Key takeaways
Based on 14 traveler reports from Uruguay and our tests, the best option is Maya Mobile: it worked well for 5 of 5 travelers who reported from Uruguay (limited evidence), and its global unlimited plan is the cheapest of its kind, but it has no Uruguay-only plan and nothing under 3 days. eSIM4Travel is the cheapest provider in our comparison and has a human help desk, but no traveler has reported from Uruguay yet and it has no app. The other 12 providers have two reports or fewer each, so none of them meets our 3-report minimum for a pick.

The best eSIM for Uruguay is a closer call than in most countries, because travelers have left only 14 public reports from here and just one provider has more than two of them. Coverage itself is rarely the problem. According to URSEC figures reported by Montevideo Portal, 4G (LTE) covered 93.1% of the territory in 2022, and the weakest departments were lightly populated inland ones: Durazno, Tacuarembó, Artigas and Cerro Largo.
Three operators run the networks: state-owned Antel, Claro and Tigo. Tigo is the former Movistar. Millicom completed its purchase of that business in October 2025 [5], and press reports date the new brand to April 2026, so provider pages may still say Movistar. We use both names. Which network your eSIM rides matters here, and the networks section shows who uses which.
According to press reports of Tourism Ministry figures, most visitors arrive from Argentina, with a peak in the southern summer. Many cross by ferry or road, so installing your eSIM before you leave saves a search for Wi-Fi at the border. A local prepaid SIM is also cheap in Uruguay, and the local SIM section shows when it beats a travel eSIM. Below, we rank providers by traveler reports first, price second and our hands-on tests third.

How well each provider's eSIM works in Uruguay
The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in Uruguay. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

How we got these numbers: we read 14 public customer reviews that mention Uruguay or a place in it, published between January 2025 and November 2025, and counted a report as "worked" when the reviewer said the eSIM connected, even with small hiccups. We treat 20 or more reports as strong evidence, 3 to 19 as limited, and fewer than 3 as too few to judge. A count like 5 of 5 means the eSIM worked well for all 5 travelers who reported from here; each provider section says what went wrong for the rest. The Vefru test score is a separate number: our own hands-on test of the provider, run outside Uruguay, so it says how the provider behaves, not how the network performs here. Local operator prices in the text were checked on 26 September 2026; provider ratings, the plan tables and the price-per-GB chart are live and update on their own.
| Provider | Vefru test score | Worked in Uruguay (reports) | Best for | Network in Uruguay | Speed cap |

We chose the Best group by traveler reports first, price second and our hands-on tests third. Only Maya Mobile has 3 or more reports from Uruguay. We keep eSIM4Travel in the group as well, because it has the highest Vefru test score of the 14 providers and usually the lowest price, and a missing record here says how few travelers bought it, not that it fails. No other provider reaches 3 reports, so none is recommended as a pick.

Maya Mobile eSIM in our hands
Maya Mobile has the strongest Uruguay record of the 14 providers: its eSIM worked well for 5 of 5 travelers who reported from here, and none of the five describes a miss. Five reports is limited evidence (3 to 19), so we read it as a good sign, not proof. Two of the reports name a place: one from Montevideo and one from Colonia del Sacramento, a ferry crossing point from Argentina. The other three name none.
With no misses to analyze, the risks come from our test and the plan design. Maya's Uruguay page names no network and says only that it connects to the strongest local one [20]. In our test in Czechia, setup needed a manual APN (a data setting, here called globaldata) and data roaming switched on. Its help desk, a WhatsApp bot that hands you to a person after about 9 minutes, was slower than the best we tested. It also sells unlimited plans only, with a 3-day minimum, so a 1 GB weekend is not what it is built for.
Maya sells no Uruguay-only plan. It sells one global unlimited eSIM for 165 or more countries, in 3, 7, 14 and 30-day versions with cruise variants, hotspot allowed and top-ups possible, as stated by Maya [20]. Full speed runs up to 5 GB a day and then slows. In our test it was the fairest unlimited plan we tried, with no sign of throttling before the daily allowance. It is the cheapest global unlimited plan we compare, well below the 30-day single-country unlimited plans of the others, which suits a week or more of heavy use or a trip that continues to other countries. For two days in Montevideo, a small fixed plan from another provider costs less. See Maya Mobile's plans and read our hands-on Maya Mobile review for the full test.

