Best eSIM for Malta in 2026: 14 Providers Ranked by Traveler Reports

František Macháček
Best eSIM Malta
Key Takeaways

Key takeaways

Based on 30 traveler reports from Malta and our tests, the best option for stays of a week or more is Maya Mobile: it worked well for 8 of 8 travelers, though it sells nothing for short trips. Holafly (5 of 5) uses all three Maltese networks, but its speeds were capped in our test. Nomad (4 of 4) had the only Gozo and Comino report, but its help desk was unreachable. Airalo (3 of 3) suits a first eSIM, but its app needs Wi-Fi once data runs out. eSIM4Travel is usually the cheapest here, with no traveler reports yet and no app.

The best eSIM for Malta is less about the island's coverage than about how you buy and use it. All three Maltese networks, Epic, GO and Melita, provided nationwide 4G in the regulator's latest test [1], and 27 of the 30 traveler reports we read from Malta say the eSIM worked well. The three misses were a GigSky plan that lost signal in Valletta, a GigSky cruise plan that failed at sea, and a Ubigi plan that ran out early.

Two things are specific to Malta. 5G is thinner than 4G, most of all on Gozo and in the western region [1], so plan for 4G speeds there. And buying locally is harder than it looks: Epic sells eSIMs in store only [7], and Maltese law requires SIM registration with ID [4]. We could not confirm from an official source where the airport SIM shop is or when it opens.

Below we rank 14 providers on those traveler reports, then on price, then on our own tests. We also show which network each one uses, what a local SIM costs and when it beats a travel eSIM.

Best eSIM Providers for Malta

eSIM plans in Malta at a glance

How well each provider's eSIM works in Malta

The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in Malta. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

How we got these numbers: we read 30 public customer reviews that mention Malta or a place in it, published between April 2024 and August 2026, and counted a report as "worked" when the reviewer said the eSIM connected, even with small hiccups. We treat 20 or more reports as strong evidence, 3 to 19 as limited, and fewer than 3 as too few to judge. A count like 8 of 8 means the eSIM worked well for 8 of the 8 travelers who reported from here; each provider section says what went wrong for the rest. The Vefru test score is a separate number: our own hands-on test of the provider, run outside Malta, so it says how the provider behaves, not how the network performs here. Local operator prices in the text carry their own dates, and our research ran from 29 August to 26 September 2026; provider ratings, the plan tables and the price-per-GB chart are live and update on their own.

We built the Best group from coverage first (providers with three or more Malta reports, in order of how many travelers said it worked), price second and our own tests third. Four providers qualify on reports, all at 100%. We added eSIM4Travel for its price and help desk even though it has no Malta reports yet. GigSky sits in the Other group because only 1 of its 3 reports said it worked.

Maya Mobile eSIM in our hands

Maya Mobile testing preview Maya Mobile testing speed 1 Maya Mobile testing speed 2 Maya Mobile testing support

Maya Mobile had the strongest Malta record in the traveler reports, and it suits stays of a week or more where you want unlimited data. It worked well for 8 of 8 travelers who reported from Malta (limited confidence, 100%). The stays ran from a one-week plan to a full month, and most reviewers used the same eSIM in other countries too. One wrote in December 2025: "I had no issues with the service."

No review describes a miss in Malta. The two lukewarm ones, a 3-star and a 4-star, praise Malta and fault the same eSIM elsewhere: patchy in Scotland, and almost no connection in Sicily (May 2024). That matters on a Malta and Sicily trip, and our Italy guide covers that leg. Setup hiccups were small: one eSIM did not load at first and was fixed within an hour (July 2025), and an accidental double purchase was sorted quickly (October 2024).

Maya sells only global unlimited plans of 3, 7, 14 and 30 days that cover Malta, with or without cruise coverage, and no country plans. Speeds stay full up to 5 GB a day, then drop. There is nothing for small needs, so a short stay or light use fits a country plan better. Its 30-day plan costs less than the usual 30-day single-country unlimited plan from other providers.

Maya's own Malta page, which we did not open, is listed in search results with a claim of no throttling, and we could not re-verify that (as of September 2026). We also could not confirm which Maltese network it uses. In our Maya Mobile test install took one tap but we had to set the APN and roaming ourselves, and the help desk was slower than most: a bot, then a form, then a person.

Holafly is an Irish eSIM provider built around unlimited data, with trip eSIMs for 200+ destinations. Travelers report it working more often than any other provider we track. Its weak points are speed and price: our test ran at about 30 Mbps on 5G, and its unlimited plans cost more than most.

