Key takeaways

Across 166 traveler reports from Ireland and our own tests, the best option for most trips is Maya Mobile: it worked well for 26 of 27 travelers who reported from Ireland, rural drives included, with no speed cap in our test. Holafly had the only perfect record, 20 of 20, and is the Dublin pick, but its speed was capped from the start in our test. Nomad (23 of 27) suits experienced users on fixed data, with misses in Donegal. Ubigi (17 of 20) has the cheapest 30-day unlimited here but the worst help desk we tested. eSIM4Travel is the cheapest for Ireland in our comparison, with one report so far.

The best eSIM for Ireland depends on one fact more than any other: the Republic shares a land border with Northern Ireland, and an Ireland-only eSIM stops working the moment you cross it. Several travelers in the reports below lost service near the border, or bought a UK plan and found it did not cover the Republic. If your trip includes Belfast or the Giant's Causeway, a Europe plan is the safer choice, and this article says which providers handle the crossing well.

Coverage inside the Republic is good on paper and patchy in practice. All three networks advertise 4G population coverage above 99%, yet ComReg, the regulator, found that 33% of people it surveyed in 2025 had lost signal in the previous month, with rural respondents worse off [3]. The Wild Atlantic Way (Connemara, the Iveragh and Dingle peninsulas, west Donegal, the Aran Islands) is where the travelers in our reports hit dead zones. Vodafone switched off its 3G network in October 2024 and eir starts switching its 3G off from October 2026 [4] [5], so a phone that falls back to 3G will soon find nothing.

Buying locally is simple: Ireland does not require ID or registration for a prepaid SIM, as ComReg itself states [6], and WH Smith in Dublin Airport Terminal 1 sells Three and Vodafone SIMs [7]. We compared 166 traveler reports across 14 providers, our own hands-on tests and the current operator offers. The picks, the places and the plan line-ups are below.

Best eSIM Providers for Ireland

eSIM plans in Ireland at a glance

How well each provider's eSIM works in Ireland

The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in Ireland. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

How we got these numbers: we read 166 public customer reviews that mention Ireland or a place in it, published between April 2024 and August 2026, and counted a report as "worked" when the reviewer said the eSIM connected, even with small hiccups. We treat 20 or more reports as strong evidence, 3 to 19 as limited, and fewer than 3 as too few to judge. A count like 23 of 25 means the eSIM worked well for 23 of the 25 travelers who reported from here; each provider section says what went wrong for the rest. The Vefru test score is a separate number: our own hands-on test of the provider, run outside Ireland, so it says how the provider behaves, not how the network performs here. Local operator prices in the text were checked on 25 September 2026; provider ratings, the plan tables and the price-per-GB chart are live and update on their own.

We chose the Best group on traveler reports first, price position second and our hands-on tests third: four providers have strong evidence (20 or more reports) and worked for at least 85% of travelers, and eSIM4Travel joins them as the cheapest provider for Ireland in our comparison with a human help desk, on one report so far. Airalo also has strong evidence but worked for only 15 of 25 travelers, so it opens the next section. Holafly had the best record, but Maya Mobile is within four points of it on 27 reports and had no speed cap in our test, which is why Maya Mobile is the overall pick.

Maya Mobile eSIM in our hands

Maya Mobile testing preview Maya Mobile testing speed 1 Maya Mobile testing speed 2 Maya Mobile testing support

Maya Mobile is the best option for most trips to Ireland: one global unlimited plan that worked well for 26 of 27 travelers who reported from Ireland (96%, strong evidence), with no speed cap from the first megabyte in our test. The successes cover the whole country, not just the capital: a road trip "pretty much all over the country", a 10-day solo trip, six weeks across the UK and Ireland, a traveler who was online the moment she landed in Dublin, and one who wrote in May 2025: "Excellent coverage in rural areas." Many used the same eSIM on through the UK, France, Switzerland, Costa Rica or Mexico.

The one miss was total: a traveler in July 2024 could not get data at all for her whole stay in Dublin, after the same eSIM had worked in Switzerland; Maya refunded her. Two reports count as worked but matter at the border. One traveler on an Ireland-only plan lost service between Northern Ireland and the Republic and needed a free upgrade to the Europe plan (May 2024); another lost service crossing into Northern Ireland and waited a few hours after returning for the eSIM to reconnect (Jul 2024). A third found data patchy and slow at times in rural Ireland and put it down to rural Ireland, not Maya. In the UK the eSIM once kept selecting Vodafone when Vodafone had no service, so if data stops, a manual network switch is the first thing to try.

