Key Takeaways

Key takeaways

Based on 204 traveler reports and our tests, the best option for most trips to Hong Kong is Holafly: it worked well for 37 of 41 travelers, but in our test its speed was capped from the start. Maya Mobile (21 of 26) suits longer and multi-country trips, with the fairest unlimited allowance we tested. Nomad (37 of 47) alone names the best-measured network, with no reachable help desk. ByteSIM worked for all 16 who reported, cheap for short trips, clumsy checkout. GoMoWorld (3 of 3) suits heavy users who press Start in its app. eSIM4Travel (3 of 4) is cheapest here, best help desk we tested, no app.

The best eSIM for Hong Kong is less about coverage than about three things that trip travelers up before they land. First, the phone: most iPhones sold in Hong Kong have two physical SIM slots and no eSIM at all. Apple's own list of eSIM-capable Hong Kong and Macao models runs iPhone 17e, 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, Air, 16e, 13 mini, 12 mini and the SE from the second generation on, so a Hong Kong-market iPhone 14, 15 or 16 cannot run any plan on this page [9]. If your phone is from anywhere else, you are fine.

Second, registration. Every SIM issued in Hong Kong has needed Real-Name Registration since 24 February 2023, and visitors without a Hong Kong ID register online and wait for a manual document check [5]. The data-only travel eSIMs compared here carry no local number, and none of the provider pages we checked in September 2026 asks for registration; we could not confirm this with the regulator, so treat it as reported. A local tourist SIM or eSIM with a +852 number does go through the check.

Third, where you will use it. 5G reaches more than 99% of the population, including every MTR line, but the regulator puts mobile coverage of the country parks at around 80% and of the main government hiking trails at around 95% [3]. One operator switched off 3G in June 2025 and 2G is gone, so an old phone will not connect [3]. Arrivals who want a local SIM find the 1O1O counter in the Meeters and Greeters Hall at the airport [7]; we found no airport premium on the csl tourist SIM.

Best eSIM Providers for Hong Kong

eSIM plans in Hong Kong at a glance

How well each provider's eSIM works in Hong Kong

The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in Hong Kong. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

How we got these numbers: we read 204 public customer reviews that mention Hong Kong or a place in it, published between September 2024 and August 2026, and counted a report as "worked" when the reviewer said the eSIM connected, even with small hiccups. We treat 20 or more reports as strong evidence, 3 to 19 as limited, and fewer than 3 as too few to judge. A count like 37 of 41 means the eSIM worked well for 37 of the 41 travelers who reported from here; each provider section says what went wrong for the rest. The Vefru test score is a separate number: our own hands-on test of the provider, run outside Hong Kong, so it says how the provider behaves, not how the network performs here. Local operator prices in the text were checked on 25 September 2026; provider ratings, the plan tables and the price-per-GB chart are live and update on their own.

The Best group is the six providers at the top of this table: the traveler record in Hong Kong decides the order, price position comes second, and our hands-on test findings (throttling, help desk, app) come third and are stated as drawbacks rather than used to reshuffle a clearly better record.

Holafly is an Irish eSIM provider built around unlimited data, with trip eSIMs for 200+ destinations. Travelers report it working more often than any other provider we track. Its weak points are speed and price: our test ran at about 30 Mbps on 5G, and its unlimited plans cost more than most.

Holafly eSIM in our hands

Holafly testing outdoor Holafly testing support Holafly testing support 2 Holafly testing speed

Holafly is the pick for travelers who want data that connects and never want to count gigabytes, and the one who should know that in our test its speed was capped from the first megabyte. It worked well for 37 of 41 travelers who reported from Hong Kong (90%), the best record of the 14 providers here and strong evidence. In practice the capped speed is enough for maps, messaging, browsing and streaming, and slow for large downloads, uploads, cloud backups and laptop work over the hotspot. Holafly's hotspot allowance is 1 GB a day on the product page (its blog says 500 MB), and there are no top-ups: when a plan runs out you buy a new eSIM.

The four misses are a small share of a large sample, and they fit Holafly's wider record, where it is the most reliable of the 14 providers across all countries. Holafly's plan page does not name its Hong Kong network; Holafly's own SIM-card guide names csl and 3 HK, so we list that as reported, not verified. Deleted eSIMs cannot be reinstalled and the QR scans once, so install on the phone you will travel with.

Holafly sells unlimited plans only, priced by the day from 1 to 90 days, with a fair-use rule it acknowledges but does not quantify (as of September 2026). Its Hong Kong plans were not in our comparison tool when we exported the plan data, so there is no plan table below; Holafly's own page listed them when we checked. On price it sits among the more expensive unlimited offers in our comparison. In our test it was the only provider throttled before any data was used, a small fraction of what a local SIM got on the same cell; the details are in our Holafly review. For a one-tap install with no QR, a human help desk after a short bot, and a connection that travelers in Hong Kong rarely report as dead, it remains the safest choice, with that one stated drawback. Holafly's Hong Kong eSIM is sold on its own page.