Holafly eSIM in our hands

Holafly testing outdoor Holafly testing support Holafly testing support 2 Holafly testing speed

Holafly suits travelers who do not want to count data in Malta, but in our test its speed was capped from the first megabyte. It worked well for 5 of 5 travelers who reported from Malta (limited confidence, 100%). The cap is enough for maps, messaging, browsing and streaming, and too slow for large downloads, uploads, cloud backups and laptop work. Hotspot sharing is limited to 1 GB a day [15], and there are no top-ups: you buy a new eSIM instead.

The reports count whether the eSIM connected, so they say nothing about speed. Reviewers call it reliable from landing to departure, and one wrote in May 2026: "A totally reliable eSIM card when in Malta!" Several used it across Italy, Greece, Montenegro and Croatia too. The only hiccup was an early activation problem that the help desk fixed (May 2026).

Holafly says its Malta eSIM connects to Epic, GO and Melita [15], the widest list among the providers whose pages name networks. Its plans are unlimited only, from 3 to 30 days, with a fair-use rule that slows speed for one day at most [15]. Our comparison tool had no Holafly plan for Malta when we exported its data, so there is no plan table here.

Holafly's price is usually higher than other providers' unlimited plans. In our Holafly test install took one tap and 5G came up at once, and the help desk was a bot followed by a quick, helpful person. The QR code can be scanned only once, so a deleted eSIM cannot be reinstalled.

Nomad eSIM in our hands

Nomad testing preview Nomad testing speed 1 Nomad testing speed 2 Nomad testing support

Nomad suits experienced users who can live without a human help desk, and it has the only reports from Gozo and Comino. It worked well for 4 of 4 travelers who reported from Malta (limited confidence, 100%). One reviewer wrote in August 2026 that it "Worked seamlessly" on Gozo, Comino and mainland Malta, including while driving. The others describe an easy setup (June 2026) and an OK connection.

The misses were not in Malta. Two 1-star reviewers rated Nomad for other countries: constant dropouts in Austria, and dropouts in Devon, Cornwall and Wales (June and July 2026). Both say Malta went fine. The weak point in our Nomad test was the help desk: the AI bot looped on a simple question and gave no route to a person.

Nomad's page lists GO and Epic for Malta, not Melita, and tells you to switch to the other network if one is weak [16]. Malta plans run from 1 GB to 50 GB over 3 to 30 days, plus unlimited plans of 3 to 10 days that slow after 2 GB a day. New users get a free 1 GB trial [16]. Prices are slightly below the market average and flat across plan sizes, and a home-screen widget shows your remaining data.

Airalo eSIM in our hands

Airalo testing outdoor Airalo testing speed 1 Airalo testing speed 2 Airalo testing support

Airalo is a simple first eSIM for Malta, and it is the only provider in our files that runs on Epic alone [14]. It worked well for 3 of 3 travelers who reported from Malta (limited confidence, 100%). The reviewers used it on trips that also covered Italy, Sicily, Greece, Turkey or Asia, and they describe easy setup and reliable service.

The one reservation came from a 3-star review (July 2026): "Generally it worked very well" in Malta, but when data ran out the app would not open to add more until the traveler found Wi-Fi. That matches our test, where the app stopped working at zero data. The same reviewer notes the eSIM is data only. Across all countries in our reports, Airalo has the weakest record of the 14 providers, so three Malta reports are a thin base.

Airalo's page names Epic as the primary network [14]. A third-party listing from April 2024 said its Malta eSIM ran on GO, so the network appears to have changed, though that rests on one source. Malta plans run from 1 GB to 50 GB over 3 to 30 days, and unlimited plans slow after 3 GB a day. Only its Discover+ global plan in our comparison tool includes calls and texts.

Price sits at the market average, never the cheapest. Our Airalo test found purchase and install among the easiest of the 14.

eSIM4Travel testing outdoor eSIM4Travel testing speed 1 eSIM4Travel testing speed 2 eSIM4Travel testing support

eSIM4Travel was the cheapest provider in our comparison tool for Malta plans from 3 GB to 20 GB, and it has no traveler reports from Malta yet. That means this place rests on price and our hands-on test, not on Malta evidence. It has the highest Vefru test score of the providers compared here, helped by the best help desk we tested: one click from the bot to a person who solved our problem.

