hungary page listed unlimited plans from 3 to 30 days when we checked in August 2026, on Yettel and Vodafone (now One), with no top-ups (you buy a new eSIM) and a free 1 GB a month if you keep the eSIM after the plan ends. Our comparison tool had no Holafly plan listed for Hungary when we exported it, so there is no plan table here. In our test the install was one tap with 5G at once, but the measured speed looked throttled from the first megabyte, the finding behind the lowest speed mark of the 14 providers in our Holafly review. On price it is among the most expensive unlimited offers in our comparison. Holafly's Hungary page sells by the day.

GigSky eSIM in our hands

GigSky testing outdoor GigSky testing speed 1 GigSky testing speed 2 GigSky testing support

GigSky is the pick for travelers who are likely to run out of data mid-trip, because its app is one of only two we tested that still works when the plan hits zero, so you can buy more without finding Wi-Fi. It worked well for 4 of 4 travelers who reported from Hungary (100%), limited evidence, and 3 of the 4 were in Budapest. The successes describe easy in-app install, 5G in Budapest and most of Germany, and a trip where it worked well in Hungary while failing in Vienna and much of Austria.

The misses were small but telling. One traveler had a single slow day in Budapest in June 2026; another had to toggle Airplane mode to reconnect when moving around. The worst report, from October 2025, is about the app rather than the network: a traveler who ran out of data on day 10 in Budapest saw the app crash twice while buying more, was charged, and got it working on the third try. That matches what we saw in our test, where the app is a wrapped website.

GigSky's Hungary plans follow its usual ladder: 1 GB for 7 days, 3 GB for 15 days, 5 GB and 10 GB for 30 days, 20 GB for 90 days, 50 GB for 180 days, and a 1-day unlimited pass; its Europe, Cruise + Europe and World plans also cover Hungary. Its Hungary page offered a free 500 MB trial for 7 days when we checked in August 2026, and the page does not name a network. In our test a person answered the help desk at once, the eSIM had to be bought in the app, and speeds felt unstable, the findings in our GigSky review. It is the most expensive provider in our comparison overall, though at the market average in big European markets. You can see GigSky's Hungary page, but the purchase itself happens in the app.

eSIM4Travel testing outdoor eSIM4Travel testing speed 1 eSIM4Travel testing speed 2 eSIM4Travel testing support

eSIM4Travel is in this group for its price and its help desk, not for its Hungary record, which is a single report. Its 3 GB, 5 GB and 10 GB Hungary plans were the cheapest of any provider in our comparison tool when we exported it, by a wide margin, and in our test its help desk was the best we tried: a short bot, one click to a person, who solved the problem and suggested switching network. Only 1 traveler has reported from Hungary so far, and that report was a miss: a 1 GB, 7-day plan in Budapest in October 2025 that was fine on day one and slow to unusable from day two, with less than half the data used. One report cannot tell you whether that was the plan, the phone or the network.

The downsides are the same everywhere: there is no app, you pay by typing card details (no Google Pay), and once the data runs out you cannot reach the store without Wi-Fi. Our hands-on test ran in Switzerland, not Hungary, so it says how the provider behaves, not how the network performs here.

Its Hungary plans run from 1 GB to 50 GB over 3 to 30 days, plus unlimited from 3 to 30 days with 3 GB a day at full speed, and the Best Europe 41 and Global 72 plans cover Hungary too. Our comparison tool lists the Hungary plans as Telenor, T-Mobile and Vodafone, the former names of Yettel, Telekom and One; the provider's own page did not disclose a network when we checked in August 2026, so treat the listing as unconfirmed. The eSIM comes by email as a QR code, plans activate within 90 days and start on first connection, and you can get a refund within two months if less than a tenth of the data is used, as we found in our eSIM4Travel review. It suits travelers who install at home and want cheap fixed data; you can buy on eSIM4Travel's Hungary page.

Airalo eSIM in our hands

Airalo testing outdoor Airalo testing speed 1 Airalo testing speed 2 Airalo testing support

Airalo has the worst Hungary record of the 14 providers: it worked well for 3 of 9 travelers who reported from Hungary (33%), limited evidence. The six misses cluster in July 2026 and are mostly total: two travelers bought a Hungary package that "didn't work" (July 2026), one found it worked in the USA but not in Hungary or Finland, one had a Europe eSIM stop in Austria and stay dead in Hungary a day later, one had an unlimited Europe plan that was slow to non-existent in Hungary and stopped by lunchtime, and one saw the connection keep disappearing in Budapest. The successes are a traveler who used it across Hungary, Bulgaria, Spain and Greece without trouble, and one who had good service except for a single day in Budapest.

