Best eSIM for Cambodia in 2026: 14 Providers Ranked by Traveler Reports

Key Takeaways

Key takeaways

Based on 47 traveler reports from Cambodia and our tests, the best option for most trips is Holafly: it worked well for all 6 travelers who reported from Cambodia, but in our test its speed was capped from the start. Global YO is the cheap choice if you install at home (4 of 5), with slow support. Ubigi (3 of 4) has the most generous unlimited plan, but its help desk never answered us. Airalo (3 of 5) has the easiest app, but both misses were around Phnom Penh. eSIM4Travel is usually the cheapest here, with a human help desk, but has no app and no Cambodia reports yet.

The best eSIM for Cambodia depends on where you go, because Cambodia's three big networks do not cover the country equally. People, roads and cell sites cluster on the flat central plain between Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and the Tonle Sap. The Cardamom Mountains in the south-west, the highlands of Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri in the east and the islands off Sihanoukville are where coverage thins out. Metfone is the only operator the regulator records with 5G sites in all 24 provinces; Cellcard has 5G in just four and none on the coast [3]. Only half of the 14 providers we compare name the network they use here, so for a trip that leaves the main triangle, the network matters more than the brand.

Two things are different from what most provider pages still say. All commercial flights into the capital now land at Techo International Airport, about 20 km south of Phnom Penh, which took over from the old Phnom Penh International (PNH) in September 2025; several eSIM pages still tell you to buy a SIM "at PNH". And every land crossing from Thailand has been shut since late June 2025 and was still shut as of late August 2026, so travelers combining the two countries fly, or come in from Vietnam at Bavet. Check the border status right before you travel; it has reopened and closed before. 5G switched on at all three operators on 1 Jan 2026 [3], but several travel eSIMs here are sold as 4G only.

If you plan to buy a local SIM instead, bring your passport: SIM registration against ID is mandatory, and the regulator penalised Metfone's operator in June 2026 for selling SIMs without taking ID properly [4]. Smart's own eSIM needs a document scan and a face scan [7]. The dry season from November to March is the busiest time to visit. Below, we rank 14 travel eSIM providers on 47 traveler reports from Cambodia, then on price, then on our own hands-on tests.

Best eSIM Providers for Cambodia

eSIM plans in Cambodia at a glance

How well each provider's eSIM works in Cambodia

The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in Cambodia. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

How we got these numbers: we read 47 public customer reviews that mention Cambodia or a place in it, published between April 2025 and August 2026, and counted a report as "worked" when the reviewer said the eSIM connected, even with small hiccups. We treat 20 or more reports as strong evidence, 3 to 19 as limited, and fewer than 3 as too few to judge. A count like 6 of 6 means the eSIM worked well for all 6 travelers who reported from here; each provider section says what went wrong for the rest. The Vefru test score is a separate number: our own hands-on test of the provider, run outside Cambodia, so it says how the provider behaves, not how the network performs here. Local operator prices in the text were read from operator pages on 11 Sep 2026; provider ratings, the plan tables and the price-per-GB chart are live and update on their own.

We chose the Best group on coverage first (how many travelers each eSIM worked for in Cambodia), price position second and our hands-on test third. Nomad and Maya Mobile have enough reports to qualify, but they had the weakest records of any provider with 3 or more reports here (4 of 8 and 4 of 10), so they sit in the Other group with the reasons spelled out. eSIM4Travel is in the Best group on price and on our test, not on Cambodia reports, of which it has none yet.

Holafly eSIM in our hands

Holafly testing outdoor Holafly testing support Holafly testing support 2 Holafly testing speed

Holafly is the pick for travelers who want data that just works in Cambodia and do not need it fast. It worked well for all 6 travelers who reported from Cambodia (100%), limited evidence but a clean sheet, and it rides Metfone, the only network with 5G sites in every province. The catch is speed: in our hands-on test Holafly was the only provider slowed from the first megabyte, before any data was used, and it got the lowest speed result of the 14. In practice that is enough for maps, messaging, browsing and streaming, and too slow for large downloads, uploads, cloud backups and laptop work.

None of the 6 Cambodia reports describes a failure, and none names a city or region, so we cannot say where in Cambodia it was used. Holafly's Cambodia page names Metfone (VTC) as its network and says any fair-use slowdown lasts at most one day and resets the next [13]. Metfone is also the operator that wins Opensignal's Reliability Experience in Cambodia, according to its February 2026 report, which fits the clean record.

Holafly sells unlimited data only, priced by the day from 1 to 90 days, and its Cambodia page lists hotspot sharing capped at 1 GB a day, no local number or SMS, and no top-ups: when a plan ends you buy a new eSIM [13]. Unused eSIMs can be refunded within 6 months; a deleted eSIM cannot be reinstalled. "Always On" gives 1 GB a month of backup data after the plan ends if you keep the eSIM. Among unlimited plans it is one of the most expensive in our comparison. Our comparison tool had no Holafly plan for Cambodia at export time, so there is no plan table below; Holafly's own page listed Cambodia plans from 1 to 90 days as of September 2026. The install is one tap with no QR code, as our hands-on Holafly review shows, and that review also documents the throttling. The Holafly Cambodia page has the current day prices.

