Best eSIM for Macau in 2026: 14 Providers Ranked by Traveler Reports

Best eSIM Macau
Key Takeaways

Key takeaways

Based on 26 traveler reports from Macao and our own tests, the best option for most trips is Nomad: it worked well for 5 of 6 travelers who reported from Macao, and it sells 3-day and 7-day Macao plans that fit a short visit, though its help desk could not be reached in our test. Holafly worked well for 3 of 4 travelers and suits anyone who does not want to count data, but in our test its speed was capped from the start and it sells no top-ups. eSIM4Travel is by far the cheapest for Macao in our comparison tool and had the best help desk we tested, but it has no app and no traveler reports from Macao yet.

The best eSIM for Macao is usually a small, short plan: most visitors are same-day visitors, and the average stay is barely over a day, according to the Statistics and Census Service [8]. A 1 GB or 3 GB plan, or an unlimited plan sold by the day, fits that trip better than the 30-day plans most providers push. Most people also arrive by land or sea (the Border Gate from Zhuhai, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, the ferry terminals), not through the airport, so there is no arrival-hall SIM counter on the way for most visitors.

Three things in Macao decide which eSIM to pick. First, Macao switched off 3G on 5 Jun 2025, after shutting 2G earlier, so your phone has to connect on 4G or 5G or it gets nothing [7]. Second, only two of the three licensed operators hold 5G spectrum: the regulator's own table shows 3 Macau (Hutchison) with none [3], and Airalo's Macao eSIM runs on that network [9]. Press reports of a regulator statement in September 2026 say 3 Macau will stop all mobile service on 1 Dec 2026, so Airalo will need a new partner. Third, every local prepaid SIM needs real-name registration with an ID card or passport under Law 13/2019 [1]; a travel eSIM skips that queue entirely.

The territory is small and flat, so distance is not the coverage problem; the one place-level failure in our reports happened on the bridge from Hong Kong. One device warning: according to Apple's own help pages, iPhones sold in Hong Kong and Macao carry eSIM only on a short list of models, so a phone bought locally may not take any travel eSIM at all.

Best eSIM Providers for Macao

eSIM plans in Macao at a glance

How well each provider's eSIM works in Macao

The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in Macao. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

How we got these numbers: we read 26 public customer reviews that mention Macao or a place in it, published between November 2024 and August 2026, and counted a report as "worked" when the reviewer said the eSIM connected, even with small hiccups. We treat 20 or more reports as strong evidence, 3 to 19 as limited, and fewer than 3 as too few to judge. A count like 5 of 6 means the eSIM worked well for 5 of the 6 travelers who reported from here; each provider section says what went wrong for the rest. The Vefru test score is a separate number: our own hands-on test of the provider, run outside Macao, so it says how the provider behaves, not how the network performs here. Local operator prices in the text were checked on 26 Sep 2026; provider ratings, the plan tables and the price-per-GB chart are live and update on their own.

We ranked on traveler reports from Macao first, price position second and our own hands-on findings third; only three providers qualify for the Best group here, because Nomad and Holafly are the only ones with 3 or more reports and a working record, and eSIM4Travel earns its place on price and its help desk. Ubigi also has 6 reports, but every one of them is a failure, and its help desk never answered in our test, so it sits in the Other group.

Nomad eSIM in our hands

Nomad testing preview Nomad testing speed 1 Nomad testing speed 2 Nomad testing support

Based on the reports, Nomad is the best option for most trips to Macao: it has the best record of any provider here and sells Macao plans as short as 3 days. It worked well for 5 of 6 travelers who reported from Macao (83%), which we treat as limited evidence. One of the six said it did not work; the reports give us no detail on where or why.

Nomad's own Macao page names CTM as the network [11], the operator that the regulator's spectrum table shows with the widest 4G allocation and a full set of 5G bands [3]. An older Nomad page listed "CTM, SmarTone" for Macao; SmarTone left the market in 2024, that page is gone, and the live page lists CTM only, so treat any search result that still shows SmarTone as stale. Nomad says you must activate within 60 days of purchase or the plan activates itself, and the plan starts on first connection, so installing at home is safe [11].