Airalo's Hungary page names Vodafone (One) as its only network, as of August 2026, and One is third on every published speed metric; third-party listings from the first half of 2026 named Yettel and Vodafone instead, so the network may differ from what the page says. Its Szia! plans run from 1 GB to 50 GB over 3 to 30 days plus unlimited from 3 to 30 days at 3 GB a day, and the EUconnect, Eurolink and Discover plans cover Hungary, with Discover+ adding calls and texts. In our test the purchase and install were among the easiest, which is why first-timers like it, but it is never cheap, as our Airalo review says. It might still suit someone who needs a plan with a phone number; Airalo's Hungary page lists the current options.

Global YO testing outdoor Global YO testing speed 1 Global YO testing speed 2 Global YO testing support

Global YO is the second-cheapest provider in our comparison and worked well for 2 of 2 travelers who reported from Hungary (100%), too few to judge. One used a single eSIM through Germany, Hungary and Croatia on a backpacking trip (February 2025); the other bought it because it was the only affordable option covering Montenegro, Czechia and Hungary together (August 2024). Neither reported a miss.

Its Hungary plans run from 1 GB to 100 GB over 3 to 60 days, plus Day Plans with a daily allowance that slows afterwards; there is no true unlimited plan. The Europe Explorer and Global Explorer plans cover Hungary too, and its page does not name a network. The reasons it is not a top pick are the thin record and our test findings: the eSIM can only be bought in the app, and the help desk replied with a template and then took over half an hour, as our Global YO review shows. It gets cheaper as plans grow, so it suits price-driven travelers who need 10 GB or more and install at home. Global YO's Hungary page shows the ladder.

Roamless is a US provider built around one global eSIM for 203 destinations, paid with pay-as-you-go credit. It was fast and unthrottled in our test, and travelers report it working in 91% of cases. Its weak point is buying: the website forces you into the app, and large data amounts cost more than most rivals.

Roamless eSIM in our hands

Roamless testing preview Roamless testing speed 1 Roamless testing speed 2 Roamless testing support

Roamless is the only provider whose Hungary page names all three Hungarian networks, including Telekom, the coverage leader, as of August 2026, which makes it the one to look at for countryside driving. It worked well for 1 of 1 travelers who reported from Hungary (100%), too few to judge: a five-week trip through Italy, Hungary, Romania and Slovenia in spring 2025 with no failures mentioned. Our comparison tool lists its Hungary plans as Vodafone only, so the three-network claim rests on Roamless's own page.

Roamless sells pay-as-you-go credit that never expires, 30-day Hungary plans from 1 GB to 200 GB, a free Hungary eSIM with a small starter allowance, and Europe and Global 30-day plans; it states no throttling, and the eSIM can be deleted and reinstalled without losing credit. In our test the preselected APN did not work until we picked another, and the eSIM is sold only in the app, the findings in our Roamless review. On price it sits at the market average in popular destinations but is dear for 10 GB and up, since credit has no volume discount. It suits light users who hop between countries; Roamless's Hungary page lists the networks.

ByteSIM is a Hong Kong eSIM shop with a huge catalog: daily, fixed and unlimited plans for about 200 destinations. Data was fast in our test, and travelers report it working in 88% of cases. The checkout, the app and support were the weak points.

ByteSIM eSIM in our hands

ByteSIM testing preview ByteSIM testing speed 1 ByteSIM testing speed 2 ByteSIM testing support

ByteSIM worked well for 1 of 1 travelers who reported from Hungary (100%), too few to judge: 5G with no issues in June 2025, after a WhatsApp exchange with the help desk that "took us a while". That is too little to rank it, and our test found the checkout and app the clumsiest of the 14, with no reply from the help desk in 15 minutes.