Global YO eSIM in our hands

Global YO testing outdoor Global YO testing speed 1 Global YO testing speed 2 Global YO testing support

Global YO is the choice for travelers who want a low price and will set everything up at home. It worked well for 4 of 5 travelers who reported from Cambodia (80%), limited evidence. It is the second cheapest provider in our price analysis and gets cheaper as plans grow, so a 10 GB or 20 GB Cambodia plan is where its price edge is biggest.

The one miss is not described in the review texts we have, and none of the 5 reports names a place in Cambodia. Global YO does not name its Cambodian network on its page; it only lists Cambodia among its 4G LTE countries (checked September 2026). So this is a blind buy on network, which matters less in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap than on the coast or in the north-east. Our hands-on test found support slow: a generic first reply after 10 minutes and more than 30 minutes for the follow-up. That is why the subtitle says slow support, not no support.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: Cambodia plans from 1 GB for 3 days up to 100 GB for 60 days, "Day Plans" with a daily allowance that slow down afterwards, an Asia Explorer plan for 24 countries and a Global Explorer plan, all with tethering and top-ups. There is no unlimited plan. The Day Plan listing is inconsistent: its name says 3 GB a day while its terms say 1 GB a day, and Global YO's own page gives 1 GB a day, so expect the lower figure. Purchase is app-only, the eSIM is emailed, and a deleted eSIM cannot be reinstalled; the APN sometimes has to be set to "globaldata" by hand. Our Global YO review has the install details and the support timings. Calls are possible through its separate YO.IO app. Current prices are on the Global YO Cambodia page.

Ubigi is the travel eSIM brand of Paris operator Transatel, with one reusable eSIM for 200+ destinations. Data was fast in our test, and its 3 GB, 10 GB and 30-day unlimited plans are cheap. Its weak point is support: a chatbot that ends in an email ticket, with no live agent.

Ubigi eSIM in our hands

Ubigi testing preview Ubigi testing speed 1 Ubigi testing speed 2 Ubigi testing support

Ubigi suits travelers who need a lot of data for a long trip and can fix problems themselves. It worked well for 3 of 4 travelers who reported from Cambodia (75%), limited evidence. The successes came from multi-country trips through Thailand, Laos, Malaysia and Cambodia, with one reviewer in July 2026 praising in-app purchases along the way and another, in May 2026, using it on cruises and in Bali afterwards. Ubigi's Cambodia plan runs on Metfone with 3G, 4G and 5G, the network with the widest provincial 5G footprint [15].

The one miss was in Phnom Penh, in April 2026: a traveler on the 30-day unlimited plan wrote "Very bad connection. unusable even after reset eSim" (19 Apr 2026) and switched to a local Smart eSIM. A second report, counted as working, carries a warning for the provinces: a traveler on Ubigi's regional Best Asia Pass in Mondulkiri in August 2026 found the eSIM on Cellcard, not the Metfone the plan page named, and called Cellcard less reliable there. For Cambodia itself the plan page names Metfone [15]; for a regional pass the network may differ. Our hands-on test found the worst support outcome of the 14: a good illustrated bot checklist, then an email ticket with no reply in 24 hours. If something breaks here, you are on your own.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: Cambodia plans of 1, 3, 10 and 25 GB over 7 to 30 days, plus unlimited for 7 or 30 days; Asia, Best Asia, World and Best World plans also cover Cambodia. Ubigi's page puts the Cambodia unlimited plan at 60 GB of full-speed data on 30 days (20 GB on 7 days) before it slows [15], by far the most generous allowance here. There is no 5 GB or 20 GB size. Hotspot is allowed, you can choose a home or local IP address, the QR code comes by email and is valid for 6 months, and the app lets you buy more data even at zero balance, which only GigSky matched in our test. Price sits slightly below market overall and its unlimited plan is among the cheapest. Our Ubigi review covers the clunky site and app. Plans are on the Ubigi site.

Airalo eSIM in our hands

Airalo testing outdoor Airalo testing speed 1 Airalo testing speed 2 Airalo testing support

Airalo is the safe choice for a first eSIM if you stay on the tourist trail, with the caveat that its Cambodia record is mixed. It worked well for 3 of 5 travelers who reported from Cambodia (60%), limited evidence. The one placed success was in Siem Reap. Airalo is the only provider here that names Smart as its main network [12], the operator with 5G across 20 provinces including the whole coast.

