Key Takeaways

Key takeaways

Based on 109 traveler reports from Austria and our tests, the best option for most trips is Maya Mobile: it worked well for 30 of 30 travelers reporting from Austria. Nomad (18 of 21) worked for every Vienna reviewer, but we never reached a human at its help desk. Jetpac (5 of 5) suits cross-border road trips, with calls and hotspot, but costs more. Ubigi (16 of 17) had the strongest Alpine reports, but its support never answered. Holafly (11 of 12) is the easiest unlimited plan, but our test found its speed capped from the start. eSIM4Travel is the cheapest here, with 2 reports so far, both positive.

The best eSIM for Austria depends on where you go: a city break in Vienna is easy for almost every provider, while the Alps in Tyrol, Salzburg and Vorarlberg are where the three networks part ways. Austria's people and roads sit in the Danube valley and the Alpine valleys, and the mountains in the west and south leave gaps that make the network behind your eSIM matter more than in a flat country. Third-party guides from 2026 rank A1 first for Alpine reach and Drei weakest, and the reviews we read fit that pattern: the only weak-signal reports come from the Rhine Valley on the Swiss border and from a reviewer near Salzburg, not from Vienna.

Two technical facts narrow the choice. 3G is gone: Magenta switched it off in June 2024, Drei in April 2025 and A1 in June 2025, so an old 3G-only phone falls back to 2G and a modern phone needs 4G or 5G [7]. And every Austrian SIM, physical or eSIM, must be registered with ID under the telecoms act, so there is no anonymous local SIM [2]. A travel eSIM needs no Austrian ID, which is the main reason to buy one before you land. Opensignal measured Austrian highways and railways as better connected than the national average in 2023, which helps if you arrive by train or drive in from Germany or Italy.

If you still want a local SIM, Vienna and Salzburg airports have kiosks, but third-party guides report higher prices there than in town; a Trafik (tobacconist), a supermarket checkout or an operator shop is the better place. Below you will find 109 traveler reports sorted by provider, our own test findings, the plans in our comparison tool, and what the reports say about Vienna and Salzburg.

Best eSIM Providers for Austria

The best eSIM for Austria at a glance

How well each provider's eSIM works in Austria

The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in Austria. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

How we got these numbers: we read 109 public customer reviews that mention Austria or a place in it, published between February 2023 and August 2026, and counted a report as "worked" when the reviewer said the eSIM connected, even with small hiccups. We treat 20 or more reports as strong evidence, 3 to 19 as limited, and fewer than 3 as too few to judge. A count like 16 of 17 means the eSIM worked well for 16 of the 17 travelers who reported from here; each provider section says what went wrong for the rest. The Vefru test score is a separate number: our own hands-on test of the provider, run outside Austria for every provider except GoMoWorld, which we tested in Austria, so it says how the provider behaves, not how the network performs here. Local operator prices in the text were checked on 25 September 2026; provider ratings, the plan tables and the price-per-GB chart are live and update on their own.

Maya Mobile eSIM in our hands

Maya Mobile testing preview Maya Mobile testing speed 1 Maya Mobile testing speed 2 Maya Mobile testing support

Based on the reports, Maya Mobile is the best option for most trips to Austria of three days or more: one global unlimited plan that connects on arrival and keeps working across borders. It worked well for 30 of 30 travelers who reported from Austria (100%), strong evidence and the only clean sheet among the providers with more than a handful of reports. The successes are mostly multi-country trips, by train and car through Germany, Czechia, Hungary, Slovenia and Switzerland, with Vienna and Innsbruck named in the texts, families on four devices, and a reviewer who used it for six months across Europe.

No report counted as a failure, but the texts show what a hiccup looks like. One traveler in April 2026 could not get online in Austria until Maya's support found a wrong setting on his phone, and solved it in minutes. Another in May 2025 had trouble connecting in Austria on a Europe plan before it started working, and received a refund. A reviewer in January 2026 who crossed Budapest, Vienna and Slovenia wrote: "It worked well most of the time, though coverage was weaker in a few areas compared to other providers." Two others said the speed could be better, and one in September 2025 found it dearer than the local prepaid SIM she used for five weeks.