What sets Maya Mobile apart is the plan line-up. As of October 2026 our comparison tool lists only global unlimited plans for 3, 7, 14 or 30 days, covering Ireland among 178 countries, with 5 GB a day at full speed before the plan slows, and a daily reset; hotspot is included and the eSIM arrives by email as a QR code, so no app is needed. Price position: the cheapest 30-day global unlimited plan in our comparison, below every provider's usual 30-day single-country unlimited price, but there is nothing small, so a two-day trip pays for three. Maya does not name its Irish network on its page; in a public reply to a 2024 review it said its plans use three Irish networks, which we could not confirm. The help desk was middling in our test: a WhatsApp bot, a form, then a human after about ten minutes with template answers. Our Maya Mobile review has the full speed and help desk test; the plan is at Maya Mobile.

Holafly is an Irish eSIM provider built around unlimited data, with trip eSIMs for 200+ destinations. Travelers report it working more often than any other provider we track. Its weak points are speed and price: our test ran at about 30 Mbps on 5G, and its unlimited plans cost more than most.

Holafly eSIM in our hands

Holafly testing outdoor Holafly testing support Holafly testing support 2 Holafly testing speed

Holafly had the only perfect record in Ireland: it worked well for all 20 travelers who reported (100%, strong evidence), including five who reported from Dublin, one from Dublin Airport, one on the bus from Dublin to Galway, one in Limerick, and several whose trips crossed into Belfast. But in our test Holafly's speed was capped from the start, before any data was used, the lowest speed result of the 14 providers. In practice that is enough for maps, messaging, browsing and streaming (one traveler watched YouTube on the Dublin to Galway bus in June 2026 without a stutter), and slow for large downloads, uploads, cloud backups and laptop work.

Even the weaker reports connected. One traveler in August 2026 called the data poor in Dublin and across Northern Ireland compared with Italy and France. Another found his phone switched to Spanish and maps placing him in Spain, a sign of the eSIM's non-Irish IP address rather than a dead connection. The most common complaint was setup: a family with older iPhones needed extra work to activate (May 2026), a Limerick user needed the help desk to find a settings mistake (Aug 2026), and an Irish reviewer found the app unavailable in Ireland in May 2026. An Android user's tip from June 2026: in the Holafly eSIM settings, turn roaming on for all carriers, or data will not start.

Holafly says its Ireland eSIM connects to 3 Ireland and Vodafone Ireland [14], two of the three networks, and as of September 2026 it also lists a separate Northern Ireland eSIM, so a trip through both needs the Europe plan the travelers above used. As of October 2026 our comparison tool lists Ireland plans of 3 to 30 days, unlimited only, with the hotspot capped at 1 GB a day [14], no top-ups (you buy a new eSIM when a plan ends) and a free 1 GB every 30 days if you keep the eSIM installed. Price position: the most expensive unlimited offer in about half of the countries in our comparison. Holafly suits travelers who want to stop thinking about data and will not miss speed; our Holafly review has the speed test, and the Ireland plans are at Holafly.

Nomad eSIM in our hands

Nomad testing preview Nomad testing speed 1 Nomad testing speed 2 Nomad testing support

Nomad is the pick for experienced users who want a fixed-data Ireland plan at a fair price and will not need the help desk. It worked well for 23 of 27 travelers who reported from Ireland (85%, strong evidence). The successes describe 5G in the Republic that beat an Irish resident's home provider (Aug 2026), online within seconds of landing at Dublin Airport (Jun 2026), clean hand-overs on trips through Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Italy and Austria, and a reviewer who wrote in August 2026: "The coverage in the rural areas of Ireland was fantastic."

The four misses were dead zones and outright failures, not setup. One traveler had no reception in Donegal until Buncrana (Jul 2026); one found it did not work in Ireland at all after a fine week in Norway (Jun 2026); one had serious network trouble in Ireland after no issues in Iceland (May 2026); and one found connectivity poor even in towns across the UK and Ireland (May 2026), to the point of being unable to call emergency services when a plan had expired while still showing bars. Two more reports count as worked but matter for planning: a traveler bought Nomad's UK plan and only later saw that it did not cover Ireland (May 2026), and a family found the data drained faster than with another provider. Several happy reviewers add that coverage far from towns was weak, which one called expected.

Nomad's Ireland plans, as of October 2026, run from 1 GB to 50 GB and unlimited for 3 to 10 days at 2 GB a day before slowing, with a Europe plan in the same sizes for trips that cross into Northern Ireland. Nomad's own blog says its Ireland eSIM uses Vodafone, Three and eir; the Ireland plans are listed with 3 in our comparison tool. The app has a home-screen data widget and lets you switch carrier by hand, which is the fix when one network drops out. Price position: slightly below market across all sizes, though dearer in Europe than in the Americas. The main drawback is the help desk: in our test the bot looped and never handed us to a human, as our Nomad review shows; plans are at Nomad.

Ubigi is the travel eSIM brand of Paris operator Transatel, with one reusable eSIM for 200+ destinations. Data was fast in our test, and its 3 GB, 10 GB and 30-day unlimited plans are cheap. Its weak point is support: a chatbot that ends in an email ticket, with no live agent.

