Nomad is the pick for most Iceland trips, and above all for a self-drive, because it is the only provider with strong evidence here and that evidence is good. It worked well for 23 of 25 travelers who reported from Iceland (92%), the only provider with 20 or more reports. All three travelers who named the Ring Road had coverage the whole way round, one of them on a seven-day drive and one who also used F roads (the gravel interior tracks) without a glitch. Others report a fast hotspot to a laptop, quick photo uploads from a hotel, and reliable service in South Iceland. One Ring Road driver wrote on 9 Aug 2026: "Coverage in Iceland was good all along the ring road."

The two misses were not setup failures. One traveler in July 2026 found the eSIM not working in most areas of Iceland and could hardly get online. The other, in April 2026, had a Europe package that dropped every 30 seconds and killed app calls; that review covers Europe generally rather than Iceland alone. Among the hiccups we still counted as working: one traveler needed almost an hour to connect on arrival, one found speeds slow with a data counter that undercounted, one hit a single dead spot in Reykjavik, and one long-time user found the signal weaker than friends' eSIMs in several countries, Iceland included.

Nomad's Iceland plans run from 1 GB for 3 or 7 days to 3, 5, 10, 20 and 50 GB for 30 days, plus unlimited for 3, 5, 7 or 10 days with 2 GB a day at full speed, then slowed; its Europe and Global plans also cover Iceland. Its price position is slightly below the market average across our comparison, though dearer in Europe than in the Americas. The network is the one open question: Nomad's own Iceland page named Nova and Vodafone (Sýn) when we opened it on 18 Sep 2026, an earlier copy of the page named Vodafone and Síminn, and our comparison tool lists Nova and Síminn, so we cannot say which pair you will get [15]. The main drawback is the help desk: in our test the chat bot looped and gave no route to a person, which matches the traveler who spent her last day troubleshooting alone. Maya Mobile is the pick for a week or longer in Iceland when you do not want to count gigabytes, because its global unlimited plan has the best record here. It worked well for all 17 travelers who reported from Iceland (100%), the most reports of any provider without a single failure. The successes cover a 12-day road trip, the Ring Road from the north-west to the south-east, remote parts of Iceland and Lapland on one trip, and a family who bought separate plans for each member. One traveler wrote on 18 Aug 2024: "Good signal at all places from the North West till the South East of the ring road." Another found it better than her regular service at home in the US, and one used Wi-Fi calling over the eSIM data to keep her US number working.

There were no misses, but two reports carry a warning. One traveler in April 2025 found the network patchy around central Iceland, and one in May 2025 found data a bit slow at times. Both still rated the service highly and counted it as working. Maya dropped its Iceland-only plans in 2026, so what you buy is the global plan, as of September 2026.

Maya sells one thing: unlimited global data for 3, 7, 14 or 30 days, with a Global + Cruise version for ships, and nothing smaller than 3 days or fixed in size. Our comparison tool lists its fair-use rule as 5 GB a day at full speed, then slowed, with hotspot allowed; Maya's own Iceland page claims no caps and no throttling, so the two disagree [22]. In our test the data ran at full 5G speed and slowed only after several gigabytes in one day, the fairest unlimited rule we have seen, and Maya's global unlimited plan is by far the cheapest global unlimited plan in our comparison. The eSIM arrives as a QR code by email, installs in about two minutes and needs the APN set to "globaldata" and roaming on; the help desk on WhatsApp pushed us through a bot and a form before a person replied. Maya's page does not name an Icelandic network. For a weekend it is poor value against a small fixed plan; for a Ring Road week it is hard to beat. Holafly is the safe choice for remote parts of Iceland, with one stated drawback: in our test its speed was capped from the start, before any data was used. It worked well for all 15 travelers who reported from Iceland (100%). The reports describe strong signal in the most remote places, reliable data on mountain passes with only expected dips, and good coverage on trips that combined Iceland with the UK, Norway and Sweden. One traveler wrote on 6 Jul 2026: "Reliable connection in Iceland even in the remote areas." The capped speed is enough for maps, messaging, browsing and streaming (one reviewer downloaded large documents without trouble), but slow for big uploads, cloud backups and laptop work. The hotspot is limited to 1 GB a day, and there are no top-ups: when the days run out you buy a new eSIM [13].