What sets Maya apart is the plan: there is no Austria plan, only a global unlimited plan for 3, 7, 14 or 30 days, with 5 GB a day at full speed before it slows, hotspot included and a cruise version for ships. In our test that daily reset made it the fairest unlimited plan we tried, and the eSIM arrived by email and installed in about two minutes once we set the APN. It suits trips of a week or more, heavy users and anyone visiting several countries. The drawbacks: nothing shorter than three days or smaller than unlimited, so a two-day Vienna break pays for data it will not use, and support goes through a WhatsApp bot before a human. Its page did not name an Austrian network when we checked in September 2026. Our Maya Mobile review has the test details. Maya Mobile is sold on its website and in its app.

Nomad eSIM in our hands

Nomad testing preview Nomad testing speed 1 Nomad testing speed 2 Nomad testing support

Nomad is the pick for Vienna and for travelers who want a fixed-data plan and will not need the help desk. It worked well for 18 of 21 travelers who reported from Austria (86%), limited evidence but the second-largest sample here, and every one of its Vienna, Graz and Bregenz reports was positive. The successes describe automatic network switching when driving from Austria into Germany, train trips, a motorcycle tour through Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Italy and Austria, and signal "in and outside of metropolitan areas". One reviewer in July 2026 wrote: "Excellent signal everywhere we were in Graz and Vienna."

The three misses were not dead zones but unstable data. In June 2026 a repeat customer in Austria kept losing the connection, sometimes for half an hour, and barely used her 20 GB. Another in June 2026 found it spotty and slow through Czechia and Austria. The worst case, in May 2026, could not connect to any of the three Austrian networks at all, after also fighting a conflict with his home provider in France. A Samsung owner said the setup was not easy, and several reviewers had to restart the phone when crossing a border.

Nomad's Austria plans in our comparison tool run from 1 GB for 3 or 7 days to 50 GB for 30 days, plus unlimited plans for 3 to 10 days that give 2 GB a day at full speed and then slow. The Austria plans are listed as A1 in our comparison tool, and an August 2026 third-party audit of Nomad's page lists A1 and Drei. Europe and Global plans, a free 1 GB trial and add-on data round it out, and you have 30 days to activate an Austria plan. The app has a home-screen data widget, which no other provider we tested offers. Price sits around the market average, a little dearer in Europe than elsewhere. The drawback is support: in our test the bot looped and never handed us to a human, so first-time users should read our Nomad review before relying on it. Nomad sells through its app.

Jetpac eSIM in our hands

Jetpac testing outdoor Jetpac testing speed 1 Jetpac testing speed 2 Jetpac testing support

Jetpac is the pick for a road trip that crosses Austria on the way somewhere else, because its reviews from Austria are all multi-country drives and it adds calls and an unlimited hotspot. It worked well for 5 of 5 travelers who reported from Austria (100%), limited evidence. The reports cover a month of Euro 2024 travel through Croatia, Austria, Slovenia, Czechia and Germany, a road trip from Czechia through Austria and Slovenia to Croatia, and a Switzerland, Austria and Germany trip; one reviewer in November 2024 wrote: "It worked with no issues out of the box in Switzerland, Austria and Germany."

There were no misses, but one three-star review from November 2024 rated coverage and speed in Austria only "fair", on a worldwide plan and a 4G-only phone, and said support on WhatsApp went quiet for days once his problem in Finland dragged on. Our own test matched that: the first reply in the in-app chat took minutes and was technical, the app is rough and its usage counter lags.

Jetpac sells Austria packs from 3 GB to 40 GB for 1 to 30 days, unlimited Austria plans for 3 to 30 days that slow after 3 GB in a day, and Europe and Global packs; our comparison tool lists its Austria plans as 5G. An August 2026 third-party audit lists A1 and Drei as its Austrian networks. Three extras set it apart: WhatsApp, Maps, Uber and Grab keep working after the data runs out on packs of 3 GB or more, calls are sold as in-app voice packs, and a delayed flight unlocks a free lounge. It suits frequent flyers and drivers who tether a laptop. The drawback is price: Jetpac is among the more expensive providers in our comparison for 3 GB to 20 GB, though its unlimited plans sit at the market average. Our Jetpac review has the test details, and Jetpac emails the eSIM after purchase.

Ubigi is the travel eSIM brand of Paris operator Transatel, with one reusable eSIM for 200+ destinations. Data was fast in our test, and its 3 GB, 10 GB and 30-day unlimited plans are cheap. Its weak point is support: a chatbot that ends in an email ticket, with no live agent.