Maya Mobile eSIM in our hands

Maya Mobile testing preview Maya Mobile testing speed 1 Maya Mobile testing speed 2 Maya Mobile testing support

Maya Mobile is the pick for a week or more in Hong Kong, or a trip that continues to Japan, Taiwan or the mainland, because one global unlimited plan covers all of it with the most generous daily allowance we tested. It worked well for 21 of 26 travelers who reported from Hong Kong (81%), strong evidence, and the one place-level report we have, from Lamma Island, was a success. Across all countries Maya has the second-best reliability record of the 14 providers, behind Holafly.

Five of the 26 reports did not work. Maya's weak spots in the wider reports are Taiwan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Morocco and Egypt rather than Hong Kong, so there is no Hong Kong-specific failure pattern we can point to. The two things to set up yourself are the APN "globaldata" and data roaming; in our test 5G came up at once after that. Support is WhatsApp only: a bot ignored our message, a five-step form followed, and a human replied after about nine minutes with template answers.

What sets Maya apart is what it sells: no Hong Kong-only plans, no fixed-data plans, just global unlimited for 3, 7, 14 or 30 days, plus a pricier Global + Cruise version, each with 5 GB a day at full speed and then a slower rate, according to our comparison tool. In our test the slowdown kicked in after roughly 5 GB a day and reset daily, the fairest unlimited rule we measured, with no throttling before it; the test is in our Maya Mobile review. Maya's own site in September 2026 described a flat daily subscription with no caps at all, which conflicts with the daily allowance its plans list, so check the plan page before you buy. On price it is the cheapest global unlimited plan in our comparison for a week or more, and poor value for a one- or two-day visit, since it sells nothing small. Hotspot is included and the QR arrives by email, so no app is needed. Maya Mobile's plans are sold on its site.

Nomad eSIM in our hands

Nomad testing preview Nomad testing speed 1 Nomad testing speed 2 Nomad testing support

Nomad is the pick for experienced users who want the strongest Hong Kong network and will not need the help desk. It is the only provider here whose own page names China Mobile Hong Kong (CMCC HK) alongside csl and 1O1O [16], and CMHK was named Best Network in Opensignal's May 2026 report, with the most time on 5G of the four operators. It worked well for 37 of 47 travelers who reported from Hong Kong (79%), the largest sample of any provider here and strong evidence.

Ten of the 47 reports did not work, the most misses of any provider on this page in absolute terms. Nomad's wider record is average across all countries and strong in Asia, so the Hong Kong share of misses is higher than its norm. The finding from our test that matters most here: Nomad's AI bot looped on an APN question and offered no route to a human, so if the eSIM does not connect on landing you are on your own with the troubleshooting steps. Nomad is a multi-network eSIM, so you can switch the operator manually in the phone's network settings when one is weak; its page says CMHK is possible, not guaranteed.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: Hong Kong plans from 1 GB for 3 or 7 days through 3, 5 and 10 GB for 30 days to 20 and 50 GB for 45 days, plus unlimited for 5 or 10 days with 2 GB a day at full speed and a slow rate after that, and regional APAC and global plans that also cover Hong Kong. The Hong Kong plans are marked 4G, the unlimited plans 4G/5G. Activate within 60 days or the plan starts by itself, as of September 2026 [16]. The app has a unique home-screen widget showing remaining data, and it dies at zero, so top up before you run dry. On price Nomad sits slightly below the market average overall; the test is in our Nomad review. It suits anyone who installs at home, knows how to pick a network, and values a free 1 GB trial. Nomad's plans are sold through its app.

ByteSIM eSIM in our hands

ByteSIM testing preview ByteSIM testing speed 1 ByteSIM testing speed 2 ByteSIM testing support

ByteSIM is the pick for a short, cheap Hong Kong trip by someone who has installed an eSIM before. It worked well for 16 of 16 travelers who reported from Hong Kong (100%), limited evidence but with no miss at all, and ByteSIM's wider record is excellent across Japan, Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong. The company is registered in Wan Chai, Hong Kong, which fits the record. The drawback is everything before the connection: in our test the checkout demanded a phone number and full postal address, the app threw install errors and auto-activation failed, and the WhatsApp help desk that promises a reply in five minutes gave none in fifteen.