Both misses were in the capital: one in Phnom Penh and one at the old Phnom Penh International Airport, which no longer handles commercial flights. The review texts behind those two reports are not in our set, so we cannot say whether they were dead zones or setup trouble. Across all countries Airalo has the weakest reliability record of the 14 providers in our data, so a 60% result here is not an outlier.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: Connect Cambodia plans from 1 GB to 50 GB over 3 to 30 days, unlimited plans with 3 GB a day at full speed and slower after that (Airalo's page says the same) [12], plus the Asialink regional and Discover global plans, which also cover Cambodia; Discover+ adds calls and texts on a US number. Airalo's page lists top-ups, no ID check for Cambodia, and plans that start on first connection, with renewals triggered at 10% remaining unless you switch that off [12]. Price is at the market average; Airalo is never the cheapest in our comparison. Purchase works in the browser without the app, and the install needed no settings in our test; see our Airalo review. Current plans are on the Airalo Cambodia page.

eSIM4Travel eSIM in our hands

eSIM4Travel testing outdoor eSIM4Travel testing speed 1 eSIM4Travel testing speed 2 eSIM4Travel testing support

eSIM4Travel is the pick for travelers who want the lowest price and a human on the help desk. There are no traveler reports from Cambodia yet, so its place here rests on our hands-on test and its price position, not on a Cambodia record. It is the cheapest provider in our price analysis on every measure, and in our comparison tool its Cambodia plans sit well below the other providers at 3, 5 and 10 GB. The research also found its 1 GB Cambodia plan the cheapest single-country 1 GB plan on any provider page in September 2026.

Its Cambodia plan is sold on CamGSM, Cellcard's legal name, with Smart and Metfone also listed in the page footer, and the plan is tagged 4G/LTE/3G rather than 5G (checked September 2026). Cellcard is the fastest network in Phnom Penh by Opensignal's February 2026 report, but it has 5G in only four provinces and none on the coast [3], so for islands or the north-east a Metfone-based plan is the safer bet. Our test, run in Switzerland, found a short bot that hands over to a person in one click, who solved the problem and suggested a network switch; the eSIM came by email as a QR code and worked right away.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: Cambodia (CamGSM) plans of 1 GB for 7 days and 3, 5 and 10 GB for 30 days, plus a Global 72 plan from 1 GB to 20 GB that covers Cambodia. Tethering is allowed, plans start on first connection and must be activated within 90 days. The downsides are the same as everywhere: no app, no Google Pay, and no way to buy more data without Wi-Fi once the plan runs out. Refunds are possible within 2 months if less than 10% is used. Our eSIM4Travel review shows the whole purchase and the help-desk chat. Plans are on the eSIM4Travel Cambodia page.

Nomad eSIM in our hands

Nomad testing preview Nomad testing speed 1 Nomad testing speed 2 Nomad testing support

Nomad is a coin toss in Cambodia on the evidence so far. It worked well for 4 of 8 travelers who reported from Cambodia (50%), limited evidence, and that is the weakest ratio of any provider with a clear record here. The placed reports split too: one success in Phnom Penh, one failure in Siem Reap. The review texts behind the misses are not in our set, so we cannot say what failed. Nomad's Cambodia page names Metfone as its network, stated twice [14], so the network is not the obvious explanation.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: Cambodia plans of 1 GB for 7 days and 3 to 20 GB over 30 to 45 days, a 3-day 1 GB trial plan, plus Regional APAC, Global and Global-EX plans that cover Cambodia; no unlimited plan for Cambodia. Plans allow tethering and add-on data, and Nomad's page gives a 60-day window to activate, after which the plan starts on its own [14]. Price sits slightly below market. The finding that places it here, besides the record: in our test Nomad's support bot looped and offered no route to a human, which our Nomad review documents. Nomad still suits experienced users who like its home-screen data widget and will not need help. Plans are on the Nomad site.

Maya Mobile eSIM in our hands

Maya Mobile testing preview Maya Mobile testing speed 1 Maya Mobile testing speed 2 Maya Mobile testing support

Maya Mobile is the provider with the most failures in Cambodia, which is unusual for it. It worked well for 4 of 10 travelers who reported from Cambodia (40%), limited evidence. Across all countries Maya is the second most reliable provider in our data, and our review digest lists Cambodia among its few weak spots, next to Taiwan, Vietnam, Morocco and Egypt. None of the 10 reports names a place, and the review texts are not in our set, so we cannot say what went wrong. Maya does not name its Cambodian network on its page; third parties report Metfone.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: no Cambodia plan at all, only its global unlimited plan for 3, 7, 14 or 30 days, in a plain and a cruise version, with 5 GB a day at full speed before it slows. Maya's own page claims no caps and no throttling, so the two sources conflict; our own test found a daily allowance before the slowdown, which is still the fairest unlimited rule we have tested. Maya's page confirms it no longer sells Cambodia-only plans [18]. It is by far the cheapest global unlimited plan in our comparison, but it sells nothing small. Our Maya Mobile review has the install steps (set the APN to "globaldata"). It still makes sense for a multi-country trip of a week or more. Plans are on the Maya Mobile site.