Ubigi eSIM in our hands

Ubigi testing preview Ubigi testing speed 1 Ubigi testing speed 2 Ubigi testing support

Ubigi is the pick for mountain trips and for anyone who wants unlimited data without paying much, as long as they never need the help desk. It worked well for 16 of 17 travelers who reported from Austria (94%), limited evidence, with 4 of 4 in Vienna and the only review in our files that describes the Alps: a traveler in May 2026 called the connection in Austria "excellent" even "in remote locations near the Alps mountains", with the Ubigi logo appearing the moment he landed. Other successes cover Munich to Salzburg, Vienna and Salzburg on an iPad, and ten-day Europe trips where the eSIM switched country on its own.

The one miss was speed, not signal: in July 2026 a reviewer in Salzburg found the data so slow it was almost unusable, in a spot where everyone around him had good reception. Two other low ratings describe the same pattern. A reviewer crossing from Austria into Germany in July 2026 lost data for a full day until the eSIM caught up, and a driver in the Rhine Valley between Mäder and St. Gallen in May 2026 had a weak, unstable signal on most of the route, enough for maps but not for calls over WhatsApp. One reviewer called the setup tedious and confusing.

Ubigi's Austria plans in our comparison tool come in 3, 10, 25 and 50 GB for 7 to 30 days, plus unlimited for 7 or 30 days [11]; there is no 5 GB or 20 GB size, and Europe and World plans fill the gaps. An August 2026 third-party audit lists A1 and Drei as its networks here and calls its unlimited the cheapest in Austria; in our comparison Ubigi's unlimited plans are among the cheapest and its fixed plans sit just below the market average. The eSIM is reusable, you can choose a local or home IP, hotspot is allowed, and the app stayed online at zero balance in our test, so you can buy more data without Wi-Fi. The drawbacks are a clumsy website and app and a support ticket that went unanswered for 24 hours in our test, the worst outcome we had; our Ubigi review explains why we still rate the network. Ubigi sends the QR code by email within a minute.

Holafly eSIM in our hands

Holafly testing outdoor Holafly testing support Holafly testing support 2 Holafly testing speed

Holafly is the pick for travelers who want to stop thinking about data, with one caveat: in our test its speed was capped from the start, before any data was used, at a fraction of what a local SIM got on the same cell. That is enough for maps, messaging, browsing and streaming, and slow for large downloads, uploads, cloud backups and laptop work. It worked well for 11 of 12 travelers who reported from Austria (92%), limited evidence, and the successes are car trips: France, Italy, Austria and Germany by road with "great signal the whole time", twelve days through five countries, and a stay in Vienna where one reviewer in May 2026 wrote "the connection was stable throughout my stay in Vienna." A traveler in August 2026 named Hallstatt and still had full speed on the move.

The one miss was total. In May 2026 a teacher on a school trip installed a five-day plan before travel, and it did not work at all in Austria; the chat bot, then a human agent's instructions, did not fix it, and he got a refund and bought another eSIM that worked. Nobody else reported a failure, and two reviewers said the installation was so easy they thought something had gone wrong.

Holafly sells only unlimited plans for Austria, priced by the day from 1 to 90 days, on Drei [9], the network third-party guides rank weakest in the Alps. Holafly's own page caps the hotspot at 1 GB a day [9]; an August 2026 third-party audit put the limit lower, so check the page before you rely on tethering. There are no top-ups (you buy a new eSIM), installation is one tap with no QR code, and support reached a quick, helpful human in our test. Price: Holafly's unlimited plans are among the more expensive in our comparison. Our comparison tool had no Holafly plan for Austria at the time of writing, so there is no plan table here. Our Holafly review shows the speed test behind the cap. Holafly sells on its website and app.

eSIM4Travel is the pick for anyone who wants the cheapest data in Austria and a help desk with real people. Only 2 travelers have reported from Austria so far, both positive, which is too few to judge the network record; the case rests on price and our test. In our comparison it is the cheapest provider for Austria at every size from 3 GB to 10 GB, and usually the cheapest overall. In our test a short bot handed us to a human in one click, who solved the problem and suggested switching network; the eSIM came by email, installed from a QR code and worked right away.

The two reports are a German-speaking reviewer in September 2024 who used it in Austria, Switzerland, France, Germany, Poland, England and Ireland and said it worked very well, with reception often better after picking the operator by hand, and one more positive report. Neither describes a failure.

