Holafly is the pick for travelers who want data that just works, from Hanoi to the Mekong, and who do not need full speed. It worked well for 36 of 37 travelers who reported from Vietnam (97%), the best record of any provider here with strong evidence. The successes describe long trips: five weeks in Vietnam, a north-to-south route, 12 days across Vietnam and Cambodia, and multi-country Asia plans that switched from China, Thailand or Singapore without a reinstall. In our hands-on test, though, Holafly was the only provider whose speed was capped from the first megabyte, before any data was used. In practice that is enough for maps, Grab, messaging, browsing and streaming, and slow for large downloads, uploads, cloud backups and laptop work over the hotspot.

The one miss was District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City, where a reviewer on 8 May 2026 found the signal weak and the service unusable in several streets. Two travelers who still counted it as working added caveats: a few remote areas in Vietnam had no coverage where other networks did (21 Jul 2026), and the eSIM drained the battery faster than a normal SIM. A reviewer on Holafly's monthly global plan reported bad connectivity in every country, Vietnam included (4 May 2026); the trip-length Vietnam plans did not draw that complaint. Holafly's own page warns that coverage may be weaker or unstable in mountains and jungle [6], which fits the reports. One reviewer summed up the rest: "Worked well in the mountains of South Vietnam" (12 Jul 2026).

Holafly sells only unlimited Vietnam plans, from 3 to 30 days in our comparison tool, on VinaPhone (VNPT) [6]. The hotspot is capped at 1 GB a day, there are no top-ups (you buy a new eSIM), and a 1 GB "Always On" allowance stays available each month while the eSIM remains installed [6]. Holafly does not publish a fair-use threshold for Vietnam. Installation was one tap without a QR code in our test, and the help desk got one reviewer back online in about five minutes (9 May 2026). It is the most expensive unlimited plan in our comparison for Vietnam, and our Holafly review gives it the lowest speed result of the 14 providers. Airalo is the pick for travelers who want full-speed data and a plan that carries on to Thailand, Cambodia or Japan, and who do not mind paying more. It worked well for 19 of 21 travelers who reported from Vietnam (90%), strong evidence. The successes are mostly multi-country Asia trips and one three-week loop around Vietnam, where the eSIM "activated straight away and I had a reliable connection from the moment I landed" (2 Aug 2026). In our test Airalo ran with no speed cap, which is the main reason to pay more for it over Holafly.

Both misses were in Hanoi and both involve the network. One reviewer counted hundreds of disconnects, said the eSIM kept attaching to VinaPhone and refused to connect to Viettel (7 Aug 2026); another found automatic network selection did not work and switched networks by hand as he moved between areas (23 Aug 2026). Two more complaints did not count as failures but are worth knowing: a hard daily cap on the unlimited plan made the connection slow (12 Jul 2026), and the setup instructions confused a reviewer so much that he deleted a valid eSIM (22 Aug 2026). Airalo's Vietnam plans ("Xin Chao") run from 1 GB to 50 GB on 3 to 30 days, plus unlimited plans from 3 to 30 days at 3 GB a day before the speed drops [7]. The Asialink regional plans and the Discover global plans also cover Vietnam, and Discover+ adds a US number, not a Vietnamese one; a reviewer confirmed local calls do not work (8 Aug 2026). Airalo's Vietnam page names VNPT as the network, while older plan pages still read "Viettel VNPT" [7]; three independent testers report that Airalo moved off Viettel to VinaPhone during 2025 and 2026 with a speed drop, which Airalo has not announced. Airalo is among the two most expensive providers in Vietnam in our comparison, and its country record elsewhere is the weakest of the 14; see our Airalo review for the purchase and app tests, which were among the easiest.

Nomad is the pick for experienced eSIM users who want a fair price, a tidy app and an uncapped hotspot, and who can fix a dropout themselves. It worked well for 25 of 28 travelers who reported from Vietnam (89%), strong evidence. The successes include a three-week Thailand and Vietnam trip with no dropouts, an uncapped hotspot that worked across the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam (23 Aug 2026), a "very stable connection in Hanoi" (9 Jun 2026) and regional Asia plans that held up in remote areas. One traveler who ran out of data bought an add-on on the same eSIM instead of a new one (11 Jul 2026).