There are no Malta misses to describe, but the test found real downsides. There is no app, so once data runs out you cannot reach the store without Wi-Fi. There is no Google Pay, one eSIM works on one device, and its edge fades for very large plans. Across all countries its record in our reports is fourth best of the 14, from the smallest sample.

Malta plans run from 500 MB to 50 GB over 1 to 30 days, plus unlimited plans of 3 to 30 days that slow after 3 GB a day [17]. Its page names Epic, Melita and GO, the same three-network list as Holafly and Ubigi [17]. The activation window is 90 days and the plan starts on first connection [17]. Hotspot sharing works and top-ups happen on the website.

Its unlimited plans were also the cheapest in our comparison tool for a week. Our eSIM4Travel test found install from a QR code worked at once.

GigSky eSIM in our hands

GigSky has the weakest record of the five providers with three or more Malta reports, so it sits outside the Best group. It worked well for 1 of 3 travelers who reported from Malta (limited confidence, 33%). One plan lost signal at Valletta and gave nothing afterward: "I was randomly disconnected at both Munich airport & Valletta" (May 2026). A cruise plan failed whenever the ship was at sea on an 11-day Mediterranean trip that included Malta (November 2025). The success was a free Visa-cardholder plan that worked in Italy and Malta (July 2026).

GigSky sells Malta plans from 1 GB to 50 GB with validities of 7 to 180 days, a 1-day unlimited pass and separate cruise plans. We could not confirm which Maltese network it uses. In our GigSky test the app stayed partly online after data ran out, so you can buy a new plan without Wi-Fi, and the help desk answered at once. Cruise coverage began about 12 nautical miles offshore and was often limited to port. Its price is among the highest overall, though its entry plans are cheap in many European markets. It fits cruise passengers who stay mostly in port, or anyone with the free Visa plan.

Yesim sells unlimited plans by the day for 1 to 30 days, which are throttled with the limit not stated, plus fixed plans from 500 MB to 30 GB. Our Yesim test found three reasons it ranks here: our plan started at purchase, so buying close to the trip matters, the help desk took 15 to 60 minutes per reply, and the app nags with upsells. Unlimited plans are priced at the market average and fixed country plans are dearer. It may still suit experienced users who want flexible daily unlimited.

ByteSIM has one Malta report, so the count is too few to judge: it worked well for 1 of 1 travelers who reported from Malta. The review is from September 2024 and is about help, not coverage: the help desk guided a traveler through moving the eSIM to a new phone for use in Malta. Our own test found the help desk silent on WhatsApp for 15 minutes, though customers often report fast replies.

ByteSIM's page names Epic and GO for Malta [18]. It sells daily plans from 500 MB to 10 GB a day, fixed totals from 3 GB to 50 GB and unlimited plans, for 1 to 30 days. Daily and total plans slow sharply after the quota, while unlimited plans guarantee HD video under fair use [18]. Our ByteSIM test found a clumsy checkout and a wrapped-website app. It suits experienced users on short trips.

Jetpac eSIM in our hands

Jetpac testing outdoor Jetpac testing speed 1 Jetpac testing speed 2 Jetpac testing support

Jetpac has one Malta report, so the count is too few to judge: it worked well for 1 of 1 travelers who reported from Malta. The review (January 2025, trip in December 2024) covers a global Jetpac eSIM used in ten countries including Malta, with cab apps and WhatsApp working everywhere, and a phone reboot occasionally needed.

Jetpac's Malta page does not name a network. Its Europe plan is listed as GO in our comparison tool. Malta plans run from 3 GB to 40 GB over 1 to 30 days, plus unlimited plans of 3 to 30 days that slow after 3 GB a day. Extras include in-app voice packs, free WhatsApp and Maps after data runs out on larger packs, and a lounge pass for long flight delays. Our Jetpac test found a rough app and a slow site. Its prices are high for 3 GB to 20 GB and at the market average for unlimited.

Ubigi is the travel eSIM brand of Paris operator Transatel, with one reusable eSIM for 200+ destinations. Data was fast in our test, and its 3 GB, 10 GB and 30-day unlimited plans are cheap. Its weak point is support: a chatbot that ends in an email ticket, with no live agent.

Ubigi eSIM in our hands

Ubigi testing preview Ubigi testing speed 1 Ubigi testing speed 2 Ubigi testing support

Ubigi has one Malta report and it is a miss, so the count is too few to judge: it worked well for 0 of 1 travelers who reported from Malta. The August 2026 reviewer bought 10 GB for a week, and the plan expired on day three without a warning. An email from Ubigi said the 10 GB was used in two days, while the app had shown only a few hundred MB. That is a data-counting dispute, not a dead signal.