Its Austria plans in our comparison tool run from 500 MB for a day to 50 GB for 30 days, with unlimited plans for 3 to 30 days that slow after 3 GB a day, plus Best Europe and Global plans. The product is named for its networks: eSIM4Travel's own site lists Magenta, Drei and A1 for Austria [10], the only provider here with all three, which is why the manual network switch that reviewer used is worth knowing. The drawbacks: no app, no Google Pay, card details typed by hand, and no way to top up without Wi-Fi once the data runs out. Our eSIM4Travel review has the full test. eSIM4Travel sells on its website only.

Airalo eSIM in our hands

Airalo testing outdoor Airalo testing speed 1 Airalo testing speed 2 Airalo testing support

Airalo is the choice if you need a plan with minutes and texts for Austria, and otherwise a market-price option with a weaker record than the picks above. It worked well for 8 of 10 travelers who reported from Austria (80%), limited evidence. The misses and the low ratings describe the same thing, data that dropped mid-trip: a driver in July 2026 lost signal between Italy and Austria and took a 40-minute detour, another traveler's Europe plan quit after one day in Austria, and a repeat customer said his eSIM simply stopped working on his last Austrian holiday. One long-time user in July 2026 said Austria was the only country where booking gave him trouble, because of a certification step. The successes are short and happy: Austria plus Italy and Mexico, a daughter's study stay, a travel advisor with five years of use.

Airalo's Servus Austria plans run from 1 GB to 50 GB for 3 to 30 days, and the Servus Austria+ versions add calls and texts; there is no unlimited plan for Austria, only in its Europe and Discover plans with a daily allowance [12]. Three 2026 third-party sources say it runs on Magenta here. Price sits at the market average and is never the cheapest. In our test purchase and installation were the easiest of the big names, which is why beginners still choose it; our Airalo review weighs that against the record. Airalo sells on its website and app.

The one miss is the only negative Vienna report in our files: in May 2025 a reviewer on a European plan found data "either wasn't working or was extremely slow" in Vienna and much of Austria, while it worked in Hungary. The four successes are two-week trips through Germany and Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Austria, and Paris, Germany, Austria and Prague, with speeds described as excellent.

Its Austria plans run from 1 GB to 50 GB with validities from 7 to 180 days, plus a one-day unlimited pass, and its Cruise and Europe plans add ships and ferries. We could not confirm which Austrian network it uses. The app stays partly online when the data runs out, so you can buy a new plan without Wi-Fi, and a human answered our support chat at once; our GigSky review has the details. The finding against it is price: GigSky is the most expensive provider in our comparison overall, even though its entry plans are at market in the big European countries. GigSky requires its app to buy.

ByteSIM eSIM in our hands

ByteSIM testing preview ByteSIM testing speed 1 ByteSIM testing speed 2 ByteSIM testing support

ByteSIM is for experienced users who want a local payment method and a huge choice of plan sizes, not for a first eSIM. It worked well for 3 of 4 travelers who reported from Austria (75%), limited evidence. The miss, in October 2024, was a 5 GB Austria plan that would not connect on arrival, worked for a while after support's suggestions failed, then dropped out whenever the reviewer moved: "I ended up using only 490 MB of the 5GB I bought." Another reviewer had trouble connecting after crossing from Bavaria into Austria and needed WhatsApp support once back on Wi-Fi. The successes are a Swiss reviewer who buys unlimited for Germany, Austria, Italy and Canada, and a 2023 rail trip through Vienna.

ByteSIM's Austria range in our comparison tool is the widest here: daily plans from 1 GB a day, fixed plans from 500 MB to 300 GB, unlimited plans, all for 1 to 30 days, with longer validity costing more. Its Austria page did not name a network when we checked in September 2026, and says metered plans are throttled after their cap [13]. There are no top-ups. The finding against it is support: its WhatsApp line promised a reply in minutes and gave none in our test, and the checkout asked for a full postal address; see our ByteSIM review. Price is at the market average, cheaper for short trips. ByteSIM emails the eSIM after purchase.

Global YO eSIM in our hands

Global YO is the budget choice for big data, held back here only by evidence. One traveler has reported from Austria, and it worked: a first-time eSIM user in February 2025 wrote of "Good coverage across UK, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and Turkey in my experience", with decent speeds on its day plans. One report is too few to judge.