Ubigi eSIM in our hands

Ubigi testing preview Ubigi testing speed 1 Ubigi testing speed 2 Ubigi testing support

Ubigi is the value pick for road trips and longer stays: it worked well for 17 of 20 travelers who reported from Ireland (85%, strong evidence), and it has the cheapest 30-day unlimited plan in our comparison. The successes are driving trips: "A week driving around in Ireland and had signal everywhere with good speed" (Aug 2026), a 12-day pilgrimage on less than 5 GB, three weeks across Ireland and Scotland, a trip through Ireland, Northern Ireland and Cornwall, and a cruise along the Irish and French coasts.

The three misses point west and to the unlimited plan. One traveler could not get the eSIM to connect at all in the west of Ireland (May 2026). A couple on the 15-day unlimited plan both lost data on day two (Jun 2026) and could not open the app offline to see why. A third gave up after two unreliable weeks across Ireland and Scotland and bought another provider's eSIM (May 2026). Among the reports that count as worked, one traveler on a Europe regional eSIM saw only one or two bars across Ireland (Apr 2026), and one wife's eSIM barely worked while her husband's worked fine on the same trip (Jul 2026), which Ubigi put down to device settings. One more bought the UK plan and found it did not cover Ireland.

Ubigi says its Ireland plans use eir and Three [15], the network with the best 5G reach and the network with the best speeds according to Opensignal's January 2026 report. Plans as of October 2026: 3 GB, 10 GB and 50 GB, plus unlimited for 7, 15 or 30 days with a fair-use limit of 20 GB on the 7-day plan before speeds drop [15]; there is no 5 GB or 20 GB size. Two things set it apart: you can buy more data with a zero balance, and you can choose a local or home IP. Price position: just below market on fixed data and the cheapest 30-day unlimited in our comparison. The drawbacks are the clunkiest site and app of the 14 and the worst help desk outcome in our test, a ticket unanswered after 24 hours, as our Ubigi review documents; plans are at Ubigi.

eSIM4Travel testing outdoor eSIM4Travel testing speed 1 eSIM4Travel testing speed 2 eSIM4Travel testing support

eSIM4Travel is the cheapest provider for Ireland in our comparison at every size from 2 GB to 10 GB, with the best help desk we tested, but only one traveler has reported from Ireland so far (1 of 1, too few to judge). That reviewer, writing in September 2024, had used it across seven European countries including Ireland since May 2024 and found that choosing the network by hand often gave better reception. One report is not evidence of coverage, so this is a price pick for travelers happy to install at home.

The plans as of October 2026: Ireland plans from 100 MB day passes to 50 GB over 1 to 30 days, listed as Vodafone and Three in our comparison tool, plus unlimited for 3 to 30 days at 3 GB a day before slowing. Its own blog describes a Three and Vodafone blend; we could not check that on an official page. A Best Europe plan covers 41 countries for trips that cross into Northern Ireland. Hotspot is allowed and a queued top-up starts when the current plan expires.

In our hands-on test (run outside Ireland) the help desk went from a short bot to a human in one click, who solved the problem and suggested switching network; the eSIM arrived by email as a QR code, installed in a minute and worked right away. The downsides: no app, no Google Pay, and once the data runs out you cannot reach the shop without Wi-Fi. Our eSIM4Travel review has the details; the Ireland plans are at eSIM4Travel.

We tested every provider below and all of them sell Ireland plans. They sit here because the Ireland record is weak (Airalo), because fewer than 20 travelers have reported (GoMoWorld, Jetpac, Roamless, GigSky, Saily), or because almost nobody has reported yet (Yesim, Global YO, ByteSIM).

Airalo eSIM in our hands

Airalo testing outdoor Airalo testing speed 1 Airalo testing speed 2 Airalo testing support

Airalo worked well for only 15 of 25 travelers who reported from Ireland (60%, strong evidence), the weakest record of any provider with strong evidence here, so it is not a pick despite being the biggest name. The ten failures fall into two groups. Regional Europe eSIMs that would not activate in Ireland (three travelers between November 2025 and August 2026, one of whom bought the eSIM twice). And Ireland plans that never connected: "Bought a package for Ireland and woke up in Galway and no data" (Jun 2026), no reception with full bars in the middle of Ireland with children and no maps (Jun 2026), a week in Ireland without getting it to work on an iPhone (Jul 2026), an eSIM that would not activate at all so the traveler bought a SIM at the airport (Aug 2026), and one returning user who hit the same failure in Ireland in September 2025, December 2025 and July 2026. Even a happy reviewer mentioned an Airalo outage in Ireland, and reception in Northern Ireland was called poor. The successes were mostly multi-country trips where Ireland was one stop, plus one reviewer for whom it never failed even in remote parts of Ireland (Aug 2026).