Its Hungary catalogue is the largest in our comparison tool: fixed plans from 500 MB to 300 GB over 1 to 30 days, daily-allowance plans, and unlimited for 1 to 30 days, with no regional plan needed. Longer validity costs more, so it looks cheaper for short trips, and there are no top-ups: you buy a new plan. Its page does not name a network. The reason it is not a top pick is the thin record plus the purchase and support findings in our ByteSIM review; it might still suit experienced users who want a local payment method like iDEAL or Klarna. ByteSIM's site has the full ladder.

Yesim eSIM in our hands

Yesim testing outdoor Yesim testing speed 1 Yesim testing speed 2 Yesim testing support

Yesim worked well for 1 of 1 travelers who reported from Hungary (100%), too few to judge, and that report came from Budapest. Nothing in it describes a miss, and nothing describes the trip either, so it says only that the eSIM connected.

Yesim's Hungary plans are mostly unlimited sold by the day, from 1 to 30 days, plus fixed plans from 500 MB to 30 GB; its Europe, Global and Unlim Day Pass plans cover Hungary too. The unlimited fair-use limit is set by the local operator and not published. Third-party listings name Yettel and Vodafone as its networks; its own page does not. Two test findings keep it out of the top group: our plan started counting at purchase, not at first use, so buy it close to the trip, and the help desk took 15 to 60 minutes per reply, among the slowest tested, as our Yesim review shows. Its fixed plans are dear while its unlimited is at the market average, so it suits experienced users who want unlimited by the day. Yesim's Hungary page lists them.

GoMoWorld eSIM in our hands

GoMoWorld testing preview GoMoWorld testing speed 1 GoMoWorld testing speed 2 GoMoWorld testing support

GoMoWorld split its two Hungary reports: it worked well for 1 of 2 travelers who reported from Hungary (50%), too few to judge. The success was a traveler who found it easy to set up and good value in Croatia and Hungary in 2025; the miss was a traveler who could not get it to work in New York, Hungary or Canada across three attempts (August 2026). That pattern fits what we found in our test: the plan does nothing until you press Start in the app, which is a common cause of "it never worked".

Its Hungary plans are 4 GB for 7 days and 15 GB, 40 GB or 60 GB for 30 days, at four fixed euro prices that apply in every country, plus a Europe plan from 2.5 GB to 35 GB; there is no unlimited plan and no calls. Its page says "major Hungarian networks" without naming one. In our test (run in Austria) it was the fastest of the 14 with no throttling, but the eSIM exists only in the app, one account serves one device, and a person on the help desk is available only in office hours, the findings in our GoMoWorld review. It sits below the market average and is best value at 15 GB and up, so it suits heavy users on a Europe trip who read the Start instruction. GoMoWorld's site points to the app.

Saily eSIM in our hands

Saily testing outdoor Saily testing speed 1 Saily testing speed 2 Saily testing support

Saily has the best app and help desk in our test and the worst single Hungary report: it worked well for 0 of 1 travelers who reported from Hungary (0%), too few to judge. The one report, from July 2026, describes an unlimited 10-day plan with very poor signal all the way from Germany to Hungary, email that would not load, and a refund refused afterwards because the plan had expired; the traveler also found that closing the app wiped the live-chat history. One report says nothing about the network for the next traveler, but it is the only evidence we have.

Saily's Hungary plans are 1 GB for 7 days, 3 GB to 20 GB for 30 days and unlimited for 15 days with 5 GB a day at full speed; the Europe and Global plans cover Hungary too. Its page does not name a network. You have 180 days to activate, and extras include a free VPN virtual location, an ad blocker and an optional US number. In our test the in-app install was the smoothest of all and a person on the help desk answered fast, but Saily is among the two most expensive providers in most popular destinations, as our Saily review sets out. It suits first-time eSIM users who value the app over price; Saily's Hungary page leads to the app.

Jetpac eSIM in our hands

Jetpac testing outdoor Jetpac testing speed 1 Jetpac testing speed 2 Jetpac testing support

Jetpac has no traveler reports from Hungary yet, so we cannot judge its record here. Its Hungary plans run from 1 GB to 40 GB over 3 to 30 days, plus unlimited for 3 to 30 days with 3 GB a day at full speed; our comparison tool flags every Hungary unlimited plan as 4G only, while the Europe unlimited plans are listed with 5G. The Europe and Global plans cover Hungary as well. Its own page does not name a network; our comparison tool lists Vodafone and Telenor (the old name of Yettel) for the regional plans, and third-party listings say the same.

