Best eSIM for Indonesia in 2026: 14 Providers Ranked by Traveler Reports

Best eSIM Indonesia
Key Takeaways

Key takeaways

Of 381 traveler reports from Indonesia, Nomad has the best record, 25 of 25, though our test found no route to a human help desk. Maya Mobile (101 of 108) suits island hopping on one unlimited plan; its misses were slow data in Bali. Jetpac (36 of 39) adds in-app calls and free maps after data runs out. Ubigi (26 of 29) suits Java and Lombok but only half its Bali reports were positive. Holafly (40 of 45) had the best remote-area record, but its speed was capped in our test. eSIM4Travel is the cheapest here with the best help desk we tested, but has no Indonesia reports and no app.

The best eSIM for Indonesia depends less on price than on which local network the provider rides. Indonesia is an archipelago of thousands of islands, and the three operators left after the 2022 and 2025 mergers cover them very differently. According to Opensignal's July 2026 report, Telkomsel wins the Coverage award by a wide margin and has done so in every report it checked, while XL is now the fastest and most reliable network and Indosat scores highest for consistent quality. A provider on Telkomsel is the safer bet once you leave Java and Bali; a provider on Indosat or 3 alone is the one whose travelers complain about patchy signal. The same report states that Indonesia has already switched off 3G, so a phone that cannot do 4G gets nothing at all.

Two local rules matter for the choice. Every prepaid SIM bought in Indonesia needs a passport at the counter, and foreign phones used with a local SIM fall under the IMEI whitelist; stays under 90 days generally need no customs registration, according to several consistent reports. A travel eSIM that roams on a local network sidesteps both. Travelers also report airport SIM counters at 4 to 10 times city prices, so the local-operator savings in this article depend on buying online or in town, not at Ngurah Rai or Soekarno-Hatta on arrival.

One date to know: once a year Bali switches mobile data off for Nyepi. Indonesian press reports that the regulator Komdigi asked operators to deactivate cellular data across Bali for 24 hours from 06:00 on 19 March 2026, with Wi-Fi unaffected, as it did in March 2025. No eSIM helps on that day. The rest of this guide ranks 14 providers on 381 traveler reports, then covers plans, Bali, Jakarta and Lombok, local SIM cards, networks, setup and calls.

Best eSIM Providers for Indonesia

eSIM plans in Indonesia at a glance

How well each provider's eSIM works in Indonesia

The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in Indonesia. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

How we got these numbers: we read 381 public customer reviews that mention Indonesia or a place in it, published between July 2023 and August 2026, and counted a report as "worked" when the reviewer said the eSIM connected, even with small hiccups. We treat 20 or more reports as strong evidence, 3 to 19 as limited, and fewer than 3 as too few to judge. A count like 23 of 25 means the eSIM worked well for 23 of the 25 travelers who reported from here; each provider section says what went wrong for the rest. The Vefru test score is a separate number: our own hands-on test of the provider, run outside Indonesia, so it says how the provider behaves, not how the network performs here. Local operator prices in the text were checked on 25 September 2026; provider ratings, the plan tables and the price-per-GB chart are live and update on their own.

Nomad eSIM in our hands

Nomad testing preview Nomad testing speed 1 Nomad testing speed 2 Nomad testing support

Based on the traveler reports, Nomad is the best option for most trips to Indonesia: it worked well for all 25 travelers who reported from here (100%), strong evidence and the only clean sheet among the providers with 20 or more reports. The successes cover the places most people go and several they do not: Bali, Sumatra, Flores, Gili Meno and Lombok, plus Singapore transit on the same regional eSIM. Several reviewers described mostly 5G on the APAC plan and a connection that came up on landing without touching any settings.

No report counted as a miss, but two 4-star reviews carry warnings. One traveler in May 2026 found the Bali service poor with many disconnections, and another in Bali called it very good but pricey. One reviewer needed three replacement QR codes in Aug 2026, each sent by the app without questions. Support solved a top-up problem in Bali quickly by chat. "Best provider for Flores Indonesia. All works fine.." wrote one traveler on 21 Jul 2026.

Nomad's Indonesia page names Telkomsel, the network with the widest coverage in Opensignal's reports, which fits the record outside Bali [8]. Our comparison tool lists country plans from 1 GB (3 or 7 days) to 50 GB (45 days), unlimited plans for 5 or 10 days at 2 GB a day, after which Nomad's page says speed drops sharply [8], and APAC, SEA-Oceania and Global regional plans that also cover Indonesia. The app has a home-screen widget for remaining data and lets you install at home, since the plan starts on first connection. On price it sits at the market average in Indonesia. The main drawback is from our hands-on test: the chat bot looped and never handed us to a person, so this is a pick for travelers who will not need help, as our Nomad review explains. You can buy at Nomad.