The misses were dead zones, not slow data: no service in Da Nang (21 Jul 2026), no connection on Phu Quoc and then none in Ho Chi Minh City either (6 May 2026), and one reviewer whose eSIM did not work most of the trip and bought a local SIM (2 May 2026). Two travelers who still rated it well had frequent dropouts in central and northern Vietnam that a phone restart fixed (7 Jul 2026), and a switch that froze at the airport until a restart (4 Jul 2026). In our hands-on test Nomad's bot looped on an APN question with no route to a human, so if you expect to need the help desk, Saily or eSIM4Travel are safer.

Nomad's Vietnam plans are 1 GB for 7 days, 3, 5 and 10 GB for 30 days, 50 GB for 30 days and unlimited for 5 or 10 days with 2 GB a day at full speed [8]; after that the speed falls to the harshest published rate in this set [8]. Our comparison tool lists the fixed plans on MobiFone and the unlimited plans on Vietnamobile, which has no 5G of its own [5]; Nomad's page names Vietnamobile, MobiFone and VinaPhone [8]. ByteSIM is the pick for price-driven travelers who want the option of Viettel, the network with the widest reach, and who are happy to message a help desk on arrival. It worked well for 43 of 49 travelers who reported from Vietnam (88%), strong evidence and the second-largest sample here. The successes describe 5G almost everywhere, fast data in Saigon, coverage on remote islands and "superb even in quite remote parts of Vietnam" (7 Mar 2024). A striking share of the successes started with a problem: the eSIM did not activate on landing, the traveler wrote to WhatsApp, and it was fixed within minutes. One reviewer who bought at Tan Son Nhat airport found activation on the local network took about an hour (25 Feb 2025).

The six misses split into two groups. Three are the local-number plans: reviewers could not receive verification codes to register with Grab and other apps (19 Mar 2026, 10 Feb 2026), and one voice plan never delivered a number (3 Aug 2025); ByteSIM's page says these plans give incoming calls and SMS only and does not guarantee OTP delivery [9]. The rest are setup failures: a phone that stayed offline until the traveler bought elsewhere (15 Mar 2026), an eSIM that would not auto-install with a help-desk agent who refused to escalate (9 Jan 2026), and a 5 GB-a-day plan that stopped after a week (19 Nov 2024). Very slow data in Hanoi on one report (23 Dec 2024) was blamed on device settings. The pattern is clear: ByteSIM works well once it connects, but the first connection often needs help.

The catalogue is the largest for Vietnam in our comparison tool: daily plans from 500 MB to 7 GB a day, total plans from 1 GB to 50 GB, 1 to 30 days, and unlimited plans from 3 to 30 days. Standard plans run on VinaPhone; plans labelled Viettel or Vietnamobile use that network, and a separate MobiFone product carries a local number [9]. The local-number plans with 5 or 7 GB a day are listed as Viettel in our comparison tool. Daily and total plans drop to a crawl after the quota [9], there are no top-ups, and hotspot is unlimited. ByteSIM is cheaper than most providers in Vietnam in our comparison. In our own test the WhatsApp line did not reply within 15 minutes and the checkout asked for a full postal address, which is why our ByteSIM review gives it a low Vefru test score despite the strong Vietnam record.

Maya Mobile is the pick for travelers on a multi-country Asia trip who want one unlimited plan for Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and beyond, and whose Vietnam leg stays in the cities and the south. It worked well for 49 of 61 travelers who reported from Vietnam (80%), the largest sample here, but the lowest share among providers with strong evidence. The successes describe Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, cruise stops, and plans that switched between Hong Kong, Dubai, China and Vietnam without a reinstall; one traveler even had signal in villages in the north (24 May 2025). Maya's help desk earns repeated praise for fast replies and quick refunds.