eSIM4Travel eSIM in our hands
eSIM4Travel is the cheapest provider in our comparison and had the best help desk we tested, which keeps it in the Best group even though no traveler has reported from Uruguay yet. We cannot say it worked here. What we can say comes from our test in Switzerland: the eSIM installed from a QR code and connected at once, and one click took us from the bot to a person who solved the problem.
There are no misses to report, so the drawbacks come from the product. It has no app, so once the data runs out you need Wi-Fi to buy more. It does not take Google Pay, it is data only, and its unlimited plans slow down at a limit it does not state. Our comparison tool lists its Uruguay network as Movistar (now Tigo). According to Opensignal, Tigo leads on reliability and time on 4G/5G, while Antel is faster on raw download.
Uruguay plans run from small day passes to 20 GB over 30 days, with unlimited for 3, 5 or 7 days. Its 2 GB to 10 GB plans here sit below the median of the other providers in our comparison tool, and its edge shrinks above 50 GB. It suits a few days to a month with light to medium data, where a low price and a person on the help desk matter more than an app. It does not suit anyone who needs calls or more than 20 GB. Compare eSIM4Travel's Uruguay plans, and see our eSIM4Travel review for the test.

Other eSIM Providers for Uruguay
These 12 providers all went through our hands-on tests, but none has the 3 reports from Uruguay that a pick needs. Yesim eSIM in our hands
Yesim worked well for both travelers who reported from Uruguay (2 of 2), but two reports are too few to judge, and its help desk was among the slowest we tested. Neither report describes a miss, and neither names a city.
Yesim sells a Uruguay plan in several forms: a 200 MB day pass, fixed plans of 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 GB for 30 days, and unlimited plans for 1, 7, 15 and 30 days. The unlimited plans are throttled by the partner network at a limit Yesim does not publish, and its page says hotspot depends on the operator [22]. The page names no network for Uruguay and describes automatic switching between networks [22]. Its page says to activate within 180 days [22], but our test plan started at purchase, so buying close to the trip is safer. Replies took 15 to 60 minutes each in our test. Unlimited plans sit at the market price, and fixed country plans are among the dearest. It suits experienced users who want unlimited data by the day. See our Yesim review or Yesim's Uruguay page.

GigSky eSIM in our hands
GigSky worked well for both travelers who reported from Uruguay (2 of 2), one of them in Colonia del Sacramento, but two reports are too few to judge. It is a cruise and short-stay specialist, and it is the dearest provider overall in our price comparison, which keeps it out of the top group. Neither report describes a miss.
GigSky sells Uruguay-only plans of 1 GB (7 days), 3 GB (15 days), 5 GB and 10 GB (30 days), plus a 1-day unlimited pass, and also Latin America and cruise plans. Its page says the eSIM connects automatically to the fastest network and names none [24]. In our test the help desk put us in touch with a person at once, and the app stays partly online after the data runs out, so you can buy a new plan without Wi-Fi. Only Ubigi matched that. The downsides: you must install the app to buy, Google Pay is not accepted, and speeds felt unstable. Its cruise plans often worked only near port in our test, which matters because cruise ships call at Montevideo and Punta del Este. GigSky is priced far above the market in about 50 countries and at the market in big European ones. We cannot place Uruguay in our price grid. Read our GigSky review, or see GigSky's Uruguay page.