In our comparison tool Nomad sells Macao plans from 1 GB to 50 GB with 3-day, 7-day, 30-day and 45-day validities, with add-on data on the plans, and its page lists a free 1 GB trial for new users [11]. There is no unlimited Macao plan; its Regional APAC unlimited plan covers Macao at 2 GB a day before it slows, and a Regional Greater China plan covers Macao with the mainland and Hong Kong. On price Nomad sits around the market average in our comparison, within a few percent of the median at every size. The app is fast and has a home-screen widget that shows remaining data, and the QR code also comes by email. The main drawback is the help desk: in our test the bot looped on a simple question and never handed us to a person, as our Nomad review describes, and there is no refund once a plan is activated. If you are confident you will not need help, Nomad is the pick for Macao.

Holafly is an Irish eSIM provider built around unlimited data, with trip eSIMs for 200+ destinations. Travelers report it working more often than any other provider we track. Its weak points are speed and price: our test ran at about 30 Mbps on 5G, and its unlimited plans cost more than most.

Holafly eSIM in our hands

Holafly testing outdoor Holafly testing support Holafly testing support 2 Holafly testing speed

Holafly is the option for travelers who do not want to think about data at all, with one condition: in our test, Holafly's speed was capped from the start, before any data was used. It worked well for 3 of 4 travelers who reported from Macao (75%), limited evidence; one report said it did not work, and the reports give no detail on where. The capped speed is enough for maps, messaging, browsing and streaming, and slow for large downloads, uploads, cloud backups and laptop work.

Holafly's Macao page names CTM as its network [10], the same operator Nomad uses. The same page caps the hotspot at 1 GB a day, includes a free 1 GB a month after the plan ends if you keep the eSIM ("Always On"), requires data roaming on, and allows a refund of an unused eSIM within 6 months [10]. Holafly sells no top-ups: when a plan ends you buy a new eSIM. The fair-use rule is unclear as of September 2026: one part of the page says the operator may slow speeds above about 90 GB a month, while the FAQ on the same page says fair use applies for no more than a day, and Holafly has not reconciled the two [10].

Holafly sells only unlimited plans, priced by the day from 1 to 90 days, and its page lists Macao plans from 3 to 30 days [10]. At export time our comparison tool carried no Holafly plan for Macao, so there is no plan table here; check Holafly's own page for the current list. On price its unlimited plans are among the most expensive unlimited options in our comparison. Installation is one tap with no QR code, but the QR can be scanned only once and a deleted eSIM cannot be reinstalled, as our Holafly review explains. Holafly suits a short stay with heavy phone use; a laptop worker or a budget traveler has better options above and below.

eSIM4Travel eSIM in our hands

eSIM4Travel testing outdoor eSIM4Travel testing speed 1 eSIM4Travel testing speed 2 eSIM4Travel testing support

eSIM4Travel is the pick for price: in our comparison tool its 2 GB to 10 GB Macao plans sit far below the median of the other providers, and across all countries it is the cheapest provider we compare. There are no traveler reports from Macao yet, so this place rests on price and on our hands-on test, which we ran outside Macao. In that test the eSIM arrived by email, installed from a screenshot of the QR code and worked right away, and the help desk went from a short bot to a person in one click, who solved the problem and added a tip on switching network.

In our comparison tool eSIM4Travel sells Macao plans from 1 GB to 50 GB with validities from 1 to 30 days, plus unlimited plans from 3 to 30 days, which in our test slow after 3 GB a day. The plan names carry CTM, so it is listed as CTM in our comparison tool; the provider's own page did not name a network when we checked in September 2026. Regional plans that include Macao cover China and Macao, China with Hong Kong and Macao, South East Asia and a 72-country global plan. Tethering is allowed, and the validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network, so you can install at home; you have 90 days to activate, and a refund is possible within 2 months if less than a tenth of the data was used.

The downsides stay the same in every country: there is no app, there is no Google Pay (cards are typed by hand, in USD), and once the data runs out you cannot reach the store without Wi-Fi to top up. Data only, no calls. Our eSIM4Travel review has the full test. For a weekend or a day trip from Hong Kong, eSIM4Travel is the cheapest way in our comparison to have data on the Macao side.