Its Austria plans run from 1 GB for 3 days to 100 GB for 60 days, with Day Plans of 3 GB a day, plus Europe Explorer and Global Explorer bundles; there is no unlimited plan. We could not confirm which Austrian network it uses. Global YO is the second-cheapest provider in our comparison, and cheaper the bigger the plan. Purchase is app-only, the eSIM is then emailed, and support took ten minutes for a template reply in our test; our Global YO review has the details. Global YO sells through its app.

Roamless suits light users who hop between many countries and want credit that never expires. One traveler has reported from Austria, and it worked: a couple in October 2025 used it for five months across the UK and Europe, Austria included, and wrote "It picked up providers the moment we landed or drove over borders." One report is too few to judge.

Its Austria plans in our comparison tool are 30-day packs from under 1 GB to 200 GB, a no-expiration pay-as-you-go option and a free trial for new users; the Austria plans are listed as Drei in our comparison tool, and Roamless says it does not throttle. It also offers in-app calls and an optional second number. In our test the preselected APN did not work until we picked the Proximus profile and switched Wi-Fi off, and the app kept a trickle of data at zero balance; our Roamless review explains the fix. Price is at the market average for small plans and dear from 10 GB up. Roamless sells through its app.

GoMoWorld eSIM in our hands

GoMoWorld testing preview GoMoWorld testing speed 1 GoMoWorld testing speed 2 GoMoWorld testing support

GoMoWorld is the one provider we tested in Austria itself, and it gave us the fastest result of any provider with no sign of throttling, but there are no traveler reports from Austria yet, so we cannot rank it on coverage. On our Austrian 5G cell the hotspot worked and nothing slowed after heavy use, which is why it scores highest for speed in our tests.

Its Austria plans in our comparison tool are 4 GB for 7 days and 20, 50 or 75 GB for 30 days, plus a Europe bundle; there is no unlimited plan and no calls. Its Austria page did not name a network when we checked in September 2026 [14]. Two quirks cost it its place: the eSIM is app-only, one account per device, and nothing happens until you press Start in the app, which is the usual cause of "it does not work". Humans answer only in office hours; our GoMoWorld review explains the Start button. Price sits just below the market average, best from 5 GB up. GoMoWorld sells through its app.

Saily eSIM in our hands

Saily testing outdoor Saily testing speed 1 Saily testing speed 2 Saily testing support

Saily is the choice for a first eSIM, with the most polished app, the smoothest installation and one of the two best help desks in our test, but there are no traveler reports from Austria yet. The one review in our files that names Austria, from March 2026, describes an easy install of a Europe plan on an unlocked iPhone and says nothing about the connection.

Its Austria plans in our comparison tool are 1 GB for 7 days, 3 to 20 GB for 30 days and unlimited for 15 days with 5 GB a day at full speed; Austria is also inside its 35-country Europe plan [15]. A third-party field test observed it on Magenta. A free VPN-style virtual location and an optional US number come with the app. The finding against it is price: Saily is among the most expensive providers in our comparison where people actually travel; our Saily review weighs that against the app. Saily sells through its app only.

Best eSIM for Vienna, Salzburg and the Alps

Vienna is the only place in Austria with enough reports to name a pick of its own, and Nomad and Ubigi share a perfect record there. Salzburg has three reports, all Ubigi, and the Alps have more network data than traveler data. Maya Mobile, the overall pick, has Vienna and Innsbruck reports, both positive.

Where you are goingWhat the reports showOur pick
ViennaMaya Mobile 2/2, Nomad 4/4, Ubigi 4/4, Holafly 2/2, GigSky 0/1, ByteSIM 1/1Nomad (Ubigi worked just as often; Nomad has the larger country sample and the better app)

Mädertoo few reportsCountry pick applies

Best eSIM for Vienna

Nomad is the pick for Vienna: all 4 of its Vienna reports worked, Ubigi matches that with 4 of 4, and nobody else has 3 reports in the city. Nomad's Vienna reviews describe excellent signal across Graz and Vienna, an easy installation that "worked well the whole time", and good reception in and outside the centre on a trip that also took in England, Amsterdam and Czechia. Ubigi's four describe fast, adequate data on a ten-day Brussels, Athens and Vienna trip, a Paris to Venice run with Vienna in the middle, and an iPad that connected without fuss. Maya Mobile's two Vienna reports are a ten-day Budapest, Vienna and Slovenia trip and a reviewer who used maps and VoIP calls in the city, and Holafly's two describe a stable connection throughout a Vienna stay, with its speed capped in our test.