Nomad eSIM in our hands
Nomad worked well for the one traveler who reported from Uruguay (1 of 1), which is too few to judge. It suits experienced users who will not need the help desk: in our test the bot looped on a question and offered no route to a person. The report names no place and no problem.
Nomad sells Uruguay plans of 1 GB (7 days) and 3, 5, 10 and 20 GB (30 days), and no unlimited plan for Uruguay appears in our comparison tool. Its Uruguay page names Movistar, now Tigo, as the network and says to activate within 60 days, with hotspot allowed [16]. The app has a home-screen widget that shows the data left, which no other provider we tested has. Prices sit just below the market at every size, which makes it a flat, predictable choice rather than a cheap one. Read our Nomad review, or see Nomad directly.

Holafly eSIM in our hands
Holafly's one Uruguay report is positive (1 of 1), which is too few to judge, and in our test its speed was capped from the start, before any data was used. That is enough for maps, messaging, browsing and streaming, and slow for large downloads, uploads, cloud backups and laptop work. It suits travelers who want unlimited data and do not want to think about it. The hotspot is limited to 1 GB a day, and there are no top-ups: when the plan ends you buy a new eSIM [13]. The report names no place and no problem.
Across all destinations, Holafly has the best traveler-report record of the 14 providers, but a report counts as "worked" when the eSIM connected, so it says nothing about speed. Holafly's own Uruguay page lists unlimited plans from 1 to 90 days on three networks, Movistar, Claro and Antel [13]. Our comparison tool listed no Holafly plan for Uruguay when we exported plans for this page, so there is no plan table here, and the live prices are on Holafly's page. Unused eSIMs can be refunded within 6 months [13]. Holafly is dearer than other unlimited sellers, and the eSIM cannot be reinstalled once deleted. Read our Holafly review, or see Holafly's Uruguay page.

Jetpac eSIM in our hands
Jetpac's one Uruguay report is positive (1 of 1), which is too few to judge. A traveler from Argentina who used it in December 2024 wrote that it "was way more cheaper than the others in the country that I visited (Uruguay)" (22 Jan 2025). The report names no city and no problem. Jetpac suits frequent flyers who want a larger pack, in-app voice calls and extras, but its app was the roughest we tested and its help desk only average.
Jetpac sells Uruguay-only packs of 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 GB, valid for 4, 7 or 30 days, and no unlimited plan for Uruguay appears in our comparison tool. We could not verify which network it uses. Packs of 3 GB or more keep WhatsApp, Google Maps and Uber working after the data runs out, and voice calls are sold in the app. Today it is dearer than the market for 3 to 20 GB, and the 20 GB pack often costs more than the 30 GB one, so the traveler's price comparison from 2024 may no longer hold. Read our Jetpac review, or see Jetpac.

ByteSIM eSIM in our hands
ByteSIM's one Uruguay report is a miss (0 of 1), and one report is too few to tell what went wrong. That stands out because ByteSIM's own page names Antel as its primary network [15], the network with the fastest results in independent tests, so the network choice alone does not explain the failure. Its help desk was also the weakest we tested: no WhatsApp reply in 15 minutes.
ByteSIM has the largest Uruguay catalog we see: daily plans from 500 MB a day, fixed plans from 3 GB, and unlimited plans, all valid 1 to 30 days, with longer validity costing more. Its page also lists voice bundles with minutes and SMS [15]. Daily and total plans slow to a very low speed at the limit, and the unlimited plans are throttled at a limit it does not state. Unused or never-connected eSIMs can be refunded within 180 days [15]. The checkout and app were clumsy in our test. Prices sit near the market, and ByteSIM is dear in Latin America. It suits experienced users who want a voice bundle or a local payment method. Read our ByteSIM review, or see ByteSIM.