Across all countries it is the third most reliable provider in our data. Its Cambodia page names Metfone with 3G, LTE and 4G [16], though the same page promises 5G in its body text, a contradiction we could not resolve.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: a free 450 MB Cambodia trial for new users, Cambodia fixed plans from 1 GB to 100 GB valid 30 days, pay-as-you-go credit with no expiry, and Asia and Oceania and Global 30-day plans; no unlimited plan and no throttling flagged, with hotspot allowed. Price is second cheapest for 1 GB in our analysis and among the dearest at 10 GB and above, so it fits short, light trips. In our test the preselected APN did not work until we picked another network profile by hand, and purchase is app-only; our Roamless review has the fix. It also kept a trickle of data at zero balance, enough to top up without Wi-Fi. Plans are on the Roamless Cambodia page.

ByteSIM eSIM in our hands

ByteSIM testing preview ByteSIM testing speed 1 ByteSIM testing speed 2 ByteSIM testing support

ByteSIM has the widest choice of Cambodia plans but not enough reports to judge. It worked well for 2 of 2 travelers who reported from Cambodia, too few to judge. Its page says the plans are "Powered by Cellcard" [17], the fastest and most consistent network in Phnom Penh by Opensignal's February 2026 report, and the one with the thinnest 5G footprint outside the capital.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: 68 Cambodia plans, fixed data from 1 GB to 90 GB over 1 to 30 days, daily plans of 1, 2 or 3 GB a day, and unlimited plans from 3 to 30 days with a fair-use slowdown whose limit is not stated. Longer validity costs more, so it looks cheapest for short trips; overall it is at market price in our analysis, competitive at 3 to 5 GB and dear at 20 GB and above. There are no top-ups. In our test the checkout demanded a phone number and full postal address, the app install failed and WhatsApp support did not reply in 15 minutes, which is why our ByteSIM review rates it low despite a strong record in East Asia. It suits experienced users who want to pay with a local wallet. Plans are on the ByteSIM site.

Yesim has one Cambodia report, a success in Phnom Penh, which is too few to judge. It worked well for 1 of 1 travelers who reported from Cambodia. Its page does not name a network and promises automatic connection to the best one, switching to 5G where available; it lists Battambang, Kampong Cham, Kampong Chhnang, Kratie, Phnom Penh, Prey Veng, Pursat, Siem Reap, Sisophon and Takeo as usable cities (checked September 2026).

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: a 200 MB day plan, Cambodia plans from 1 GB to 20 GB, unlimited for 1, 7, 15 or 30 days with an unstated fair-use limit, and Asia and Global Plus bundles. Its unlimited plans are at market price and its fixed plans dear in our analysis. The finding that places it here: our plan started at purchase, not at first use, and support took 15 to 60 minutes per reply with template answers, among the slowest we tested, as our Yesim review shows. Buy close to your trip or use the "Activate later" option. Experienced users who want unlimited by the day may still like it. Plans are on the Yesim Cambodia page.

Jetpac has a single positive report from Cambodia, too few to judge. It worked well for 1 of 1 travelers who reported from Cambodia: a first-time user in November 2025 who "connected straight away for Cambodia" (22 Nov 2025) and then had a connection problem on day two in Vietnam, fixed over WhatsApp. Jetpac's Cambodia page does not name a network; third parties report Metfone. Cambodia was only added to its Southeast Asia regional plan for 2026, according to a third-party report.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: Cambodia plans from 1 GB to 40 GB, every one flagged 4G only, plus Southeast Asia, Asia Pacific and Global plans that cover Cambodia, including regional unlimited plans with 3 GB a day at full speed. Extras: free WhatsApp, Google Maps, Uber and Grab after the data runs out on packs of 3 GB and up, in-app voice packs, unlimited hotspot and lounge access if your flight is delayed by more than an hour. Price is among the dearer for 3 to 20 GB in our analysis, and 20 GB often costs more than 30 GB. The finding that places it here: a rough app whose usage counter lagged, and a slow site with a misleading button, as our Jetpac review shows. Frequent flyers who want calls and hotspot may still choose it. Plans are on the Jetpac site.

Saily is the easiest eSIM to set up in our tests, but one Cambodia report is too few to recommend it on coverage. It worked well for 1 of 1 travelers who reported from Cambodia. Its Cambodia page does not name a network, only "Cambodia's best networks", and we re-checked it on 25 Sep 2026 with the same result.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: Cambodia plans of 1 GB for 7 days and 3, 5 or 10 GB for 30 days, plus Global plans from 1 GB to 20 GB; no unlimited for Cambodia. Saily's page gives a 180-day activation window, after which the plan starts on its own, no hotspot restrictions, and calls and SMS through an optional US number, not a Cambodian one (checked September 2026). It is among the most expensive providers where people travel in our price analysis. In our test it had the smoothest install and a help desk that answers fast, which our Saily review documents; the eSIM is app-only. First-time eSIM users who value that over price may still pick it. Plans are on the Saily Cambodia page.