Two things to know before buying. Its 20 GB Hungary plan cost more than its 30 GB and 40 GB plans when we checked in August 2026, an inverted ladder worth re-checking at purchase. And in our test the site was slow with pop-ups and the app rough, while the install was automatic and WhatsApp, Maps, Uber and Grab stay free after the data runs out on 3 GB packs or larger, as our Jetpac review describes. It is dear for 3 GB to 20 GB, at the market average for unlimited. Frequent flyers who want in-app voice packs and the free lounge on a delayed flight might still choose it; Jetpac's site has the Hungary ladder.

Providers travelers report from Hungary that we have not tested

Simify worked for 4 of 4 travelers who reported from Hungary (limited evidence). All four used unlimited multi-country plans: a first-time eSIM user from France to Norway to Hungary, a 45-day plan across ten countries from the UK to Turkey, a long trip through Japan, Turkey, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czechia and Italy, and a Hungary, Austria and UK trip where maps worked throughout. Two of the four praised the help desk. Simify's page says "leading Hungary networks" without naming one, plans must be activated within six months and cannot be topped up, as of August 2026. We have not tested it, so it has no Vefru test score.

Best eSIM Plans for Hungary

Price per GB in Hungary by eSIM Provider

How much does each provider charge per GB in Hungary? The chart below compares plans of 1 to 10 GB that last 6 to 14 days, the usual range for a one- or two-week trip. Provider websites show only their own plans, so this side-by-side view is one you would otherwise have to calculate yourself. A shorter bar means a lower price per GB.

Generated 26.10.2026 14:25

The tables below are live and sorted by what a plan of each size costs today. Two kinds of plan stand out in Hungary. Fixed plans from 1 GB to 50 GB are sold by Airalo, ByteSIM, eSIM4Travel, GigSky, Global YO, Jetpac, Nomad, Roamless, Saily, Ubigi and Yesim; eSIM4Travel and Global YO are usually the cheapest of those in our comparison. Unlimited plans for Hungary come from Airalo, ByteSIM, eSIM4Travel, Holafly, Jetpac, Nomad, Saily, Ubigi and Yesim, and Maya Mobile's global unlimited plan covers Hungary too; the daily full-speed allowance ranges from 2 GB (Nomad) to 5 GB (Maya Mobile, Saily), with Holafly's limit unpublished and its speed capped from the start in our test. If Hungary is one stop on a longer trip, compare plans that cover both Hungary and Croatia rather than buying two; our Croatia eSIM guide has that country's reports. For picking a size, how much data you need for a trip gives the usual weekly ranges.

Best eSIM for Budapest, Szeged and Lake Balaton

Budapest is the only place in Hungary with enough reports to judge on its own: 19 of the 61 reports name it. Szeged has one report and Lake Balaton none, so the country pick applies there.

Where you are goingWhat the reports showOur pick
BudapestMaya Mobile 3/3, Nomad 3/3, Ubigi 5/5, Holafly 1/1, GigSky 3/3, Airalo 1/2, Yesim 1/1, eSIM4Travel 0/1Ubigi (most Budapest reports, all positive; Maya Mobile, Nomad and GigSky worked for every Budapest reporter too)
Szegedtoo few reportsCountry pick applies
Lake Balatontoo few reportsCountry pick applies

Best eSIM for Budapest

Ubigi is the pick for Budapest because 5 of 5 Budapest reports were positive and they describe exactly what a city visitor needs: strong signal across the city, maps and public transport on a week's data, and a hotspot good enough for video calls. Its only Hungarian network is Yettel, which the regulator's drive tests rank fastest [1], and the one lukewarm report rated Budapest slightly below France and Sweden. Maya Mobile, Nomad and GigSky each have 3 of 3 in Budapest, so none of the four is a risky choice; the difference is what you need around the data. Maya Mobile suits a trip that continues to Vienna or Prague on the same unlimited plan, Nomad suits a fixed Hungary plan with a good app, and GigSky suits a traveler who may need to buy more data with no Wi-Fi. Holafly's one Budapest report (the Sziget festival) was positive too, but its speed was capped from the start in our test.