Saily eSIM in our hands
Saily's one Uruguay report is a miss (0 of 1), and one report is too few to tell what went wrong or where. Saily had the most polished app, install and help desk of the providers we tested, so one failed report is not a pattern. It suits first-time users who value an easy setup over a low price.
Our comparison tool lists Saily plans for Uruguay of 1, 3 and 5 GB, and Latin America plans that include it. Saily's own page also lists larger fixed plans and an unlimited plan, as of September 2026 [21]. The page names no network, says plans start automatically on arrival and allows a 180-day window before activation [21]. Hotspot is unrestricted, and an optional US number with calls and SMS is sold on top [21]. Price is the drawback: Saily is among the two dearest providers in 14 of the 24 destinations in our price grid, and never the cheapest. We cannot place Uruguay in that grid. Global YO eSIM in our hands
No traveler has reported from Uruguay for Global YO yet, so we cannot say it worked here. It is the second cheapest provider in our price comparison and its own page names Claro as the Uruguay network [18]. It suits price-driven travelers who install the eSIM at home and do not expect to need the help desk, which was slow in our test.
Global YO has the widest ladder of Uruguay-only plans in this group: 1 GB for 3 days, 3 and 5 GB for 15 days, 10 and 20 GB for 30 days, 50 GB for 45 days and 100 GB for 60 days. It sells no unlimited plan. The plans are 4G/LTE only and allow hotspot, and no ID is needed [18]. Prices fall per GB as the plan grows, which makes it strong for long stays and heavy use. Buying is app-only, an eSIM can be activated once, and if data does not connect, the page says to set the APN (a data setting) to globaldata [18]. Read our Global YO review, or see Global YO's Uruguay page.

No traveler has reported from Uruguay for GoMoWorld yet. It was the fastest provider in our test, with no throttling, and its Uruguay plans give large data allowances, so it suits heavy users who set it up in the app. Its help desk is staffed by people only in office hours.
GoMoWorld sells Uruguay plans of 4 GB for 7 days and 20, 40 and 60 GB for 30 days. It has no unlimited plan. Its page names no network, only "major Uruguayan networks" [23]. The eSIM comes only through the app, one account works on one device, and you must press Start (or schedule a start) or the plan never begins, which is the common reason travelers think it is not working. Value is best from 5 GB up and poor for a 1 GB trip. Read our GoMoWorld review, or see GoMoWorld.

Ubigi is the travel eSIM brand of Paris operator Transatel, with one reusable eSIM for 200+ destinations. Data was fast in our test, and its 3 GB, 10 GB and 30-day unlimited plans are cheap. Its weak point is support: a chatbot that ends in an email ticket, with no live agent.

Ubigi eSIM in our hands
No traveler has reported from Uruguay for Ubigi yet. Its own page names Antel and Tigo as its Uruguay networks [14], and it was among the fastest in our test, but its site, app and help desk were the weakest we tested: an email ticket went unanswered for more than 24 hours. It suits tech-savvy travelers who will not need help.
Ubigi sells Uruguay plans of 1 GB (7 days), 3 GB (15 days), 10 GB (7 or 30 days) and 25 GB (30 days), plus unlimited plans for 7 and 30 days with no throttling flagged. It has no 5 GB or 20 GB plan, so those needs push you to the next size. Prices for 3 GB and 10 GB are below the market, and its 30-day unlimited is among the cheapest. In our test it was one of two providers that let us buy more data at a zero balance. An unscanned QR code expires after 6 months [14]. Read our Ubigi review, or see Ubigi.

Roamless is a US provider built around one global eSIM for 203 destinations, paid with pay-as-you-go credit. It was fast and unthrottled in our test, and travelers report it working in 91% of cases. Its weak point is buying: the website forces you into the app, and large data amounts cost more than most rivals.

Roamless eSIM in our hands
No traveler has reported from Uruguay for Roamless yet. Its own page names Tigo/Movistar as the network [17], and across all destinations it has the third-best traveler-report record of the 14 providers. It suits frequent multi-country travelers with light needs who like credit that never expires.
Roamless sells Uruguay-only 30-day plans from 1 GB to 50 GB, a free 400 MB trial, and pay-as-you-go credit that does not expire [17]. It has no unlimited plan, hotspot is unlimited, and a second number with calls and SMS is optional [17]. It is among the cheapest for 1 GB and dear for 10 GB and up. In our test the purchase was clumsy, the eSIM is delivered only in the app, and the preselected network profile did not connect until we picked another one. Read our Roamless review, or see Roamless's Uruguay page.