Ubigi eSIM in our hands

Ubigi testing preview Ubigi testing speed 1 Ubigi testing speed 2 Ubigi testing support

Ubigi is the one provider we would not pick for Macao on the current evidence: it worked well for 0 of 6 travelers who reported from Macao (0%), limited evidence, and the failures run from April to August 2026. Most of the six were on Ubigi's Asia regional plans. The pattern is the same in each: no data connection in Macao while the same eSIM worked in Hong Kong, in Spain or in the UK; one lost the connection on the bridge from Hong Kong and never got it back; one described service that came and went in both mainland China and Macao; three bought a local or rival eSIM to get online. One reviewer wrote in April 2026: "I bought best asia data plan which includes Macau. But it does not work at all." The reviewer stranded on the bridge also went in circles trying to reach the help desk, which matches our test, where a ticket was still unanswered after 24 hours.

Ubigi's plan page names China Telecom (Macau) for its Macao plan, with 4G and 5G and no 3G, tethering allowed and 6 months to activate. In our comparison tool Ubigi sells Macao plans of 3, 10 and 25 GB (7 to 30 days) and unlimited plans of 7 and 15 days, plus Asia and World plans from 500 MB that cover Macao. In our test the network was fast with no throttling, and Ubigi is one of only two providers whose app let us buy more data at zero balance; its unlimited plans are also among the cheapest in our comparison, and its fixed plans sit just below the market average. None of that helps if the data does not connect, and our Ubigi review already flags China and Macao as its weakest region. Until the reports say otherwise, Ubigi is a provider to use elsewhere in Asia, not here.

Maya Mobile is the option for a week or more across several countries, and it worked well for 2 of 2 travelers who reported from Macao (100%), too few to judge. Both reports are positive with no failures to describe. Across all countries Maya has the second-best record of the 14 providers in our reports, behind Holafly.

Maya sells one global unlimited plan that covers Macao with 165 other destinations, in 3, 7, 14 and 30-day versions, with a cruise variant; there is no Macao-only plan and nothing shorter than 3 days, so a day trip pays for three. Our comparison tool lists the fair-use rule as 5 GB a day at full speed, then 3 Mbps, with hotspot allowed; in our test that daily reset made it the fairest unlimited plan we tried. Maya's page did not name its Macao network when we checked in September 2026. Installation took one click, but you set the APN ("globaldata") and roaming yourself; the help desk is a WhatsApp bot, then a form, then a person with template replies, as our Maya Mobile review shows. On price it is the cheapest global unlimited plan in our comparison. Maya Mobile fits a Hong Kong, Macao and mainland trip of a week or more, not a few hours in the casinos.

ByteSIM worked well for 2 of 2 travelers who reported from Macao (100%), too few to judge, with no failures to describe. Across our reports ByteSIM does best in East Asia, which fits Macao, but it is a provider for experienced users: in our test the checkout demanded a phone number and a full postal address, the app threw install errors and auto-activation failed, and the WhatsApp help desk did not reply within 15 minutes despite a promise of five.

At export time our comparison tool carried no ByteSIM plan for Macao, so there is no plan table here. ByteSIM's own Macao page is reported to list plans from 300 MB a day up to 50 GB and unlimited, for 1 to 30 days, with unlimited data slowed to 128 kbps after the daily allowance, and it advertises "no passport, no registration" on its China, Hong Kong and Macao product, as of September 2026; we could not open the page to confirm. There are no top-ups, and ByteSIM takes many local wallets, which matters to travelers paying from mainland China. Its fixed prices sit at the market average, cheaper for short 3 to 5 GB trips in Asia and dearer for long validities. Our ByteSIM review has the test details; ByteSIM is a fallback for someone who already knows how to install an eSIM by hand.

Jetpac worked well for 2 of 2 travelers who reported from Macao (100%), too few to judge, and both used it on a combined China, Hong Kong and Macao trip in November and December 2024. One needed two months of data, bought two 30-day packs and found the second started when the first expired; both praised the help desk. One wrote in November 2024: "Recently used in Hong Kong, Macau, China. No issues."