Airalo's Ireland plans, branded Fáilte, run 1 GB to 50 GB and unlimited for 3 to 30 days at 3 GB a day before slowing, on Three only [13]; the Discover+ global plan adds calls and texts with a US number. Our test found purchase and installation among the easiest and no throttling, but Airalo has the lowest reliability of the 14 across all countries in our report data, and its price position is at market, never cheap, as our Airalo review explains. It suits travelers who already use Airalo elsewhere and want one app; for Ireland the reports favour a single-country plan over a regional one, bought at Airalo.

GoMoWorld eSIM in our hands

GoMoWorld testing preview GoMoWorld testing speed 1 GoMoWorld testing speed 2 GoMoWorld testing support

GoMoWorld, the travel brand of the Irish operator eir, worked well for all 16 travelers whose reviews mention Ireland (100%, limited evidence), but most of those reviewers are Irish residents who used it abroad and name Ireland as home, which GoMoWorld's terms do not allow for home-country use anyway. Only two describe connecting in Ireland itself: a South African visitor who connected easily (Jul 2026) and a traveler who landed in Dublin, could not connect until she pressed Start in the app, then rated the data good (Aug 2026). The one place complaint on the island was poor coverage in Armagh, in Northern Ireland (Dec 2025). The evidence for visitors is thin, which is why it is not a pick.

Plans as of October 2026: four Ireland sizes (4 GB for 7 days; 40 GB, 75 GB and 500 GB for 30 days) and a Europe plan that includes the UK, so a border crossing is covered. It is app-only (no QR by email), one account per device, and a plan does nothing until you press Start or schedule it, the most common cause of "it does not work". GoMoWorld does not name its Irish network on its page, as of September 2026. In our test it was the fastest provider and never throttled, but the human help desk keeps office hours, as our GoMoWorld review shows. Price position: below market, best from 5 GB up. A fit for heavy data users who install early, at GoMoWorld.

Jetpac eSIM in our hands

Jetpac testing outdoor Jetpac testing speed 1 Jetpac testing speed 2 Jetpac testing support

Jetpac worked well for all 5 travelers who reported from Ireland (100%, limited evidence): a Scotland and Ireland trip in April 2024 where the reviewer's data beat her husband's other eSIM, an Ireland trip the reviewer was very happy with (Jan 2026), and two whose activation problems the help desk fixed quickly, one of them at the start of his "Ireland adventure" (Aug 2025). The only one-star review in the set is about Beijing, not Ireland. Five reports are too few to rank it above providers with 20 or more.

Ireland plans as of October 2026: 3 GB to 40 GB and unlimited for 3 to 30 days at 3 GB a day before slowing, all listed with 5G; the Europe unlimited plans list eir (under its old Meteor name) and Vodafone in our comparison tool, while a competitor site reports Three for the Ireland plan. Extras: WhatsApp, Maps and Uber keep working after the data runs out on packs of 3 GB and up, in-app voice packs, and free lounge access if your flight is delayed by an hour. Price position: at market for unlimited, dear for 3 to 20 GB. Our Jetpac review found the site and app rough and the help desk slow; plans are at Jetpac.

Roamless is a US provider built around one global eSIM for 203 destinations, paid with pay-as-you-go credit. It was fast and unthrottled in our test, and travelers report it working in 91% of cases. Roamless eSIM in our hands

Roamless testing preview Roamless testing speed 1 Roamless testing speed 2 Roamless testing support

Roamless worked well for all 3 travelers who reported from Ireland (100%, limited evidence): one moved from Ireland to Scotland to Zurich on one eSIM without a hitch (Oct 2025), one struggled only on a cruise across the Irish Sea and was otherwise happy (Apr 2026), and one needed help she could not find while switching back to a US carrier at the end of an Ireland trip (Aug 2026). Three reports are the minimum we count as limited evidence, so it stays out of the Best group.

Roamless is one global eSIM with pay-as-you-go credit at a flat rate per GB, 30-day Ireland plans from 1 GB to 200 GB, no-expiry Ireland plans and a free trial plan in Ireland; the Ireland plans are listed with eir in our comparison tool, while a competitor site reports Three. No unlimited, no throttling claimed, unlimited hotspot, VoIP calls and an optional second number. Price position: second cheapest for 1 GB, dear from 10 GB up. In our test the preset APN did not work until we picked the Proximus one, and speed tests failed until we switched network by hand, as our Roamless review describes. Good for light multi-country users, at Roamless.

GigSky eSIM in our hands

GigSky testing outdoor GigSky testing speed 1 GigSky testing speed 2 GigSky testing support

GigSky worked well for 14 of 16 travelers who reported from Ireland (88%, limited evidence), several of them on free plans from their Visa card. The successes: strong data in Dublin and Galway (May 2026), a crossing into Northern Ireland with no trouble switching networks (May 2026), 12-day trips on 3 GB, and one traveler who was the only one in her group able to stay online (Jun 2026). The two misses were a traveler who could not get online in Ireland or England in August 2025, and one who saw only slow speeds across five countries in December 2025. A third report, counted as worked, got little or no signal at sea or on land on a cruise from Ireland to Iceland (May 2025), which counts against GigSky's cruise plans more than its Ireland plan.