With no failures in the reports, the pattern that matters is in our own test rather than in Hong Kong: manual installation worked and the network came up in about a minute, so the app problems are avoidable by installing from the emailed QR. ByteSIM sells no top-ups, so size the plan for the whole stay.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: the biggest Hong Kong catalogue on this page, with daily plans of 500 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB or 3 GB a day, fixed plans from 3 GB up to 90 GB, and unlimited plans with a daily full-speed allowance, all at validities from 1 to 30 days, where longer validity costs more. Its global eSIM excludes Hong Kong, so pick the Hong Kong or the China + Hong Kong + Macao product. ByteSIM's page markets "no ID registration" and offers local numbers in some countries, but not for Hong Kong (as of September 2026). On price it is among the cheaper providers for 3 to 10 GB on short Asian trips and dear for 20 GB and up; it also lists more than 50 local payment methods, Alipay included. Our test found no throttling before the cut-off; the full test is in our ByteSIM review. ByteSIM's Hong Kong plans are sold on its site.

GoMoWorld eSIM in our hands

GoMoWorld testing preview GoMoWorld testing speed 1 GoMoWorld testing speed 2 GoMoWorld testing support

GoMoWorld is the pick for heavy data users who will remember to press Start in the app. It worked well for 3 of 3 travelers who reported from Hong Kong (100%), limited evidence and the smallest sample in the Best group. Both reviews we could read were multi-country trips: a cruise from Hong Kong to Singapore in March 2025, where a wrongly activated Singapore plan was fixed by email within the day, and a May 2026 trip through South America, China and Hong Kong where several plans sat active at once and the eSIM switched between countries by itself. One wrote that it "worked perfectly each time" (Apr 2025).

There are no misses to describe. The failure to watch for is the one our test found: the plan does nothing until you press Start or schedule it in the app, which is a common cause of "not working" on arrival. Unstarted plans do not expire, and GoMoWorld says a plan that cannot be activated is refunded in full (as of September 2026). Support is a good bot plus humans in office hours only, so a Saturday-night problem waits until Monday.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: Hong Kong plans of 3.5 GB for 7 days and 17, 35 or 55 GB for 30 days, marked 5G, plus a South East Asia regional plan (1 to 15 GB, 4G) that also covers Hong Kong. No unlimited plan, no calls, hotspot allowed. The eSIM is never emailed, one account is one device, and family members need their own accounts. In our test GoMoWorld was the fastest provider we have measured, with no throttling even after more than 10 GB in a day; the numbers are in our GoMoWorld review. On price it sits below the market average for 5 GB and up and is poor value for 1 GB. GoMoWorld's plans are sold through its app.

eSIM4Travel testing outdoor eSIM4Travel testing speed 1 eSIM4Travel testing speed 2 eSIM4Travel testing support

eSIM4Travel is the pick for travelers who want the lowest price and a help desk with a person on it. Only 4 travelers have reported from Hong Kong so far; it worked well for 3 of 4 (75%), too thin a sample to say more than that. The case rests on what the files show: its 3 to 10 GB Hong Kong plans were the cheapest in our comparison tool when we checked in October 2026, and it is the cheapest provider in our comparison across countries. In our hands-on test the bot handed us to a person in one click, who solved the problem and added a tip on switching networks.

We cannot describe the one miss, because the review text is not in our file. What the test found: the eSIM installed from a screenshot of the QR and worked right away, bought on the website and sent by email with no app needed. Its page names 3 HK as its Hong Kong network [13], the operator with the lowest average download speed of the four in Opensignal's May 2026 report but the highest time on any network; the plan names in our comparison tool say CSL instead, and we could not confirm which is current.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: Hong Kong plans of 1 GB for 7 days and 3, 5, 10, 20 and 50 GB for 30 days, plus a 12-country South East Asia regional plan; its page also lists unlimited plans of 3 to 30 days with 3 GB a day at full speed and then a throttled rate, daily plans that drop to a crawl after the allowance, and a 90-day activation window [13]. The downsides stay: no app, no Google Pay, and no way to top up without Wi-Fi once the data runs out. Its iPhone compatibility page still carries the old short list of Hong Kong models, so use Apple's list instead. Our test found no throttling before the hard stop; the details are in our eSIM4Travel review. eSIM4Travel's Hong Kong eSIM is sold on its own page.

Jetpac worked well for 17 of 18 travelers who reported from Hong Kong (94%), limited evidence, and it is the first provider outside the Best group only because GoMoWorld's three reports had no miss. The one miss, from April 2026, described barely usable data from the day of landing in Hong Kong and on into mainland China, with no help from support. The successes have a pattern: many of them say the eSIM did not connect on arrival in Hong Kong until a WhatsApp chat with support fixed it, usually in 10 to 30 minutes, by refreshing the network, adjusting phone settings, or deleting and reinstalling. A February 2026 reviewer called the 10 GB Hong Kong plan "reliable through out with no dropping of connection" once it was running. Several used one eSIM across Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China with no trouble.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: Hong Kong plans from 1 GB to 40 GB at validities from 1 to 30 days, and unlimited plans of 3 to 30 days, all marked 4G only; the Asia Pacific regional plans that also cover Hong Kong are marked 5G. Unlimited slows after 3 GB a day. WhatsApp, Google Maps, Uber and Grab stay free after the data runs out on packs of 3 GB and up, and in-app voice packs let you call out, which no other provider here offers in that form. In our test the site was slow and the app rough, with a usage counter that lagged; the test is in our Jetpac review. On price it sits at the market average. Jetpac suits frequent flyers who value the lounge-delay perk and calls, and will keep WhatsApp support handy on landing. Jetpac's plans are sold on its site.