No traveler reported a failure. The hiccups were on arrival: one traveler at Keflavík in June 2026 panicked when the eSIM did not activate on landing, then restarted the phone and it worked for the whole trip; another found installation glitchy and had to be on Wi-Fi to chat with Holafly's help desk before it was done. One traveler landing at Keflavík from Texas got prompts to connect on arrival and was online at once. A Jetpac customer whose eSIM failed at the airport in May 2026 bought a Holafly eSIM on the spot and had no connection problems after that.

Holafly sells unlimited data only, for 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 or 30 days in our comparison tool, and up to 90 days on its own page; its Europe package also includes Iceland, which one Australian traveler found convenient. Holafly names Nova and Sýn as its Icelandic networks and warns on the same page of weaker coverage in the mountains [13]. Installation is one tap with no QR code, but a deleted eSIM cannot be reinstalled. Its price position is at the market average for unlimited plans, and it is among the dearer unlimited options in most comparisons. It suits travelers who want to stop thinking about data on a Ring Road loop or a multi-country trip and do not need full speed; our Holafly review shows the capped speed test next to a local SIM on the same cell. GigSky is the pick when Iceland is one stop on a cruise or a trip that also takes in Greenland or the Faroe Islands, because its plans cover ships and islands other providers skip, and its record on land here is good. It worked well for 10 of 11 travelers who reported from Iceland (91%). The successes describe strong data along Route 1 and in towns, a five-country trip that included Iceland and the Faroes, and a Norway and Iceland cruise where it worked throughout. Two travelers used the free data GigSky gives Visa cardholders on Iceland and Greenland trips. One wrote on 5 May 2026: "In Iceland the data was strong along route 1 as well as in towns."

The one miss was at sea: a couple on a 15-day cruise pass between Ireland, Iceland and Scotland in May 2025 got little or no signal on sea days and found it slow on land, and switched to their own carrier. A second cruise review from 2024, on a ship sailing from New York towards Iceland, found the connection only worked on deck or by a window and called the setup instructions incomplete. On land, both said it worked. The lesson from the reviews and our own cruise test is the same: GigSky's ship plans connect only near shore or in port and often only outdoors, so treat them as a top-up for excursions, not as cabin Wi-Fi.

GigSky's Iceland plans run from 1 GB for 7 days through 3, 5 and 10 GB to 20 GB for 90 days and 50 GB for 180 days, plus a 1-day unlimited pass; its Europe, Cruise and Europe, Cruise and World, and Europe Ferries plans also cover Iceland. GigSky's page says the network varies and it connects to the fastest one, so we cannot name it. Its price position is the most expensive in our comparison overall, driven by other countries; its entry plans and 1-day passes are cheap, and in large European markets it sits at the market average. You must install the app to buy, but the app keeps working when your data runs out, so you can buy another plan without Wi-Fi, which only Ubigi matched in our test. The help desk answered us at once. Airalo is the pick if you want calls and texts on the same eSIM, because it sells the most voice plans of any provider here; its coverage record is good but its setup record is the weakest in the Best group. It worked well for 12 of 14 travelers who reported from Iceland (86%). The successes are mostly frequent travelers who have used Airalo in many countries, Iceland among them, and describe easy installation and switching the eSIM on before leaving the plane. One traveler found it worked fine across Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway and the UK on one trip.

Both misses were on arrival: one traveler in July 2026 followed the instructions and the phone found no cellular service at all, and one in June 2026 could not get the eSIM to install. Several working reports came only after a fight. One spent four hours in chat getting the Iceland eSIM to work (July 2026), one found the second use "a bit tricky" and needed the help desk (July 2026), and one found the eSIM missing from the list until a person fixed it on arrival (June 2026). One wrote on 16 Jul 2026: "Second time in Iceland was a bit tricky and would not connect." Two more complaints were not about coverage: a traveler who could not call her bank after a card was compromised, because the plan was data only, and one who found the signal weak.