In our comparison tool Jetpac sells Macao plans from 1 GB to 40 GB (4 to 30 days) and unlimited Macao plans of 7 and 10 days listed with 5G, plus China-Macao-Hong Kong-Taiwan unlimited plans from 3 to 30 days and Asia Pacific plans. Two of its China-Taiwan-Hong Kong-Macao unlimited plans are flagged 4G only, so read the plan name before buying. Jetpac's page did not name its Macao network when we checked in September 2026. What sets it apart is the extras: WhatsApp, Maps, Uber and Grab keep working after the data runs out on packs of 3 GB or more, calls come as in-app voice packs, and a flight delay of an hour or more unlocks a free lounge. Our test found a slow site, a rough app with a lagging usage counter and a help desk that took 8 minutes to answer, as our Jetpac review details, and its 3 GB to 20 GB plans are among the more expensive in our comparison. Jetpac suits a frequent flyer doing the Greater China loop.

Global YO worked well for 1 of 1 traveler who reported from Macao (100%), which tells us almost nothing yet. Across our reports it is below average, with its weakest results in East Asia, so one good report from Macao is a start, not a record. We could not confirm which network it uses in Macao; neither its page nor our comparison tool names one.

In our comparison tool Global YO sells Macao plans from 1 GB (3 days) to 100 GB (60 days), with 15, 30 and 45-day options in between, tethering allowed and top-ups possible, plus Asia Explorer and Global Explorer regional plans and 1 GB-a-day Day Plans. It sells no unlimited plan. On price it is the second cheapest provider in our comparison after eSIM4Travel, and it gets cheaper as plans grow, so it fits a long stay with heavy use. The catch is the process: you can only buy in the app, the app dies when data runs out, and the help desk sent a template after 10 minutes and took more than half an hour to follow up in our test, as our Global YO review shows. Global YO suits a price-driven buyer who installs at home and will not need help.

Saily is the travel eSIM from the company behind NordVPN, with plans for about 200 destinations. It has the smoothest install we have tested, a polished app and a built-in VPN. But prices run above the market in most big European destinations, and traveler reports sit below average.

Saily eSIM in our hands

Saily testing outdoor Saily testing speed 1 Saily testing speed 2 Saily testing support

Saily is the easiest first eSIM, and it worked well for 1 of 1 traveler who reported from Macao (100%), too few to judge. In our test it had the smoothest installation (in the app, no QR code) and, with eSIM4Travel, the best help desk: a bot, then a fast and polite person. Its weak point is price, which is why it is not a top pick: it is among the most expensive providers in the destinations people travel to most.

Saily's Macao page does not name a network and still lists 3G among its speeds, even though Macao switched 3G off in June 2025 [12] [7]. The same page sets no hotspot limit, gives 180 days to activate, and sells an optional US phone number for calls and texts after an identity check [12]. In our comparison tool Saily sells Macao plans of 1 GB (7 days) and 3 to 20 GB (30 days), plus an Asia and Oceania regional plan up to 100 GB; there is no unlimited plan for Macao in our tool. One warning for a combined trip: the app may be blocked in mainland China, so set up every plan before you cross. Our Saily review has the test. Saily suits a first-time eSIM buyer who values the app over the price.

Airalo eSIM in our hands

Airalo testing outdoor Airalo testing speed 1 Airalo testing speed 2 Airalo testing support

Airalo is not a pick for Macao because of its network, not its app: it worked well for 1 of 2 travelers who reported from Macao (50%), too few to judge, and the reports give no detail on the miss. Airalo's own Macao page names Hutchison, the 3 Macau network, as the network its eSIM uses [9]. The regulator's spectrum table shows 3 Macau with no 5G spectrum at all and the thinnest 4G allocation of the three operators [3], so an Airalo eSIM runs on 4G only in a territory where most lines are on 5G. Press reports of a regulator statement in September 2026 say 3 Macau will end all mobile service on 1 Dec 2026, so Airalo will have to move its Macao product to another network; as of September 2026 its page still showed Hutchison. A widely read third-party guide claims Airalo's Macao eSIM runs on CTM with 5G; Airalo's own page says otherwise, so ignore that claim.