Maya Mobile eSIM in our hands

Maya Mobile testing preview Maya Mobile testing speed 1 Maya Mobile testing speed 2 Maya Mobile testing support

Maya Mobile is the pick for anyone visiting several islands on one plan, because its single global unlimited eSIM has by far the most reports from Indonesia and a strong record: it worked well for 101 of 108 travelers (94%). The successes reach further than any other provider's: Java and Bali, Lombok and Jakarta, North Sumatra and Lake Toba, Raja Ampat, North Sulawesi, North Maluku and West Papua, cruise ports, and one traveler on a boat in open sea. Reviewers repeatedly describe 5G in cities and a connection that starts the moment they land.

The seven misses cluster in and around Bali. Travelers reported no service at all in Bali (Aug 2026), very slow data in Bali (May 2025), slow data in Bali and Lombok (Mar 2025), a bad connection in Bali (Jan 2025) and five days without a byte on Nusa Lembongan (Apr 2024). Others who counted as positive still describe dead spots near Komodo National Park, a struggle at Mount Batur and Labuan Bajo, and patchy signal in Gresik near Surabaya. The pattern is not dead zones in the far east but weak or congested cells in Bali's outskirts and the small islands off it. Maya refunded several of these travelers in full, and a few activation problems were fixed by email or chat within minutes.

What sets Maya apart is the plan range: our comparison tool lists only global unlimited plans for 3, 7, 14 and 30 days, plus Global + Cruise versions, with 5 GB a day at full speed and a slower rate after that. There are no small country plans, so a two-day stop in Bali pays for a global plan. Hotspot is included, the QR arrives by email, the app is optional, and the plan activates on first connection. It is the cheapest global unlimited plan in our comparison by a wide margin. Maya does not name its Indonesian networks on its page, so we could not confirm them. In our hands-on test the WhatsApp bot ignored our message before a human took over, and the throttle after the daily allowance was the fairest of the unlimited plans we tested; our Maya Mobile review has the detail. "in Indonesia I was in a boat in the middle of the sea and still the network with Maya worked super well", one traveler wrote on 20 Apr 2024. Plans are at Maya Mobile.

Jetpac is a Singapore eSIM provider with plans in 129 countries. It adds extras like in-app calls, free WhatsApp and Google Maps after your data runs out, and lounge access on delayed flights. Its website, app and support are rough, so it suits travelers who can fix small issues themselves.

Jetpac eSIM in our hands

Jetpac testing outdoor Jetpac testing speed 1 Jetpac testing speed 2 Jetpac testing support

Jetpac is the pick for travelers who want calls, a working map after the data runs out and a quick WhatsApp help desk, and its Indonesia record backs that up: it worked well for 36 of 39 travelers (92%), strong evidence. The successes name Bali, Kuta, Ubud, Lombok, Batam, East Kalimantan and Jakarta. A striking number of positive reviews start with an activation hiccup, often on a second family phone, that a named agent fixed by WhatsApp within minutes, sometimes by re-issuing the eSIM.

The three misses are harder. One traveler in Bali in Apr 2026 found the network extremely poor and could not install the eSIM on an iPhone; another had barely any coverage for six weeks in Indonesia and ran out of data; a third in Jun 2025 was charged for eSIMs that never arrived and could not install the app from Bali's app store. Among the positives, one couple found Jetpac too slow at Ngurah Rai airport for the immigration app and slow around Bali (Apr 2025), and one traveler in Jakarta had only slow LTE throughout the city (Mar 2025). Airport arrival is the moment to have the eSIM installed and a backup ready.

Jetpac does not name its Indonesian network on its page; networks are listed per plan in the app, and a third-party audit reports Telkomsel, which we could not confirm. Our comparison tool lists Indonesia plans from 1 GB (4 days) to 40 GB (30 days), 1-day packs of 3 to 10 GB, and unlimited plans for 3 to 30 days with 5G on every Indonesia plan; Jetpac's page says unlimited runs at 3 GB a day then slows, with unlimited tethering and unused packs held for 3 months [11]. On packs of 3 GB or more, WhatsApp, Google Maps, Uber and Grab keep working after the data runs out, and in-app voice packs add calls. On price it sits around the market average in Indonesia. The drawbacks come from our test: a slow site with pop-ups and a rough app, described in our Jetpac review. "I had coverage in kuta and in ubud it is fine also", one reviewer wrote on 11 Aug 2025. Packs are at Jetpac.

Ubigi is the travel eSIM brand of Paris operator Transatel, with one reusable eSIM for 200+ destinations. Data was fast in our test, and its 3 GB, 10 GB and 30-day unlimited plans are cheap. Its weak point is support: a chatbot that ends in an email ticket, with no live agent.

Ubigi eSIM in our hands

Ubigi testing preview Ubigi testing speed 1 Ubigi testing speed 2 Ubigi testing support

Ubigi is a pick for Java, Lombok and travelers who may need to top up with no Wi-Fi, but not for Bali. It worked well for 26 of 29 travelers who reported from Indonesia (90%), strong evidence, yet only 10 of its 20 Bali reports were positive. Successes name Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Lombok ("incredible connectivity"), Sulawesi and parts of Bali, and several reviewers call it the cheapest plan they found and easy to switch to the next country.