Ireland plans as of October 2026: 1 GB to 50 GB, including 20 GB for 90 days and 50 GB for 180 days, plus a 1-day unlimited pass; a competitor site reports Three as the network. Its app stays partly online when data runs out, so you can buy more without Wi-Fi, and the help desk answered at once in our test, as our GigSky review shows. Price position: the most expensive provider overall in our comparison, around the market average for Ireland. For a cruise from Dublin or Cork, its cruise plans are the reason to choose it, at GigSky.

Saily eSIM in our hands

Saily testing outdoor Saily testing speed 1 Saily testing speed 2 Saily testing support

Saily worked well for 4 of 5 travelers who reported from Ireland (80%, limited evidence), but the detail is thinner than the count: two of the positive reports were written before departure, and one came from a traveler using it in Ireland after Thailand (May 2026). The miss was a traveler on the unlimited Ireland and GB plan from May 2026 who found it laggy in cities and regretted renewing; another, counted as worked, called it inconsistent across Ireland, the UK and Scandinavia (Aug 2026). So the Ireland evidence is thinner than five reports suggest.

Saily's Ireland page names no network (checked September 2026) [16]; a human agent reportedly named eir, Three and Vodafone. Plans as of October 2026: 1 GB for 7 days, 3 GB to 20 GB for 30 days, and unlimited for 15 days at 5 GB a day before slowing, with a 180-day activation window and an optional US number [16]. In our test it had the best-polished app and installation and, with eSIM4Travel, the best help desk, as our Saily review shows, but its price position is among the most expensive in the places people travel. A good first eSIM if price is not the issue, at Saily.

Yesim has one report from Ireland and it did not work (0 of 1, too few to judge); the review text is not in our set, so we cannot say what failed. A third-party wiki reports Vodafone, Three and eir as its Irish networks; Yesim's own page does not say, so we could not confirm it.

Plans as of October 2026: unlimited sold by the day for any length from 1 to 30 days, fixed 1 GB to 30 GB for 30 days, and Europe and global bundles that are better value than the country plans. The unlimited plans are throttled at a limit Yesim does not publish. Its Irish network is not named on its page and we could not confirm it.

Plans as of October 2026: Ireland plans from 1 GB for 3 days to 100 GB for 60 days, Ireland day plans at 3 GB a day, and Europe Explorer plans across 42 countries. Price position: the second cheapest provider in our comparison, and cheaper the bigger the plan. Purchase is app-only, the app dies at zero data, a deleted eSIM cannot be reinstalled, and the help desk replied with a template after ten minutes in our test, as our Global YO review shows. Providers travelers report from Ireland that we have not tested

Simify, which we have not tested and which is not in our comparison tool, appears in traveler reviews from Ireland, mostly positive about UK and Ireland trips, with one 2024 complaint about a plan that did not include Ireland and another about calls that failed; we have no count for it.

Best eSIM Plans for Ireland

Price per GB in Ireland by eSIM Provider

How much does each provider charge per GB in Ireland? The chart below compares plans of 1 to 10 GB that last 6 to 14 days, the usual range for a one- or two-week trip. Provider websites show only their own plans, so this side-by-side view is one you would otherwise have to work out yourself. A shorter bar means a lower price per GB.

Generated 29.10.2026 08:14

The tables below are live and sorted by tier. For a week of maps, messaging and photos, the 2 GB and 5 GB tiers cover most travelers; how much data you need for a trip has the maths. Streaming and hotspot use push you to 10 GB or 20 GB, and for stays near a month the unlimited tier is worth checking against the Ubigi and Maya Mobile sections above, because fair-use rules differ more than prices do. If your trip continues to Belfast, Scotland or England, a Europe plan is the simplest answer: compare plans that cover both Ireland and the UK, and read our UK eSIM guide for the other side of the border.

Best eSIM for Dublin, Galway and the Wild Atlantic Way

Most reports name only "Ireland", so place-level evidence is thin: Dublin has 9 reports, Galway 3, and the west coast scattered single reports that all describe failures. The table lists every place with reports; counts are raw, provider by provider.

Best eSIM for Dublin

Holafly is the Dublin pick: all five Dublin reports worked, from the moment of landing at the airport, in the city, and on the bus out to Galway, with the caveat that its speed was capped from the start in our test, so it suits maps, messaging and streaming rather than big uploads. The runners-up tell you what can go wrong. Maya Mobile's one Dublin miss was a traveler in July 2024 whose eSIM never connected during her whole stay, after working in Switzerland, while two other Maya Mobile users connected the moment they landed and reported good coverage across the city. GigSky's one Dublin report called the data strong in both Dublin and Galway.