In our comparison tool Airalo's Macao Mobile plans run from 1 GB to 50 GB over 3 to 30 days, listed as Hutchison, plus unlimited plans from 3 to 30 days that slow to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day. Its Asialink and Discover regional plans cover Macao too, and Discover+ global plans add calls and texts with a US number. The product itself is easy: purchase in the browser, instant installation, and the help desk reached a person after a queue in our test, as our Airalo review shows. On price it sits at the market average and is never the cheapest. Until Airalo names a new Macao network, Nomad or Holafly on CTM are the safer buy.

GoMoWorld, the travel brand of Irish operator eir, has no traveler reports from Macao yet. Across our reports it is below average, with weak results in the US, Mexico, Japan and China and good ones in Western Europe. In our test it was the fastest provider with no throttling even past 10 GB a day, but the most common cause of "it does not work" is built in: a plan does nothing until you press Start or schedule it in the app.

In our comparison tool GoMoWorld sells four Macao plans: 3.5 GB for 7 days, and 17, 35 and 55 GB for 30 days, listed with 5G and tethering, with no expiry until you activate. There is no unlimited plan and no regional plan covering Macao. GoMoWorld's page did not name its Macao network when we checked in September 2026. The eSIM lives only in the app, one account serves one device, and a person on the help desk is available only in office hours, as our GoMoWorld review explains. Its flat euro prices make it cheap where the allowance is generous and dear where it is not; overall it is below the market average. GoMoWorld suits a heavy user staying a month who remembers to press Start.

Roamless has no traveler reports from Macao yet, though across all countries it has the third-best record of the 14 providers in our reports. It is one global eSIM that you load with credit or 30-day plans, which suits someone hopping between Hong Kong, Macao and the mainland with light use.

In our comparison tool Roamless sells Macao plans from 1 GB to 50 GB for 30 days and no-expiration plans from 500 MB to 200 GB, plus a free trial plan, all listed as CTM and with no throttling claimed; its own page did not name a Macao network when we checked in September 2026, although it names networks for Hong Kong. Credit never expires by Roamless's account, and the app includes VoIP calling with an optional second number. In our test the preselected APN did not work until we picked another, Google Pay failed at checkout, and a trickle of data remained at zero balance, enough to buy more, as our Roamless review describes. On price it is cheap for 1 GB and among the dearest for 10 GB and up. Roamless suits a frequent, light multi-country user.

Yesim eSIM in our hands

Yesim testing outdoor Yesim testing speed 1 Yesim testing speed 2 Yesim testing support

Yesim has no traveler reports from Macao yet, and we could not confirm which network it uses there. Its strength is unlimited data sold by the day; its weakness is the help desk, which took 15 to 60 minutes per reply in our test, among the slowest we tested.

In our comparison tool Yesim sells Macao plans of 500 MB for one day, 1 to 10 GB for 30 days, and unlimited plans for 1, 7, 15 and 30 days flagged as throttled with no limit stated, plus Asia and global bundles and an Unlim Day Pass. One trap from our test: our plan started at purchase, not at first use, so buy close to the trip or use the "activate later" option. The app nags with upsells and surveys, and small refunds come back as Yesim credit, as our Yesim review shows. Its fixed plans are among the more expensive in our comparison; its unlimited plans sit at the market average. Yesim suits an experienced user who wants a flexible unlimited bundle and will not need help.

GigSky eSIM in our hands

GigSky testing outdoor GigSky testing speed 1 GigSky testing speed 2 GigSky testing support

GigSky has no traveler reports from Macao yet, and across all countries it is the most expensive provider in our comparison, with its steepest prices in Asia and Africa. Its page refuses to name a Macao network and says only that it connects to the fastest one available, according to the snippet we saw in September 2026, and its unlimited plans are reported to slow after 2.5 GB a day.

In our comparison tool GigSky sells Macao plans of 1 GB (7 days), 3 GB (15 days), 5 and 10 GB (30 days) and a 1-day unlimited pass, plus Asia Pacific and cruise plans that include Macao. Two things stand out from our test: the app stays partly online after the data runs out, so you can buy another plan without Wi-Fi (only Ubigi matched that), and a person on the help desk answered at once. You must install the app to buy, name your device and set the APN ("gigsky"), and the plan starts on first connection with no way to pause it, as our GigSky review explains. There is a free 100 MB trial in most destinations. GigSky suits a cruise passenger calling at Macao or a one-day visitor who wants a day pass, not a price-driven buyer.