The 12 misses cluster in the north and on the network Maya lands on. A reviewer found that "everywhere north of Hoi An resulted in disconnected service" (12 Jan 2026); another had only 3G in the big cities and no coverage at all in the north, and named MobiFone as the partner (25 Nov 2025); a third lost the connection the moment he arrived in Hanoi (27 Nov 2025). Several eSIMs stopped after two days (14 Mar 2026, 17 Nov 2025, 18 Dec 2025), one traveler was stranded without a Grab ride (30 Oct 2025), and two reviewers in Da Nang and Hoi An got LTE where 5G was promised (24 Mar 2026). Maya does not name a Vietnam network on its page (checked September 2026), and the research file lists Vietnam among its weak countries.

Maya sells no Vietnam plan any more: in 2026 it replaced its per-country plans with one flat global unlimited plan for 3, 7, 14 or 30 days [16], with a Global + Cruise variant. Our comparison tool lists it at 5 GB a day at full speed before a slowdown, hotspot allowed; Maya's own pages do not state a Vietnam fair-use limit. It is by far the cheapest global unlimited plan in our comparison, and in our hands-on test it had the fairest unlimited rules and fast 5G, which is why it has the second-highest Vefru test score; see our Maya Mobile review. The drawback is the one above: for Sapa, Ha Giang or anywhere north of Hoi An, the reports say another provider is safer. eSIM4Travel is the pick for budget travelers and for anyone heading to Ha Giang, Sapa or the Central Highlands who wants a travel eSIM with Viettel access. It is the cheapest provider in Vietnam in our comparison, and the only one in the Best group whose plan names all three networks: Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone [10]. There is only 1 report from Vietnam so far, too few to judge; it is counted as worked because the eSIM connected, but the reviewer used 10 GB in three days and got no warning before the data ran out (27 Nov 2025). We cannot say how it performs in the mountains until more travelers report.

What we can say comes from our hands-on test, run outside Vietnam: we bought on the website, got the QR code by email, installed it and had data right away, and the help desk went from a short bot to a human in one click, who solved the problem and suggested switching network. It has the highest Vefru test score of the 14 providers, mostly for price and its help desk; our eSIM4Travel review has the screenshots. There is no app, no Google Pay, and once the data runs out you cannot reach the store without Wi-Fi, which is exactly what the one Vietnam reviewer ran into.

The Vietnam plans run from 500 MB and 1 GB day passes through 1 GB for 7 days and 3 to 50 GB for 30 days, plus unlimited plans from 3 to 30 days at 3 GB a day before the speed drops [10]. Regional South East Asia 12, South Asia 5 and Global 72 plans also cover Vietnam. Hotspot and top-ups are available, the eSIM must be activated within 90 days, and the validity starts on first connection [10]. Price is the reason it is here, and the three-network setup is the reason it is worth a try on a route the other picks struggle with.

Saily is the choice for a first eSIM if price matters less than an easy install and a help desk that answers. It worked well for 11 of 12 travelers who reported from Vietnam (92%), limited evidence. The successes describe an install that worked on two devices (13 Jul 2026), a help desk that connected a beginner to a real person before the trip (17 Apr 2026), and an agent who walked a traveler through settings while she was in Vietnam (8 Mar 2026). The one miss was an eSIM that did not work at all in Vietnam, with a refund refused (10 Apr 2026). Many of Saily's Vietnam reviews were written before departure, so the sample is thinner than the count suggests.

Saily sells Vietnam plans of 1 GB for 7 days and 3, 5, 10 and 20 GB for 30 days, plus Asia and Oceania and Global plans; its Vietnam page also lists an unlimited option at 5 GB a day with no hotspot restriction and a 180-day activation window [11]. It worked well for 17 of 19 travelers who reported from Vietnam (90%), limited evidence. One traveler with the 10 GB plan called it "fast and worked everywhere" across Hanoi, Sa Pa and the Ha Giang Loop (5 May 2026); others report a stable connection everywhere they went, good 4G for ten days, a hotspot that fed a second phone, and a Hanoi, Sapa and Ho Chi Minh City route. The two misses were an eSIM that could not connect at all (16 May 2026) and one with no internet in Vietnam or Israel (3 May 2026); a third traveler's own eSIM worked but a second install on her son's phone failed after payment (3 Jul 2026).