Two more reports describe Dublin Airport itself: a Nomad user was online seconds after landing (Jun 2026), and a Holafly user connected at the terminal (Jul 2026). The airport failures in the set belong to Airalo (an eSIM that would not activate, so the traveler bought a SIM at the airport, Aug 2026) and to GoMoWorld, where the plan did not connect until the traveler pressed Start in the app. If you land without data, the terminal Wi-Fi is the fallback for fixing settings, and WH Smith in Terminal 1 sells Three and Vodafone SIMs [7].

Best eSIM for Galway

No provider has three Galway reports, so the country pick, Maya Mobile, applies. The three reports split cleanly: Holafly streamed video all the way from Dublin to Galway (Jun 2026), GigSky found data strong in Galway (May 2026), and Airalo's Ireland plan delivered no data at all on the morning the traveler woke up in Galway (Jun 2026). Galway is also the gateway to Connemara and the Aran Islands, where no traveler has reported yet; ComReg's own map is the only per-route check for that stretch [1].

Best eSIM for the Wild Atlantic Way and Donegal

Every west-coast report in the set is a failure, and they are spread across providers, so this is a network problem, not a provider problem. A Nomad user had no reception in Donegal until Buncrana (Jul 2026), and a Ubigi user could not get the eSIM to connect anywhere in the west of Ireland (May 2026). Two Airalo users lost data in the middle of the country and in Galway. ComReg's 2025 survey found rural respondents lose signal more often than urban ones [3], and no operator publishes a geographic coverage figure. For a drive along the Wild Atlantic Way, the two providers with the most rural successes in the reports are Maya Mobile ("excellent coverage in rural areas", May 2025) and Nomad ("fantastic" rural coverage, Aug 2026, but the Donegal gap above), and a provider that lets you switch network by hand (Nomad, eSIM4Travel, Roamless) gives you a second chance when one network drops out. Offline maps for the whole route are the sensible backup; one Nomad user downloaded them for her entire road trip.

Local SIM Cards and Operator eSIMs in Ireland

A local prepaid SIM or operator eSIM beats a travel eSIM for stays near four weeks and for anyone who needs an Irish number; for a week or two of data, a travel eSIM installed at home is simpler and the price gap is small. Ireland requires no ID or registration for a prepaid SIM: ComReg states that Ireland is one of only a few countries that does not require prepay SIM registration, and instead recommends a voluntary identity check that operators may apply themselves [6]. The offers below were checked on 25 Sep 2026 and include VAT.

  • Three Visit Ireland 5GB: €15.00 for 7 days, 5 GB and 50 minutes of calls within Ireland, as an instant eSIM with a new Irish number; Visit Ireland 25GB: €25.00 for 28 days, 25 GB, 250 minutes and texts plus 50 international minutes [7]. Three's All You Can Eat Data prepay is €20.00 for 28 days, unlimited within the Republic only, with tethering prohibited [8]. Three's page lists "Ireland and EU Data" on the tourist plans while its terms say use only in the Republic; as of September 2026 that contradiction was unresolved, so a border trip needs a direct check.
  • Vodafone Data Unlimited 5G: €20.00 for 4 weeks, unlimited 5G data, 100 minutes and texts to any network, 100 international minutes and unlimited Vodafone-to-Vodafone calls, as a physical SIM or eSIM [9]. Vodafone's pay-as-you-go page said in September 2026 that an eSIM could be ordered online only when porting a number, while its tourist page routes visitors to order online, so an eSIM may mean a store visit.
  • eir Prepay Simplicity: from €10.00, with the €20.00 tier for 28 days giving unlimited domestic 5G data plus calls and texts; you opt in by texting the plan code to 50104, then top up [11]. eir's eSIM for prepay is reported but we could not confirm it on its page.

Where to buy: WH Smith in Dublin Airport Terminal 1 stocks Three and Vodafone SIMs, and SIM Local vending machines stand in Terminals 1 and 2 [7]. Vodafone warns that plan prices may differ in Dublin Airport [9], and we could not confirm the airport prices, so a city-centre store or a pre-arrival online order is cheaper. Three's eSIM activates on compatible phones or arrives as a QR code by email, and tops up online, in the My3 app or by calling 1744 [7].

The trade-off in one line: a local SIM wins for a month, for calls, or for a number locals can ring, and a travel eSIM wins for short trips, for keeping your home number active, and for a trip that crosses into Northern Ireland, where the Irish prepay plans stop at the border too.

Mobile Networks in Ireland

Ireland has three mobile networks, Three, Vodafone and eir, and on the independent measurements Three is the best all-round choice for a touring visitor, eir the best for 5G reach, and Vodafone level with Three on coverage but behind on everything else. According to Opensignal's January 2026 report, Three won every speed, consistency and reliability measure, Three and Vodafone tied on overall coverage experience with eir last, and eir led on 5G availability and time spent on 5G. That matters for a travel eSIM because most of them ride Three, and almost none ride eir.