Providers travelers report from Macao that we have not tested

Best eSIM Plans for Macao

How much does each provider charge per GB in Macao? The chart below compares plans of 1 to 10 GB that last 6 to 14 days, the range that fits a long weekend across Macao and Hong Kong. Provider websites show only their own plans, so this side-by-side view is one you would otherwise have to work out yourself. A shorter bar means a lower price per GB.

For Macao the right size is usually small. Most visits last a day or two, and a 1 GB or 3 GB plan covers maps, messaging and photos for that; Nomad, Airalo, eSIM4Travel and Global YO all sell 3-day Macao plans, and Roamless and Yesim start at 500 MB. Unlimited by the day makes sense for a stay of a few days with heavy phone use. If you are unsure, our data-needs article and the data calculator turn your habits into a number. Best eSIM for the Macao Peninsula, Cotai and the Border Crossings

The country pick, Nomad, applies everywhere in Macao: it has no place-level reports, and neither does any other provider. The only report that names a place is a Ubigi failure on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, which is shared with Hong Kong and mainland China and does not count toward any total.

Where you are goingWhat the reports showOur pick
Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (shared with Hong Kong and mainland China)too few reportsCountry pick applies

Macao is too small for distance to matter: the peninsula, Taipa, Cotai and Coloane all sit within a few kilometres of each other, so the question is which network you are on, not where you stand. The reports we read say nothing about the casino floors, the LRT or the ferry terminals. What they do say is that the border crossings are where eSIMs on a regional plan can drop: the Ubigi reviewer whose Asia plan stopped on the bridge from Hong Kong in July 2026 never got it back on the Macao side. If your trip starts in Hong Kong, confirm the eSIM connects on the Macao side at the port before you leave Wi-Fi behind, and keep a second option (eSIM4Travel's China, Hong Kong and Macao plan or Nomad's Greater China plan) in mind. No official coverage map for CTM, China Telecom (Macau) or 3 Macau could be confirmed when we checked in September 2026.

Local SIM Cards and Operator eSIMs in Macao

For nearly every visitor a travel eSIM beats a Macao SIM card for tourists, for two reasons: every local prepaid SIM must be registered with an ID card or passport, and the tourist data cards we found carry fair-use caps of a few gigabytes. A local SIM wins only if you need a Macao phone number or stay for weeks with heavy use, and even then the price list could not be confirmed.

The registration rule is law: Article 24(1) of Law No. 13/2019, the Cyber Security Law, in force since 22 Dec 2019, requires operators to register the real identity of prepaid users, and unregistered prepaid cards were suspended from 20 Apr 2020 [1]. CTM's terms, as we saw them in a search snippet in September 2026, require an original ID card or valid passport and an age of 18 or over. CTM sells an eSIM to visitors with the same ID check; a third-party guide reports that a CTM prepaid eSIM can only be activated after you complete the name registration on arrival, which we could not confirm. CTM's own eSIM FAQ, again seen only as a snippet, warns that a factory reset or a "reset network settings" wipes the installed eSIM and a new one may cost a fee.

Prices are reported only, because CTM's website blocked our checks. Third-party guides from November 2025 and June 2026 list CTM's "Online Everywhere in Macau" tourist data card at MOP 100.00 for 3 days, with speed cut after 2 GB (3-day) or 4 GB (7-day) of use, a 4G+ Social prepaid card at MOP 88.00 to MOP 100.00 with a 180-day validity, and SIMs at roughly MOP 50.00 to MOP 150.00 at the airport, as of September 2026; treat every figure as unconfirmed. We could not find tourist offers or prices for China Telecom (Macau) or 3 Macau, and 3 Macau is reported to end all service on 1 Dec 2026 anyway. Whether tax or fees are added to the list price we could not confirm either.

Where to buy, as reported: CTM shops, convenience stores and petrol stations, and the arrival hall at Macau International Airport, where counters are said to stay open until about 22:00. Most visitors never see the airport, though: the Border Gate, the bridge port and the ferry terminals carry the bulk of arrivals. For a same-day visit from Hong Kong or Zhuhai there is no sensible way to queue for a registered SIM, which is the whole case for buying a travel eSIM before you cross.

