Buying from Airalo

We signed in with Google, picked a plan and paid, all in the browser. A compatibility check and several tutorial pages slowed us down, and the QR code has no download button. Our Airalo review shows each screen.

• Payments: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, UnionPay and JCB, PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay in some countries, and Alipay in the app [6].
• Currencies and tax: 16 currencies, with VAT or similar taxes included in the displayed price [2].

Buying from eSIM4Travel

eSIM4Travel sells only on its website, which is translated into 41 languages, including Czech and Polish [14]. The four steps are simple: pick a plan, register, pay, get the eSIM. Our eSIM4Travel review covers each one.

• Registration: first name, last name, phone number and email [11]. We confirmed our email before we could pay, and found no quick sign-in in our test; a Google button appeared on the login page when we checked on 7 Oct 2026.
• Payments: the terms name card or PayPal, in US dollars [11]. The footer adds Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, UnionPay and Apple Pay [14], but we saw no Apple Pay or Google Pay button and typed the card by hand.
• Delivery: the QR code is stored in your account and emailed to you [11].
• Taxes are not mentioned anywhere on the site, so it is unclear whether the price shown is final [11].

Verdict: Airalo wins by default, because eSIM4Travel has no app. In practice the gap is smaller than it sounds: both lock you out of the store once your data runs out, so either way you need Wi-Fi to buy more.

The Airalo app

The app handles everything: buying, installing, top-ups and alerts at 25% and 10% of data left. Auto-renewal buys the next package when 10% is left [8], and with New Airalo one installed eSIM holds all your packages. It is over 50 MB, and it stopped working the moment our plan ran out.

eSIM4Travel without an app

eSIM4Travel has no iOS or Android app, even though its terms mention one [11]. The website does the job: buy and top up from any browser, see the QR code under My eSIM, and check your data use in the account [14].

The catch showed at the end of our test. The data stopped exactly when the allowance ran out, and without an app we could not reach the store. Airalo's app behaved the same way, so for both, buy the next plan before you hit zero.

Verdict: Airalo wins by a point, thanks to its in-app install option. Both eSIMs worked right away from a QR code screenshot. eSIM4Travel has no app wizard, so you add the eSIM in your phone settings yourself.

Airalo installation and when the plan starts

Airalo has a direct install from the app, a QR code or manual entry. We used the QR code, and data flowed with nothing to configure. Most packages start on first connection at the destination, but some start on installation [10], and partners may recycle an eSIM left unused, often after 90 days.

1. Open My eSIM on the website and take a screenshot of the QR code, or use the emailed copy [11].
2. Add the eSIM in your phone settings by scanning the code.
3. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line. Ours connected at once with no restart.
4. Activate within 90 days. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects at the destination [15].

Each eSIM4Travel eSIM works on one device only [15]. Airalo lists the compatible phones and the excluded models [7]. Verdict: eSIM4Travel wins clearly, with the best support experience in our tests. Both start with a bot, but eSIM4Travel needs one click to reach a person, with no queue. Airalo's bot kept pushing installation fixes until we rejected its answers.

The bot ran through installation fixes even after we said the eSIM was installed. Only after we said its replies did not help were we queued for a person, who seemed to handle many chats at once. Contact routes: 24/7 chat, WhatsApp on +1 984 224 7256 and [email protected] [1].

eSIM4Travel support in our test

We answered the bot once, clicked to talk to an agent, and a real person joined right away. After fixing our issue, the agent reminded us that our Swiss plan ran on both Salt and Sunrise, so we could switch if one had a poor signal. The tone was pleasant and businesslike.

Contact routes: 24/7 chat on the website [14], [email protected] [12] and a contact form. There is no phone line or WhatsApp, and the Help Center links were placeholders when we checked. eSIM4Travel shares the top spot in our ranking of eSIM customer support.

Verdict: eSIM4Travel wins by a point. Neither throttled its fixed plan, and both tests ran in Switzerland. eSIM4Travel was steadier and its upload was more than twice Airalo's, which helps with video calls and photo backups.

