What real eSIM customers say, and what we found when we tried it ourselves
Every provider's marketing page says the same thing: fast, reliable, easy to set up. Real reviews tell a more useful story, and our own testing tells a third one. We pulled the most recent customer reviews for each provider, read them, and sorted the patterns into what people like, what they complain about, and where in the world the eSIM actually worked. Then, wherever we had already bought and tested the plan ourselves, we checked whether our own install notes, support chats and pricing match what customers say.
They mostly agree. Sometimes they don't, and those disagreements turn out to be the most useful part of this whole exercise.
How we analyzed these reviews
We collected the most recent customer reviews published for each provider, from 189 reviews for the smallest sample (eSIM4Travel) to 2,000 for the largest. That is 19,285 reviews in total, across 11 providers whose combined public review profiles hold more than 235,000 reviews. Star ratings, review counts and reply rates quoted here were read from each provider's public Trustpilot profile at the time of writing, and belong to their respective owners.
For each provider, we tallied the star ratings and grouped repeated phrases into themes (for example "eSIM didn't connect" or "fast customer support"). We also read which countries reviewers named as working well or not. Where we have already bought the plan with our own money and tested it, for Airalo, eSIM4Travel, GigSky, Global YO, GoMoWorld, Holafly, Jetpac, Nomad eSIM, Saily and Yesim, we bring in our own notes on the purchase flow, the app, the support chat, and the fine print in each provider's terms. ByteSIM is the one provider on this list we have not put through our own hands-on test yet, so its section below rests on review data alone.
One honest note on our own testing: it happened at a fixed point in time and in a limited number of locations, so we are not repeating specific speed numbers here. A download speed measured once in one city tells you little about what you will get on a beach in Thailand or a subway in Seoul. Instead, we focus on what stays true wherever you travel: how a provider handles fair-use limits, what its app and support are actually like to use, and what its pricing and terms say in writing.
A few honest limits on the review data itself:
- Country results come from countries named in the review text, not a structured field. Reviews that praise or complain without naming a country are not counted in any country's total.
- eSIM4Travel (192 reviews) and Global YO (1,391 reviews) have smaller samples than the rest, so single reviews carry more weight in their totals.
- Reply rates are taken directly from each provider's own published response data.

Notice that the two columns do not always move together. GoMoWorld sits last on customer ratings but second from the top in our own testing. Holafly and Airalo sit near the top of the customer ratings but land in the middle of our tested scores. We dig into why in the next section.
Where customer reviews and our own tests agree, and where they don't
Two providers show real agreement between what customers say and what we found: Saily (4.73/5 from customers, 8.6/10 in our test) and eSIM4Travel (4.29/5 from customers, 8.8/10 in our test). Both score well with strangers on the internet and with our own team, which is the strongest signal we can give you.
GoMoWorld is the biggest surprise in the other direction. It has the lowest customer average of the 11 providers and the highest share of 1-star reviews, yet in our own test its network was genuinely one of the best we have seen: real 5G with no throttling at all, even after we deliberately used a large amount of data in a single day to try to trigger a slowdown. Our best guess, based on both datasets: the network itself is excellent, but GoMoWorld only offers human support on weekdays from 8:00 to 17:00, and its terms allow up to 10 working days to resolve a complaint. If your eSIM works, that is easy to overlook. If it does not, and you are stuck on a Saturday, it stops feeling like a small detail.
Holafly and Airalo both carry huge review counts and averages above 4.2, but our own tests found real friction underneath the surface: Holafly's "unlimited" plans quietly throttle after a daily allowance that is not clearly spelled out anywhere on the pricing page, and Airalo's purchase flow adds several tutorial pages that experienced travelers do not need, at prices that ran noticeably higher than budget competitors for the same amount of data. A high customer score across tens of thousands of reviews still means most people had a fine trip. It does not always mean the plan is priced fairly or that the fine print matches the marketing.
1. ByteSIM: the highest average score, not yet in our own lab
ByteSIM tops the ranking with a 4.81 out of 5 average and a 1-star share of just 3.2%, the lowest of any provider here. The most repeated praise is fast WhatsApp support, mentioned in over a third of all reviews, often with replies within minutes at any hour. The most common complaint, still rare, is speed that falls short of the advertised 5G in some countries. Reviewers report strong results in the USA, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia and China. We have not yet bought and tested ByteSIM ourselves, so we cannot add our own notes here, but based on review volume alone it is one to watch.

Holafly holds the largest number of reviews of any provider we checked, over 106,000, and still averages 4.77 out of 5. Easy installation is a genuine strength, backed up by our own test: you tap "Install" in the app, no QR code to scan, and data works right away.
What we would flag before you buy is the word "unlimited" itself. Holafly's own fair-use policy allows it to slow your connection down after a set daily allowance, and that limit is not stated clearly anywhere in the pricing pages, only in the terms. Our support chat also showed us something odd: three staff photos appear when you open the chat window, and two of them are the exact same picture. It is a small thing, but it made us look twice at the rest of the page. Holafly stores your card details after checkout without an explicit consent step, and the app itself carries a surprisingly low store rating (3.6 stars from around 6,000 reviews) despite a million downloads, mostly because it doubles as a sales channel rather than a simple eSIM manager. The main review complaint is a connection that works at first and then stops partway through the trip. The USA, China, the UK, Japan and Portugal come up most often as working well; China shows up in both lists, since the failures that do happen there are harder to work around because of the local app market.

