Introduction

Yesim eSIM is a Swiss provider of data eSIMs for travel with coverage in 135 countries worldwide. If you're looking for a way to stay online during international trips without high roaming charges, a virtual SIM card from Yesim might be an interesting option.

In this review, we'll focus on practical experiences with Yesim eSIM - from purchase through installation to actual use. You'll discover the strengths and weaknesses of this provider and whether Yesim is the right choice for your next trip.

For a quick comparison of all available eSIMs for your destination, we recommend using our eSIM comparison tool, where you can filter by desired data size, validity, and country - even multiple countries at once.

eSIM offering at a glance

Yesim offers local eSIMs in more than 130 destinations, which can also be combined into 11 different regional or global packages. Prices, validity periods (usually 7 to 30 days), and data volumes (mostly between 3 and 20 GB) vary by destination.

In addition to fixed data volume packages, Yesim also offers unlimited data packages in many destinations, including all popular tourist spots around the world. However, these unlimited packages are more expensive and are worthwhile primarily for streaming high-definition videos or downloading larger files.

To compare the best eSIM offers for your destination, use our eSIM comparison tool, which will help you find the optimal solution based on your requirements.

Purchase process

Vefru Rating: 6/10

The Yesim website appears very simple and straightforward at first glance. It offers several payment options including Google Pay, which should theoretically speed up the purchase. Sign-in via Apple and Google accounts is also available.

In practice, however, we encountered several issues:

  • After selecting Google Pay payment, the website prompts you to log in
  • After logging in, you find yourself back on the homepage and have to search for the desired package again
  • This process creates uncertainty about whether the payment has been processed or not

Interestingly, after logging in, the cheapest package (0.5 GB) that was visible before login disappeared. When we inquired with customer support, after a long wait we were told it was a "promotional price," although there was no information about this on the website.

On the positive side, email login is very straightforward - you enter your email, immediately receive a confirmation code, and can continue with your purchase. After successful payment completion, you immediately receive an email with your eSIM.

If you want to compare the purchasing process across different providers, we recommend trying our eSIM comparison tool, which allows you to find the best solution for your needs.

App

Vefru Rating: 7/10

The Yesim app has a rating of 4.4 stars (from 600 reviews) on the App Store and 3.6 stars (from 2,000 reviews) on Google Play, suggesting a better experience on iOS devices.

Our experiences with the app:

  • After installation, the app immediately requests notification permissions, with the option to decline inconspicuously placed in the top right corner
  • This is followed by another screen asking "How did you hear about us?", which can again only be skipped via small "Skip" text at the top
  • The third screen contains a "quick tutorial," which is more focused on upselling and explaining how to upgrade or buy more eSIMs

Overall, the app is functional and user-friendly, but somewhat aggressive in attempts to gain consent for notifications and marketing communications. It's also problematic that the app doesn't work without an internet connection and doesn't have "zero-rating," meaning that after using up your data, you can't use the app to purchase more data without Wi-Fi.

An interesting finding was that the data remaining information in the app may not always be accurate. After using 506 MB of a 500 MB package, the app still showed that we had 20 MB of data available. It's therefore better to monitor data usage directly in your phone's settings.

eSIM installation

Vefru Rating: 8/10

Installing Yesim eSIM is relatively straightforward and doesn't require any special steps:

  • After purchase, you immediately receive an email with your eSIM
  • On the website or in the app, you'll find your purchased eSIM with installation options
  • Installation proceeds via the standard QR code or manual code entry

Important note: The plan is active immediately after purchase, so we recommend buying your eSIM as close as possible to your travel date so you don't lose days of validity.

For trouble-free installation on specific devices, check out our guides on how to add an eSIM to iPhone or how to add an eSIM to Samsung. If you're not sure whether your phone supports eSIM technology, check our list of phones with eSIM support.

Customer support

Vefru Rating: 2/10

Customer support is undoubtedly the weakest link in Yesim's services. Our experiences were very negative:

  • Chat support states they respond within an hour, which is already too long a timeframe
  • After contacting them, we first had to wait for a bot with pre-selected answers
  • An agent responded after 15 minutes and only sent a pre-prepared answer that had nothing to do with our query
  • They requested personal information including ID, emails, and payment card numbers, even though it was a simple question about package availability
  • We waited over 20 minutes for the next answer, spending more than 45 minutes in total in the conversation without useful help

Compared to competitors like eSIM4Travel, Airalo, or Holafly, Yesim's support is significantly worse. It's not a real-time chat but more like a ticket system with very long response times.

It's also problematic that when logging into the Yesim website, it automatically pre-sets consent to marketing emails in fine print, which is against GDPR rules applicable in the EU. Even though Yesim is a Swiss company, it should respect the rules in countries where it operates.

Connection speed test

Vefru Rating: 8/10

In terms of connection speed, Yesim eSIM performs very well. Our tests showed:

  • Download speed: 135 Mbps
  • Upload speed: 90 Mbps

These values are above average and fully sufficient for normal use, high-definition video streaming, and video calls. Yesim uses local mobile operators, so connection quality depends primarily on coverage in the given location.

An interesting finding was that the connection was cut off exactly after using 506 MB of a 500 MB package. Yesim therefore doesn't provide any extra buffer and even disconnects the internet in the middle of an active session once you reach the limit. It's important to keep this in mind and ensure timely data top-ups.

For a better idea of how much data you'll need on your trip, we recommend our guides on what 2 GB of data is enough for or what 5 GB of data is enough for. If you're interested in technical differences in mobile networks, check out our articles on 4G vs. LTE or 4G vs. 5G.