Ubigi's Vietnam plans are 3 GB for 15 days, 10 GB for 7 or 30 days, 50 GB for 30 days and unlimited for 7, 15 or 30 days, plus Asia, Best Asia and World plans. According to Ubigi's plan page the network is VNPT with 5G and no 3G fallback, and the unlimited plan slows after 30 GB. Ubigi sits around the market average on price in Vietnam, with the cheapest 30-day unlimited median in our comparison. The finding that keeps it out of the Best group is the help desk: our ticket went unanswered for 24 hours, the worst outcome we tested, and the app is a wrapped website, as our Ubigi review shows. Roamless is the choice for light users who hop between many countries and want credit that never expires. It worked well for 9 of 10 travelers who reported from Vietnam (90%), limited evidence. The successes are all multi-country trips (Singapore, Vietnam, Guatemala; Greece, Vietnam, Malaysia; Australia, Vietnam, Japan, Dubai), one of them in Ninh Binh, and one traveler who used under 300 MB a day for maps and translation on the pay-as-you-go plan (12 Feb 2026). The miss was an eSIM that did not work in Vietnam and a refund that took months (3 Apr 2025); a four-star reviewer said the internet did not work everywhere in Vietnam and in-app calls kept dropping (12 Mar 2026).

Roamless sells Vietnam-only 30-day plans from 1 GB to 200 GB, no-expiry credit, Asia and Oceania and Global 30-day plans, and a free 700 MB starter plan for new users in our comparison tool. Its Vietnam page names MobiFone with 3G, 4G and 5G, states no speed limit at all and allows unlimited hotspot [12]. It is around the market average on price in Vietnam, cheap for 1 GB and dear above 10 GB. In our test the preselected APN did not work until we picked another by hand, and speed tests failed until we switched network manually, which our Roamless review walks through. Jetpac is the choice for frequent flyers who value its extras (free lounge access on a delayed flight, WhatsApp and Maps that keep working after the data runs out) more than a smooth setup. It worked well for 12 of 14 travelers who reported from Vietnam (86%), limited evidence. The successes include a 30-day Asia-Pacific pack across five countries that connected the moment the plane landed (7 Jul 2025) and a 20 GB plan that latched onto networks across a Vietnam trip. Many successes needed the help desk first: travelers who could not connect on day two, at setup, or at all got fixed over WhatsApp or email, one after more than an hour (16 Jan 2026).

The misses are the ones that matter for your route: no coverage in Ninh Binh or on Cat Ba (27 Dec 2025), a South Asia pack that did not work in Vietnam or Thailand (12 Jun 2025), and an eSIM that worked on a first Vietnam trip but not on the second, with a replacement QR that also failed (3 Aug 2025). Jetpac's Vietnam plans run from 1 GB to 40 GB on 1 to 30 days and unlimited from 3 to 30 days at 3 GB per 24 hours with unlimited tethering [14]; every Vietnam plan is flagged 4G only in our comparison tool. Jetpac's page does not name a network; a single field test reports MobiFone. It is among the dearer providers in Vietnam in our comparison, and our Jetpac review found a rough app and a slow site. Yesim is the choice for experienced users who want unlimited data for an exact number of days. It worked well for 11 of 13 travelers who reported from Vietnam (85%), limited evidence; the reports include Hanoi, Nha Trang and Ha Long Bay, and one miss in Da Nang. We have the counts but not the full review texts for Yesim's Vietnam reports, so we cannot say what the two misses were. Yesim does not name a network on its page (checked September 2026) and says it switches to the fastest available one.

In our comparison tool Yesim's Vietnam plans are unlimited for any length from 1 to 30 days, fixed plans of 1 to 30 GB for 30 days and a 300 MB day plan, plus South East Asia, Asia, Global and Day Pass bundles. The fair-use limit on the unlimited plans is not published. Yesim sits around the market average on price in Vietnam. GoMoWorld is the choice for heavy data users on a budget who will remember to press Start. It worked well for 8 of 10 travelers who reported from Vietnam (80%), limited evidence. The successes describe a July 2026 trip with no connectivity issues and a start time scheduled in advance (3 Aug 2026), two separate Vietnam trips with good reception, and a refund of two plans within hours after a connection problem (22 Jul 2026). The misses were an eSIM so unreliable that the traveler switched to a physical SIM mid-trip (13 May 2025) and a buyer who paid before departure and could not work out how the eSIM was meant to work (21 Jul 2024).