Airalo is an eSIM marketplace from Singapore with plans for 200+ destinations, some with calls and texts. It is easy to buy and install. But prices sit at the market median, and travelers report more failed connections than with any other provider we track.

Airalo eSIM in our hands
No traveler has reported from Uruguay for Airalo yet, so we cannot say it worked here. Airalo is the biggest name and easy to buy and install, but across all destinations it had the lowest traveler-report record of the 14 providers, and its prices sit at the market, never below it. It suits beginners and anyone who wants calls or texts, since it sells the most plans with voice.
Its Uruguay plans are called Ballena!: 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 GB, valid 3 to 30 days, plus unlimited plans for 3 to 30 days that slow down after 3 GB a day. Top-ups are available. Airalo's product pages name Claro as the network [19]. Our comparison tool lists Entel, which is not a Uruguayan operator, so we treat Claro as the network. Global Discover+ plans with a US number also cover Uruguay. Read our Airalo review, or see Airalo's Uruguay page.

Best eSIM Plans for Uruguay
Price per GB in Uruguay by eSIM Provider
How much does each provider charge per GB in Uruguay? The chart below compares plans of 1 to 10 GB that last 6 to 14 days, the usual range for a one- or two-week trip. Provider websites show only their own plans, so this side-by-side view is one you would otherwise have to calculate yourself. A shorter bar means a lower price per GB.

Most providers sell Uruguay-only plans, and ten also sell Latin America plans that cover Uruguay together with Argentina and Brazil: Airalo, eSIM4Travel, GigSky, Global YO, GoMoWorld, Jetpac, Nomad, Saily, Ubigi and Yesim. Unlimited Uruguay plans come from Airalo, ByteSIM, eSIM4Travel, GigSky (1-day passes), Ubigi and Yesim, and from Holafly on its own page. Maya Mobile's global unlimited plan also covers the country. Except for Ubigi's and GigSky's plans, the unlimited plans in our comparison tool are flagged as throttled. For a trip that continues to another country, compare Uruguay and Peru plans together.