Mobile Networks in Macao

CTM is the network to be on in Macao, 3 Macau is the one to avoid, and China Telecom (Macau) sits close to CTM on paper. The regulator, the Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT), licenses three mobile operators: CTM, China Telecom (Macau) and Hutchison Telephone (Macau), which trades as 3 Macau [2]. Only CTM and China Telecom hold 5G licences; CTT counts three 4G operators and two 5G operators as of July 2026 [4]. Its spectrum table, dated 13 Feb 2026, shows 3 Macau with two narrow 4G bands and no 5G spectrum at all, while CTM and China Telecom each hold low-band, mid-band and high-band 5G, with CTM's 4G allocation the widest of the three [3].

That matters because Macao is a 5G market: of 1,443,340 mobile lines in July 2026, 85.4% were 5G, and CTT also counted 635 free FreeWiFi.MO hotspots [5]. 3G ended on 5 Jun 2025 when the licences expired, so there is no fallback below 4G [7]; 2G went years earlier. The market is still shrinking: SmarTone handed back its licence in 2024 and moved its customers to CTM, and press reports of a CTT statement in September 2026 say 3 Macau, bought by CTM in January 2026, will end all mobile service on 1 Dec 2026, leaving two operators. CTT measures 4G and 5G speeds per operator every quarter at districts, border checkpoints and malls [6], but publishes the results as chart images, so we could not read the per-operator figures, and no third-party speed report for Macao turned up.

Who rides which network: Nomad and Holafly name CTM on their Macao pages [11] [10]. Ubigi's plan page names China Telecom (Macau). Airalo names Hutchison, the 3 Macau network with no 5G and a closing date [9]. eSIM4Travel and Roamless are listed as CTM in our comparison tool but do not name a network on their pages; Saily [12], Maya Mobile, GigSky, GoMoWorld, Jetpac and ByteSIM did not name one when we checked in September 2026, and for Yesim and Global YO we could not verify a Macao page at all. A reported claim that China Telecom (Macau) SIMs apply mainland-style filtering could not be confirmed, so we do not repeat it as fact. For a trip, that means: a CTM-based eSIM gets you 5G and the widest 4G; if 5G matters to you, our 4G vs 5G explainer says when it does.

How to Set Up an eSIM for Macao

Install before you travel, because with most providers here the plan starts on first connection, not at installation. The steps:

  1. Check your phone. According to Apple's own help pages, iPhones sold in Hong Kong and Macao have eSIM only on a short list of models, and most locally sold iPhones use two physical SIMs instead; our list of phones with eSIM covers other brands.
  2. Buy and install at home on Wi-Fi. Nomad gives 60 days to activate [11], Saily 180 days [12], eSIM4Travel 90 days and Ubigi 6 months. Two exceptions from our tests: Yesim's plan started at purchase, and GoMoWorld does nothing until you press Start in the app.
  3. Add the eSIM. Saily, GoMoWorld, Roamless and GigSky install from their apps; the rest send a QR code by email. Our iPhone instructions and our Samsung instructions show every tap.
  4. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line and set the APN where the provider asks for one: "globaldata" for Maya Mobile and Global YO, "gigsky" for GigSky, "mobiledata" for Ubigi.
  5. On arrival, make sure the phone is on 4G or 5G; there is no 3G in Macao [7]. If data drops, switch the physical SIM line off (that fixed it for Jetpac in our test) and toggle airplane mode.
  6. Still nothing? Our troubleshooting article walks through the usual causes before you contact the help desk.

Calls and SMS in Macao

Macao's calling code is +853, and none of the Macao plans in our comparison tool includes minutes or SMS, so calls go over WhatsApp or a similar app. A few providers add calling another way: Airalo's Discover+ global plans, which cover Macao, include calls and texts through a US number; Jetpac sells in-app voice packs, which showed a US number to the person called in our test; Roamless and Global YO include app-based outgoing calls, and Roamless sells a second number; Saily sells an optional US number after an identity check [12]; a Holafly subscription adds a number that receives SMS only.

The only way to get a Macao number is a local SIM or operator eSIM, which means passport registration under Law 13/2019 [1]. For a visit of a day or two that is rarely worth it; for a long stay with local calls, the local SIM section above has what we could and could not confirm.

