Airalo vs eSIM4Travel: The Short Answer
eSIM4Travel is the better buy for most travelers. In our price check across 17 countries, eSIM4Travel was cheaper on every fixed data plan we compared, usually by half. Airalo wins on coverage, on its app, and on long unlimited plans. Our overall ratings: eSIM4Travel 8.8/10, Airalo 6.8/10.
Both providers sell data eSIMs (a digital SIM built into your phone, so there is no plastic card to insert). Airalo is the best known name on the market, with coverage in 211 countries. eSIM4Travel is an American provider covering 170 countries, and it competes almost entirely on price. We bought plans from both and tested them.
Want to skip straight to the numbers for your own destination? Our eSIM comparison tool shows every plan from both providers side by side, filtered by data size, validity, and country, even several countries at once.

How We Tested Airalo and eSIM4Travel
We bought every plan with our own money. No provider gave us free data, and no provider saw this comparison before it was published.
What we did with each provider:
- Bought a data plan on the provider's own website and recorded every step of the checkout
- Installed the eSIM on a real phone and noted whether data worked straight away
- Ran speed tests in Switzerland with direct visibility to a transmitter, so the local network was not the bottleneck
- Contacted customer support with a real problem and timed how long it took to reach a human
- Used the data until the package ran out, to see exactly when the connection stops
- Collected current prices for the same data sizes in 17 countries
The screenshots in this article are ours. You can see the full test notes in our complete Airalo review and our complete eSIM4Travel review.
One correction, made openly. Our eSIM4Travel review lists the absence of unlimited plans as a downside. That is no longer true. Our current price data shows eSIM4Travel unlimited plans in all 17 countries we checked. There are 3 and 7 day plans everywhere, 15 day plans in 15 countries, and 30 day plans in 11. We compare those plans below.
Airalo vs eSIM4Travel Prices: What the Numbers Show
eSIM4Travel costs about half of what Airalo charges for the same data. We compared both providers across 17 countries and 50 matching plans. eSIM4Travel was cheaper in 49 of them. The one exception was a single large plan in Mexico.
eSIM prices move constantly, so we have kept this section to the trend rather than a price list. The figures below describe how the two providers compare in general. For today's real numbers, use our eSIM comparison tool and pick your destination.
Which Provider Wins Which Type of Plan
| Plan type | Cheaper provider | Typical difference | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small plans, under 5 GB | Airalo by default | eSIM4Travel does not sell them at all | Airalo's small plan is poor value, at roughly $8 per GB |
| 5 GB | eSIM4Travel | Around 2 times cheaper | eSIM4Travel also gives 30 days validity against Airalo's 7 |
| 10 GB for 30 days | eSIM4Travel | Around 2 times cheaper | eSIM4Travel was cheaper in all 17 countries |
| 20 GB for 30 days | eSIM4Travel | Around 1.5 times cheaper | Airalo wins in Mexico only |
| Unlimited, 3 to 15 days | eSIM4Travel in most places | Varies a lot by country | Airalo wins in the Americas and the Gulf |
| Unlimited, 30 days | Airalo more often | Usually a modest gap | Airalo was cheaper in 6 of the 10 countries where both sell one |
Two things create that gap. eSIM4Travel simply prices lower, and it gives every fixed data plan 30 days of validity. Airalo sells the same data sizes in 7 day and 15 day versions as well, so a cheap looking Airalo plan often expires sooner than you expect. On a typical 10 GB plan, the saving with eSIM4Travel works out at roughly $8 to $10.
Where the Price Gap Is Widest
The size of the gap depends heavily on the destination. Grouping our 17 countries by how much more Airalo charges for the same fixed data plan:
| How big the gap is | Countries | What we would do |
|---|---|---|
| Airalo costs roughly 2 to 3 times more | Switzerland, USA, Turkey, Vietnam, Iceland, Egypt, United Kingdom, Canada | Buy eSIM4Travel unless you need Airalo's app or coverage |
| Airalo costs roughly 1.5 to 2 times more | Morocco, Norway, Japan, Australia, Dominican Republic, Tunisia | eSIM4Travel still clearly cheaper |
| Airalo costs a little more, under 1.5 times | Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Mexico | Close enough that Airalo's app may be worth the difference |
Switzerland is the widest gap we found, where Airalo charges close to three times more for the same data. Mexico is the narrowest, at a small premium. The gap itself varies that much from country to country, so it is always worth checking your own destination rather than assuming.