The Budapest misses belong to the runners-up. Airalo split its two Budapest reports: one day without service for one traveler, and a connection that kept disappearing for another, both in July 2026. eSIM4Travel's single Budapest report went slow to unusable from day two of a 1 GB plan. Nomad's clean Budapest count still includes a traveler with no network for almost 10 hours in June 2026, and GigSky's includes one slow day and an app that crashed while buying more data. At the airport, the only report is a good one: a Maya Mobile eSIM bought, installed and working within minutes of landing in August 2025 after the traveler's own SIM failed.

No traveler has reported from Lake Balaton yet. Yettel builds its 5G in cities and busy tourist regions first, which our research puts the Balaton shore among, while Telekom holds the coverage awards in the latest Opensignal report; so a Yettel-based eSIM (Ubigi, Nomad, Holafly) should be fine around the lake in season, and Roamless is the only one that also reaches Telekom for the villages between. Szeged's one report, on Ubigi, called it reliable and fast.

Local SIM Cards and Operator eSIMs in Hungary

A local SIM beats a travel eSIM in Hungary only if you need a Hungarian phone number or more than about 50 GB; below 20 GB, a travel eSIM installed at home is cheaper and skips the store visit. The reason is registration: every SIM must be registered, foreign nationals must do it in person at an operator store with a passport, ID card or driving licence, and holders of foreign documents must come back in person once a year for a data check [9]. Prices below include Hungary's 27% VAT, the highest in the EU.

Yettel is the only operator that sells a tourist eSIM online before you arrive. As of September 2026 its Yettel Pass costs 5,000 Ft for 3 days of unlimited data, 9,000 Ft for 7 days and 12,000 Ft for 30 GB over 30 days, each with an EU allowance, a +36 number and no top-up; the plan starts on first connection, which must happen within 30 days of purchase, and the eSIM is valid for 60 days [7]. Yettel's own site gives two different EU allowances for the same plans, so check the figure at checkout. In-store, the Yettel Stay plan adds voice to the 30 GB plan; the stores are at Astoria, WestEnd and Corvin Plaza, and non-EEA visitors need a passport [8].

Telekom sells a data-only Travel SIM in its stores and at the Airport HUB on the arrivals level of Terminal 2B, including an eSIM version, but only in person and only to holders of a non-Hungarian ID: as of August 2026, 20 GB for 10 days costs 10,000 Ft and 100 GB for 30 days costs 15,000 Ft, with no top-up and no refund [4]. Telekom's page gave two different EU allowances for the 100 GB plan when we checked in August and again in September 2026, so confirm it in the store. The Domino prepaid SIM is the cheap way to get a number: 1 GB plus 20 minutes for 990 Ft on a 120-day card, 2 GB plus 40 minutes for 1,990 Ft, and add-ons like 10 GB with no expiry for 5,990 Ft, as of August 2026 [5].

One (the former Vodafone) has the cheapest starter: a Tuti prepaid card for 500 Ft at resellers with 2 GB and 100 minutes for 30 days, or 1,500 Ft pre-activated in a One store, as of August 2026 [12]. Foreign customers cannot activate it online and must visit a store with ID, and non-EU visitors need a passport [11]. One's eSIM is free, but the same store visit applies. A tourist unlimited eSIM from One appears on third-party sites; we could not find it on One's own pages, so we do not list it.

What to avoid: the airport packs. A 2023 third-party report put Yettel's arrivals bundles at well above the same operator's online prices, and the airport desk line-up differs between sources, so we could not confirm what is on sale there now. The one scenario where local wins clearly is heavy data for a month: Telekom's 100 GB Travel SIM costs less per GB than any travel eSIM in our comparison. For a week of unlimited data, Yettel Pass and the travel eSIMs cost about the same, and the local one adds a number.

Mobile Networks in Hungary

Three networks cover Hungary, and the choice between them is speed versus reach. Yettel is the fastest: the regulator NMHH's own drive tests rank it first on both 5G and 4G devices [1], and Yettel's press release cites Ookla ranking it fastest in the first half of 2025 [10]. Telekom has the widest reach: it took every coverage award in Opensignal's two most recent Hungary reports (February and August 2025), according to Opensignal, and Telekom reported outdoor 5G population coverage of 88% in the first half of 2026 with a target of 99% by the end of 2026. One, the former Vodafone Hungary, is third on every published speed metric. By SIM count at the end of 2025, NMHH figures put Telekom at 46%, One at 28% and Yettel at 25% [2].