The three misses were all in Bali in 2026: one eSIM that did not work at all (Apr 2026), one with very poor coverage and no calls (Apr 2026), and one that was activated but unusable (Jul 2026). Many of the positive Bali reviews are 3-star: no signal in Ubud, poor reception around Lovina and Munduk in the north, an unstable connection in Nusa Dua, LTE only and never 5G, and slow 4G across Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Bali. Ubigi offered one traveler a full refund.

The likely reason is the network: Ubigi's partner list names Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison alone for Indonesia [9], which Opensignal rates well on consistent quality but far behind Telkomsel on coverage. Our comparison tool lists Indonesia plans of 1 GB (7 days), 3 GB (15 days), 10 GB (7 or 30 days) and 25 GB (30 days), unlimited for 7, 15 or 30 days, and Asia and World plans; there is no 5 GB or 20 GB size. Ubigi's plan page says the eSIM can be installed within 6 months, keeps a persistent profile and lets you top up with a zero balance [10], which our test confirmed. Price sits at the market average here, with the cheapest 30-day unlimited median in our comparison. The drawbacks are from our test: a clunky site and app, and a support ticket with no reply in 24 hours, the worst outcome we had; see our Ubigi review. "Quite easy to set up, incredible connectivity and reception in Lombok!" wrote one traveler on 25 May 2026. Plans are at Ubigi.

Holafly eSIM in our hands

Holafly testing outdoor Holafly testing support Holafly testing support 2 Holafly testing speed

Holafly is the pick for travelers heading beyond Bali's resorts who do not want to think about data, with one condition: in our test, Holafly's speed was capped from the start. It worked well for 40 of 45 travelers who reported from Indonesia (89%), strong evidence, and the successes are the most rural of any provider: the higher areas of Java and Bali, a month in remote areas, Bali's rainforest, a little Indonesian island, Lombok, camping in the countryside and the whole of Bali from Seminyak to Uluwatu. The cap means enough for maps, messaging, browsing and streaming, but slow for large downloads, uploads, cloud backups and laptop work. The hotspot is limited to 1 GB a day on the product page [6], though a Holafly blog says 500 MB, and there are no top-ups: when a plan ends you buy a new eSIM.

The five misses are about speed and activation, not dead zones. One traveler had one bar most of the time and was told the operator limits usage when cells are busy (Jun 2026); another got LTE the whole time and blamed a foreign card; another found it extremely slow in Bali in 2023 while friends on Nomad and Airalo were fine; one found it intermittent then dead for days (May 2026); one who installs five eSIMs for family on every trip calls each trip a nightmare. Several positives also describe a replacement eSIM from support before it worked, and one reviewer's children had a better connection on their home operator's roaming.

Holafly's Indonesia page names XL and Telkomsel, the two leaders in speed and coverage in Opensignal's July 2026 report [6]; another Holafly page names Telkomsel, Indosat or XL, so which network you land on is not fixed. Our comparison tool lists unlimited-only plans for 3 to 30 days, and Holafly's page sells 1 to 90 days [6]. Every Holafly eSIM comes with 1 GB a month after the plan ends if you keep it installed [6]. The plan is dearer than other unlimited plans in our comparison, and the app opens as a shop with the login tucked under Profile. Installation was one tap with 5G at once in our test, but the speed was a fraction of a local SIM on the same cell; our Holafly review shows the numbers. "Great reception in Java and Bali, also in the higher area's." wrote one traveler on 23 Aug 2026. Plans are at Holafly.

eSIM4Travel eSIM in our hands

eSIM4Travel testing outdoor eSIM4Travel testing speed 1 eSIM4Travel testing speed 2 eSIM4Travel testing support

eSIM4Travel is the pick for the lowest price in Indonesia and the best help desk we tested, with one honest gap: there are no traveler reports from Indonesia yet, so we cannot say how it performs here. It is the cheapest provider in our comparison for Indonesia by a clear margin, and in our hands-on test one click took us from the bot to a person who solved the problem and suggested a network switch. The eSIM installed from a QR code and worked right away, bought on the website and sent by email with no app needed.

Our comparison tool lists Indonesia plans labelled Telkomsel/XL, from 1 GB (1 or 7 days) to 50 GB (30 days), unlimited plans for 3 to 30 days at 3 GB a day then slowed, and South East Asia, South Asia and Global regional plans that include Indonesia. eSIM4Travel does not name its Indonesian network on its page, so the network label comes from our tool, not from a checked page. In our test there was no throttling and a hard stop at the limit, and the plan starts on first connection with 90 days to activate. The downsides are the same everywhere: no app, no Google Pay, and no way to top up without Wi-Fi once the data runs out, which matters on an island hop. For 1 to 20 GB it is hard to beat on price, as our eSIM4Travel review shows, and plans are at eSIM4Travel.