Airalo eSIM in our hands

Airalo testing outdoor Airalo testing speed 1 Airalo testing speed 2 Airalo testing support

Airalo worked well for 6 of 7 travelers who reported from Hong Kong (86%), limited evidence, a better share than its record across all countries, where it has the lowest reliability of the 14 providers. We cannot describe the one miss, because the review text is not in our file. Airalo's page names Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT) as its network, confirmed across three language versions on 25 September 2026 [14]; an older Airalo product ran on 3 HK, which third-party pages still repeat.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: the Hong Kong eSIM is branded Hkmobile, with 1 GB for 3 days, 3 GB for 3 or 7 days, 5 and 10 GB for 7, 15 or 30 days, 20 GB for 15 or 30 days, 50 GB for 30 days, and unlimited from 3 to 30 days at 3 GB a day, then throttled. The Asialink regional and Discover global plans also cover Hong Kong, and Discover+ adds calls and texts with a US number. Airalo's own blog says no identity check is needed for Hong Kong. In our test purchase and install were among the easiest, data worked instantly, and support reached a human after a queue; it is in our Airalo review. On price Airalo is at the market average and never the cheapest in a popular destination. It suits beginners and anyone who wants calls, at a higher price. Airalo's Hong Kong eSIM is sold on its own page.

GigSky eSIM in our hands

GigSky testing outdoor GigSky testing speed 1 GigSky testing speed 2 GigSky testing support

GigSky worked well for 15 of 18 travelers who reported from Hong Kong (83%), limited evidence; three misses in a sample this size is the weakest share among the providers with more than ten reports here. We cannot describe the misses, because the review texts are not in our file. GigSky's wider record is below average across all countries. Its page does not name a Hong Kong network, and GigSky carries the warning about Hong Kong-market iPhones without eSIM.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: Hong Kong plans of 1 GB for 7 days, 3 GB for 15 days, 5 and 10 GB for 30 days, and a 1-day unlimited pass, plus Asia Pacific regional plans and Cruise + Asia Pacific plans that cover Hong Kong and the ship. GigSky lists a free 100 MB trial for 7 days and says its unlimited plans slow after 2.5 GB a day and are never cut off (as of September 2026). You must install the app to buy, but the app stays partly online when the data runs out, so you can buy a new plan without Wi-Fi, which only Ubigi matched in our test; support answered at once. The test is in our GigSky review. On price GigSky is the most expensive provider overall in our comparison, although its entry plans and 1-day passes are cheap. It suits a Hong Kong stop on a cruise or a one-day visit. GigSky's Hong Kong eSIM is sold on its own page.

Ubigi is the travel eSIM brand of Paris operator Transatel, with one reusable eSIM for 200+ destinations. Data was fast in our test, and its 3 GB, 10 GB and 30-day unlimited plans are cheap. Its weak point is support: a chatbot that ends in an email ticket, with no live agent.

Ubigi eSIM in our hands

Ubigi testing preview Ubigi testing speed 1 Ubigi testing speed 2 Ubigi testing support

Ubigi worked well for 10 of 13 travelers who reported from Hong Kong (77%), limited evidence, and the three misses share a theme: activation. One reviewer could not activate on landing in Hong Kong in June 2026 even on good Wi-Fi and bought a rival eSIM; another spent hours in June 2026 following support's APN, roaming and reinstall steps until the fix turned out to be typing "mbb" into the iPhone's LTE setup field, which support never suggested, while a family member on Ubigi had stable 5G in the same place; a third lost the connection on the bridge toward Macao in July 2026 and could not reach anyone. A fourth report, counted as working, says the SIM only started a few days after arrival. Among the successes, one July 2026 reviewer wrote that it "worked great for me in Hong Kong and China" on the regional pass, and one in April 2026 found all international apps available. One July 2026 reviewer reported 4G only and slow data in Hong Kong, and Ubigi's own plan page shows a no-5G marker for Hong Kong that we could not confirm [17].