GoMoWorld's Vietnam plans are 4 GB for 7 days and 15, 50 or 75 GB for 30 days, flagged 5G, plus South East Asia plans of 1 to 15 GB on 4G; plans do not expire until you start them, and new users get a free 1 GB one-day trial [15]. It is the second-cheapest provider in Vietnam in our comparison and was the fastest and least throttled in our test. It does not name a network on its page (checked September 2026); one field tester reports traffic routed via Ireland and a hotspot that did not work. The eSIM only exists in the app, one account covers one device, nothing happens until you press Start, and humans answer only in office hours, which our GoMoWorld review explains. GigSky is the choice for cruise passengers and for a one-day pass on a short stop. It worked well for 8 of 10 travelers who reported from Vietnam (80%), limited evidence, and the reports disagree more than for any other provider. Two say it "worked perfectly throughout Vietnam" (12 Aug 2026) or flawlessly in Vietnam and India; the misses say the signal was so bad it never reached 3G and the traveler bought another eSIM (11 Dec 2025), and that in Vietnam the service dropped and throttled constantly (25 Feb 2025). A four-star reviewer in Ho Chi Minh City watched it fall to 2G and then nothing, which he put down to the carrier (11 Dec 2025), and another found speed and responsiveness poor (14 Aug 2026).

GigSky's Vietnam plans are 1 GB for 7 days, 3 GB for 15 days, 5 and 10 GB for 30 days and a one-day unlimited pass, plus Asia Pacific and Cruise plans. We could not confirm which network it uses in Vietnam; GigSky describes itself as connecting to any available network. It is around the market average on price in Vietnam, although it is the most expensive provider overall in our comparison. Global YO is cheap, but it has the weakest Vietnam record of the 14 providers, so it is a choice only for travelers who can live with a gamble. It worked well for 10 of 15 travelers who reported from Vietnam (67%), limited evidence. The successes are Southeast Asia backpacking trips through Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia on one eSIM, including a digital nomad who ran work calls on it. The misses are serious: a connection in Ho Chi Minh City that was patchy at best and dropped out on the ferry from the Can Gio mangroves, so the couple could not hail a Grab home (25 Apr 2024); internet that stopped after three days with the phone showing 3G (1 Jun 2024); a QR code that errored until it expired (11 May 2024); plans for three countries that never connected (21 Jul 2024); and an eSIM that would not install while the traveler was in Vietnam and Thailand (1 Aug 2025). In every miss the help desk replied slowly or not at all.

Global YO's Vietnam plans run from 1 GB for 3 days to 100 GB for 60 days, with day plans at 1 GB a day, plus Asia Explorer, SEA-Oceania and Global Explorer plans. Its page names Hanoi Telecom (Vietnamobile) and MobiFone and lists 4G only, with no 5G for Vietnam [13]; Vietnamobile has no 5G of its own [5]. It is the third-cheapest provider in Vietnam in our comparison and installs well in our test, but the purchase is app-only and the help desk took 10 minutes for a template reply, as our Global YO review shows. Price per GB in Vietnam by eSIM Provider

How much does each provider charge per GB in Vietnam? The chart below compares plans of 1 to 10 GB that last 6 to 14 days, the usual range for a one- or two-week trip. Provider websites show only their own plans, so this side-by-side view is one you would otherwise have to calculate yourself. A shorter bar means a lower price per GB.

Vietnam is one of the cheapest countries in the world for mobile data, so the gap between the cheapest and dearest travel eSIM here is wide: eSIM4Travel, GoMoWorld and Global YO are well below the market average in our comparison, Airalo and Saily well above it. Most travelers in the reports used maps, Grab, translation and messaging, which fits the 5 GB and 10 GB tiers for a one- or two-week trip; our travel data calculator gives a figure for your own habits. Unlimited plans come from Holafly, Airalo, ByteSIM, Jetpac, Yesim, Ubigi, eSIM4Travel and Nomad, each with a different daily or per-plan allowance, listed in the quick table above.