Other eSIM Providers for Indonesia

We tested all of these too. They sit here because their Indonesia record is weaker (Airalo, ByteSIM), because fewer than 20 travelers have reported with them (Roamless, Saily, Global YO, GoMoWorld), or because the reports are too few to judge (GigSky, Yesim).

Airalo eSIM in our hands

Airalo testing outdoor Airalo testing speed 1 Airalo testing speed 2 Airalo testing support

Airalo is the biggest name but not a top pick for Indonesia: it worked well for 27 of 34 travelers (79%), strong evidence and the weakest record among the providers with 20 or more reports. The misses are coverage: no connection at all in Sulawesi (Aug 2026), constant drops with the Indonesia plan for a couple sitting side by side (Aug 2026), very patchy coverage across Indonesia (Jul 2026), no connection or very slow data in many areas of Bali, two eSIMs that never worked while a friend's did, and dropouts in Bali when others had signal. The successes are Bali, Jakarta on unlimited and multi-country Asia packages, with several travelers praising email support that fixed an installation, one after four days without data.

The likely cause is the network: Airalo's Indonesia page names 3 (Hutchison) and Indosat, with no Telkomsel [5]; one Airalo image page lists Telkomsel for a 20 GB plan, which we could not confirm. Our comparison tool lists Indotel plans from 1 GB (3 days) to 50 GB (30 days), unlimited for 3 to 30 days at 3 GB a day then slowed, and Asialink, Discover and Discover+ regional plans, the last with voice and texts. Price sits among the dearer providers in Indonesia. The purchase and app were among the easiest in our test, as our Airalo review shows, so it still suits beginners who stay on Bali and Java. "Very patchy coverage of Airalo in Indonesia made this a frustrating choice of eSIM", one traveler wrote on 24 Jul 2026. Plans are at Airalo.

ByteSIM eSIM in our hands

ByteSIM testing preview ByteSIM testing speed 1 ByteSIM testing speed 2 ByteSIM testing support

ByteSIM is cheap for short trips but has the lowest Indonesia record of the big-sample providers: it worked well for 44 of 57 travelers (77%), strong evidence, and only 19 of its 31 Bali reports were positive. The 13 misses are almost all Bali: no proper connection (Feb 2026), one or two bars and nothing loading (May 2025), unlimited data that never reached 4G, hours without internet, drops every 20 minutes, speeds in the kilobits, no 5G, and one eSIM that routed through Shanghai with Chinese search results. One traveler found it terrible in Bali and Nusa Penida but fine in Jakarta (Apr 2024); another had nothing on the outskirts. The successes describe jungle and rural reception, fast WhatsApp support that re-issued QR codes within minutes, and quick refunds for incompatible phones and wrong purchases.

ByteSIM's page lists XL, 3 and Telkomsel for Indonesia, which we read from the search index and could not open. Our comparison tool lists a huge Indonesia catalogue: daily plans of 500 MB to 3 GB a day for 1 to 30 days, fixed plans of 3 to 50 GB at 3 to 30 days, and unlimited for 3 to 30 days with a throttle whose limit is not stated. There are no top-ups. It is the third cheapest provider in Indonesia in our comparison, and cheaper for short validities. Our test found a clumsy checkout that demands a postal address, a wrapped-website app and no WhatsApp reply in 15 minutes, though customers here report fast replies; our ByteSIM review explains. "Terrible internet connection in Bali and Nusa Penida", one traveler wrote on 10 Apr 2024. Plans are at ByteSIM.

Roamless is a US provider built around one global eSIM for 203 destinations, paid with pay-as-you-go credit. It was fast and unthrottled in our test, and travelers report it working in 91% of cases. Its weak point is buying: the website forces you into the app, and large data amounts cost more than most rivals.

Roamless eSIM in our hands

Roamless testing preview Roamless testing speed 1 Roamless testing speed 2 Roamless testing support

Roamless has a clean but small record: it worked well for 11 of 11 travelers who reported from Indonesia, limited evidence. The successes are Bali, multi-country Asia trips on one eSIM, and a small town in Ende on Flores where the reviewer's friends had little signal. One traveler had a glitch on landing in Bali that a co-founder fixed within hours. No reviewer reported slow data.

Our comparison tool lists Indonesia plans as 30-day fixed plans from 1 to 50 GB and no-expiration credit from 1 to 200 GB, plus Asia and Oceania and Global 30-day plans, all listed as Telkomsel; there is no unlimited plan, no throttling is claimed and tethering is allowed. New users get a free 500 MB Indonesia trial. Price sits at the market average here, cheap for 1 GB and dear above 10 GB because credit has no volume discount. In our test the preselected APN did not work until we picked another, and a trickle of data remained at zero balance so we could top up; our Roamless review has the fix. It suits frequent light users who hop countries, and the eSIM is at Roamless.