Where it matters: Yettel builds its 5G in cities and the busy tourist regions, claims more than 99% outdoor 4G population coverage [6], and said in June 2026 that its outdoor 5G population coverage was above 75%, so over open country it is on 4G sooner than Telekom. For Budapest, Debrecen, Győr, Szeged and Balaton, a Yettel-based eSIM is the fastest choice; for driving across the Great Plain or the hills, Telekom is the safer network. The operators' own maps show the detail by address: Telekom [3] and One [13].

Which eSIM rides which network, as of August 2026: Ubigi uses Yettel only (its page); Nomad and Holafly use Yettel and Vodafone (One) (their pages); Roamless names all three and is the only provider here that reaches Telekom (its page); Airalo names Vodafone (One) only (its page). Jetpac and Yesim are reported on Yettel and Vodafone by third parties. eSIM4Travel's plans are listed in our comparison tool under the old names Telenor, T-Mobile and Vodafone. Maya Mobile, GigSky, Global YO, Saily, ByteSIM and GoMoWorld do not name a network on their pages. All three 3G networks are off: Yettel's since November 2023 (its own statement), Telekom's and One's since 2022 and 2023 according to trade reports. From January 2026 Telekom's 2G traffic runs on Yettel's 2G network, which matters only for very old phones. If you want to switch networks on an eSIM that offers more than one, our guide to eSIMs with several networks shows how.

How to Set Up an eSIM for Hungary

Install at home, on Wi-Fi, and the eSIM will start when it first connects in Hungary for almost every provider here. The exceptions from our tests: Yesim's plan started at purchase, so buy it just before you fly, and GoMoWorld does nothing until you press Start in the app. Activation windows are generous for the rest: Ubigi's QR code is valid for 6 months, Saily gives 180 days, eSIM4Travel 90 days, and Nomad's page said 60 days when we checked in August 2026 while our comparison tool lists 30.

  1. Check your phone is unlocked and eSIM-capable; our first eSIM guide has the compatibility check.
  2. Buy the plan at home. Maya Mobile, Nomad, Ubigi, eSIM4Travel, Airalo, Yesim, ByteSIM, Jetpac and Holafly send a QR code by email; GoMoWorld, Saily, Roamless, GigSky and Global YO need the app to buy.
  3. Install it on Wi-Fi: scan the QR code or use the app's one-tap install. The guides for adding an eSIM on iPhone and adding an eSIM on Samsung cover the menus.
  4. Set the eSIM as the data line and turn on data roaming for it. Maya Mobile and Global YO needed the APN "globaldata" in our tests, GigSky "gigsky", Ubigi "mobiledata"; Roamless's preselected APN did not work until we chose another.
  5. Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts, with its data roaming off so it cannot bill you.
  6. If data does not appear on landing, toggle Airplane mode (what one GigSky traveler did in Budapest) or restart the phone, which fixed a Nomad traveler's border crossings; then check eSIM not working: troubleshooting.

Calls and SMS in Hungary

Hungary's calling code is +36, and most travel eSIMs here are data-only, so calls go over WhatsApp, FaceTime or a similar app. The exceptions among the 14: Airalo's Discover+ global plans include calls and texts with a US number, Jetpac sells in-app voice packs, Roamless offers in-app calls and an optional second number, Global YO has outgoing app calls, and Saily sells a US number as an add-on. None of the Hungary-only plans in our comparison tool includes minutes or texts.

For a Hungarian +36 number, a local SIM is the route: Yettel's online tourist eSIM comes with a number, Telekom's Domino includes minutes, and One's Tuti card includes 100 minutes, all after in-person registration (see the local SIM section). Since all three 3G networks are off, calls on a Hungarian SIM need a phone that handles voice over 4G, which rules out some older handsets. For banking or booking codes sent by SMS, keep your home SIM active alongside the eSIM.

Free eSIM Data for Hungary

Three free trials in the files work in Hungary. Roamless lists a free Hungary eSIM with a small starter allowance in our comparison tool, and its credit does not expire. GigSky's Hungary page offered a free 500 MB trial for 7 days when we checked in August 2026. GoMoWorld gives a free 1-day trial, which in our test still needed the Start button pressed. Nomad's Hungary page also advertised a free 1 GB trial in August 2026, though our comparison tool shows its trial-labelled 1 GB plan with a price, so check before relying on it. Our list of free eSIM data plans and trials keeps track of which ones are still running.