Best eSIM for Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and the North

The city and area reports are thin next to the country totals: Hanoi has 15, Ho Chi Minh City 8 and Da Nang 4, and no provider has 3 or more reports that worked in any one place. So the country pick, Holafly, applies in all three cities, with its capped speed, and the rows below mostly tell you where the runners-up failed. The northern mountains have only a handful of reports, all from Ubigi and Maya Mobile, so for Sapa and Ha Giang the network information in the next sections carries more weight than the counts.

Best eSIM for Hanoi

The country pick, Holafly, applies in Hanoi: its one Hanoi report worked, and the capital is on the coastal and city corridor where every network is strong, so the deciding factor is speed, and Holafly's is capped in our test. Maya Mobile is the only provider with 3 or more Hanoi reports, and it worked for only 3 of 5; the two misses were a connection that vanished on arrival in Hanoi (27 Nov 2025) and data so slow in the city that a speed-test page took an hour to load (12 Apr 2025). Airalo's Hanoi miss was hundreds of disconnects on VinaPhone with no way to switch to Viettel (7 Aug 2026), and ByteSIM's was a crawl on a new iPhone that the help desk blamed on settings (23 Dec 2024).

The clean Hanoi reports came from Ubigi (2 of 2, both on routes that carried on to Sapa), Nomad ("very stable connection in Hanoi", 9 Jun 2026), Yesim and Holafly, whose reviewer had Wi-Fi-style data all over the city after a stop in China (5 Aug 2026). Noi Bai airport has SIM counters after customs, and one ByteSIM traveler installed his eSIM on the airport Wi-Fi before leaving the terminal (29 Mar 2025).

Best eSIM for Ho Chi Minh City

The country pick, Holafly, applies in Ho Chi Minh City, but with the clearest warning on this page: its one miss in Vietnam was District 1, the central tourist district, where a reviewer found the signal weak and the service unusable in many streets (8 May 2026), while another Holafly user called the service pretty reliable in the city (26 May 2026). No provider has 3 or more reports here. Nomad's miss was no connection in the city after none on Phu Quoc (6 May 2026), and Global YO's was a connection that was patchy at best, worst on the ferry back from the Can Gio mangroves (25 Apr 2024).

ByteSIM, Ubigi, Maya Mobile and GigSky each have one working report in the city, and ByteSIM's traveler described fast internet in Saigon (2 Jul 2024). A GigSky user saw the connection drop to 2G and then nothing in the city, though he rated the eSIM well overall (11 Dec 2025). ByteSIM's airport report says a plan bought on arrival at Tan Son Nhat took about an hour to activate on the local network (25 Feb 2025), so install before you land where you can.

Best eSIM for Da Nang

The country pick, Holafly, applies in Da Nang, with its capped speed: Maya Mobile worked for both travelers who reported from here, but 2 reports are too few for a city pick, and one of them got only LTE in Da Nang and Hoi An where 5G was promised (24 Mar 2026). The other two Da Nang reports are misses: Nomad's traveler could not use the service at all (21 Jul 2026) and Yesim's reviewer also reported a failure. Da Nang had the highest city 5G median in the country on the regulator's measurements in early 2026 [2], so slow data here points at the provider's network choice, not the city.

North of here the reports thin out and the network decides. Ubigi worked on the Ha Giang Loop and in Sapa for the three travelers who reported from there; Maya Mobile's reviewers reported nothing north of Hoi An on more than one trip; Jetpac had no coverage on Cat Ba or in Ninh Binh for one traveler while Roamless worked in Ninh Binh for another. No traveler has yet reported from the mountains on eSIM4Travel, the one Best-group provider with Viettel access, or on ByteSIM's Viettel-labelled plans; Viettel's own map is the only official coverage map you can check an address on [3].