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: Hong Kong plans of 3 GB for 15 days, 10 GB for 7 or 30 days, 25 GB for 30 days, and unlimited for 7, 15 or 30 days; the Asia regional plans (500 MB to 200 GB) and World plans also cover Hong Kong. Ubigi publishes the clearest fair-use rule on this page: the 7-day unlimited plan gives 20 GB and the 30-day plan 60 GB at full speed, then a throttled rate, on the SmarTone network, and an unscanned QR stays valid for six months [17]. In our test the site and app were the weakest we tried and an email ticket went unanswered for 24 hours, which matches the Hong Kong reviews; you can, though, buy more data at zero balance. The test is in our Ubigi review. On price it sits just below the market average, with the cheapest 30-day unlimited plan in our comparison. It suits tech-savvy users who want a big fair-use allowance and can fix an APN themselves. Ubigi's plans are sold on its site.

Saily eSIM in our hands

Saily testing outdoor Saily testing speed 1 Saily testing speed 2 Saily testing support

Saily worked well for 2 of 3 travelers who reported from Hong Kong (67%), limited evidence and too small a sample to carry a recommendation either way. We cannot describe the one miss, because the review text is not in our file. Saily's page names HKT as its network and says there are no hotspot restrictions; it also gives a 180-day activation window, where an earlier version of the page said 30 days, so check before you buy [15].

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: Hong Kong plans of 1 GB for 7 days and 3, 5 or 10 GB for 30 days, plus global plans that cover Hong Kong; Saily's page also lists a 20 GB plan and unlimited from 5 to 30 days [15]. The eSIM is app-only, and the app may be blocked in mainland China, so set it up before an onward trip. In our test the app, the in-app install and the help desk were the most polished of the 14 providers, and a human answered fast; the test is in our Saily review. On price Saily is among the two most expensive providers in most popular destinations. It suits a first eSIM when price matters less than the app. Saily's Hong Kong eSIM is sold on its own page.

Global YO worked well for 3 of 5 travelers who reported from Hong Kong (60%), limited evidence and the lowest share on this page. We cannot describe the two misses, because the review texts are not in our file; Global YO's wider record is weak across East Asia and below average overall. No unlimited. Purchase is app-only, with Google Pay but no PayPal, and a deleted eSIM cannot be reinstalled. In our test the first support reply took ten minutes and was a template; the test is in our Global YO review. Roamless worked well for 2 of 2 travelers who reported from Hong Kong, too few to judge, although its record across all countries is the third best of the 14 providers. Its page does not name a Hong Kong network; its own comparison table lists Hong Kong as 4G with no speed limits (as of August 2026), and our comparison tool lists it as CSL. The plan is one global eSIM with pay-as-you-go credit that does not expire.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: Hong Kong credit packs from 1 GB to 100 GB with no expiry, 30-day fixed plans from 1 GB to 50 GB, an Asia and Oceania regional plan, and a free 400 MB trial for new users. No unlimited, no throttling claimed, unlimited hotspot, in-app calls and an optional second number. In our test the preselected APN did not work until we picked the Proximus profile, and the Android app link was dead; the test is in our Roamless review. On price it is among the cheapest for 1 GB and among the dearest for 10 GB and up, with no volume discount. It suits frequent multi-country travelers who use little data. Yesim worked well for 1 of 1 travelers who reported from Hong Kong, too few to judge. Its page does not name a Hong Kong network and its fair-use rule follows the operator's, without a number (as of September 2026). In our test the plan started at purchase rather than on first use, so buy it close to departure or use the "Activate later" option.

What it sells here, from our comparison tool: Hong Kong unlimited plans for every length from 1 to 30 days, fixed plans of 500 MB for 1 day and 1, 5, 10, 20 or 30 GB for 30 days, and an Asia regional plan that also covers Hong Kong. Providers travelers report from Hong Kong that we have not tested

Best eSIM Plans for Hong Kong

Price per GB in Hong Kong by eSIM Provider

How much does each provider charge per GB in Hong Kong? The chart below compares plans of 1 to 10 GB that last 6 to 14 days, the usual range for a one- or two-week trip. Provider websites show only their own plans, so this side-by-side view is one you would otherwise have to calculate yourself. A shorter bar means a lower price per GB.

Generated 25.10.2026 13:33

One thing to know before you read the tier tables: they mix plan families. Nomad and Airalo sell Hong Kong-only plans, Maya Mobile sells only a global unlimited plan, Roamless sells credit that never expires, and Jetpac's Hong Kong plans are 4G only while its Asia Pacific plans are 5G. If Hong Kong is one stop on a longer trip, the Hong Kong and Japan comparison shows the regional plans that cover both, and our Japan guide, Thailand guide and Vietnam guide have the reports from the countries travelers most often pair with Hong Kong in the reviews.