Where Airalo Fights Back: Unlimited Data
Unlimited plans are the one category where Airalo is genuinely competitive, and the pattern is consistent enough to be useful.
- On short unlimited plans of 3 to 15 days, eSIM4Travel is cheaper in most countries
- Airalo is reliably cheaper for unlimited data in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates. In those four markets eSIM4Travel's unlimited pricing rises steeply, sometimes to several times Airalo's price
- On 30 day unlimited plans the balance flips. Airalo was cheaper in 6 of the 10 countries where both providers sell one
- Airalo sells unlimited plans in 16 of our 17 countries. The USA is the gap, where we found no Airalo unlimited plan and no Airalo plan above 10 GB
In short: if you want a month of unlimited data, or you are heading to the Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, or the Gulf, check Airalo first. For everything else, eSIM4Travel is the cheaper buy.
Very Small Plans
If you need only a gigabyte or two, the choice is made for you. eSIM4Travel sells nothing under 5 GB. Airalo does, but the small plan is poor value: the same global 2 GB plan appears in every country we checked at roughly $8 per GB, several times its own price per GB on larger plans.
The practical advice is to buy the bigger plan. eSIM4Travel's 5 GB plans usually cost less than Airalo's 2 GB plan, and last 30 days instead of 15.
Not sure how much you actually need? Read our guides on what 2 GB of data is enough for and what 5 GB of data is enough for. We also cover what 10 GB of data is enough for. Or try our travel data calculator.
Verdict: Prices and Value
Winner: eSIM4Travel. On ordinary data plans this is not a close contest. It was cheaper in 49 of 50 comparisons, usually by about half, and its plans last longer as well. Airalo only makes sense on price in two cases: unlimited data for a month, or a trip to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Canada, or the UAE.
Because these prices shift week to week, check the live numbers before you buy. Our comparison tool does that for you, for example all Turkey plans with at least 10 GB and 30 days validity. If you simply want the lowest price anywhere, see our guide to the cheapest eSIM plans and our list of the cheapest countries for eSIM data.
Coverage and Offerings
Airalo
Airalo offers one of the widest coverages on the market, with eSIMs available in 211 countries. Its range includes:
- Local eSIMs for individual countries
- Regional eSIMs for continents or groups of countries
- Global eSIMs valid in more than 100 countries at once
That breadth makes Airalo a safe default for unusual destinations. If your route includes a country most providers skip, Airalo has a better chance of covering it.
eSIM4Travel
eSIM4Travel covers 170 countries with local and regional plans. It has no global plan, but its regional plans are strong:
- Regional plans for Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Europe
- A "Best Europe 35" plan covering 35 European countries, including the UK, Switzerland, and Turkey
- Sizes from 1 GB up to 50 GB on that European plan
For a trip around Europe, that single plan covers almost everywhere you are likely to go, including three countries that many "Europe" plans leave out.
Verdict: Coverage and Offerings
Winner: Airalo. 211 countries against 170 is a real advantage, and Airalo's global eSIM has no equivalent at eSIM4Travel. For ordinary tourist destinations the difference will not affect you, since both providers cover them.
Travelling through several countries? Our comparison tool handles that directly. Try Japan and Thailand on one plan with 10 GB or more and see what comes up.
Purchase Process
Airalo
Buying an eSIM from Airalo is relatively simple and does not require downloading an app. You can log in on the website with a Google account or other methods, which is convenient.