Airalo's Iceland plans are sold under the name Nenna Mobile, from 1 GB for 3 days to 50 GB for 30 days, plus unlimited for 3 to 30 days at 3 GB a day, then slowed. Its Eurolink regional plans add unlimited at 5 GB a day, and its Discover+ global plans include voice minutes and texts with a US number, which is the answer to the bank problem above. Airalo names Síminn as its primary Icelandic network, with a second network it does not name [12]. Its price position is at the market average and never the cheapest in a popular destination. You can buy in the browser without the app, the eSIM comes as a QR code, and most packages start on first connection, though some start at install, so check the package page. eSIM4Travel is the pick for the lowest price in Iceland, backed by the best help desk in our test, but with no traveler reports from Iceland yet, so its record here is unproven. In our comparison tool it has the cheapest 3 GB, 5 GB and 10 GB plans of any provider for Iceland (as of October 2026), and it is the cheapest provider in our comparison almost everywhere. In our hands-on test, run outside Iceland, the eSIM arrived by email, installed from a QR code and worked right away, and the chat bot handed us to a person after one click, who solved the problem and suggested switching network.

What you get for Iceland, as of September 2026: two parallel products. Product A names Síminn and Vodafone (Sýn) as its networks and is the one in our comparison tool, with 1 GB for 7 days, 3 to 50 GB for 30 days and unlimited for 3 to 30 days at 3 GB a day, then slowed, with hotspot allowed and 90 days to activate [16]. Product B names Nova and Síminn, has no top-up and was marked "being upgraded" on its page when we checked, so we would buy A. Its Best Europe 41 and Global 72 plans also cover Iceland.

The downsides are the same as everywhere: no app, no Google Pay, card details typed by hand, and no way to top up without Wi-Fi once the data runs out, because the store is a website. Ubigi has the most Iceland failures of any provider, so it is not a top pick despite some of the best highland reports. It worked well for 13 of 18 travelers who reported from Iceland (72%). The successes are real: service everywhere including the Highland Base Camp, coverage around the whole Ring Road with only a few remote gaps, the southern part of Route 1 and Reykjavik, and a plan that worked from landing and switched back to the home SIM on return. One traveler wrote on 21 Aug 2026: "I had coverage all along the southern portion of Route 1 (Ring Road) and Reykjavik." The five misses are a pattern: no signal at all on a 15-day 3 GB plan (May 2026), "dead slow" data and often none (July 2026), nothing in Iceland while the same phone worked in Ireland or Norway and the UK (June 2026, two reports), and a Europe plan that did not cover Iceland and was slow in the capital once it did (July 2026). One of those travelers also got no reply from the help desk, which matches our test, where an email ticket went unanswered for 24 hours.

Ubigi rides Sýn alone, which its page still calls Vodafone [18]; one network is a likely reason for the dead spots. The eSIM profile shows up as Transatel, which confused one traveler until she renamed it. Its Iceland plans are 3 GB for 15 days, 10 GB and 50 GB for 30 days and unlimited for 7 days, slowed after 20 GB; only its Europe Extended and Scandinavia and Baltic regional plans list Iceland in our comparison tool, so check the country list before buying a Europe plan [18]. Its price position is just below the market average, and it is one of two providers whose app can buy more data at zero balance. Jetpac is a maybe for frequent flyers who want its extras, not a pick on its Iceland record. It worked well for 2 of 3 travelers who reported from Iceland (67%), too few to judge. The failure was bad: a traveler in May 2026 followed the activation steps on arrival, got nothing, lost the first three and a half hours of the trip with help from Icelandair staff, and bought a Holafly eSIM instead; the refund request then stalled. The two successes were a New Zealand and Iceland trip without issues and an Iceland and USA trip in July 2025 where the help desk quickly moved a package to the right phone.

Jetpac's Iceland plans run from 3 GB to 40 GB and unlimited for 3 to 30 days; every Iceland unlimited plan in our comparison tool is marked 4G only, while its Europe unlimited plans, which also cover Iceland, allow 5G. The extras are free WhatsApp, Maps and Uber after the data runs out on packs of 3 GB or more, in-app voice packs and a free lounge if your flight is delayed an hour or more. Saily has the most polished app and the joint-best help desk in our test, but only three Iceland reports and a high price position, so it is not a pick here. It worked well for 2 of 3 travelers who reported from Iceland (67%), too few to judge. The failure, in June 2026, was a five-year-old Samsung that could not connect to the Icelandic network while the two iPhones in the same family worked fine; the traveler fell back on his US carrier's travel pass. One returning customer said it worked perfectly on a previous Iceland trip and that the chat was available at once when she needed it.