Free eSIM Data for Macao

Two providers in this article give away data that works in Macao. Nomad's Macao page lists a free 1 GB trial for new users [11], enough to test the eSIM at the port before paying. Roamless lists a free Macao trial plan in our comparison tool, on top of the small free credit every new account gets. GigSky's 100 MB trial, GoMoWorld's free first day and Jetpac's free 100 MB eSIM exist in most destinations, but we could not confirm them for Macao. Our free eSIM article keeps the full list.

Frequently Asked Questions About eSIMs in Macao

Which eSIM works best in Macao?
Nomad had the best record in traveler reports from Macao: it worked well for 5 of 6 travelers, with one miss the reports do not explain, and its Macao page names CTM, the network with the most spectrum. Holafly worked for 3 of 4 and also uses CTM, but in our test its speed was capped from the start. Ubigi failed in all 6 of its reports. Compare current prices with (eSIM Comparison).
How much data do I need for Macao?
Less than you think: most visits to Macao last a day or two. Maps, messaging and photos for a weekend fit the smallest plans in our comparison tool, 1 GB from most providers and 500 MB from Roamless and Yesim, while a few days of streaming and video calls point to a 5 GB plan or unlimited by the day. For a number based on your own habits, use (Travel Data Calculator).
What is the cheapest eSIM for Macao?
eSIM4Travel is the cheapest in our comparison tool for Macao by a wide margin for 2 GB to 10 GB plans, and it is the cheapest provider we compare across all countries; Global YO is the next cheapest and gets cheaper as plans grow. Both are data only and both have slow or missing help desks, which is the trade-off. Live prices per tier are in (eSIM Comparison).
Does my Hong Kong eSIM work in Macao?
Only if Macao is on the plan's region list, and even then not always. Ubigi's Asia plans include Macao, yet every one of its 6 reports from Macao failed while the same eSIM worked in Hong Kong, one of them stopping on the bridge. Jetpac's two reports and Simify's one covered Hong Kong, Macao and mainland China without trouble. Check the region list, then test the eSIM at the port before leaving Wi-Fi.
Does Airalo work in Macao?
It worked for 1 of 2 travelers who reported from Macao, too few to judge, and its network is the problem. Airalo's own page names Hutchison (3 Macau), the one operator with no 5G spectrum, and 3 Macau is reported to end service on 1 Dec 2026, so Airalo has to move to another network. Until it does, Nomad or Holafly on CTM is the safer buy.
Do I need a passport to buy a Macao SIM card for tourists?
Yes. Macao's Cyber Security Law, Law 13/2019, requires real-name registration of every prepaid SIM, and CTM's terms ask for an original ID card or passport and an age of 18 or over. A travel eSIM needs no registration, which is why it beats a local SIM for the short visits most people make. Tourist data cards we found are also reported to slow after 2 GB to 4 GB.
Can I use an eSIM on an iPhone bought in Macao or Hong Kong?
Often not. According to Apple's own help pages, iPhones sold in Hong Kong and Macao have eSIM only on a short list of models, and the rest take two physical SIMs; mainland China models have even fewer. Check your model in Settings before buying any plan, and see (Phones with eSIM support | Updated for 2026).

Summary: the best eSIM for Macao

Based on 26 traveler reports and our tests, we recommend Nomad for most trips to Macao: it worked well for 5 of 6 travelers, its page names CTM, and it sells 3-day and 7-day plans that match a short visit; its weakness is a help desk we could not reach. Holafly worked well for 3 of 4 travelers and suits anyone who wants unlimited data without thinking about it, but in our test its speed was capped from the start, its hotspot stops at 1 GB a day and there are no top-ups. eSIM4Travel is by far the cheapest for Macao in our comparison tool and had the best help desk we tested, with no app and no traveler reports from Macao yet.

Two warnings decide the rest. Ubigi failed in all 6 of its reports from Macao, and Airalo runs on 3 Macau, the operator with no 5G that is reported to close on 1 Dec 2026. Macao has no 3G, every local SIM needs a registered passport, and most visits last a day, so a small plan on CTM, installed before you cross, is the best eSIM for Macao in 2026.