Each operator's own claims are high: eir says its network covers 99.9% of the population with 4G and 99% with 5G from about 2,670 sites [12], Three's figures, as reported in the press for the first half of 2026, are 99.4% and 97%, and Vodafone says more than 99% on the island. None publishes a geographic figure, which is the one a Wild Atlantic Way driver needs. ComReg's 2025 consumer survey found a third of respondents had lost signal in the previous month, rural respondents more often [3]; by the first quarter of 2026 Ireland had 10.9 million mobile subscriptions, 3.1 million of them on 5G [2]. ComReg's coverage map predicts coverage in 10 m squares for every network, including the MVNOs, and is the only per-route check [1]; Vodafone publishes its own map too [10].

Which provider rides which network, as of September 2026: Airalo's page names Three only [13]; Holafly's names 3 Ireland and Vodafone [14]; Ubigi's names eir and Three [15]; Saily's names none [16]. Nomad's own blog lists Vodafone, Three and eir, and eSIM4Travel's blog describes a Three and Vodafone blend, which is how its Ireland plans are listed in our comparison tool. A competitor site reports Three for Jetpac, Roamless and GigSky, and a third-party wiki reports all three networks for Yesim; our comparison tool lists eir for Roamless and eir (as Meteor) plus Vodafone for Jetpac's Europe plans, so those are unconfirmed. GoMoWorld, Global YO and Maya Mobile do not name their Irish network. Two naming traps when you look at your status bar: "Meteor" is eir (the brand was retired in 2017 but the network name persists), and "H3G" is Three.

3G is going: Vodafone switched its 3G network off in October 2024 [4], and eir switches its 3G off in phases from October 2026 [5]; ComReg gives no date for Three. A phone that needs 3G, or a plan limited to 3G fallback, will have nowhere to go, so a 4G-capable phone is the minimum. Our guide to eSIMs with several networks and switching operator by hand covers the one trick that fixed several failures in the reports above.

How to Set Up an eSIM for Ireland

Install at home on Wi-Fi, before you fly: almost every provider's plan starts on first connection in Ireland, not at install, and the reports from Dublin Airport show that the travelers who landed connected had installed in advance. The exceptions matter: GoMoWorld's plan does nothing until you press Start or schedule it, Yesim's plan started at purchase in our test, and some Airalo packages start at install, so check the package page.

  1. Check the phone. Our list of phones with eSIM support covers most models; note that iPhones sold in mainland China support eSIM only on the 17e and Air [17]. A phone locked to a carrier will not take a travel eSIM.
  2. Pick the plan type. An Ireland-only plan covers the Republic; a Europe plan covers Belfast and the rest of the UK too. Maya Mobile's and Nomad's reports show travelers losing service at the border on Ireland-only plans, and Ubigi and Nomad users bought UK plans that did not cover Ireland.
  3. Install from the QR code or the app. eSIM4Travel, Airalo, Maya Mobile, Ubigi, Yesim, ByteSIM, Jetpac, Nomad and Holafly send a QR code by email; GoMoWorld, Saily, Roamless, GigSky and Global YO install from the app. Our guides for adding an eSIM on iPhone and adding an eSIM on Samsung show the screens. A Holafly QR code scans once and a deleted Holafly or Global YO eSIM cannot be reinstalled.
  4. Mind the activation window. Nomad's Ireland plans give 30 days to activate as listed in our comparison tool, eSIM4Travel 90 days, Saily auto-starts after 180 days [16], Ubigi's unscanned QR code is valid for 6 months, Jetpac keeps unactivated packs for 3 months, and Roamless credit does not expire.
  5. On landing: turn data roaming on for the eSIM and make it the data line; keep your home SIM on for calls and texts but with its data off. Maya Mobile and Global YO use the APN "globaldata", Ubigi uses "mobiledata", and Roamless worked in our test only after we chose the Proximus APN. A Holafly Android user needed roaming set to "all carriers".
  6. If nothing happens: restart the phone, then select the network by hand (Three first). A Maya Mobile user, an eSIM4Travel user and a Nomad user all fixed dead spots that way. Our eSIM troubleshooting guide has the rest, and our first eSIM walkthrough covers everything from compatibility to activation.

Calls and SMS in Ireland

Ireland's calling code is +353, and almost every travel eSIM here is data-only, so calls go over WhatsApp, FaceTime or a similar app; one Nomad user found that app calls and texts to Ireland worked clearly. The exceptions in our comparison tool as of October 2026: Airalo's Discover+ global plans include calls and texts with a US number, Jetpac sells in-app voice packs, Roamless offers VoIP calls and an optional second number, Saily sells an optional US number with an identity check [16], Global YO has outgoing VoIP calls, and Holafly's subscription adds a number that can receive texts.

For a real Irish number, a local SIM is the route: Three's Visit Ireland plans include 50 or 250 minutes [7], Vodafone's Data Unlimited 5G includes 100 minutes and texts to any network plus 100 international minutes [9], and eir's €20.00 tier includes calls and texts [11]. Keeping your home SIM active for incoming calls and SMS codes is the usual set-up; a GoMoWorld user on a UK eSIM only received her texts once she was back in Ireland on her home SIM, which is the risk of switching the home line off. Calls from an Irish number to Northern Ireland use the 048 prefix rather than +44.