Saily is the travel eSIM from the company behind NordVPN, with plans for about 200 destinations. It has the smoothest install we have tested, a polished app and a built-in VPN. But prices run above the market in most big European destinations, and traveler reports sit below average.

Saily eSIM in our hands

Saily testing outdoor Saily testing speed 1 Saily testing speed 2 Saily testing support

Saily is the easiest first eSIM in our test and had no misses here, but only 5 travelers have reported from Indonesia, all positive, so the evidence is limited. The successes are a month across Bali with a clear start at the airport, Singapore plus Indonesia on one plan, and Bali on a multi-country trip; two more reviewers only mention setting up for Bali before departure.

Saily's Indonesia page names Telkomsel on 4G and 5G with unrestricted hotspot and a 180-day activation window [7]. Our comparison tool lists 1 GB for 7 days, 3 to 20 GB for 30 days, an unlimited plan for 15 days at 5 GB a day then slowed, and Asia and Oceania and Global plans. The eSIM is app-only, which our test found the smoothest install of all, with a human help desk that answered fast; our Saily review shows both. The catch is price: Saily is among the two most expensive providers in Indonesia in our comparison. It suits a first-timer who values the app and help desk over cost, at Saily.

Global YO eSIM in our hands

Global YO testing outdoor Global YO testing speed 1 Global YO testing speed 2 Global YO testing support

Global YO is the budget option with a good Bali record: it worked well for 15 of 16 travelers who reported from Indonesia (94%), limited evidence, and all 8 Bali reports were positive. Successes describe full-speed data across Bali, video calls and uploads, rural areas and several provinces on one trip. The one miss was a 20 GB plan that never connected and no reply from support for 24 hours (Nov 2024); another traveler could not connect until support issued a new eSIM, and one found the calling add-on confusing and replies an hour apart.

Global YO does not name its Indonesian network and we could not verify it. Our comparison tool lists Indonesia plans from 1 GB (3 days) to 100 GB (60 days), Day Plans of 3 GB a day for 3 to 30 days flagged as throttled, and Asia, SEA-Oceania and Global Explorer plans; there is no unlimited plan. It is the second cheapest provider in Indonesia in our comparison, best above 10 GB. The purchase is app-only, the app dies when data runs out, and support was slow with template replies in our test, so it suits price-driven travelers who install at home, as our Global YO review explains. "I had good coverage even in some rural areas." wrote one traveler in Indonesia on 21 Oct 2024. Plans are at Global YO.

GoMoWorld eSIM in our hands

GoMoWorld was the fastest and least throttled eSIM in our test, but it has few reports and a high price here: it worked well for 7 of 8 travelers who reported from Indonesia (88%), limited evidence. Successes name Bali for 15 days, the islands of Indonesia and good signal across Indonesia and Malaysia, with one reviewer finding setup tricky the first time. The one miss was an eSIM that simply failed to connect in Bali in Aug 2025, after two good trips elsewhere; GoMoWorld refunded it quickly.

GoMoWorld does not name its Indonesian network and we could not verify it. Its prices are four flat amounts everywhere and the data varies by country, which is why our comparison tool lists Indonesia plans of 1.7 GB (7 days) and 7, 17 or 25 GB (30 days), plus South East Asia plans of 1 to 15 GB, and why it is among the two most expensive providers in Indonesia. The eSIM is app-only, one account covers one device, and the plan does nothing until you press Start, the most common cause of "not working" we saw; our GoMoWorld review explains. Humans answer only in office hours. It suits a heavy user who wants no throttling, at GoMoWorld.

GigSky eSIM in our hands

GigSky testing outdoor GigSky testing speed 1 GigSky testing speed 2 GigSky testing support

GigSky has too few reports from Indonesia to judge: it worked well for 2 of 3 travelers. Both successes were in Bali, one after another provider's eSIM had failed; the miss was a free Visa cardholder plan in Jakarta with awful reception and barely usable data (Mar 2026).

GigSky does not disclose its networks by policy, and its page gives two different daily allowances for the unlimited pass [12]. Our comparison tool lists Indonesia plans of 1 GB (7 days), 3 GB (15 days), 5 and 10 GB (30 days) and a 1-day unlimited pass, plus Asia Pacific, World and cruise plans. Price sits around the market average here. The app must be installed to buy, but it stays online after the data runs out so you can buy more without Wi-Fi, which only Ubigi matched in our test; our GigSky review has the details. It suits cruise passengers calling at Indonesian ports, at GigSky.

Travelers also write about Simify, an Australian-run provider, mostly from Bali; it is not in our comparison tool and we have neither tested it nor counted its reports.

Best eSIM Plans for Indonesia

Price per GB in Indonesia by eSIM Provider

How much does each provider charge per GB in Indonesia? The chart below compares plans of 1 to 10 GB that last 6 to 14 days, the usual range for a one- or two-week trip. Provider websites show only their own plans, so this side-by-side view is one you would otherwise have to calculate yourself. A shorter bar means a lower price per GB.