Jetpac's 4.76 average is backed by the strongest support pattern we found anywhere in this data: 48.4% of all reviews, almost half, specifically praise how fast support replied. Our own test agrees on speed, less so on tone: an 8-minute wait for a live agent, then technical questions about APN settings and device details rather than plain talk.
Jetpac tries harder than most to stand out. Paying customers get a 30-day ExpressVPN trial thrown in, free access to airport lounges during flight delays, and unlimited WhatsApp and Google Maps once you buy a package over 3 GB, genuinely useful perks that most competitors do not offer. The website and app interface let the side down: buttons that do the wrong thing, pop-ups asking you to register while you are still just browsing, and an eSIM that shows up in your phone's settings labeled "Play" rather than Jetpac, which can be confusing the first time you see it. There are no unlimited data plans at all here, and once your data limit is reached, the connection cuts off immediately, with no grace buffer. The main review complaint is an automated bot standing between the customer and a human before problems get solved. The USA, Japan, Thailand, Mexico and Australia work well; the UK, Singapore, Canada and France show a genuine mixed pattern.

Saily averages 4.73 out of 5, with 55.1% of all reviews specifically calling out how easy the eSIM was to buy and install, the single most repeated theme in this whole dataset. Our own test agrees: installation runs directly from the app, and support (built on a help center, a chatbot, and a human handoff) answered quickly and asked for the right screenshots without going in circles.
Saily is built by the team behind NordVPN, and it shows: the app bundles a VPN and ad blocking to help stretch your data, and it is one of the only providers here that lets you install the eSIM in advance without starting the clock on your plan, so you activate it only once you actually land. That is a real advantage over a provider like Yesim, where the plan starts counting down the moment you buy it. Unlimited plans here throttle after 1 GB used in a 24-hour period, a tighter daily allowance than some competitors, so check that figure if unlimited is the whole reason you are buying. The main review complaint is billing: refunds refused and surprise auto-renewal charges. The USA, Turkey, Japan, Thailand and India come up as reliable; the UK is a genuine coin flip.

Yesim averages 4.38 out of 5. The top theme is customers explicitly saying they will use it again, at 13.5% of reviews, closely followed by a genuinely reliable connection.
Support is where our own experience got difficult. A promised one-hour response time already felt slow, and a real question about package availability sat unanswered for over 45 minutes across several replies, including one message asking for ID and payment card details for what should have been a simple question. We also noticed Yesim pre-selects marketing email consent during signup in fine print, which is not compliant with EU data rules for a company operating in the EU, even though Yesim itself is Swiss. On the plus side, Yesim runs a "Ycoins" credit system that hands you a bonus on your first top-up and more for referring friends, worth checking if you already plan to use it more than once. One practical warning: your plan here starts counting down the moment you buy it, not when you arrive, so buy close to your travel date. The 1-star share, 10.3%, is higher than the four providers above it, driven mostly by the eSIM not connecting and by billing disputes. Turkey, Egypt, the USA, Thailand and the UAE are the strongest countries; Mexico is the one country where negative reports outnumber positive ones.

GigSky averages 4.37 out of 5. A large share of reviewers, 20.6%, mention working exactly as expected, and 10.7% specifically call out the free data GigSky gives through a Visa card partnership.
GigSky is genuinely a different kind of provider: it operates its own virtual mobile network (its name even shows up as the actual network name in your phone's status bar), with dedicated data coverage on more than 190 cruise routes, at sea in the Gulf of Mexico and North Sea, and on more than 20 airlines, places where almost no other eSIM provider offers anything at all. Selected Visa cardholders get a free 5 GB, 15-day plan in over 125 countries, and every new customer can try a free 100 MB plan with no payment details required. GigSky's own app is the one exception to a problem every other provider on this list shares: it keeps working even after your balance hits zero, so you can buy more without needing Wi-Fi first. The trade-off is a support chat that asks for details you already typed into the contact form, and an app interface that feels more like a wrapped website than a native app. The main review complaint is the eSIM not connecting at all, at 5.1% of reviews. France, Italy, the USA, Portugal and Spain work reliably; the UK is the one market where the picture is mixed.