Frequently Asked Questions About eSIMs in Hungary

Which eSIM works best in Hungary?
Maya Mobile had the best record in traveler reports from Hungary: it worked well for all 14 travelers who reported, most of them on multi-country trips, with the only complaints about speed rather than signal. Nomad (12 of 12) and Ubigi (8 of 8) follow, though two Nomad reports describe outages in Budapest and elsewhere. Holafly also worked for all 5 of its reporters, but its speed was capped from the start in our test. Compare current prices with (eSIM Comparison).
What is the cheapest eSIM for Hungary?
eSIM4Travel had the cheapest 3 GB, 5 GB and 10 GB Hungary plans in our comparison tool when we exported it, with Global YO usually second. The live chart above shows today's price per GB. eSIM4Travel has only one Hungary report so far, and it was a slow one, so the cheapest option is not yet the best proven one. Check today's prices with (eSIM Comparison).
How much data do I need for Hungary?
Most travelers use 3 to 5 GB in a week of maps, messaging and social media, and 10 GB or more with streaming or video calls. Hungary's local operators sell data cheaply above 50 GB, so very heavy users on a month-long stay should look at Telekom's Travel SIM instead of a travel eSIM. For a number based on your own habits, use (Travel Data Calculator).
Which eSIM is best for Budapest?
Ubigi had the most Budapest reports and all of them were positive: 5 of 5, describing strong signal across the city and a hotspot good enough for video calls. Maya Mobile, Nomad and GigSky each worked for all 3 of their Budapest reporters, so any of the four is a safe choice. Airalo split its two Budapest reports, with one traveler losing service for a day and another seeing the connection drop repeatedly.
Can I buy a Hungary SIM card for tourists at Budapest airport?
Yes, Telekom sells its data-only Travel SIM, including an eSIM version, at its store on the arrivals level of Terminal 2B, but only in person and only to holders of a non-Hungarian ID. Every Hungarian SIM must be registered in person with a passport or ID. Airport bundles cost more than the same operators' online prices, so a travel eSIM installed before you fly, or Yettel's online tourist eSIM, avoids both the queue and the markup.
Do I need a Hungary eSIM or will a Europe eSIM do?
A Europe or global plan is the better fit if you will cross into Austria, Slovakia or Croatia, which most travelers who reported from Hungary did. Maya Mobile's global unlimited plan and Nomad's Europe plan both had clean Hungary records. A Hungary-only plan is cheaper per GB for a trip that stays in the country; eSIM4Travel and Ubigi sell the lowest-priced ones we found. Compare both kinds with (eSIM Comparison).
Can I make calls with a Hungary eSIM?
Most Hungary eSIMs are data-only, so calls go over apps like WhatsApp. Airalo's Discover+ plans include calls and texts with a US number, Jetpac sells voice packs in its app, and Roamless and Global YO offer app calls. For a Hungarian +36 number you need a local SIM, which means registering in person at an operator store; Yettel's online tourist eSIM is the only exception and still comes with a number.

Summary: the best eSIM for Hungary

Based on 61 traveler reports and our own tests, we recommend Maya Mobile for most trips to Hungary: it worked well for all 14 travelers who reported, mostly on multi-country trips, and its one weakness is that it sells only a global unlimited plan, which is poor value for a two-day stay. Nomad (12 of 12) is the choice for a fixed Hungary plan with a good app, with two outage reports and a bot for a help desk as its weak points. Ubigi (8 of 8, all five Budapest reports positive) had the cheapest 10 GB plan we found and a hotspot that handled video calls, but its help desk never answered us. Holafly (5 of 5) is the unlimited option for festivals and multi-country trips, with speeds capped from the start in our test and no top-ups. GigSky (4 of 4) is dear but is the one app that still sells data when the plan hits zero.

eSIM4Travel is the cheapest provider in our comparison for Hungary and had the best help desk in our test, but its one Hungary report was a slow one and it has no app. Airalo is the one to be careful with here: 6 of its 9 Hungary reports describe an eSIM that did not work at all or barely worked. For heavy data over a month, Telekom's Travel SIM from the Terminal 2B store beats every travel eSIM on price per GB. For everything else, the best eSIM for Hungary is one you install at home, start on landing, and never have to register in a store.