Download ranged from 40 to 150 Mbps and upload held at about 40 Mbps. The network gave us 40% more data than we paid for before cutting off. On unlimited plans, Airalo's fair use policy gives 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps until the reset [3].

eSIM4Travel speed in our test

eSIM4Travel ran at 116 Mbps down and 89.5 Mbps up on 4G, with both networks on the plan delivering full speed. Its unlimited plans have the same rule as Airalo's: 3 GB a day at high speed, then up to 1 Mbps [15]. Day passes drop to 128 kbps once the day's data is used. Unlike Airalo, eSIM4Travel's terms contain no fair-use clause at all [11]; the limit is printed only on plan pages.

Over longer trips the medians are $27.50 against $18.75 for 7 days, $49.00 against $37.07 for 15 days, and $72.00 against $63.00 for 30 days. For most trips, a fixed plan is cheaper still: a 30-day eSIM4Travel unlimited plan costs 8.3 times its own 10 GB plan.

Regional and global plans

• Europe: eSIM4Travel's Best Europe 41 covers 41 countries from $0.69 per GB, with 10 GB for $8.81 [17]. Airalo's Europe plan starts at $5.00 for its smallest package.
• Global: Airalo's global eSIM starts at $8.50 for 1 GB over 7 days. eSIM4Travel's Global 72 costs $1.80 for the same [18], but covers fewer countries and has no unlimited option.
• Calls: only Airalo sells plans with minutes and texts, at a median 27% more than the same data-only plan.
• Loyalty: Airalo gives 5% to 10% back in Airmoney [9]. eSIM4Travel has no loyalty scheme, but ran a 12% discount banner when we checked [14].

"Worked in" is separate from our test score: travelers tell us whether an eSIM worked in a country, yes or no. eSIM4Travel's sample is the smallest of the 14 providers, so treat its country figures as a hint.

Where Airalo works and where it does not

Airalo sells local eSIMs for 200+ destinations and picks a partner network for each [1]. It is reliable in Singapore, Japan, the Netherlands, Australia, Vietnam and New Zealand, all at 90% or more. It is weak in Spain (56%), Italy (55%), Switzerland (49%) and Mexico (45%), and in London it worked for only 7 of 34 travelers.

Where eSIM4Travel works and where it does not

eSIM4Travel says it covers 160+ countries and regions [14]; we counted 158 single-country destinations, plus regional bundles. It worked in all 21 reports from Western Europe, and in Canada, Albania, Switzerland and France without a single failure. The US (12 of 15) and Bosnia (3 of 5) are its weakest reported spots.

Some places have no eSIM4Travel plan at all, among them Lebanon, Myanmar, Bhutan, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Kosovo and Papua New Guinea. Airalo vs eSIM4Travel terms and conditions

Verdict: eSIM4Travel has the friendlier refund policy, Airalo the clearer terms. eSIM4Travel refunds unused plans for 2 months and covers network outages. Its terms, though, name no governing law, disclaim almost all liability and let the refund policy be rewritten without notice.

Airalo's contract is with AirGSM Pte Ltd in Singapore [1]. eSIM4Travel's terms name "eSIM4Travel Inc", while the footer says it is a brand of FreshQ Inc. in California; none of its three documents shows a date [11] [14].

• Airalo: after activation you qualify only if Airalo's error or a retired service makes the eSIM unusable. Ask within 30 days; card refunds take up to 30 business days under the terms [2].
• eSIM4Travel: contact the chat or [email protected] with your order number within 2 months. Incompatible or locked phones also get a full refund. Nothing comes back once more than 10% of the data is used, and money returns in 5 to 7 days [12].
• Your data: eSIM4Travel names PayPal as its card processor, gives no retention periods and sends privacy questions to an address on a different domain [13]. Airalo stores data worldwide, also without retention periods [4].