Nomad eSIM averages 4.30 out of 5 across 41,789 reviews, the largest sample after Holafly and Airalo. Easy setup and a connection that "just works" are the top two praises.
Nomad is a business division of LotusFlare, and its app is one of the better-designed ones on this list, with a genuinely useful widget you can pin to your Android home screen to watch your remaining data at a glance. Support was the low point of our test: the chatbot asked for APN settings without explaining what they were, then ended the conversation after a few seconds of inactivity with no way to reach a person. An email did arrive about 10 minutes later, so a human is somewhere behind the system, just hard to reach directly. Nomad also runs a referral program that gives both you and your friend a $5 credit, and a free 1 GB trial for new users if you just want to test the water. Worth knowing before you buy an "unlimited" plan here: full speed is capped at 2 GB per day, after which it throttles hard. The 1-star share sits at 9.6%, mostly from the eSIM not connecting or signal disappearing indoors. China is the single most-reviewed country in the whole dataset for Nomad, and it works well overall, with a real minority reporting problems; Greece is the one destination genuinely mixed.

eSIM4Travel averages 4.29 out of 5, based on only 192 reviews, the smallest sample in this ranking, so treat its position with more caution than the bigger providers above it. Fast, problem-solving support is the top theme at 41.3% of reviews, and our own test agrees: after a short chatbot step, a real agent answered and explained that Switzerland runs on both the Salt and Sunrise networks, coming across as more professional and less over-familiar than some competitors.
The most unusual thing about eSIM4Travel is what it does not have: there is no app whatsoever, everything runs through a website that is translated into a genuinely long list of languages, including Polish. That keeps things simple, but it also means you cannot top up without Wi-Fi if your data runs out, since there is no store to open on your phone. Being the cheapest option reviewers found comes up in almost 3 in 10 reviews, and our own price check confirmed a basic plan here costs a fraction of what bigger-name competitors charge for the same amount of data, including a genuinely useful "Best Europe 35" regional plan covering 35 European countries in one purchase. The one thing missing is any kind of unlimited data option. The main complaint is a slow or dropping connection. The USA, Albania and Turkey work reliably; Bosnia and Herzegovina is the one destination with a clear pattern of eSIMs that never connected.

Airalo averages 4.21 out of 5 across 38,533 reviews, more than any provider here except Holafly. Easy setup and a connection reviewers call reliable "every time" are the top praises, and our test confirms the install itself: data started working the moment we added the eSIM, no restart needed.
Where our test and the reviews line up less neatly is price and process. The purchase flow adds several tutorial pages that experienced travelers will find unnecessary, and our own price comparison found Airalo consistently on the more expensive end for a plan of the same size, sometimes by a wide margin, next to budget-focused competitors. One quirk worth knowing: Airalo does not always cut the connection exactly at your plan's data limit, our test found it let a small amount of extra data through before stopping, a minor point in the customer's favor. Support ran through a chatbot that kept suggesting basic installation steps even after we confirmed the eSIM was already active, before eventually handing off to a person. Airalo's app store ratings are excellent (4.6 on iPhone, 4.5 on Android, both from tens of thousands of reviews), which makes its far lower customer review score, driven mostly by connection failures and refund disputes, worth noticing. The USA, Japan, Canada, Thailand and Portugal work well; Italy, Spain, Mexico, China and Switzerland show up as the more difficult destinations.

The connection stayed strong for the whole trip and was fast enough for maps and video calls. The same data would have cost several times as much on my own carrier. I'll use it again.
After years without trouble the eSIM never connected. Chat tried to help but couldn't fix it, and roughly $40 was lost. We made do with WiFi only when available, and I expect to switch providers.
Installation was simple, everything worked perfectly, and help over chat and WhatsApp came back very quickly.
The install was difficult — the guide didn't match how the settings are actually named on my phone, and it took hours to sort out. Support got the data working in the end, but in some regions speeds dropped to 3G and pages and maps took a long time to load. Usable for the price, but I expected fewer snags.

Support did not keep pace with the app's polish. GoMoWorld leans on an AI chatbot with genuinely useful, device-specific troubleshooting guides, but human support only runs on weekdays from 8:00 to 17:00, and the company's own terms allow up to 48 hours just to acknowledge a complaint and up to 10 working days to resolve one. For a product travelers often need help with immediately, on a Saturday in an unfamiliar city, that gap matters more than the network quality does. GoMoWorld also uses an average of two local carriers per country rather than relying on just one, and issues proper VAT invoices, a small but genuinely useful detail for business travelers who need to expense their connectivity. Which countries give eSIM users the most trouble
We cross-checked the country lists across all 11 providers, and one country stands out for a reason that has nothing to do with any single provider: the United Kingdom. It appears as a genuinely mixed market, split close to evenly between good and bad reports, for GigSky, Jetpac, Saily, Yesim and Airalo. That is 5 separate providers with the same pattern, which points to something about UK mobile networks or roaming agreements rather than any one company's fault.
China is the second recurring case. Nomad eSIM, Holafly and ByteSIM all report it working well overall, but Holafly, Jetpac and GoMoWorld each flag a real negative minority there too, and when a connection does fail in China, the country's app market makes the failure harder to work around, since many everyday apps and payment tools need a working connection first behind China's network restrictions.