Generated 28.10.2026 22:03

The tables below show the cheapest current plan per provider at each size. For a Bali week, 5 GB covers maps, messaging and social media; for a month across the islands with video calls, 20 GB or an unlimited plan is the safer choice. If you are pairing Indonesia with Thailand, our tool can compare plans that cover both countries in one search, and our Thailand guide ranks the providers there. Travelers combining Bali with Australia will find our Australia guide useful too.

Best eSIM for Bali

Maya Mobile is the pick for Bali: it worked well for 46 of 53 travelers who reported from the island, by far the largest sample, and its misses were slow or absent data in patches, not a plan that fails to connect. Holafly worked for 18 of 20 and reviewers praised coverage from Seminyak to Uluwatu and in the rainforest, but its speed was capped from the start in our test, so it is the second choice. Global YO (8 of 8) and Roamless (5 of 5) had clean records with smaller samples, and Nomad (8 of 9) had one report of frequent disconnections.

The runners-up miss for the same reasons. ByteSIM's Bali reports split 19 to 12, with travelers describing drops, kilobit speeds and an eSIM that routed through Shanghai; Ubigi split 10 to 10, with the north of the island (Lovina, Munduk) and Nusa Dua the weak spots, which fits its Indosat-only network. Airalo's two Bali misses were dead zones and slow data in many areas. At Ngurah Rai airport, reviewers describe Holafly, Maya Mobile and Saily eSIMs coming up within minutes of landing, while one Jetpac couple found theirs too slow for the immigration app. Remember the Nyepi blackout: on 19 and 20 March 2026 all mobile data on Bali was off for 24 hours, and the same will apply on Nyepi in 2027.

Best eSIM for Jakarta

No provider has 3 or more reports from Jakarta, so the country pick, Nomad, applies. Of the 10 reports, Maya Mobile and Jetpac each worked for 2 of 2, and one Holafly traveler called the speed in Jakarta fine for anything; Airalo's single report praised unlimited data in the city. The two misses are telling: GigSky's free Visa cardholder plan was unusable for a week in Jakarta (Mar 2026), and one ByteSIM eSIM connected to servers in Shanghai with slow data. One Jetpac traveler counted as a success still reported slow LTE across the city (Mar 2025), and one Ubigi traveler had inconsistent 4G in Mangga Dua.

Best eSIM for Lombok

No provider has 3 or more reports from Lombok, so the country pick, Nomad, applies, and Nomad's one Lombok report worked, including transit via Singapore on the regional eSIM. Jetpac, Ubigi and Holafly each have one positive report, Ubigi's calling the connectivity incredible. Maya Mobile is the one to watch: it split 2 to 2 on Lombok, with two travelers describing super slow data on Bali and Lombok, one adding Sumbawa and the Gili islands. For the eastern islands in general, Opensignal's coverage lead for Telkomsel suggests a provider on that network (Nomad, Saily, and Holafly in part); Maya Mobile's reports from Raja Ampat, North Maluku and West Papua were positive, but its network there is not disclosed.

Local SIM Cards and Operator eSIMs in Indonesia

A local operator eSIM beats every travel eSIM on price for a stay of a week or more, and the two biggest operators now sell one online to foreigners without a shop visit. As of 27 Aug 2026, XL's Xtra Combo Flex eSIM for foreign passport holders costs Rp46,000 for 14 GB, Rp70,000 for 30 GB, Rp100,000 for 55 GB, Rp140,000 for 80 GB and Rp168,000 for 150 GB, each with 5 minutes of calls and 30 days of validity, bought on xl.co.id and active within an hour [2]. These may be promotional prices. Telkomsel's tourist eSIM, the WNA Tourist Starterpack, costs Rp150,000 for 25 GB, Rp200,000 for 35 GB, Rp250,000 for 60 GB, Rp400,000 for 100 GB and Rp800,000 for 200 GB, all 30 days, as of 25 Sep 2026 [4]. Telkomsel's physical Tourist Prepaid Card costs Rp150,000 for 25 GB on all networks plus 25 minutes of local calls, valid 30 days [3]; you pre-order on telkomsel.com within 14 days of travel and collect at a GraPARI store, with pick-up points reported in Yogyakarta, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara.

Third-party reports also list Indosat IM3 Travel On packs at Rp100,000 for 30 GB and Rp200,000 for 80 GB with international minutes, sold at airport counters, IM3 galleries and in the myIM3 app, and a Smartfren tourist pack at Rp200,000 for 14 days of unlimited data; we could not confirm either on an operator page. The rules are the same for all: a passport for every registration, and XL's online flow also asks for your email and IMEI and gives no refund if registration is rejected [2]. Telkomsel limits the number of SIMs per passport. Phones used with a local SIM fall under the IMEI whitelist, but several consistent reports say stays under 90 days need no customs registration; beyond that you register with Bea Cukai, free below a US$500 device value.