GigSky is for cruise passengers and travelers who want a 1-day pass, not for cheap Cambodia data. It worked well for 1 of 1 travelers who reported from Cambodia, too few to judge. Its page says the network varies because it connects to the fastest available one, so it names none (checked September 2026).

GigSky is the most expensive provider overall in our price analysis, with its steepest premiums in Asia and Africa. The finding that places it here, besides price: you must install the app to buy, and the app is a wrapped website, though it stays online after the data runs out so you can buy more without Wi-Fi, a rare plus our GigSky review confirms. GoMoWorld eSIM in our hands

GoMoWorld testing preview GoMoWorld testing speed 1 GoMoWorld testing speed 2 GoMoWorld testing support

GoMoWorld is a poor fit for Cambodia even though its one report is positive. It worked well for 1 of 1 travelers who reported from Cambodia: a traveler in July 2026 who wrote that "it works, and with ease" and "used it in Cambodia and now in Thailand" (16 Jul 2026). Its page does not name a network, only "major Cambodian networks" and two networks per country on average (checked September 2026).

The problem is what it sells here. GoMoWorld charges four fixed euro prices everywhere and sets the data per country, and in Cambodia our comparison tool lists only 400 MB for 7 days and 2, 4 or 6 GB for 30 days. That makes it one of the most expensive providers in Cambodia in our price analysis, while it is cheap in Switzerland or India. No unlimited, no calls, hotspot allowed, plans keep until you activate them. The finding that places it here, besides price: the eSIM is app-only, one account covers one device, and you must press Start in the app or nothing happens, the most common cause of "not working" we found; our GoMoWorld review explains it. Human support works office hours only. In our test it was the fastest of the 14 and showed no throttling even after heavy use. Plans are on the GoMoWorld site.

Providers travelers report from Cambodia that we have not tested

Simify also appears in traveler reviews from Cambodia, but it is not in our report count and we have not tested it. Its reviews show a pattern worth knowing for any provider: two travelers in March 2026 bought a plan that worked in Vietnam and did not connect in Cambodia, and Simify's reply explains that a regional plan only works where Cambodia is listed. Check the country list of any regional Southeast Asia plan before you rely on it.

Best eSIM Plans for Cambodia

Price per GB in Cambodia by eSIM Provider

How much does each provider charge per GB in Cambodia? The chart below compares plans of 1 to 10 GB that last 6 to 14 days, the usual range for a one- or two-week trip. Provider websites show only their own plans, so this side-by-side view is one you would otherwise have to calculate yourself. A shorter bar means a lower price per GB.

Generated 02.11.2026 07:55

Cambodia is a cheap-data country for locals and an expensive one for travel eSIMs: no provider in our comparison comes close to the local operators' price per GB, so the tables below are about which travel eSIM costs least, not about beating a local SIM. The cheapest eSIM for Cambodia is usually eSIM4Travel, with Global YO second; Airalo sits at market and GigSky and GoMoWorld at the top. Every provider except Maya Mobile sells a 1 GB Cambodia plan, and the unlimited table carries Airalo, Ubigi, Yesim, ByteSIM and the global plans. If you are combining Cambodia with Vietnam, compare plans that cover both countries, and read our Vietnam eSIM guide for the other half of the trip. Thailand is covered in our Thailand eSIM guide; remember that the land border between the two was closed as of late August 2026.

Best eSIM for Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Mondulkiri

Holafly, the country pick, has no city-level reports from Cambodia, so the table below cannot confirm it for any one place. Only 8 of the 47 reports name a place at all, and no provider has 3 reports in any single place, so the country pick applies everywhere, with the network information below as the tie-breaker.

Where you are goingWhat the reports showOur pick
Phnom PenhUbigi 0/1, Airalo 0/1, Nomad 1/1, Yesim 1/1Country pick applies (Holafly, capped speed), no provider has 3 or more reports here
Siem Reaptoo few reportsCountry pick applies
Mondulkiritoo few reportsCountry pick applies
Phnom Penh International Airport (old PNH)too few reportsCountry pick applies

Siem Reap has two placed reports, one Airalo success and one Nomad failure, too few to judge. Cellcard, Smart and Metfone all have 5G sites in Siem Reap province [3]. Mondulkiri has one Ubigi report, counted as working, in which the traveler on a regional Asia pass found the eSIM on Cellcard rather than Metfone and called it less reliable there; TRC's June 2026 list shows Smart and Metfone with 5G sites in Mondul Kiri and Cellcard with none [3]. No traveler has reported from the coast or islands yet; TRC's list shows Smart and Metfone with 5G in Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, Kep and Koh Kong and Cellcard with none [3], so for Koh Rong or Kampot a Metfone-based eSIM (Holafly, Ubigi, Nomad, Roamless) or Airalo on Smart is the safer choice than ByteSIM or eSIM4Travel's CamGSM plan. For Ratanakiri, Stung Treng or Pailin, Metfone is the only operator with 5G sites [3].