The only Vienna miss is GigSky: in May 2025 a reviewer found data not working or extremely slow in Vienna and much of Austria on a European plan. One Ubigi reviewer in August 2026 complained about a tedious setup and slow speed before a Vienna trip, but counted as a success. Nobody in our files describes the arrival at Vienna airport, though an Ubigi reviewer who landed elsewhere in Austria in April 2026 saw the eSIM connect the moment he switched the phone on.

Best eSIM for Salzburg

No provider has 3 reports from Salzburg, so the country pick, Maya Mobile, applies; the three reports we have are all Ubigi, and they split. A reviewer traveling from Munich to Salzburg in June 2026 called the network very good the whole way, and another who used an iPad in Vienna and Salzburg in May 2026 had no problems. The third, in July 2026, had data in Salzburg so slow it was almost unusable, even though the people around him had good reception; Ubigi's reply suggested picking a different local network by hand, which is the fix worth remembering for any provider that rides more than one network.

For the Alps we have network data rather than reports. The weak-signal report in our files comes from the Rhine Valley between Mäder and St. Gallen on the Swiss border, where an Ubigi user in May 2026 had a usable but unstable signal on most of the route; the one Alpine success is a Ubigi user who kept a connection in remote places near the mountains in April 2026. No traveler has reported from the Tyrol or Vorarlberg ski resorts yet; third-party 2026 guides rank A1 first for Alpine reach and Drei weakest, and A1's own site lets you check 5G at an address before you book [6]. That favours Nomad, Ubigi and Jetpac (A1 and Drei, per an August 2026 third-party audit) and eSIM4Travel (all three networks, per its own site) over Holafly, which uses Drei alone.

Local SIM Cards and Operator eSIMs in Austria

A local SIM wins on price from the first day if you are willing to register with ID, and a travel eSIM wins when you want data working before you land without any paperwork. A1's own tourist eSIM, B.free Travel S, cost €12.90 as of September 2026 for 50 GB (20 GB usable elsewhere in the EU), 2,000 minutes and texts in Austria and the EU, valid two weeks, delivered by email and activated on registration [3]; the Travel L version cost €17.90 for four weeks with the same allowances [4]. That is more data for less money than any travel eSIM in our comparison, and it comes with a +43 number.

The rule to know: every Austrian SIM, physical or eSIM, must be registered under the Telekommunikationsgesetz, so there are no anonymous prepaid cards [2]. A1 does it free online and in its shops [2]; third-party guides report that some sellers charge up to €20 for in-store registration, so an online VideoID or an operator shop is the safer route. A travel eSIM needs no Austrian ID at all.

Other operator offers, as of September 2026: A1's B.free Wertkarte starter cost €9.90 and currently advertised 60 GB with 2,000 minutes and 2,000 texts for the first four weeks, with no activation cost, ordered online or in a shop [2]; A1's data-only B.free Internet Startpaket eSIM cost €9.90 with 10 GB for four weeks [5]. Third-party guides from August 2026 list Magenta's Klax prepaid at €9.90 for 30 GB with 1,000 minutes and texts, €14.90 for 40 GB and €29.90 for unlimited, each for four weeks, plus a €10 activation fee; Drei's tourist packs at €7 to €30 for 30 days; and supermarket SIMs like Lidl Connect (100 GB for €9.50 a month, on Drei) and HoT at Hofer (60 GB for €9.90, on Magenta). We could not verify those third-party prices ourselves.

Where to buy: a Trafik, the checkouts at Hofer, Lidl, Spar, Billa and Penny, electronics chains, or one of A1's shops and the other operator stores. Vienna and Salzburg airports sell SIMs at kiosks, at prices third-party guides put above town. A local SIM beats a travel eSIM for a stay of two weeks or more, for anyone who needs an Austrian number, and for heavy data; a travel eSIM beats it for a short stay of up to about 20 GB, when you want data on landing and no registration.

Mobile Networks in Austria

A1 is the network to want in the mountains, Magenta leads on 5G and city speed, and Drei is the cheapest with the weakest footprint; in the cities all three are near-equivalent. Austria has exactly three network operators, A1 Telekom Austria, Magenta Telekom and Drei; every other brand is a reseller on one of them, and the regulator RTR links to all three operators' official coverage maps [1]. A1 has the largest share of consumer SIMs, then Magenta, then Drei.