Saily's Iceland plans are 1 GB for 7 days, 3 to 20 GB for 30 days and unlimited for 15 days at 5 GB a day, then slowed; its Europe and Global plans also cover Iceland. Saily does not name its Icelandic network on its page (checked September 2026). The eSIM exists only in the app, installation is the smoothest we tested, and the plan starts on first connection, so you can set it up at home. Its price position is among the most expensive in the places people travel. Global YO is the second-cheapest provider in our comparison and both Iceland reports were positive, but two reports are too few to judge. It worked well for 2 of 2 travelers who reported from Iceland (100%). One used it for a month across Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark in 2024 and had at least 4G in remote places where companions on other brands lost signal; the other used a Europe plan covering Iceland in 2024 without issues but could not add a week of data to his wife's account. One wrote on 29 Aug 2024: "Even in remote places in Finnish, Lapland and Iceland, I had at least 4G."

Global YO names Nova and Vodafone (Sýn) as its Icelandic networks [14]. Its Iceland plans run from 1 GB for 3 days to 100 GB for 60 days, with Europe Explorer and Global Explorer plans that also cover Iceland. It sells no unlimited plan, only Day Plans whose daily allowance is listed differently in the plan name and the plan terms in our comparison tool, so check before buying. Purchase is app-only, the eSIM is emailed, the APN is "globaldata", and a deleted eSIM cannot be reinstalled. The help desk took ten minutes for a template reply in our test. Roamless is a sensible choice for light data use across several countries, and both Iceland reports were positive, but two reports are too few to judge. It worked well for 2 of 2 travelers who reported from Iceland (100%): one on a trip through South America, Iceland and Norway in late 2025, one who found it worked everywhere including Greenland and Iceland. The second wrote on 15 Oct 2025: "Worked everywhere we travelled, even Greenland and Iceland." Roamless is also the third most reliable provider across all our traveler reports.

It sells one global eSIM with pay-as-you-go credit that never expires, 30-day Iceland plans from 1 GB to 50 GB and beyond, a free 500 MB trial for new users, and Europe and Global 30-day plans; no unlimited, no throttling stated, unlimited hotspot. Its Icelandic networks are unsettled: its page named Sýn and Síminn on 18 Sep 2026 and Nova and Síminn on 25 Sep 2026, so expect Síminn plus one other [19]. In our test the preset APN did not work until we picked another one, and Google Pay failed at checkout. Its price position is at the market average in popular destinations, cheap for 1 GB and dear from 10 GB up, and a trickle of data stays on at zero balance so you can top up. Yesim has one positive Iceland report, too few to judge, and the slowest help desk we tested after Ubigi, so it is not a pick. It worked well for 1 of 1 travelers who reported from Iceland (100%), with no detail in the review text to say where. Across all countries its record is about average.

Yesim's Iceland plans are fixed data from 500 MB to 30 GB and unlimited sold by the day for 1 to 30 days, under its partner operators' fair-use rules, with a limit it does not publish; its Europe, Global and Unlim Day Pass plans also cover Iceland. A search snippet of its page lists Nova and Vodafone (Sýn) as the networks, which we could not confirm on the page itself. In our test the plan started at purchase rather than on arrival, so buy close to your departure or use the "Activate later" option, and replies from the help desk took 15 to 60 minutes each. GoMoWorld is worth a look for heavy data use at a low price, but there are no traveler reports from Iceland yet, so we cannot rate it here. Its Iceland plans are 5 GB for 7 days and 15, 50 or 75 GB for 30 days at the same four flat euro prices it charges everywhere, which makes the big plans cheap; its price position is below the market average overall. GoMoWorld's page offers a free 1 GB one-day trial for Iceland and does not name a network (checked September 2026) [21].