Best eSIM for Phnom Penh

For Phnom Penh the country pick, Holafly, applies, with the reminder that its speed was capped from the start in our test; among the providers travelers actually placed in the capital, Nomad and Yesim each have one success and Airalo and Ubigi each have one failure. The Ubigi miss is the only one described in the reviews we have: a 30-day unlimited plan that was "unusable even after reset eSim" in April 2026, after which the traveler bought a Smart eSIM at a shop in an AEON mall with a passport and had 4G and 5G. The Airalo misses were in Phnom Penh and at the old airport, and the review texts are not in our set.

Network-wise the capital is the easy case. All three operators have 5G sites in Phnom Penh [3], and Cellcard, which ByteSIM and eSIM4Travel use, is the fastest and most consistent network there according to Opensignal's February 2026 report; its 5G build is aimed at malls, hotels, hospitals and Techo International Airport, according to a trade-press report quoting its CEO in May 2026. Any of the providers that name a network should work in the city; the misses here read like setup or plan trouble rather than dead zones, but the texts do not let us prove it.

Local SIM Cards and Operator eSIMs in Cambodia

A Cambodia SIM card for tourists beats every travel eSIM on price, by a wide margin at every data size, and it includes calls and texts. The trade-off is that you must register with your passport at a counter, and you are offline until you do. As of September 2026, Smart's Traveller SIM costs $5.00 for 30 GB over 15 days with 300 on-net minutes, 30 off-net or international minutes and 300 on-net SMS [6]. Cellcard's Traveller SIM runs from $5.00 for 3 GB over 3 days to $20.00 for 30 GB over 30 days, with minutes and SMS included [9]. Metfone has no branded tourist SIM; you buy a standard starter SIM and add a Data Osja Plus package by USSD code, from $1.00 for 8 GB over 7 days to $10.00 for 100 GB over 30 days, each with minutes and SMS [10].

One detail saves money at Cellcard: its ordinary domestic plans are far better value than its own tourist SIM. As of September 2026, Cellcard's AO MOBILE 5G plans give 20 GB for 7 days for $1.50 and 150 GB for 30 days for $10.00, with unused data rolling over, where the Traveller SIM gives 30 GB for 30 days for $20.00 [9]. A tourist who buys a bare Cellcard SIM and adds a domestic plan gets five times the data for half the price. Smart's tourist SIM does not have this gap, and Metfone's Data Osja Plus is already priced as a domestic plan and is the cheapest per gigabyte in the country [10].

Registration is strict. SIM registration against a passport or national ID is mandatory, and the regulator penalised Viettel (Cambodia), Metfone's operator, on 15 Jun 2026 for selling SIMs without taking ID properly, after three numbers turned up on one person's ID card and one was used in a scam [4]. Smart's eSIM self-service flow needs an eSIM-capable phone, Wi-Fi, a national ID or passport, a document scan and a face scan [7]. Foreigners can buy in their own name, according to traveler guides; no Cambodian sponsor is needed. Travel blogs report third-party phone shops charging several times the operator price and sometimes skipping registration, which risks a later cut-off; we could not confirm this, so buy at an operator counter or shop. A traveler who gave up on Ubigi in Phnom Penh in April 2026 bought a Smart eSIM with just a passport at an operator shop in an AEON supermarket and got calls and SMS included.

Where to buy: Smart says its Traveller SIM is sold at its booth at every international airport in Cambodia [6], and in the city at Smart Shops, Cellcard stores and Metfone showrooms. All three operators also sell eSIMs: Smart through the SmartNas app, its website or any shop [7], Cellcard and Metfone through their websites. No operator publishes an airport surcharge, and we could not confirm airport prices at Techo International Airport, the new Phnom Penh airport. A local SIM wins if you stay a week or more, want a local number, or need lots of data; a travel eSIM wins if you want data the moment you land, do not want a registration step in a foreign language, or are only passing through for a few days.

Mobile Networks in Cambodia

Cambodia has four licensed mobile operators, and three of them matter: Smart, Cellcard and Metfone [1] [2]. The fourth, Seatel (branded "yes"), holds a licence and the 018 prefix but we found no tourist offer or coverage map for it. Metfone is the best network for a trip that leaves the Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville triangle; Cellcard is the fastest in Phnom Penh; Smart is the best compromise, with 5G across 20 provinces including the whole coast. The country has 21.7 million mobile subscriptions against 17,640 fixed lines, so there is no landline fallback anywhere [1].