Coverage: Magenta's own newsroom puts its LTE coverage at 98.6% of the population and 5G at about 80% at the end of 2025 [7]. Third-party guides citing A1 put its 4G coverage near 99%, and A1's site offers a 5G check by address [6]. Drei publishes its own coverage map and was the first operator here with 5G standalone [8]. According to Opensignal's first-quarter 2025 figures, as relayed by third-party guides, A1 won coverage experience, Drei won the overall award on speed and latency, and Magenta won 5G coverage; in Opensignal's 2026 global awards Magenta was named a global leader for consistent quality, the only Austrian operator on that list. Opensignal's 2023 measurements also found A1 fastest on highways and railways, which are better served than the national average.

Which provider rides which network: eSIM4Travel names Magenta, Drei and A1 on its own site [10], and Holafly names Drei alone [9]. A third-party audit of provider pages in August 2026 lists Nomad, Ubigi and Jetpac on A1 and Drei, and three 2026 sources report Airalo on Magenta; a field test observed Saily on Magenta. Nomad's Austria plans are listed as A1 and Roamless's as Drei in our comparison tool. Maya Mobile, ByteSIM, GoMoWorld and Yesim do not name a network, and we could not confirm GigSky's or Global YO's. If your eSIM rides more than one network, you can switch operator by hand in the phone settings, which several reviewers here did when the signal faded.

What it means for a trip: 3G is switched off on all three networks since June 2025, so your phone needs 4G or 5G [7], and 5G makes a difference mainly in Vienna and the larger cities. For a ski week in Tyrol, Salzburg or Vorarlberg, a provider on A1 is the safer choice; for Vienna, any of the picks will do.

How to Set Up an eSIM for Austria

Install at home on Wi-Fi, keep the plan off until you land, and know which settings your provider expects; almost every miss in the Austrian reports that was not a network problem came down to one of those.

  1. Check that your phone is unlocked and eSIM-capable; our list of phones that take an eSIM covers the common models. If this is your first eSIM, our first-eSIM guide walks through the whole purchase.
  2. Buy a few days before you fly. GoMoWorld, Saily, Roamless, GigSky and Global YO deliver only through their app, so you need the app installed; eSIM4Travel, Airalo, Maya Mobile, Ubigi, Yesim, ByteSIM, Jetpac, Nomad and Holafly email a QR code.
  3. Install at home. With almost every provider the plan starts on first connection in Austria, not at installation; the exceptions are Yesim, whose plan started at purchase in our test, GoMoWorld, which does nothing until you press Start in the app, and some Airalo packages that start at install. Activation windows differ: Nomad's Austria plans give you 30 days, eSIM4Travel 90 days, Ubigi six months for an unscanned QR code. Our guides for adding an eSIM on an iPhone and on a Samsung show the screens.
  4. On landing, turn data roaming on, select the eSIM as the line for mobile data and, where the provider asks for it, set the APN: "globaldata" for Maya Mobile and Global YO, "mobiledata" for Ubigi, "gigsky" for GigSky. Jetpac's data only worked in our test once the physical SIM was switched off.
  5. No signal? Pick the Austrian network by hand in the phone's network settings and toggle airplane mode; reviewers of ByteSIM, eSIM4Travel and Maya Mobile fixed their connection that way, and Ubigi's own advice for its Salzburg and border complaints was the same. Our eSIM troubleshooting guide lists the rest.
  6. Before the data runs out, remember that only GigSky, Ubigi and Roamless let you buy more without Wi-Fi; the other apps go offline at zero.

Calls and SMS in Austria

Austria's calling code is +43, and most travel eSIMs here are data-only, so calls go over WhatsApp, Signal or a similar app. Airalo is the exception among the providers compared here: its Servus Austria+ plans include minutes and texts, and its Discover+ global plan adds a US number. Jetpac sells calls as in-app voice packs (in our test the person we called saw a US number), Roamless offers in-app calls and an optional second number, Global YO makes outgoing VoIP calls from its app, and Saily sells an optional US number. ByteSIM sells local-number calling plans in some countries, but its Austria plans in our comparison tool are data-only; a 2023 reviewer did get free minutes on an older ByteSIM plan in Vienna.