Free eSIM Data for Ireland

Five providers in this article give away data that works in Ireland. GigSky's complimentary plans for Visa cardholders are the one with evidence: four travelers in the reports used them in Ireland in May and June 2026, and two found 3 GB enough for a 12-day trip of maps, email and research; GigSky also offers a 100 MB trial. Roamless lists a free Ireland trial plan in our comparison tool and a small free credit on sign-up; Nomad lists a 1 GB trial plan; GoMoWorld gives a free 1-day trial; and Jetpac's Eterna eSIM carries 100 MB. Our round-up of free eSIM data plans and trials says how to claim each one and what the catches are.

Frequently Asked Questions About eSIMs in Ireland

Which eSIM works best in Ireland?
Maya Mobile is the best option for most trips: it worked well for 26 of 27 travelers who reported from Ireland, with the one miss a phone that never connected in Dublin, and our test found no speed cap. Holafly had the only perfect record, 20 of 20, but its speed was capped from the start in our test. Nomad and Ubigi worked for 85% of travelers on fixed data and cheap unlimited plans. Compare current prices with (eSIM Comparison).
Does an Ireland eSIM work in Northern Ireland?
No: an Ireland-only eSIM stops at the border, because Northern Ireland is part of the UK. Travelers in our reports lost service crossing on Ireland-only plans from Maya Mobile and Nomad, and others bought UK plans that did not cover the Republic. A Europe plan covers both sides; Holafly, Nomad, GoMoWorld, Ubigi and GigSky users all crossed without trouble on regional plans.
How much data do I need for Ireland?
Around 3 to 5 GB covers a week of maps, messaging and photos; two GigSky users found 3 GB enough for 12 days of maps and email, and a Ubigi user used under 5 GB in 12 days. Streaming, video calls and hotspot use push you to 10 GB or more, and rural signal drops make offline maps worth downloading first. For a number based on your own habits, use (Travel Data Calculator).
What is the cheapest eSIM for Ireland?
eSIM4Travel is the cheapest provider for Ireland in our comparison at every size from 2 GB to 10 GB, with Global YO second across all countries in our comparison, though neither has enough Ireland reports to judge coverage. For unlimited data, Ubigi has the cheapest 30-day plan and Maya Mobile the cheapest global unlimited plan. Live prices change, so check (eSIM Comparison).
Do I need ID to buy a SIM card in Ireland as a tourist?
No, Ireland requires no ID or registration for a prepaid SIM; the regulator ComReg says Ireland is one of only a few countries without prepay SIM registration. Three sells tourist eSIMs with 5 GB or 25 GB and an Irish number, Vodafone an unlimited 5G plan, and eir a prepay plan with unlimited data. WH Smith in Dublin Airport Terminal 1 sells Three and Vodafone SIMs, though prices there can be higher than in town.
Which eSIM is best for Dublin?
Holafly had the best Dublin record: all five reports worked, from the airport to the city and the bus to Galway, with the caveat that its speed was capped from the start in our test, so it suits maps, messaging and streaming rather than large uploads. Maya Mobile worked for two of three Dublin reports, with one phone that never connected. Nomad and Holafly users were online within seconds of landing at Dublin Airport.
Will my eSIM work on the Wild Atlantic Way?
Expect gaps: every west-coast report in our set was a failure, spread across Nomad (Donegal), Ubigi (west of Ireland) and Airalo (Galway and the midlands), and ComReg found rural users lose signal more often. Maya Mobile and Nomad users reported the best rural coverage overall, and a provider that lets you switch network by hand gives you a second chance. Offline maps for the whole route are the sensible backup (Data saving on vacation | tips and tricks).

Summary: the best eSIM for Ireland

Maya Mobile is the best option for most trips to Ireland: its global unlimited plan worked well for 26 of 27 travelers who reported from Ireland, on rural drives as well as in Dublin, and our test found no speed cap, though it sells nothing shorter than three days and the help desk is middling. Holafly had the only perfect record, 20 of 20, and is the Dublin pick, but its speed was capped from the start in our test and there are no top-ups. Nomad (23 of 27) is the fixed-data choice for experienced users who will not need help, with its misses in Donegal and the west. Ubigi (17 of 20) has the cheapest 30-day unlimited plan in our comparison and strong road-trip reports, with the worst help desk we tested. eSIM4Travel is the cheapest provider for Ireland in our comparison and has a human help desk, but one report so far.

Whichever provider you use, two things from the reports matter more than the brand: an Ireland-only plan stops at the Northern Ireland border, and the west coast has dead zones on every network, so a Europe plan and offline maps cover both risks. Based on the traveler reports, our tests and the current plans, that is our view of the best eSIM for Ireland in 2026.