In our test it was the fastest and least throttled provider, with hotspot allowed, but it is app-only: the eSIM is never emailed, one account serves one device, and the plan does nothing until you press Start in the app, which is the usual cause of "not working". Humans answer the help desk only in office hours. It suits travelers who want 50 GB or more on an eir-run app and will set it up before flying; our GoMoWorld review shows the Start step. ByteSIM has no traveler reports from Iceland yet and the clumsiest checkout and app in our test, so it is not a pick. Its Iceland catalogue is the largest in our comparison tool: daily plans from 500 MB to 10 GB a day for 1 to 30 days, fixed 10, 20 and 30 GB plans for 3 to 30 days, and unlimited for 1 to 30 days, slowed after the quota at a limit it does not publish. ByteSIM names Nova and Síminn as its Icelandic networks, the only provider besides eSIM4Travel's second product to pair those two [17].

The price position is at the market average, cheaper for short trips at 3 to 5 GB and dearer for long validities. There are no top-ups, the checkout demanded a phone number and full postal address, auto-activation failed in our test and the WhatsApp help desk did not answer within 15 minutes, though customers report fast replies. It suits experienced users who pay with a local wallet; our ByteSIM review shows the install errors. Plans are at ByteSIM.

Price per GB in Iceland by eSIM Provider

How much does each provider charge per GB in Iceland? The chart below compares plans of 1 to 10 GB that last 6 to 14 days, the usual range for a one- or two-week Ring Road trip. Provider websites show only their own plans, so this side-by-side view is one you would otherwise have to work out yourself. A shorter bar means a lower price per GB.

The tables below list the current plans at each data size, with live prices. Unlimited plans for Iceland come from Holafly, Maya Mobile, Airalo, Nomad, Saily, Jetpac, Yesim, Ubigi, ByteSIM and eSIM4Travel; GigSky sells only a 1-day pass, and Global YO, GoMoWorld and Roamless sell none. Best eSIM for the Ring Road, Reykjavik and the Highlands

Most Iceland reports name the country as a whole; the ones that name a place are about the Ring Road, Reykjavik, Keflavík airport and the highlands. The table shows them with raw counts per provider.

Best eSIM for the Ring Road

Nomad wins the Ring Road on the reports: all three travelers who named it had coverage the whole way round, one on a seven-day drive, one who also used F roads, and one who said it was good all along the road. Ubigi's two Ring Road reports were also positive, but with "a few pretty remote spots" on one drive and coverage described only for the southern part of Route 1 on the other, and Ubigi's country record carries five failures. Maya Mobile and Holafly have no Ring Road rows in our counts, but their country-level reports describe the same loop: Maya from the north-west to the south-east and on a 12-day road trip, Holafly on mountain passes with only expected dips, and Holafly's speed was capped in our test. One GigSky traveler found data strong along Route 1 and in towns.

At Keflavík airport the reports are about arrival, not coverage. A Holafly traveler got prompts to connect on landing and was online at once; another Holafly user had to restart the phone first. A Jetpac customer could not activate at the airport at all and bought Holafly there. An Airalo traveler found no cellular service after landing, and several Airalo users needed the help desk before the eSIM connected. Whatever you buy, install it at home and switch it on before you leave the plane, as the Airalo regulars do.

Best eSIM for Reykjavik

No provider has three Reykjavik reports, so the country pick, Nomad, applies, and the city is where the reports show the fewest problems. Ubigi's two Reykjavik reports were positive, including coverage across the capital on a southern Route 1 trip; the one Nomad report found a single spot in the city with no data signal and called everything else flawless. The one capital-area complaint came from a Ubigi customer whose Europe plan did not include Iceland and who found speeds slow in the capital once it was sorted. The capital area is where the operators' 5G is densest: Nova claims 5G coverage across Iceland, and Síminn claims 4G and 5G nationwide [8] [7].

The highlands have too few reports for a pick, but the ones we have are useful. A Ubigi traveler had service at the Highland Base Camp and everywhere else on the trip, a Nomad driver used F roads without a glitch, a Maya Mobile traveler found central Iceland patchy, and Holafly's own page warns of weaker coverage in the mountains [13]. The highlands and the East are also where Icelandic news reports placed lost signal after the 2026 shutdown of 3G, so carry offline maps there whichever eSIM you choose.