Two reviewer findings matter: an Ubigi user in April 2026 could not send or receive ordinary text messages in Austria and used WhatsApp, Signal and Messenger instead, and a Maya Mobile user made VoIP calls in Vienna without trouble. If you need an Austrian number for restaurant bookings or a rental car, the local operator eSIMs above are the alternative: A1's B.free Travel eSIMs include 2,000 minutes and texts and a +43 number [3].

Free eSIM Data for Austria

Several providers compared here give a small free allowance that works in Austria, enough to test your phone before you pay. Nomad's Austria plans in our comparison tool include a 1 GB trial plan for 3 days, Roamless lists a free Austria eSIM with data for new users, GoMoWorld offers a free one-day trial, GigSky a free 100 MB trial and Jetpac a free 100 MB eSIM. Holafly's Always On keeps 1 GB a month free after a plan ends if you keep the eSIM installed. Our overview of free eSIM data plans and trials explains how to claim each one.

Frequently Asked Questions About eSIMs in Austria

Which eSIM works best in Austria?
Maya Mobile had the best record in traveler reports from Austria: 30 of 30 said it worked, with the only hiccups a phone setting and a slow start fixed by support. Ubigi came next with 16 of 17, the one miss slow data in Salzburg, and Holafly 11 of 12, but Holafly's speed was capped from the start in our test. Compare the current plans with (eSIM Comparison).
What is the cheapest eSIM for Austria?
eSIM4Travel is the cheapest provider for Austria in our comparison, at every size from 3 GB to 10 GB, with Global YO second and cheapest for very large plans. Both have too few reports from Austria to judge coverage, 2 and 1, all positive. The price-per-GB chart above updates live, and the plan tables show the current cheapest at each size (eSIM Comparison).
How much data do I need for Austria?
Most travelers manage a week in Austria on 3 to 5 GB of maps, messaging and social media. One Ubigi reviewer used about 13 GB in two weeks across five countries, 2 GB of it on maps, and a Nomad user uploading videos every day used about 35 GB of a 50 GB plan in 12 days. Is an Austria SIM card for tourists better than a travel eSIM?
A local SIM is cheaper per GB and includes an Austrian number, but every Austrian SIM must be registered with ID, so it cannot work before you land. A1 sells tourist eSIMs with calls and texts by email, and supermarket SIMs are cheaper still; the local SIM section above lists the current prices. A travel eSIM wins for short stays and zero paperwork.
Which eSIM works best in Vienna?
Nomad and Ubigi both worked for 4 of 4 travelers who reported from Vienna, and Maya Mobile and Holafly for 2 of 2 each, with Holafly's speed capped in our test. The only Vienna miss is GigSky, whose data was slow or dead for a reviewer in May 2025. All three networks cover Vienna well, so the choice there comes down to price and app (eSIM Comparison).
Does an Austria eSIM work in the Alps and ski resorts?
It depends on the network behind the eSIM. Third-party guides rank A1 first for Alpine coverage and Drei weakest, and the one weak-signal report in our files is from the Rhine Valley on the Swiss border, while an Ubigi user kept a connection in remote spots near the Alps. Providers on A1 and Drei, like Nomad, Ubigi and Jetpac, or on all three networks, like eSIM4Travel, are the safer choice for ski weeks.

Summary: the best eSIM for Austria

Based on 109 traveler reports and our tests, Maya Mobile is the best option for most trips to Austria: it worked well for 30 of 30 travelers, on a global unlimited plan with 5 GB a day at full speed, and its only weakness is that it sells nothing shorter than three days. Nomad (18 of 21) is the pick for Vienna and for fixed-data plans, with the misses being unstable data rather than dead zones and a help desk we could not reach. Jetpac (5 of 5) suits road trips across borders with calls and hotspot, at a higher price. Ubigi (16 of 17) had the strongest Alpine reports and cheap unlimited, but its support never answered us and one Salzburg reviewer had very slow data.

Holafly (11 of 12) is the simplest unlimited option on Drei, with its speed capped from the start in our test and no top-ups. eSIM4Travel is the cheapest in our comparison for Austria, with the best help desk we tested and all three networks on its plan, but only 2 reports from Austria so far, both positive, and no app. For a stay of two weeks or more, A1's own tourist eSIM beats them all on price once you register. Whatever the provider, the best eSIM for Austria in 2026 is one installed at home and switched on at the airport, with the network picked by hand if the signal fades in the mountains.