Ubigi's page lists Epic, GO and Melita for Malta, and a plan must be activated within 6 months of purchase [19]. Country plans run 3 GB, 10 GB and 50 GB over 7 to 30 days, plus unlimited plans of 7, 15 and 30 days with a fair-use limit that is 20 GB on the 7-day plan before speeds drop [19]. It also works on Windows laptops [19]. Our Ubigi test found the weakest help desk of the 14: an emailed ticket went unanswered for 24 hours. The app lets you buy more data at zero balance. It suits tech-savvy travelers, not a first eSIM.

GoMoWorld has no traveler reports from Malta yet. In our test, run in Austria, it was the fastest provider and showed no throttling, so it suits heavy data users. Its page did not name a Maltese network when we checked in August 2026.

Malta plans are a 4 GB plan for 7 days and 40 GB, 75 GB and 500 GB plans for 30 days, with no unlimited plan and no calls. Prices are below the market average. Our GoMoWorld test found three catches: you must press Start or nothing happens, the eSIM is app-only with one account per device, and humans answer only in office hours. GoMoWorld lists a free one-day trial for Malta [21].

Roamless eSIM in our hands

Roamless testing preview Roamless testing speed 1 Roamless testing speed 2 Roamless testing support

Roamless has no traveler reports from Malta yet. It is the only provider whose page publishes the technology per network: GO at 3G, 4G and 5G, and Epic at 3G and 4G only [20]. We found no second source for the Epic detail, so we could not re-verify it (as of September 2026). Roamless states there is no speed limit [20].

It sells Malta plans from 1 GB to 50 GB lasting 30 days, a free trial plan and pay-as-you-go credit that never expires [20], but no unlimited plan. Our Roamless test found the preselected APN did not work and had to be changed by hand, and Google Pay failed at checkout. In-app calls and an optional second number are available. It suits frequent multi-country travelers with light needs.

Saily eSIM in our hands

Saily testing outdoor Saily testing speed 1 Saily testing speed 2 Saily testing support

Saily has no traveler reports from Malta yet. In our tests it had the best app, the smoothest install and the fastest, most helpful help desk, and it is among the dearest providers in the popular destinations in our price grid (Malta is not in that grid). Its page did not name a Maltese network when we checked in August 2026.

Malta plans are 1 GB for 7 days, 3 GB to 20 GB for 30 days, and an unlimited plan of 15 days that slows after 5 GB a day. Calls and texts come only through a US number add-on. The eSIM can be bought only in the app, and in our test the app went offline at zero data. It suits first-timers who value ease over price, as our Saily test shows.

Price per GB in Malta by eSIM Provider

How much does each provider charge per GB in Malta? The chart below compares plans of 1 to 10 GB that last 6 to 14 days, the usual range for a one- or two-week trip. Provider websites show only their own plans, so this side-by-side view is one you would otherwise have to calculate yourself. A shorter bar means a lower price per GB.

Unlimited is not one product in Malta. Maya and Saily slow after 5 GB a day, Airalo, Jetpac and eSIM4Travel after 3 GB a day [17], and Nomad after 2 GB a day [16]. Ubigi sets a fair-use limit, 20 GB on its 7-day plan [19]. Holafly was capped from the start in our test, and Roamless sells no unlimited plan [20]. So compare the speed rule, not only the label.

If you combine Malta with Sicily, compare Malta and Italy plans from 5 GB. Our Greece guide covers the next stop on many Mediterranean routes, and our data guide helps you pick a tier.

Best eSIM for Valletta, Gozo and Comino

Our overall pick, Maya Mobile, has no place-level reports, and no place in Malta has three or more reports in total, so the rows below are signals, not picks.

Where you are goingWhat the reports showOur pick
Gozotoo few reports (Nomad 1/1)Country pick applies, no provider has 3 or more reports here
Cominotoo few reports (Nomad 1/1)Country pick applies, no provider has 3 or more reports here
Vallettatoo few reports (GigSky 0/1)Country pick applies, no provider has 3 or more reports here

On Gozo and Comino, one Nomad reviewer (August 2026) used the eSIM across both islands and mainland Malta, including while driving, with no problems. The regulator found the lowest 5G deployment of its six test regions on Gozo and in the western region, while all three operators had nationwide 4G [1], so 4G speeds are the safe expectation there. Maltese media reporting national statistics say more than half of 2025 visitors went to Gozo or Comino, though that figure rests on a single outlet. In Valletta the only report is a GigSky plan that dropped signal in May 2026, after which the traveler bought Airalo instead.