The process does contain a few unnecessary steps:
- You have to confirm that your phone supports eSIM
- You go through several tutorial pages explaining the whole eSIM process
Useful for a first timer, redundant for everyone else. A genuinely good touch: Airalo lets you share your eSIM QR code, which helps if you are buying for someone else.
eSIM4Travel
Buying from eSIM4Travel also happens entirely on the website, with no app to download. The steps are:
- Select a data plan for your destination
- Register and confirm your email address
- Pay with a credit card
We hit two small annoyances. There is no option to sign in with Google or a similar service. There is also no support for Google Pay or Apple Pay, so you type your card details in by hand.
On the positive side, the eSIM4Travel website is translated into many languages, including Polish. If English is not your first language, that matters more here than anywhere else, because the website is the only interface you get.
Verdict: Purchase Process
Winner: Airalo. Google sign-in, faster payment, and QR code sharing outweigh the extra tutorial screens. eSIM4Travel is close behind, and its multilingual website is a real advantage for some readers.

App and User Experience
Airalo
The Airalo app has more than 5 million downloads and a rating of 4.6 stars from 90,000 reviews. Our experience:
- The app is over 50 MB, which is fairly large
- Signing in is easy thanks to Google login
- The interface is intuitive and clear
You get a good overview of your active eSIMs, your remaining data, and top-up options. The disadvantage is that once your data runs out, the app stops working. It has no "zero-rating" (free access to the provider's own app without an active data plan). You need Wi-Fi or somebody's hotspot to buy more.
eSIM4Travel
eSIM4Travel has no mobile app at all. Everything happens on the website, which is well built and easy to use. That cuts both ways:
- In favour: nothing to download, no storage used, no updates
- Against: no quick overview of data usage on your phone, and no easy way to buy more data once you run out without Wi-Fi
The website is available in many languages, including Polish, so the lack of an app hurts less than it might.
Verdict: App and User Experience
Winner: Airalo. A working app that shows your remaining data is worth having, even at 50 MB. If you would rather not install anything, eSIM4Travel's website does the job, and neither provider helps you top up without Wi-Fi.

eSIM Installation
Airalo
Installing an eSIM from Airalo is straightforward, with one quirk:
- You need to take a screenshot of the page with the QR code, because there is no button for direct installation
- After installing the eSIM, data starts working immediately. No network selection, no restart
That immediate start is a real advantage when you have just landed and want to be online before you leave the airport.
eSIM4Travel
eSIM4Travel works almost identically, and needs no technical skill:
- The QR code appears on the website straight after purchase
- You screenshot it and use it during eSIM setup on your phone
- The eSIM starts working immediately, with no restart and no extra steps
One thing to remember: you have to switch on data roaming even in the country the eSIM is meant for. That applies to every eSIM provider, not just this one.
Verdict: eSIM Installation
Tie. Both providers show a QR code, both need a screenshot, and with both the data worked the moment installation finished. There is nothing to choose between them here.

Customer Support
Airalo
Airalo offers several ways to get in touch, but our experience was mixed:
- Airalo uses a chatbot as the first line of support, aimed mainly at installation problems
- Even after we said the eSIM was already installed, the chatbot insisted on walking through the basic installation steps
- Once we rejected the automated answers, we were put in a queue for a live operator
- The wait to reach an operator was 5 minutes, which suggests one agent handles several customers at once
- When our turn came, the agent did try to help
eSIM4Travel
Support is the strongest part of the eSIM4Travel service. Our experience:
- Easy access to live support. After a short exchange with the AI chatbot, we reached a real operator without a fight
- The operators are professional and genuinely try to solve the problem
- The tone is pleasant and balanced, neither stiff nor over-familiar
Support also told us something useful that we could not find on the website: you can switch between local networks if the signal is poor. In Switzerland, eSIM4Travel supports Salt and Sunrise, two of the largest local operators. We tried both. The download to upload ratio changed slightly, but both gave us full 4G speed.
Verdict: Customer Support
Winner: eSIM4Travel. Reaching a human took a short chatbot exchange at eSIM4Travel and a 5 minute queue at Airalo, and the advice we got was more useful. When you are abroad with no data, that difference matters. See also our ranking of the best eSIM customer support.