Best eSIM for Lamma Island, the Macau Bridge and the Country Parks

Hong Kong is small enough that almost every traveler report names the territory, not a district, so the country-level pick applies everywhere. Holafly, the overall pick, has no place-level reports. Only two places were named at all, with one report each.

Where you are goingWhat the reports showOur pick
Lamma Islandtoo few reports (Maya Mobile 1/1)Country pick applies
Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (shared with China and Macau)too few reports (Ubigi 0/1)Country pick applies

The one Lamma Island report, on Maya Mobile, worked. The one bridge report, on Ubigi's Asia plan in July 2026, lost the connection near Macao and never came back, and a second Ubigi reviewer in April 2026 had no connection in Macau at all on a plan that included it while it worked well in Hong Kong. A Hong Kong-only plan stops at the boundary by design; for a day in Macau or the mainland, the regional plans from Jetpac, Ubigi, Nomad and Airalo cover all three, and Jetpac's reviews include several trouble-free Hong Kong, Macau and mainland trips. The airport is where things go wrong: a string of Jetpac reports from 2025 and 2026 and two Ubigi reports from June 2026 describe no data on landing until support, a reinstall or a manual setting fixed it, so install and test the eSIM on the airport Wi-Fi before you leave the hall.

No traveler reports name the country parks or hiking trails yet; the regulator puts mobile coverage of the country parks at around 80% and of the main government trails at around 95%, with 33 base stations serving the parks and remote areas [3], and publishes 171 trail-by-trail coverage maps [4]. The 5G restriction zone around Tai Po was lifted on 31 October 2024 [8]; we could not confirm whether the Stanley zone still applies, and csl's own 5G page still lists both plus Ma On Shan, parts of Sha Tin, Fanling and Sai Kung as restricted. A multi-network eSIM, Nomad here, is the one that lets you switch operator on a trail; see how to switch networks on an eSIM.

Local SIM Cards and Operator eSIMs in Hong Kong

A local tourist SIM beats a travel eSIM when you want a +852 number, Macao data, a stay of more than ten days or more than about 10 GB; a travel eSIM wins when you want to skip the registration check, the queue, and the need for a phone that can receive SMS. Per gigabyte, no travel eSIM on this page beats the csl or CMHK tourist offers.

csl and 1O1O sell the Discover Hong Kong Tourist SIM at the 1O1O Centre in the airport's Meeters and Greeters Hall (Level 5, Terminal 1), in csl and 1O1O shops, at more than a thousand 7-Eleven and Circle K stores, and at the HKTB visitor centre at the Star Ferry concourse, at the same price everywhere [7]. As of September 2026 the 7-day SIM with 50 GB (20 GB for Hong Kong and Macao plus 30 GB local) cost HK$88 and the 15-day SIM with 80 GB cost HK$118, both with 5G, unlimited local calls and csl Wi-Fi [7]; the 3-day tier with 15 GB was listed at HK$58 by csl and HK$48 on airport signage, a conflict we could not settle. Beyond the fair-use allowance (5 GB on the 1-day, 15 GB on the 3-day, 50 GB on the 7-day pass) the speed drops sharply and tethering, streaming, VoIP and file transfers stop working, a rule no travel eSIM here applies [10].

csl also sells a tourist eSIM, which third-party guides wrongly say does not exist. On 25 September 2026 the 7-day eSIM was listed at HK$68, down from HK$88, and the 15-day eSIM at HK$88, down from HK$118, with the same data as the physical SIM and unlimited local calls [11] [12]. The terms matter: your phone must receive SMS, because the registration code arrives that way; the eSIM is QR only, one device, and cannot be moved, replaced or refunded after it is bound; and Real-Name Registration must be completed before use [11]. The 15-day eSIM was out of stock when we first checked on 2 September 2026, so availability is unstable.

Registration is the real cost of going local. Since 24 February 2023 every SIM used in Hong Kong needs Real-Name Registration; Hong Kong ID holders use iAM Smart, and visitors upload their documents online and wait for a manual check by the operator [5]. Since 31 December 2024, calls from a newly activated prepaid SIM play a voice alert to the person you call [5]. The other operators' tourist offers are reported by third-party guides only, not verified on the operators' own sites: three provider guides consistently list a CMHK 5G tourist SIM with 5 GB a day plus Macau data and 30 local minutes, from HK$28 for 1 day to HK$128 for 15 days, as of 2026; SmarTone's tourist SIMs are reported to be sold at Circle K, SmarTone shops and vending machines at Mong Kok East and Kowloon Tong, and no longer at the airport. Hong Kong charges no VAT or sales tax, so the listed price is final.