Local SIM Cards and Operator eSIMs in Malta

A local prepaid pack gives more data for the money than a travel eSIM once a trip passes a few days, but buying one is harder than in most countries. In our reading, a travel eSIM fits trips under about four days and late arrivals, and GO's prepaid eSIM fits a week or more. GO is the only operator that sells visitors a prepaid eSIM without a store visit, through its app, for a new number [8]. Epic sells eSIMs in store only, with a EUR 10 charge for the swap [7]. Melita sells a prepaid eSIM, but registration needs a shop visit with ID and the QR code works once [11] [12].

Current packs, each valid for 28 days (prices as of August 2026):

  • Epic: Data Pack, 4 GB for EUR 6.99; Talk Pack, EUR 5.99, with 500 MB, unlimited minutes to Epic mobile and fixed numbers in Malta and 100 local SMS; Value Pack, 10 GB for EUR 10.99 with 200 extra minutes [6]. A promo listing shows EUR 4.99 for a new customer's first six packs, which we could not re-verify.
  • GO: Smart S, 1 GB for EUR 5.99; Smart M, 15 GB for EUR 11.99 with 250 minutes and 250 SMS; Smart Unlimited, unlimited local data for EUR 15.99. 5G is free on all GO plans, prepaid included [9].
  • Melita: the Pockit Pass comes in three sizes. The regulator's July to September 2025 price review lists their prices, but we could not confirm the data in each size, so we leave the figures out. Melita prepaid has no 5G [10].

Epic and Melita say their listed prices include VAT but exclude excise tax [6] [13], and we could not find the rate. SIM registration is required by Maltese law [4]. Epic asks for an ID card or passport in store [7] and Melita for a valid ID in a shop [12]. A passport is enough for non-EU visitors, and no operator page we read asked for proof of a Maltese address.

Third-party sources say Epic runs a shop at Malta International Airport, but they disagree on where it is and when it opens, and we could not confirm it from an official source (as of September 2026). A single counter with limited hours may not cover early or late arrivals, so data working when you land has value. Our guide to eSIM versus a physical SIM covers the trade-offs.

Mobile Networks in Malta

Epic had the best results in the regulator's latest network test, GO was a close second and Melita third, but all three provided nationwide 4G [1]. The Malta Communications Authority drove and walked roughly 1,500 km across six regions in December 2025 and published the results on 16 July 2026 [2]. Epic also came first in the previous round [3]. GO beat Epic on browsing and gaming and tied it on video streaming [1].

The regulator tested on top postpaid plans and says the results may not match a typical user's experience [2], and a travel eSIM roams under a wholesale deal that may not include the same technology. Epic says it targets 5G at high-demand areas [5]. GO says 5G is free on all its plans [9]. Melita's 5G runs on bands 1 and 78 only and is not available on prepaid [10]. A new benchmark is due in the fourth quarter of 2026 and will re-rank the three [1].

Here is which provider uses which network, as each provider's own Malta page says:

  • Epic only: Airalo [14].
  • GO and Epic: Nomad [16] and ByteSIM [18]. Roamless lists GO with 5G and Epic at 3G and 4G only [20], which we could not re-verify.
  • All three networks: Holafly [15], Ubigi [19] and eSIM4Travel [17].
  • Not named on the provider's page when we checked in August 2026: Saily, Jetpac and GoMoWorld. We could not verify Yesim, GigSky, Global YO or Maya.

An Epic listing does not guarantee Epic's 5G, since only Roamless states the tier. Several of these eSIMs can switch between networks, as our guide on eSIMs with several networks explains, and Nomad tells you to switch by hand if one is weak [16]. For Gozo and the west, plan on 4G speeds whichever network you use.

How to Set Up an eSIM for Malta

  1. Check that your phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM. Our guides cover the iPhone and Samsung steps.
  2. Buy and install before you fly, on home Wi-Fi. In our tests most plans start on first connection, not at install. Yesim started at purchase, and GoMoWorld needs a manual Start. Ubigi plans must be activated within 6 months [19].
  3. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM and set it as your data line. Maya needed its APN set by hand in our test, and Roamless needed its APN changed.
  4. When you land, wait a minute for the network. If the signal is weak, switch networks by hand where the plan allows it.
  5. Top up before data runs out. In our tests most apps stop working at zero data, but GigSky and Ubigi let you buy more, and Holafly has no top-ups.
  6. If data does not connect, our troubleshooting guide lists the checks.