Prices

Vefru Rating: 6/10

Yesim's pricing policy is fairly competitive, but with a few caveats:

  • The smallest tested package of 0.5 GB was cost-effective, but "mysteriously" disappeared after logging into the account
  • The next available package of 3 GB for 11 EUR represents a big price jump
  • There's a lack of a medium option around 1 GB, which could be suitable for shorter trips

Yesim offers competitive prices per GB for medium and large packages. According to our research, prices are often comparable to Airalo - sometimes slightly cheaper, sometimes slightly more expensive. For unlimited packages, however, Holafly is usually more advantageous.

Yesim also offers so-called "Ycoins," which is the app's internal currency. You get 5 EUR in Ycoins with your first top-up, 5 EUR for referring other users, and 10 EUR for using a referral code. This can bring interesting savings, especially on your first purchase.

To find the best price, we always recommend comparing offers from different providers using our eSIM comparison tool, which will help you find the cheapest option for your destination.

Customer feedback

Vefru Rating: 8.6/10

Customer ratings for Yesim are quite positive, which contrasts with some of our experiences:

  • Trustpilot: 4.2 out of 5 (approximately 150 ratings)
  • Google Play Store: 3.6 out of 5 (approximately 2,000 ratings)
  • App Store: 4.4 out of 5 (approximately 600 ratings)

Positive reviews often mention good prices and a functional app. Negative comments focus primarily on issues with customer support and unsolicited marketing emails and notifications.

Our experience with customer support was significantly worse than the average rating suggests. It's possible that customer support works better for certain types of problems or during certain time periods.

Overall, it seems that Yesim is popular among more experienced eSIM users who don't need intensive support and can handle potential problems on their own. For beginners, alternatives with better customer support may be more suitable.

Result

Overall Vefru Rating: 6.5/10

Yesim eSIM offers a solid solution for travelers who need mobile data abroad, but it has its strengths and weaknesses.

The main advantages include:

  • Competitive prices per GB of data for medium and large packages
  • Offering both fixed and unlimited data packages
  • Coverage in 135 countries including all major tourist destinations
  • Excellent connection speed (135 Mbps download, 90 Mbps upload)
  • Support for hotspot and data sharing

On the other hand, Yesim has several significant disadvantages:

  • Extremely slow and inefficient customer support
  • Purchasing process with occasional problems and "disappearing" packages
  • Aggressive marketing and unsolicited notifications
  • Inaccurate display of remaining data in the app
  • Inability to purchase additional data after using up your package without Wi-Fi access

We recommend Yesim primarily to experienced eSIM users who can solve potential problems on their own and don't need significant support. It's a good choice if you're looking for competitive prices and don't need premium customer care.

For beginners or users who expect quick and efficient support, we recommend considering alternatives such as Airalo, Holafly, or eSIM4Travel.

To find the best eSIM for your specific needs, we recommend using our eSIM comparison tool on vefru.com, which allows you to filter offers by desired data size, validity, and destination - even for multiple countries at once.

Frequently Asked Questions about Yesim

Is Yesim eSIM reliable for travel?
Yes, Yesim is a reliable eSIM provider with coverage in 135 countries. Our testing showed excellent connection speeds (135 Mbps download, 90 Mbps upload). The main advantages are competitive prices and both fixed and unlimited package offerings. However, the major drawback is very slow customer support, making Yesim more suitable for experienced users.
How does the Yesim eSIM purchase process work?
The Yesim purchase process has its pros and cons. The website is simple and straightforward, with Google Pay payment options and Apple or Google account login. The problem is that after logging in, you're redirected back to the homepage and need to search for your package again. On the positive side, email login is quick using a confirmation code, and your eSIM is delivered immediately after purchase.
What's the quality of Yesim's customer support?
Customer support is the weakest aspect of Yesim's services. The response time is stated as up to 1 hour, but we often waited longer. Responses are mostly automated and frequently unrelated to the question asked. Compared to competitors like Airalo, Holafly, or eSIM4Travel, Yesim's support is significantly worse and isn't a real-time chat but more like a ticket system with very long response times.
How fast is the connection through Yesim eSIM?
Connection through Yesim eSIM is very fast. Our tests showed download speeds of 135 Mbps and upload speeds of 90 Mbps, which is above average. These values are fully sufficient for normal use, high-definition video streaming, and video calls. Connection quality depends on the coverage of local operators that Yesim uses.
What happens when I use up all my data?
Yesim disconnects your connection exactly when you reach your data limit - in our test, the connection was cut off after using 506 MB of a 500 MB package. Problematically, the Yesim app doesn't work without an internet connection and doesn't have 'zero-rating', so you need Wi-Fi to purchase more data. Additionally, the remaining data information in the app may not be accurate - even after disconnection, our app showed we still had 20 MB available.
How do Yesim's prices compare to competitors?
Yesim offers competitive prices per GB for medium and large packages, often comparable to Airalo. The issue is the lack of a medium option around 1 GB and the big price jump between the smallest package (0.5 GB) and the next one (3 GB for 11 EUR). An interesting savings option is 'Ycoins' - the app's internal currency that can give you up to a 10 EUR discount on your first purchase.
Is the Yesim app user-friendly?
The Yesim app is functional and user-friendly, but has several problematic aspects. It aggressively requests notification and marketing permissions, with the decline option inconspicuously placed. The tutorial is more focused on upselling than helping users. The app rating is better on iOS (4.4/5) than on Android (3.6/5). Inaccurate display of remaining data is another disadvantage.
Who is Yesim best suited for?
Yesim is ideal for experienced eSIM users who can solve potential problems themselves and don't need significant customer support. It's a good choice if you're looking for competitive prices per GB of data and don't need premium customer service. For beginners or users expecting quick support, we recommend considering alternatives like Airalo, Holafly, or eSIM4Travel.