Local SIM Cards and Operator eSIMs in Vietnam

A local SIM beats a travel eSIM on price for any trip over a week, and it is the only reliable way to get Viettel outside the cities; a travel eSIM wins when you land late, want no passport scan, or need data the moment the plane stops. As of September 2026, Viettel's tourist data packages cost 60,000 to 200,000 VND for 7 to 30 days, with the physical SIM sold separately for 10,000 to 60,000 VND depending on where you buy; the data-only tiers carry no local number. VinaPhone's airport Tourist SIM is reported at 199,000 VND for 15 days with 1 GB a day, 50 minutes of local and international calls, 50 SMS and a +84 number; three independent guides agree on that offer, but we did not find it on a VNPT page. MobiFone tourist plans in stores run from 90,000 to 250,000 VND for 1 to 30 days.

The cheapest option of all is MobiFone's "Hi Vietnam" app: it issues a free MobiFone eSIM with 8 GB of 5G data and 10 minutes of domestic calls for 24 hours, and its HVN100 package gives 30 GB for 3 days for 100,000 VND [4]. The catch is identity: MobiFone's pages require passport eKYC (an identity check with your passport), and a third-party guide reports that it runs as a video call. Passport registration is mandatory for every physical SIM and every carrier eSIM in Vietnam; staff do it at the counter in a minute or two, and anonymous SIMs are blocked. Travel eSIMs bought online need no ID.

Counters sit after customs at Noi Bai (Hanoi), Tan Son Nhat (Ho Chi Minh City), Da Nang, Cam Ranh (Nha Trang) and Phu Quoc, typically 06:00 to 02:00, and accept VND, USD and, at Viettel and MobiFone, international Visa and Mastercard. Expect to pay more at the airport than in the city: the guides we read put the premium anywhere from 15% to two or three times the city price, and unofficial resale booths quote far more. Buy at a carrier-branded counter or store, skip unmarked street stalls and pre-activated SIMs, which reportedly stop working mid-trip, and note that tourist SIMs generally cannot be topped up; a standard prepaid SIM plus a data package can. Mobile Networks in Vietnam

Viettel is the network to want outside the cities, and the one most travel eSIMs do not give you. The regulator's own i-Speed platform has placed Viettel first on median 5G download in every month it published in 2026, with an all-technology median roughly double MobiFone's [2]; Viettel also runs about three quarters of the country's 5G base stations according to Ministry of Science and Technology figures, and it has the only official, address-searchable coverage map, Viettel Open Network [3]. Opensignal's September 2025 report gave Viettel its coverage award, according to the summary we could read, while MobiFone won the speed awards and MobiFone and Vietnamobile shared the availability award. Press reports say Ookla named VinaPhone best 5G network in Vietnam at MWC in March 2026 on late-2025 data, and an earlier Ookla report is said to have named Viettel; we could not reconcile the two.

The reading that fits all of it: Viettel wins on reach, VinaPhone and MobiFone compete well in the cities and along the coast where their smaller networks are concentrated. VinaPhone thins out faster than Viettel in Ha Giang, Sapa, the Central Highlands and the remote Mekong; MobiFone has the smallest 5G footprint and is the network Maya Mobile's unhappy reviewers named; Vietnamobile is the only private operator and has no 5G [5]. Among the 14 providers, only eSIM4Travel names Viettel on its plan [10] and ByteSIM offers it on labelled plans [9]. Holafly, Ubigi and Airalo are on VinaPhone or VNPT [6] [7]; Roamless is on MobiFone [12]; Nomad and Global YO use Vietnamobile and MobiFone [8] [13]; Saily, Yesim, GoMoWorld, Maya Mobile and GigSky do not say.

2G was switched off nationwide on 15 September 2026 and 3G is planned to close in September 2028 [1], so a 4G phone with VoLTE is the safe minimum, and Ubigi's page already lists Vietnam with no 3G fallback. 5G is available in the big cities from every provider except Global YO and Jetpac, whose Vietnam plans are 4G only; our 4G versus 5G explainer says when that matters. Vietnam's provinces were merged from 63 to 34 in 2025 [2], so any coverage list organised by province and dated before mid-2025 describes a map that no longer exists.

How to Set Up an eSIM for Vietnam

Install at home on Wi-Fi and let the plan start when you land; almost every provider here starts the clock on first connection, and the reports show that travelers who installed on arrival were the ones who needed the help desk.