What to avoid is the airport counter: travelers report 4 to 10 times the city price for the same Telkomsel pack, and convenience stores often cannot complete foreigner registration. The verdict is simple. For a week or more on Java or Bali, or any trip that needs a +62 number, the XL or Telkomsel eSIM wins on price by a wide margin. A travel eSIM wins for arrival-day data without a counter, trips under three days, multi-country routes, and anyone who prefers not to hand over a passport and IMEI.

Mobile Networks in Indonesia

Three operators remain after two mergers: Telkomsel, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IM3 and 3) and XLSmart (XL, AXIS and Smartfren, merged in April 2025). The regulator is Komdigi, the renamed Kominfo [1]. Which network is best depends on what you measure. According to Opensignal's July 2026 report, Telkomsel wins coverage by a margin of more than three points on a ten-point scale and has won it in every report checked, while XL took ten sole awards including all four speed awards and reliability, and Indosat leads on consistent quality and time on network. In the Bali and Nusa Tenggara region, Opensignal found Telkomsel fastest overall and XL fastest on 5G. The report is one cycle old and reverses Telkomsel's earlier speed lead, so treat the speed ranking as provisional until the next one.

For a trip this means: on Java and in Bali's south all three networks work and speed differences are small; once you head to the eastern islands, Sumatra's interior, Sulawesi or Papua, Telkomsel's reach matters more than anything else. Among the providers here, Saily's and Nomad's pages name Telkomsel [7] [8], Holafly's names XL and Telkomsel [6], Airalo's names 3 and Indosat without Telkomsel [5], and Ubigi's partner list names Indosat alone [9]. ByteSIM's indexed page lists XL, 3 and Telkomsel; Jetpac is reported on Telkomsel by a third party only; eSIM4Travel and Roamless carry Telkomsel labels in our comparison tool; Maya Mobile, Global YO, GoMoWorld, GigSky and Yesim do not say. The two providers without Telkomsel, Airalo and Ubigi, are also the two with the most coverage complaints in Bali.

Opensignal also states that Indonesia has shut down 3G, so make sure your phone can use 4G on Indonesian bands; 5G is widely available on XL and Indosat but on fewer than a third of Telkomsel connections in that report. Komdigi's 2026 spectrum auction awarded 700 MHz and 2.6 GHz blocks to all three operators with coverage obligations running to 2029, so rural 4G reach should keep improving [1]. If you want to switch networks on a multi-network eSIM, our guide to eSIMs with several networks shows how, and our 4G versus 5G explainer says whether 5G is worth chasing.

Install the eSIM at home before you fly, on Wi-Fi, and keep your home SIM active for bank SMS codes. Almost every provider here starts the plan on first connection in Indonesia, so installing early costs nothing; the exceptions are Yesim, whose plan started at purchase in our test, GoMoWorld, which does nothing until you press Start in the app, and some Airalo packages that start on install.

  1. Check that your phone is unlocked and can use eSIM and 4G; our first-eSIM guide covers compatibility.
  2. Buy the plan. Nomad, Saily, Global YO, GoMoWorld, Roamless and GigSky need their app; Maya Mobile, Holafly, Jetpac, Ubigi, Airalo, ByteSIM, Yesim and eSIM4Travel send a QR code by email.
  3. Install it at home, following our iPhone guide or our Samsung guide. Mind the activation windows: Nomad gives 60 days [8], eSIM4Travel 90, Saily 180 [7], Ubigi 6 months [10], and Jetpac holds unused packs for 3 months [11].
  4. On landing, switch mobile data to the eSIM, turn data roaming on for that line, and set the APN if the provider asks (Maya Mobile and Global YO use "globaldata", Ubigi "mobiledata", GigSky "gigsky"; our Roamless test needed a manual APN change).
  5. Keep your physical SIM's data off; Jetpac and GigSky travelers lost data until they did.
  6. No signal? Pick the network manually in your phone's settings before contacting support; several Bali misses above were fixed that way or with a re-issued eSIM. Our troubleshooting guide lists the steps in order.

Calls and SMS in Indonesia

Indonesia's calling code is +62, and most travel eSIMs here are data-only, so calls go over WhatsApp, which is also how most Indonesian businesses, drivers and villas reply. Jetpac is the exception with in-app voice packs sold in minutes [11]; Global YO and Roamless add outgoing VoIP calls in their apps, and Roamless and Saily sell a second number, though Saily's add-on is a US number, not an Indonesian one [7]. Airalo's Discover+ regional plan is the only plan in our comparison tool with voice and texts included, with a US number. In our Jetpac test the recipient saw a US number on calls, so none of these gives you a local +62 number.

If you need a real Indonesian number for Gojek, bank apps or bookings, a local operator SIM is the only route: XL's foreigner eSIM includes 5 minutes of calls [2], Telkomsel's Tourist Prepaid Card 25 minutes [3], and Indosat's Travel On packs are reported to include international minutes. Receiving SMS codes from your home bank is easier: keep your home SIM active alongside the eSIM, as several reviewers here did.