Connection Speed
Airalo
We tested Airalo in Switzerland with direct visibility to a transmitter:
- Download speed: 40 Mbps to 150 Mbps
- Upload speed: consistently around 40 Mbps
Airalo applies no artificial speed limits on 4G, which is good. The speed you get depends on the local network and the coverage where you are standing.
One curiosity: Airalo did not cut our data off at exactly 1 GB, but at 1.4 GB. We cannot say whether Airalo deliberately allows a small overrun or simply did not end the connection in time.
eSIM4Travel
Our eSIM4Travel results were very good:
- Download speed: 116 Mbps
- Upload speed: 89.5 Mbps
eSIM4Travel does not throttle or slow the connection and uses the full available 4G speed. The upload figure stands out. At almost 90 Mbps, the connection is far more symmetrical than most eSIMs we test. That helps if you upload photos and video or stream live.
Data stopped exactly when the limit ran out. Because there is no app, you cannot buy more data without finding Wi-Fi first.
Verdict: Connection Speed
Winner: eSIM4Travel. Airalo's peak of 150 Mbps is higher, but it swung between 40 and 150 Mbps, while eSIM4Travel held 116 Mbps down and 89.5 Mbps up. For video calls and uploads, the steadier and more symmetrical connection is the better one. Both are comfortably fast enough for normal use.

Customer Feedback
Airalo
Airalo's app store ratings are strong, but its Trustpilot score is not:
- iOS: 4.6 out of 5 from 61,000 reviews
- Android: 4.5 out of 5 from 72,000 reviews
- Trustpilot: 2.6 out of 5
The gap between the app stores and Trustpilot is striking. Unhappy customers most often report connection problems or sudden outages, which may say more about the local network than about Airalo itself.
eSIM4Travel
eSIM4Travel has 3.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 50 reviews. With so few reviews, treat that number as an early signal rather than a settled verdict. There are no app store ratings, because there is no app.
What customers praise most: the support, the simple setup, and reliable connections in most places. One reviewer had a connection problem in France, reached support by chat, and was sent a replacement eSIM free of charge.
What they complain about: patchy signal in some areas, and connection speed that swings from very good to very slow. One reviewer found that coverage in Bosnia worked well in some places and not at all in others.
Verdict: Customer Feedback
Winner: eSIM4Travel. 3.8/5 beats 2.6/5 on the same platform, and the complaints we found are about local coverage rather than the company. Be fair to both, though: Airalo's score rests on thousands of reviews, eSIM4Travel's on 50.
Which Provider is Better, Airalo or eSIM4Travel?
After comparing both providers across prices, coverage, speed, support, and daily use, here is how they stand.
Airalo excels in:
- Coverage: 211 countries, plus a global eSIM for more than 100 at once
- A well built app that shows your remaining data
- Google sign-in, fast checkout, and shareable QR codes
- Small plans, if you genuinely need less than 5 GB
- Unlimited data in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Canada, and the UAE, and on 30 day unlimited plans
eSIM4Travel excels in:
- Price: cheaper on 49 of the 50 fixed data plans we compared
- Validity: its 5, 10, and 20 GB plans all run for 30 days
- Customer support: quick access to a helpful human
- A steady, symmetrical connection at 116 Mbps down and 89.5 Mbps up
- A website translated into many languages, including Polish
Overall Verdict
Winner: eSIM4Travel. It costs roughly half as much for the same data, and the validity is longer. Support answered faster, and the connection held steadier in our tests. Airalo is the more finished product, with a better app and far wider coverage, but you pay a large premium for that polish.
Choose Airalo if:
- You are travelling somewhere in the 41 countries eSIM4Travel does not cover
- You want one eSIM for a multi-continent trip, using the global plan
- You want to watch your data usage in an app
- You need less than 5 GB, or unlimited data for a month
- You are going to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Canada, or the UAE and want unlimited data
Choose eSIM4Travel if:
- Price is what matters most, which is true for most travelers
- You want 5 GB or more with 30 days of validity
- You would rather not install another app
- You want support that reaches a human quickly
- You want the website and support in your own language