1. Check your phone. It must be carrier-unlocked and have eSIM hardware; two providers' compatibility pages note that iPhones bought in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao have no eSIM except a few models. Our first eSIM guide walks through the check.
2. Buy and install before you fly. Saily, GoMoWorld, Roamless and GigSky deliver the eSIM only in their app; the others email a QR code. Watch the activation windows: eSIM4Travel 90 days [10], Nomad 60 days [8], Saily 180 days [11]. Two exceptions to "install at home": Yesim's plan started at purchase in our test, and GoMoWorld does nothing until you press Start or schedule a start in the app.
3. Set the APN if your provider needs one: "globaldata" for Maya Mobile and Global YO, "gigsky" for GigSky, "mobiledata" for Ubigi; Roamless worked for us only after picking another APN by hand. Follow our guides for adding an eSIM on iPhone or adding an eSIM on Samsung.
4. On landing, turn on data roaming for the eSIM, select it for mobile data and turn off data on your home SIM. Airalo users in Hanoi had to pick the network by hand when automatic selection failed, and Nomad users fixed dropouts with a restart.
5. If nothing connects, restart the phone, try manual network selection, then message the help desk: ByteSIM's WhatsApp line fixed most of its Vietnam reports within minutes. Our eSIM troubleshooting guide lists the settings to check first.

Calls and SMS in Vietnam

Vietnam's calling code is +84, and no travel eSIM here gives you a Vietnamese number that reliably receives app verification codes. ByteSIM's local-number plans on Viettel include incoming calls and SMS only, and ByteSIM says itself that OTP delivery is not guaranteed [9]; two reviewers could not register with Grab on them. Airalo's Discover+ global plan adds a US number, not local calls, Saily sells a US number add-on [11], Jetpac sells in-app voice packs, Global YO offers outgoing internet calls, and Roamless has in-app calling and an optional real number for calls and SMS [12], which one Vietnam traveler found intermittent. Holafly, Maya Mobile, Ubigi, Yesim, GoMoWorld, GigSky, Nomad and eSIM4Travel are data-only here.

If you need a local number, a local SIM is the route: VinaPhone's Tourist SIM is reported to include local and international minutes and a +84 number, and MobiFone's Hi Vietnam eSIM includes 10 minutes of domestic calls [4]. Your phone needs VoLTE for voice now that 2G is off [1]. For everything else, WhatsApp, FaceTime and Grab calls over data worked for the travelers above; one third-party guide reports that Telegram has been blocked in Vietnam since June 2025, which we could not confirm with an official document, and VPN use is legal.

Free eSIM Data for Vietnam

Several providers give a small free allowance that works in Vietnam, enough to test your phone or get a Grab from the airport. GoMoWorld gives new users a free 1 GB one-day trial for Vietnam [15]; Roamless lists a free 700 MB starter plan for new users in our comparison tool; Nomad's 1 GB three-day Vietnam plan is flagged as a trial there; GigSky and Jetpac offer 100 MB trials on their global eSIMs. The biggest free allowance is MobiFone's own Hi Vietnam eSIM, 8 GB for 24 hours, but it needs a passport check [4]. Summary: the best eSIM for Vietnam

Based on 300 traveler reports from Vietnam and our own tests, Holafly is the best option for most trips in 2026: it worked well for 36 of 37 travelers, from Ha Long Bay to the southern mountains, with unlimited data, and its one weakness is the speed cap we found in our test. Airalo (19 of 21) suits travelers who want full speed and a plan that carries on to Thailand or Japan, at one of the highest prices here and with both misses in Hanoi. Nomad (25 of 28) has the best app at an average price, but its misses were dead zones in Da Nang and Phu Quoc and its help desk could not be reached in our test.

ByteSIM (43 of 49) is the cheap pick with Viettel on its labelled plans, as long as you are ready to message WhatsApp on arrival and skip its local-number plans. Maya Mobile (49 of 61) suits multi-country Asia trips on one unlimited plan, but its misses cluster north of Hoi An. eSIM4Travel is the cheapest provider in Vietnam and the only pick naming all three networks, with just 1 report so far and no app. Whichever provider it is, the best eSIM for Vietnam is the one installed before you land, with Viettel if your route leaves the coast.