5G launched at all three operators on 1 Jan 2026 [3]. TRC's count on 8 Jun 2026 gave Smart 748 5G base stations, Cellcard 742 and Metfone 601, but the spread tells the real story: Metfone has 5G sites in all 24 provinces, Smart in 20 (missing Pursat, Ratanak Kiri, Stung Treng and Pailin) and Cellcard in only 4 (Kandal, Kampong Speu, Siem Reap and Takeo), with none on the coast or in the north-east [3]. Cellcard said in May 2026 that it had 500 5G sites and a target of more than 1,000 by the end of July 2026, according to a trade-press report; that figure conflicts with TRC's 742 three weeks later, and we could not confirm whether the target was met. On 4G, Cellcard claims more than 3,100 sites and over 90% nationwide coverage, an undated operator claim [8]; Smart publishes a district-by-district 4G and 5G list [5]; Metfone publishes a map but no figure [11]. Opensignal's February 2026 report, an independent measurement we could not read in full, gives Cellcard the best download speed and consistency, Metfone the best reliability and Smart the best video experience; all three posted better download results than in 2025.

Who rides which network, from the providers' own Cambodia pages as of September 2026: Airalo on Smart [12]; Holafly [13], Nomad [14], Ubigi [15] and Roamless [16] on Metfone; ByteSIM on Cellcard [17]; eSIM4Travel on CamGSM (Cellcard) with Smart and Metfone also listed. Jetpac and Maya Mobile are reported on Metfone by third parties only. Saily, Yesim, GigSky, Global YO and GoMoWorld did not name a network on their pages when we checked in September 2026. No provider publishes a history of its network partners, and one Ubigi traveler found a regional pass on a different network than the plan page named, so treat every mapping as current, not permanent. On generations: the operators still list 2G and 3G alongside 4G and 5G, and several travel eSIMs are sold as 4G only here (Jetpac's Cambodia plans, eSIM4Travel's CamGSM plan, Roamless's Metfone listing); Ubigi lists 3G/4G/5G [15]. For whether 5G is worth paying for, see our 4G vs 5G explainer.

How to Set Up an eSIM for Cambodia

Install before you fly, on Wi-Fi, and switch the line on when you land. Almost every provider here starts the plan on first connection in Cambodia, not at install; the two exceptions are Yesim, whose plan started at purchase in our test, and GoMoWorld, which does nothing until you press Start in its app. If this is your first eSIM, our first eSIM guide walks through compatibility, purchase and install.

  1. Check your phone. iPhones bought in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao usually have no eSIM hardware, with a few exceptions, according to the compatibility pages of eSIM4Travel and Simify. Our list of phones with eSIM support covers the rest.
  2. Buy a few days ahead, not weeks. Activation windows differ: eSIM4Travel 90 days, Nomad 60 days then auto-start [14], Jetpac 3 months, Ubigi 6 months (its QR code stays valid that long), Saily 180 days then auto-start. Yesim's plan ran from purchase in our test, so buy that one last.
  3. Install at home on Wi-Fi. Airalo, eSIM4Travel, Ubigi, Yesim, ByteSIM, Jetpac, Nomad, Holafly and Maya Mobile send a QR code by email; Saily, GoMoWorld, Roamless, GigSky and Global YO install from their apps. Our guides show the steps on iPhone and on Samsung.
  4. On landing, turn on the eSIM line, select it for mobile data and enable data roaming. Global YO and Maya Mobile may need the APN set to "globaldata", Ubigi uses "mobiledata", and Roamless's preselected APN did not work in our test until we chose another network profile by hand. GoMoWorld: press Start.
  5. If data does not flow, switch off your physical SIM for a moment (Jetpac and GigSky needed this in our tests), toggle airplane mode, and pick the network manually if the provider names one. Our troubleshooting guide has the full checklist.
  6. Do not delete the eSIM while traveling. Holafly and Global YO eSIMs cannot be reinstalled once deleted; Roamless and Ubigi keep your credit or plan if you do. Keep your home SIM active for banking codes, since most of these eSIMs are data only.

Calls and SMS in Cambodia

Cambodia's calling code is +855. Every Cambodia plan in our comparison tool is data only, so calls go over WhatsApp, Telegram or another app, and Cambodia's regulator announced delays in Telegram call connections in June 2026. If you need a real number, the options are: Saily's optional US number with calls and SMS, which its Cambodia page lists (checked September 2026); Jetpac's in-app voice packs; Roamless's in-app calls and optional US, UK, Canadian or Australian number; Global YO's outgoing calls through its separate YO.IO app; and Airalo's Discover+ global plan, which adds calls and texts on a US number and covers Cambodia. None gives you a Cambodian number.

The simplest way to get a local number is a local SIM. Smart's, Cellcard's and Metfone's tourist and prepaid packages all include minutes and SMS [6] [9] [10]; the local SIM section above has the current packages and prices. A traveler who switched from Ubigi to a Smart eSIM in Phnom Penh in April 2026 pointed out exactly this: 150 minutes and 150 SMS came with it, while the travel eSIM gave data only. Holafly's and Yesim's paid add-ons offer numbers that can receive SMS, which helps with verification codes, but they are not Cambodian numbers either.