Mobile Networks in Hong Kong

China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK) is the strongest network, and Nomad is the only provider on this page whose page names it. Hong Kong has four consumer operators: HKT (csl, 1O1O, Club SIM, SUN Mobile), CMHK, 3 HK and SmarTone [2]; the regulator's statistics page counts five mobile network operators and 26 virtual operators as of August 2026, and we could not identify the fifth [1]. According to Opensignal's May 2026 report, CMHK won the Best Network title and led on download and upload speed, coverage, consistency and reliability, with 5G available far more often than on any rival; csl was a clear second on speed and coverage and the strongest for gaming and voice apps, but the least consistent; SmarTone was second on consistency and last on 5G availability; and 3 HK had the most time connected to any network but an average download speed about a third of CMHK's.

Which provider rides which network, as the research labels it: Airalo and Saily name HKT on their pages [14] [15], Nomad names CMCC HK, csl and 1O1O [16], Ubigi names SmarTone [17], and eSIM4Travel names 3 HK [13]. Holafly's plan page names none; its own guide says csl and 3 HK. Jetpac, GigSky, Yesim, Global YO, GoMoWorld, ByteSIM, Maya Mobile and Roamless did not name a network on their pages when we checked in September 2026, so for those eight the network is whichever their wholesale partner routes you to, and it can differ by day.

What it means for a trip: in the city, on the MTR and in the business districts any of the four will do, since 5G reaches more than 99% of the population and all MTR lines, with around 18,200 base stations across the 18 districts [3]. On a hike the gaps are real (around 80% of the country parks covered), and the regulator's trail maps are the only per-trail source, because per-operator geographic coverage is not published [3] [4]; the government's index of operator 5G maps is the place to start [6]. 3G is effectively over: one operator shut it down in June 2025 and three operators have shut 2G since 2021 [3], so a 4G phone is the minimum. Our own speed tests ran in Switzerland, Austria and Czechia, not in Hong Kong, and say only whether a provider throttles, so see whether 5G is worth paying for before choosing a plan on that basis.

How to Set Up an eSIM for Hong Kong

Install at home, on Wi-Fi, and test it on the airport Wi-Fi before you leave the arrivals hall. Almost every plan on this page starts on first connection in Hong Kong, not at install; the exceptions are Yesim, whose plan started at purchase in our test, GoMoWorld, which does nothing until you press Start in the app, and some Airalo packages that start at install.

  1. Check the phone. A Hong Kong-market iPhone 14, 15 or 16 has no eSIM; Apple's list of Hong Kong and Macao eSIM models is the one to trust [9], not a provider's compatibility page. If this is your first eSIM, the five-step first-eSIM guide covers the compatibility check.
  2. Buy the plan at home. Activation windows differ (as of September 2026): eSIM4Travel gives 90 days [13], Nomad 60 days and then auto-starts [16], Ubigi six months for an unscanned QR [17], and Saily's page said 180 days in September 2026 where an earlier version said 30 [15]. eSIM4Travel, Airalo, Maya, Ubigi, Yesim, ByteSIM, Jetpac, Nomad and Holafly send a QR by email; GoMoWorld, Saily, Roamless, GigSky and Global YO need the app to buy.
  3. Install it. On iPhone, follow our iPhone eSIM guide; on Samsung, our Samsung eSIM guide. Set the APN where the provider needs one: "globaldata" for Maya and Global YO, "gigsky" for GigSky, "mobiledata" for Ubigi; one Ubigi reviewer in June 2026 only got online after typing "mbb" into the iPhone's LTE setup field. Roamless worked for us only on the Proximus profile.
  4. Leave it off until you land, then switch mobile data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming. Jetpac dropped data in our test until the physical SIM was switched off. GoMoWorld users: press Start.
  5. No data after a few minutes? A delete-and-reinstall fixed several Jetpac arrivals, but Holafly and Global YO eSIMs cannot be reinstalled once deleted, so try the troubleshooting steps first: roaming, APN, manual network selection, restart.
  6. Keep some data back. Most apps die at zero and need Wi-Fi to top up; only GigSky, Ubigi and Roamless let you buy more with an empty balance, and Jetpac keeps WhatsApp and Maps open on packs of 3 GB and up.

Calls and SMS in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's calling code is +852, and no Hong Kong plan from the 14 providers in our comparison tool includes minutes or texts. Calls go over WhatsApp or a similar app, which worked in every Hong Kong report that mentions it. For calling out, Jetpac sells in-app voice packs (the person you call sees a US number), Global YO has outgoing calls through its app, and Roamless has in-app calls plus an optional second number. Airalo's Discover+ global plans, which cover Hong Kong, come with a US number and texts, and Saily sells a US number as an add-on after an identity check.

For a real +852 number, the only routes are local: csl's tourist eSIM and SIM include unlimited local calls [11], CMHK's tourist SIM is reported to include 30 local minutes, and MobiMatter is reported to resell 3 HK eSIMs with a Hong Kong number and minutes, all of which go through Real-Name Registration [5]. Expect the voice alert played to the person you call from a newly activated prepaid number [5]. One warning from a Jetpac test: half of our test SMS arrived an hour late, so do not rely on a travel eSIM for two-factor codes.