Local SIM Cards and Operator eSIMs in Iceland

A local operator eSIM makes sense in Iceland only if you want an Icelandic number, included minutes or unlimited data; at 10 GB it costs more per GB than the travel eSIMs in our comparison. Síminn's eSIM Starter Pack costs from 3,000 kr (roughly $24 at the rate we used in September 2026) and comes in two forms: 10 GB for 30 days with 50 international minutes to a list of countries and 50 texts, usable in Iceland or the EEA, or Unlimited for 14 days with unlimited data, minutes and texts to Icelandic numbers while in Iceland [5]. The eSIM activates at purchase, not on arrival, the unlimited version works only in Iceland, and neither works outside the EEA [5]. Síminn's prepaid page adds that the 14-day pack's data is limited to 50 GB when roaming in the EEA, that top-ups start at 500 kr, and that it gives free hotel delivery; the unlimited pack's price was not shown on the shop page when we checked [6]. A physical starter SIM costs 3,000 kr, activates on insertion and lasts 30 days, as of September 2026 [5]. A first-person guide on toomanyadapters (August 2026) reports a 25 GB pack with unlimited domestic calls and texts for 4,100 kr, bought in Síminn's Kringlan store with no passport asked; we could not confirm that price.

Nova sells a travel eSIM with unlimited data for a duration you choose, fully self-service and activating on arrival, but its prices load in a script we could not read, so we cannot quote them. Its prepaid Frelsi plan includes unlimited calls and texts in Iceland and the EEA. Nova's plastic SIM is sold at ELKO, including the ELKO at Keflavík airport, and in its stores in Kringlan, Smáralind, Lágmúli and Akureyri [8]. Sýn lists a prepaid 4G and 5G starter kit without a price, and still sells a Vodafone-branded Premium Starter Pack only on board Icelandair flights [10]. We could not confirm from an official source whether a passport is needed to buy a prepaid SIM; the guides we found disagree, so bring one.

When a local SIM wins: you need to be called on a local number, you will phone Icelandic numbers a lot, or you want unlimited data for two weeks and your travel eSIM's daily allowance is too small. When it does not: a one- or two-week data trip, where every travel eSIM in our research undercut Síminn's 10 GB pack per GB, and where the eSIM arrives by email before you fly and do not start the clock at purchase. We could not confirm what the airport shops sell beyond Nova's plastic SIM at ELKO, so a travel eSIM installed at home gets you online before any kiosk does.

Mobile Networks in Iceland

Three operators run networks in Iceland: Síminn, Nova and Sýn, and no independent ranking says which is best, so the traveler reports above are the better guide. By subscriptions, the regulator's 2024 report puts Síminn first, Nova second and Sýn third, though its chart leaves the slices unlabelled and the order is our reading [1]. Nova's own map claims coverage for more than 98% of the population, and its English page claims 5G across the country [9] [8]; Síminn's coverage page claims 4G and 5G nationwide, and its prepaid page claims first place in the regulator's quality survey by Rohde and Schwarz, a claim we could not check against the survey itself [7] [6]; Sýn claims great coverage nationwide and on the fishing grounds [11]. Sýn dropped the Vodafone brand in June 2025 according to Icelandic news reports, which is why several eSIM pages still say Vodafone. The regulator's all-operator webmap shows 4G and 5G coverage and the trunk-road sections below its speed target [2].

Which provider rides which network, as the providers themselves state it: Síminn carries Airalo, eSIM4Travel, ByteSIM and Roamless [12] [16] [17] [19]; Nova carries Holafly, Global YO and ByteSIM [13] [14] [17]; Sýn carries Holafly, Global YO, eSIM4Travel and Ubigi, the last on Sýn alone [18]. Nomad's page has named two different pairs and Roamless's second network differed between two checks in September 2026 [15] [19]. A search snippet lists Yesim on Nova and Sýn. Saily, Jetpac, GigSky, GoMoWorld and Maya Mobile did not name a network on their pages when we checked in September 2026. Two-network providers (Holafly, Global YO, ByteSIM, eSIM4Travel, Roamless) have a fallback where one operator has a gap; Ubigi, on one network, had the most failures here.