Free eSIM Data for Cambodia

Roamless gives new users a free 450 MB Cambodia eSIM, listed in our comparison tool and on its Cambodia page [16], valid 30 days from activation with no throttling; it runs on Metfone. Nomad's Cambodia page offers a free 1 GB trial for new users [14]. GigSky gives a free 100 MB trial for 7 days with no card required, and Jetpac's Eterna eSIM comes with a free 100 MB. GoMoWorld has a free 1-day trial. Holafly's "Always On" gives 1 GB a month after a paid plan ends if you keep the eSIM [13]. These are enough to test the install and find your hotel, not to run a trip; our free eSIM guide lists every trial we know of and its catches.

Frequently Asked Questions About eSIMs in Cambodia

Which eSIM works best in Cambodia?
Holafly had the best record in traveler reports from Cambodia: it worked for all 6 travelers who reported, on the Metfone network, but in our hands-on test its speed was capped from the start, so it suits maps and messaging rather than big downloads. Global YO worked for 4 of 5 at a much lower price, with slow support. Ubigi worked for 3 of 4, with its one miss in Phnom Penh. Compare current prices with (eSIM Comparison).
What is the cheapest eSIM for Cambodia?
eSIM4Travel is usually the cheapest eSIM for Cambodia in our comparison, with Global YO second; both sit well below the market average, while GigSky and GoMoWorld are among the most expensive here. A local SIM is far cheaper still, by a wide margin at every data size; the local SIM section has the prices. Live eSIM prices are in (eSIM Comparison).
How much data do I need for Cambodia?
Enough for maps, messaging and photos, which means a small plan for most trips, and every provider here except Maya Mobile sells 1 GB, 3 GB, 5 GB and 10 GB Cambodia plans. Unlimited plans come from Holafly, Airalo, Ubigi, Yesim and ByteSIM, each with a daily or fair-use slowdown, and Ubigi's allowance is the largest. For a figure based on your own habits, use (Travel Data Calculator).
Is a Cambodia SIM card for tourists better than an eSIM?
A local SIM is far cheaper and includes calls and texts, but you need your passport at the counter and you are offline until it is registered. Smart sells a tourist SIM at its airport booths, Cellcard sells one in its stores, and Metfone sells cheap domestic data packages. A travel eSIM wins when you want data the moment you land or stay only a few days.
Which eSIM works in Phnom Penh?
The reports from Phnom Penh are split: Nomad and Yesim each worked for one traveler, Airalo and Ubigi each failed for one, and the Ubigi miss was described as an unusable connection in April 2026. All three Cambodian operators have 5G in the capital, and Cellcard is the fastest there according to Opensignal, so any provider that names its network should work. The country pick, Holafly, applies, with its capped speed.
Can I make calls with a Cambodia eSIM?
Not on a Cambodian number: every Cambodia eSIM plan in our comparison is data only, so calls go over WhatsApp or a similar app. Saily, Roamless and Airalo's Discover+ plan offer US or other foreign numbers, Jetpac sells voice packs and Global YO calls through its own app. Cambodia's calling code is +855; a local SIM from Smart, Cellcard or Metfone includes minutes and SMS.
Does 5G work with a travel eSIM in Cambodia?
Sometimes. 5G switched on at all three operators on 1 Jan 2026, and Metfone is the only one with 5G sites in all 24 provinces, but several travel eSIMs are sold as 4G only here, including Jetpac's Cambodia plans and eSIM4Travel's. Ubigi lists 3G, 4G and 5G on Metfone, and Holafly connected on 5G right away in our test. Whether 5G is worth paying for is covered in (4G vs. 5G: Differences and whether 5G is worth it).

Summary: the best eSIM for Cambodia

Based on 47 traveler reports from Cambodia and our own tests, Holafly is the best option for most trips: it worked for all 6 travelers who reported, on Metfone, the network with 5G in every province, but its speed was capped from the start in our test, its hotspot stops at 1 GB a day and it cannot be topped up. Global YO is the cheap choice for travelers who install at home, with 4 of 5 reports working and slow support as the weak spot. Ubigi worked for 3 of 4 and has the most generous unlimited plan here, but its one miss was in Phnom Penh and its help desk never answered us. Airalo worked for 3 of 5 and is the easiest app, with both misses in and around Phnom Penh. eSIM4Travel is usually the cheapest eSIM in our comparison with a human help desk, but it has no app and no Cambodia reports yet.

Nomad (4 of 8) and Maya Mobile (4 of 10) had the weakest records here, and the rest have too few reports to judge. Whatever the choice, installing before the flight avoids the most common problems, and a trip to the coast, the islands or the north-east favours a provider that names Metfone or Smart. For a week or more in one place, a local SIM with your passport is far cheaper than the best eSIM for Cambodia and comes with a local number.