Free eSIM Data for Indonesia

Roamless gives new users a free 500 MB Indonesia eSIM that does not expire, listed in our comparison tool as a 30-day trial that starts on activation and can be used globally. Nomad lists a 1 GB Indonesia trial plan for 3 days, GoMoWorld offers a free 1-day trial, and GigSky gives 100 MB and free plans to some Visa cardholders, though one Jakarta traveler found that free plan unusable. These are enough to test setup and get a taxi app running on landing, not for a trip. Our round-up of free eSIM data keeps the current list.

Frequently Asked Questions About eSIMs in Indonesia

Which eSIM works best in Indonesia?
Nomad had the best record in traveler reports from Indonesia: it worked well for all 25 travelers who reported, from Bali to Flores and Sumatra, though our test could not reach a human at its help desk. Maya Mobile worked for 101 of 108 on one global unlimited plan, with misses mostly slow data in parts of Bali. Holafly had a strong remote-area record, 40 of 45, but its speed was capped from the start in our test. Compare them with (eSIM Comparison).
What is the best eSIM for Bali?
Maya Mobile had the best Bali record with a large sample: 46 of 53 travelers said it worked, and the misses were slow or patchy data in the outskirts and on Nusa Lembongan, not a dead plan. Holafly worked for 18 of 20 with praise for coverage across the island, but its speed was capped in our test. Global YO worked for all 8 of its Bali reporters and is among the cheapest here. ByteSIM and Ubigi had the most Bali complaints.
What is the cheapest eSIM for Indonesia?
eSIM4Travel is usually the cheapest in our comparison for Indonesia, followed by Global YO and ByteSIM, while Saily and GoMoWorld are among the most expensive. eSIM4Travel has no traveler reports from Indonesia yet and no app, so it suits people who install at home. For unlimited data, Maya Mobile's global plan is the cheapest unlimited option we list. Live prices are in (eSIM Comparison).
How much data do I need for Indonesia?
Maps, WhatsApp and ride apps use little data, so a 5 GB plan covers a Bali week for most people, while daily video calls or streaming on hotel Wi-Fi gaps push a month across the islands toward 20 GB or an unlimited plan. Unlimited plans here slow down after a daily allowance, so a heavy user is better served by a large fixed plan. For a figure based on your own habits, use (Travel Data Calculator).
Is an Indonesia SIM card for tourists cheaper than a travel eSIM?
Yes, by a wide margin per GB. XL and Telkomsel both sell tourist eSIMs online to foreign passport holders with tens of gigabytes for 30 days and a +62 number, and the local SIM section above gives the current prices. The catches are passport and IMEI registration, Telkomsel's limit on SIMs per passport, and airport counters that travelers report at 4 to 10 times the city price. For trips under three days or several countries, a travel eSIM is simpler.
Can I make calls with an Indonesia eSIM?
Most travel eSIMs for Indonesia are data-only, so calls go over WhatsApp. Jetpac sells in-app voice packs, Global YO and Roamless offer app calls, and Airalo's Discover+ plan includes voice and texts, but all of these show a foreign number. For a local +62 number you need an operator SIM; the calling code is +62 and XL's tourist eSIM and Telkomsel's tourist card include a few minutes of calls.
Does an eSIM work in Bali during Nyepi?
No. Bali switches mobile data off for 24 hours on Nyepi, the Balinese day of silence; in 2026 the blackout ran from 06:00 on 19 March to 06:00 on 20 March at the regulator's request, and the same happened in March 2025. Wi-Fi is not affected, so hotel Wi-Fi still works. No eSIM or local SIM gets around it, and operators warn customers by SMS in advance. The 2027 date is not yet confirmed.

Summary: the best eSIM for Indonesia

Based on 381 traveler reports and our own tests, Nomad is the best option for most trips to Indonesia: it worked well for all 25 travelers who reported, on Telkomsel, with the one weakness that our test could not reach a human at its help desk. Maya Mobile is the choice for island hopping on one unlimited plan, with 101 of 108 positive reports and misses mostly slow data around Bali. Jetpac (36 of 39) adds in-app calls, free maps and WhatsApp after the data runs out and a quick help desk, with a rough app. Ubigi (26 of 29) suits Java and Lombok but only half of its Bali reports were positive and we could not reach its support. Holafly (40 of 45) had the best remote-area record on unlimited data, but its speed was capped from the start in our test and it sells no top-ups.

eSIM4Travel is the cheapest provider for Indonesia in our comparison and had the best help desk we tested, but has no traveler reports from Indonesia yet and no app. Airalo and ByteSIM, both with strong samples, had the most coverage complaints, mostly in Bali. For a week or more on Java or Bali, a local XL or Telkomsel eSIM costs far less, if you are happy to register a passport and IMEI. Whichever you choose, install it before you fly, and remember that no eSIM works on Bali during Nyepi. That is our view of the best eSIM for Indonesia in 2026, and the live tables above carry today's prices.