The 2026 shutdown is the fact that matters most for an older phone. All three operators closed 2G and 3G in stages, with 3G gone from the capital area on 8 Apr 2026 and the final closure on 1 Jun 2026 [3] [4]. A phone that cannot register on 4G gets no service, and the 112 service runs a test line, 1280, to check that a handset can still reach the emergency number [4]. The regulator's report says 4G and 5G reach more than 99% of homes and high-speed mobile covers more than 80% of the land area and 98% of roads, with unbroken trunk-road coverage only targeted for the end of 2030; it also records that emergency SMS alerts, like those for the Reykjanes eruptions, reach foreign phones too [1]. Icelandic news reports describe lost signal after the shutdown in rural areas, the East and the highlands, and a new nationwide drive test began in September 2026 with results expected in November; according to Austurfrétt, the operators say every 3G site was replaced by 4G, including lower bands. How to Set Up an eSIM for Iceland

Install at home on Wi-Fi, and switch the eSIM on before you leave the plane; the arrival failures in the reports were almost all setup problems that a help desk fixed later, not dead networks.

1. Check your phone can use eSIM and 4G and is unlocked; after the 2026 shutdown a phone without 4G gets nothing in Iceland. Our list of phones that take an eSIM has the models.
2. Buy and install at home. Saily, GoMoWorld, Roamless, GigSky and Global YO need their app to buy; the others email a QR code. Most plans start on first connection in Iceland, so installing early costs nothing. The exceptions: Yesim's plan started at purchase in our test, GoMoWorld's plan does nothing until you press Start in the app, and some Airalo packages start at install.
3. Mind the activation window. Nomad's page says activate within 60 days, though its plan terms in our comparison tool say 30 [15]; eSIM4Travel gives 90 days [16]; Jetpac keeps unactivated packs for three months [20]; Ubigi's unscanned QR code is valid for six months; Saily starts the plan itself after 180 days and Yesim allows 180 days. GigSky's eSIM cannot be paused once it connects, so keep it off until you land.
4. On landing, turn on data roaming, select the eSIM for mobile data and, where needed, set the APN: "globaldata" for Maya Mobile and Global YO, "gigsky" for GigSky, "mobiledata" for Ubigi. Ubigi's profile shows as Transatel and Jetpac's as "Play", which confused travelers in the reports; Jetpac's data dropped in our test until the physical SIM was switched off, and Roamless needed a different APN than the preset one. 5. If nothing happens, restart the phone (that was the fix for a Holafly traveler at Keflavík) or toggle airplane mode, then pick the network by hand in the settings. Our troubleshooting guide lists the rest in order.
6. Delete nothing until you are home: a Holafly eSIM and most Global YO eSIMs cannot be reinstalled once removed, and eSIM4Travel allows one device per eSIM.

Calls and SMS in Iceland

Iceland's calling code is +354, and most travel eSIMs for Iceland are data only, so calls go over WhatsApp, FaceTime or a similar app unless you pick a plan with voice. The plans in our comparison tool that include calls and texts and cover Iceland are Airalo's Discover+ global plans, which come with a US number; one Airalo customer who could not phone her bank from Iceland had a data-only plan and wanted exactly this. Jetpac sells voice packs inside its app, Roamless offers in-app calls and an optional second number, Global YO offers outgoing internet calls, and Saily sells a US number as an add-on. A Maya Mobile traveler kept her US number working with Wi-Fi calling over the eSIM data, which works on any provider if your home carrier allows it. Ubigi, Holafly, GigSky and the rest are data only; one Ubigi traveler could not make a call within Iceland for that reason.

For an Icelandic number, a local SIM is the alternative: Síminn's 10 GB starter pack includes 50 international minutes and 50 texts, and Nova's prepaid plan includes unlimited calls and texts in Iceland and the EEA [5] [8]. Emergency calls to 112 work from any phone that can register on 4G, and the 1280 test line checks that yours can [4].

Free eSIM Data for Iceland

Four providers give away data that works in Iceland. GoMoWorld's Iceland page offers a free 1 GB plan for one day, enough to test the app before you buy [21]. Roamless lists a free 500 MB Iceland trial for new users in our comparison tool, with no throttling and 30 days to use it after activation. GigSky gives a free 100 MB trial and free plans to Visa cardholders, and two travelers in the reports used that Visa data on Iceland and Greenland trips.