Best eSIM for Montevideo, Colonia del Sacramento and the Interior
No place in Uruguay has the 3 reports we need for a city pick, so the country pick applies everywhere. Our overall pick, Maya Mobile, has one report in Montevideo and one in Colonia del Sacramento, both positive, and GigSky has one more positive report in Colonia del Sacramento. That is the whole city record.
| Where you are going | What the reports show | Our pick |
|---|---|---|
| Montevideo | too few reports (Maya Mobile 1/1) | Country pick applies |
| Colonia del Sacramento | too few reports (Maya Mobile 1/1, GigSky 1/1) | Country pick applies |
Montevideo is the easy case for any provider. According to URSEC data reported by Montevideo Portal, LTE covered 100% of Montevideo in 2022, so the capital needs no special network choice. The reports from Montevideo and Colonia del Sacramento are too thin to rank providers, and none mentions an airport or a ferry terminal.
The interior is where the network matters, and there are no traveler reports from it. The same URSEC data put the lowest LTE coverage in 2022 in Durazno, Tacuarembó, Artigas and Cerro Largo, all lightly populated. One travel-eSIM provider's page, not one we compare, flags Cabo Polonio, an off-grid village, and the Barra de Valizas dunes as weak or without signal, which is reported only. Based on the network information alone, the providers whose pages name Antel (Holafly, Ubigi and ByteSIM) or several networks (Holafly) are the ones to look at for the interior, because Antel has the most base stations and, according to one provider's page, reaches furthest inland. None of them has a Uruguay record to prove it, and Holafly's speed is capped. Check the operators' own maps for your route [2] [3] [4].
Local SIM Cards and Operator eSIMs in Uruguay
A local SIM or operator eSIM beats a travel eSIM on price when you stay a week or more and use a lot of data, and a travel eSIM wins on convenience for a short trip or light use. As of September 2026, a Tigo chip costs UYU 60 [11] and its 7-day pack with 100 GB costs UYU 280 [9], UYU 340 in all. An Antel chip or eSIM costs UYU 65 [8] and its 7-day pack with 75 GB costs UYU 280 [7], UYU 345 in all. At UYU 40.19 to the US dollar (16 September 2026, as reported by Infobae), that is about USD 8.50 for a week, so a travel eSIM that costs more than that for a week of heavy use is dearer than a local SIM on price alone. The cost of a local SIM is time and paperwork, not money.
Antel
- Prices include IVA (value-added tax). Chip or eSIM UYU 65 [8]. A 3 GB pack for 24 hours costs UYU 60, 5 GB for 7 days UYU 199, 75 GB for 7 days UYU 280 and 125 GB for 10 days UYU 345 [7]. A bundle with 5 GB and minutes for 7 days costs UYU 260 [7].
- The eSIM must be activated within 30 days of purchase, is tied to one device and works on unlocked phones from other networks [6].
- Antel's top-up page accepts a passport as ID [7]. Online purchase needs a login on Antel's store, and we could not confirm that visitors can create one [8]. The store's price page carries a 30 Sep 2025 stamp, so the prices may have changed.
Tigo
- Chip UYU 60 [11]. Packs: 10 GB for 1 day UYU 60, 30 GB for 3 days UYU 150, 100 GB for 7 days UYU 280 and 60 GB for 30 days UYU 500 [9].
- You activate the chip by dialing *123#, entering your name and a document type and number, and topping up at least UYU 200. We could not confirm that a passport is accepted [11].
- The online prepaid eSIM comes with credit from UYU 200 plus 50 GB for 3 months [10]. Tigo emails the details within 24 business hours and ties the eSIM to one device, and moving it takes a store visit [10].
Claro
- A prepaid customer has to ask for an eSIM in a branch [12]. We could not read Claro's prepaid pack prices on its site.
We found no official source for prices or kiosks at the airport, so we cannot say whether buying there costs more. One travel-eSIM provider's page says Uruguayan prepaid cards must be registered in person with a passport, and we found no regulator page that confirms it. The practical split is simple. If you land late, stay a few days or want data before you reach a shop, a travel eSIM saves the queue. If you stay a week or more, use plenty of data and can visit an Antel or Tigo shop, a local SIM costs less.
Mobile Networks in Uruguay
Antel is the strongest Uruguayan network for speed and reach, Tigo and Claro lead on reliability, and all three cover the cities, so the choice matters mostly inland. According to URSEC figures reported in the press, Antel had about half of mobile subscribers at the end of 2025, 3,498 of the country's 7,186 base stations and 76% of its 5G antennas. Tigo, the former Movistar, had 28% and Claro 22% in mid-2025. URSEC publishes these figures twice a year [1], but its December 2025 coverage tables are images we could not read, so the 2022 LTE figure in the introduction is the latest we could verify.