Free eSIM Data for Hong Kong

Four providers on this page give free data you can use in Hong Kong. Nomad's page offers a free 1 GB trial [16]; Roamless lists a free 400 MB Hong Kong trial in our comparison tool, new users only, with a 30-day validity from activation; GigSky lists a free 100 MB trial valid for 7 days (as of September 2026); and GoMoWorld offers a free 1-day trial, while Jetpac's free Eterna eSIM comes with 100 MB. None of them is enough for a trip, but all are enough to test the install and the network before you pay. Our round-up of free eSIM trials lists the terms.

Frequently Asked Questions About eSIMs in Hong Kong

Which eSIM works best in Hong Kong?
Holafly had the best record in traveler reports from Hong Kong: it worked well for 37 of 41 travelers, with four misses in a large sample, but in our test its speed was capped from the start. Maya Mobile (21 of 26) and Nomad (37 of 47) are the other strong-evidence picks; ByteSIM worked for all 16 who reported. Compare current prices with (eSIM Comparison).
What is the cheapest eSIM for Hong Kong?
eSIM4Travel is the cheapest provider in our comparison, in Hong Kong and across countries, and its 3 to 10 GB Hong Kong plans were the cheapest in our tool when we checked in October 2026. ByteSIM and Global YO are the next cheapest for short and large plans respectively; Saily and GigSky are the dearest. Live prices are in (eSIM Comparison).
How much data do I need for Hong Kong?
A week of maps, messaging and social media fits the smallest plans here, 1 GB for 7 days from several providers, with 3 to 5 GB as a safe margin. Video, hotspot use and photo backups push you toward 10 GB or an unlimited plan, where the real limit is the daily full-speed allowance, 2 GB a day at Nomad and 5 GB a day at Maya Mobile. For a number based on your own habits, use (Travel Data Calculator).
Can I buy a Hong Kong SIM card for tourists at the airport?
Yes, csl and 1O1O sell the Discover Hong Kong Tourist SIM at the 1O1O counter in the arrivals Meeters and Greeters Hall, at the same price as in city shops and 7-Eleven. You must complete Real-Name Registration with your passport before it activates, and the 7-day SIM includes 50 GB, Macao data and unlimited local calls. The local SIM section above has the prices and the fair-use rule.
Does a Hong Kong eSIM also work in Macau and mainland China?
A Hong Kong-only plan stops at the boundary. Regional plans from Jetpac, Ubigi, Nomad, Airalo and Maya Mobile cover Hong Kong, Macau and the mainland on one eSIM, and Jetpac's reports include several trouble-free three-territory trips. Two Ubigi reviewers lost the connection on the Macau bridge and in Macau itself in 2026, so test the switch before you cross.
Do I need to register my ID for an eSIM in Hong Kong?
Not for the data-only travel eSIMs compared here, as far as the provider pages show; they carry no local number, and Airalo's blog says no identity check is needed, though we could not confirm this with the regulator. Any SIM or eSIM with a +852 number, including csl's tourist eSIM, requires Real-Name Registration, and visitors without a Hong Kong ID wait for a manual document check.
Will TikTok work on an eSIM in Hong Kong?
Usually not. TikTok withdrew from Hong Kong in July 2020, and the block is TikTok's own location check, not a network block, so it depends on whether your eSIM gives you a Hong Kong IP address. Ubigi lets you choose a home or local IP on its plans, and travelers on Ubigi and Nomad reported that their usual international apps worked in Hong Kong and the mainland.

Summary: the best eSIM for Hong Kong

Based on 204 traveler reports and our tests, Holafly is the best option for most trips to Hong Kong: it worked well for 37 of 41 travelers, and its one weakness is the speed cap our test found from the first megabyte, plus a 1 GB-a-day hotspot limit and no top-ups. Maya Mobile (21 of 26) is the pick for a week or more or a multi-country trip, on a global unlimited plan with 5 GB a day at full speed, and nothing small for a weekend. Nomad (37 of 47) is for experienced users who want the network Opensignal rates best in Hong Kong and can live without a help desk; its ten misses are the most on this page.

ByteSIM worked for all 16 travelers who reported and is cheap for short trips, with the clumsiest checkout and app we tested and no top-ups. GoMoWorld (3 of 3) is the heavy-data choice with no throttling in our test, as long as you press Start. eSIM4Travel (3 of 4) is the cheapest here with the best help desk we tested, and no app. Whatever the choice, a phone with eSIM, an install at home and a test on the airport Wi-Fi decide, as much as the provider does, whether you have the best eSIM for Hong Kong on day one.