Calls and SMS in Malta

Malta's calling code is +356, and no Malta plan in our comparison tool comes with a Maltese number. They are data only, so calls go through WhatsApp or similar apps. Airalo's Discover+ global plan is the only one in our comparison tool that includes calls and texts, and in our test it came with a US number. Saily sells a US number add-on, Roamless and Jetpac sell in-app calling, and Global YO routes calls through a separate app. For a Maltese number you need a local prepaid SIM from Epic, GO or Melita, which includes local minutes and SMS.

Free eSIM Data for Malta

Three providers list free Malta trials, and one free plan came with a Visa card. Roamless lists a free Malta plan that runs 30 days from activation [20]. Nomad gives new users a free 1 GB trial [16]. GoMoWorld lists a free one-day trial [21]. A GigSky reviewer used a free 10 GB, 15-day plan that came with a Visa card and says it worked in Italy and Malta (July 2026). Trials are small, so they cover a phone test and the first hours after landing, not a whole trip. Terms are as of August 2026, and our free eSIM guide lists more.

Frequently Asked Questions About eSIMs in Malta

Which is the best eSIM for Malta?
Maya Mobile had the best record in traveler reports from Malta: 8 of 8 said it worked well, on stays from one week to a month. It sells only unlimited plans of 3 days or more, so a short trip or light use fits a country plan better. Holafly also had 5 of 5, but its speeds were capped in our test. Compare current plans with (eSIM Comparison).
What is the cheapest eSIM for Malta?
eSIM4Travel was the cheapest provider for Malta plans of 3 GB to 20 GB in our comparison tool, and it is usually the cheapest overall. It has no traveler reports from Malta yet and no app, so you cannot top up without Wi-Fi once data runs out. Global YO is usually the next cheapest, with 2 of 2 reports. Check live prices with (eSIM Comparison).
How much data do I need for Malta?
It depends on how you use your phone, not on Malta itself. Maps, messaging and social media use little, while streaming, video calls and a shared hotspot use much more. If you do not want to count, Maya and Holafly sell unlimited plans, though they slow down in different ways. Work out your own number with (Travel Data Calculator).
Malta SIM card for tourists: local SIM or travel eSIM?
A local prepaid SIM gives more data for the money on a week-long stay, but it needs ID and, at Epic and Melita, a shop visit. GO is the only operator that sells a prepaid eSIM through its app without a store visit. A travel eSIM needs no ID and works when you land, which suits trips under about four days. For the trade-offs between formats, see (eSIM vs SIM: Is eSIM Worth It? Comparison + Guide | Vefru).
Does an eSIM work on Gozo and Comino?
Yes, based on limited evidence: one Nomad reviewer reported in August 2026 that it worked seamlessly on Gozo, Comino and mainland Malta. All three networks have nationwide 4G, but the regulator found the lowest 5G deployment on Gozo and in the western region, so expect 4G speeds there. We have no other traveler reports from either island.
Can I get a Maltese phone number with an eSIM?
No Malta plan in our comparison tool comes with a Maltese number. The plans are data only, so calls go through WhatsApp or similar apps, and a few providers sell in-app calling or foreign numbers. For a Maltese number you need a local prepaid SIM, which includes local minutes and requires ID registration.

Summary: the best eSIM for Malta

Based on 30 traveler reports from Malta and our tests, Maya Mobile is the best option for stays of a week or more (8 of 8), though it sells nothing for short trips. Holafly (5 of 5) uses all three Maltese networks, but its speed was capped from the start in our test. Nomad (4 of 4) had the only Gozo and Comino report, but its help desk was unreachable in our test. Airalo (3 of 3) is the simple first eSIM and runs only on Epic, but its app needs Wi-Fi once data runs out. eSIM4Travel is usually the cheapest in our comparison tool, with no Malta reports yet and no app.

A local SIM is the other route. GO's prepaid eSIM is the only one a visitor can set up without a shop visit, and it gives more data for the money on a longer stay. Overall, the best eSIM for Malta depends on trip length: a travel eSIM for short stays and late arrivals, and GO's prepaid eSIM for a week or more if you can handle SIM registration.