According to Opensignal's South American awards (July to December 2025), Antel won download speed, video and games, while Tigo and Claro won reliability and Tigo won time on 4G/5G and the voice app. MedUX measured Antel fastest again in the first quarter of 2026. One speed-test dataset, SpeedGeo, found Movistar fastest, and its method is unknown, so we weigh the two independent sources more. Tigo became the new brand after Millicom completed its purchase in October 2025 [5].
On the operators' own pages, Antel's map shows 3.7G, LTE, NB-IoT and 5G and says GSM is being retired [2]. Tigo and Claro publish maps too [3] [4], and Claro's is labelled "3G y 4G". We found no 3G shutdown date. Here is which provider uses which network:
- Antel and others: Holafly (Antel, Movistar and Claro) [13], Ubigi (Antel and Tigo) [14] and ByteSIM (Antel as primary) [15].
- Not Antel: Nomad (Movistar) [16], Roamless (Tigo/Movistar) [17], Global YO (Claro) [18] and Airalo (Claro, per its product pages) [19]. eSIM4Travel is listed as Movistar in our comparison tool.
- Not named: Maya Mobile [20], Saily [21], Yesim [22], GoMoWorld [23] and GigSky [24] did not name a network on their pages when we checked in September 2026. We could not verify Jetpac's.
For a trip, this means providers on Antel have the edge on speed and inland reach, while providers on Tigo or Claro have the edge on stability, and the difference is small in cities. Being on Antel is not a guarantee: ByteSIM's single Uruguay report is a miss. If you go to Cabo Polonio or the northern departments, check the operators' maps first.
How to Set Up an eSIM for Uruguay
Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi before you fly, and let it connect for the first time in Uruguay. Most plans we tested start on the first connection to a network, not at install, but a few start earlier or need a manual step.
- Check that your phone works with eSIM and is unlocked. If this is your first eSIM, our first eSIM guide covers compatibility, buying and installing.
- Buy the plan close to the trip. Yesim's plan started at purchase in our test, GoMoWorld needs you to press Start in the app, and Saily plans start automatically on arrival.
- Install it on Wi-Fi. Maya Mobile, eSIM4Travel, Airalo, Nomad, Ubigi, Yesim, ByteSIM, Jetpac and Holafly send a QR code or install it from the app. GoMoWorld, Saily, Roamless, GigSky and Global YO deliver the eSIM through their app. Our guides cover adding an eSIM on an iPhone and on a Samsung phone.
- After landing, switch on the eSIM line, mobile data and data roaming. If there is no data, check the APN (the data setting): Maya Mobile and Global YO use globaldata. Our troubleshooting guide covers the rest.
- Keep a Wi-Fi spot in mind for top-ups. Most apps stop working when the data hits zero, and eSIM4Travel has no app at all. In our tests only GigSky and Ubigi let us buy more data with nothing left.
Calls and SMS in Uruguay
Most travel eSIMs are data only, so calls and texts go through WhatsApp or a similar app. Uruguay's calling code is +598, the prefix for calling Uruguayan numbers from abroad.
A few providers add voice. Airalo sells Discover+ plans with a US number. ByteSIM lists voice bundles with minutes and SMS on its Uruguay page [15], Saily sells an optional US number with calls and SMS [21], and Roamless offers an optional second number [17]. Jetpac sells voice packs in its app, and Global YO has outgoing calls over the internet. Jetpac packs of 3 GB or more also keep WhatsApp working after the data runs out. For ordinary local minutes, Antel and Tigo sell packs that include them [7] [9]; the local SIM section has the details.
Free eSIM Data for Uruguay
Three providers show a free trial that can be used in Uruguay. Roamless lists a free 400 MB eSIM for Uruguay, with a 30-day trial that starts on activation [17]. GoMoWorld lists a 1 GB trial valid for one day [23], and GigSky advertises a free trial [24]. Trials suit a test of the install and the signal, not a trip. See our guide to free eSIM data for other offers.

Summary: the best eSIM for Uruguay
Based on 14 traveler reports and our tests, the best option in our comparison is Maya Mobile: it worked well for 5 of 5 travelers who reported from Uruguay, and its global unlimited plan is the cheapest of its kind. Its weakness is that it has no Uruguay-only plan and nothing under 3 days. eSIM4Travel is the second pick, for its low price and a human help desk. Its weaknesses are that no traveler has reported from Uruguay yet and that it has no app.
The record behind both picks is thin. No other provider has the 3 reports a pick needs, and the two single misses, ByteSIM and Saily, are too few to explain. A local Antel or Tigo SIM costs less than most travel eSIMs for a week of heavy use, while a travel eSIM saves the queue on a short trip. The best eSIM for Uruguay will become clearer as more travelers report from here, and the live plan tables above show current prices.
