Best eSIM for Tanzania in 2026: 14 Providers Ranked by Traveler Reports

Key Takeaways

Key takeaways

Based on 54 traveler reports from Tanzania and our tests, the safest pick is Holafly: it worked well for 6 of 7 travelers who reported from Tanzania, but its speed was capped from the start in our test. GoMoWorld (3 of 4) showed no throttling and worked in the Serengeti, but left one traveler without signal on Kilimanjaro. GigSky (4 of 6) has a quick human help desk, but travelers reported gaps at Zanzibar Airport and outside cities. Maya Mobile (2 of 3) covers Kenya and Tanzania with one unlimited plan, but has no Tanzania-only plan. Nomad (4 of 7) suits experienced users, as its help desk was unreachable in our test.

Finding the best eSIM for Tanzania depends on where you are going, because coverage is strong in Dar es Salaam and thinner in the places most visitors travel to. 4G reaches 94.39% of people but only 77.53% of the land, and 5G reaches 34.18% of people and 11.34% of the land. More than 60% of the country's 5G stations are in Dar es Salaam [1].

We read 54 traveler reports from Tanzania. No provider has strong evidence yet, because the most reports any one provider has is 18, so every pick below rests on limited counts. Zanzibar is the place with the most reports and the most misses, and the reports from Kilimanjaro are mixed. The Serengeti reports were mostly positive.

Two facts matter when you pick a plan. A local SIM needs biometric registration under rules that TCRA's consumer council lists as the 2025 regulations [2], while a travel eSIM connects on landing. Peak game-viewing runs from June to September, with a shorter window in January and February, according to travel sources.

Best eSIM Providers for Tanzania

eSIM plans in Tanzania at a glance

How well each provider's eSIM works in Tanzania

The Vefru score is our overall rating of the provider. The percentage shows how many reviewers said their eSIM worked well in Tanzania. Since unhappy customers review more often, it is best used to compare providers with each other.

How we got these numbers: we read 54 public customer reviews that mention Tanzania or a place in it, published between July 2024 and August 2026, and counted a report as "worked" when the reviewer said the eSIM connected, even with small hiccups. We treat 20 or more reports as strong evidence, 3 to 19 as limited, and fewer than 3 as too few to judge. A count like 6 of 7 means the eSIM worked well for 6 of the 7 travelers who reported from here; each provider section says what went wrong for the rest. The Vefru test score is a separate number: our own hands-on test of the provider, run outside Tanzania, so it says how the provider behaves, not how the network performs here. Local operator prices in the text were checked on 26 September 2026; provider ratings, the plan tables and the price-per-GB chart are live and update on their own.

Holafly is an Irish eSIM provider built around unlimited data, with trip eSIMs for 200+ destinations. Travelers report it working more often than any other provider we track. Its weak points are speed and price: our test ran at about 30 Mbps on 5G, and its unlimited plans cost more than most.

Holafly eSIM in our hands

Holafly testing outdoor Holafly testing support Holafly testing support 2 Holafly testing speed

Holafly is the safest pick for travelers who want unlimited data and few surprises, but in our test its speed was capped from the start. That makes it enough for maps, messaging, browsing and streaming, and slow for large downloads, uploads, cloud backups and laptop work. It worked well for 6 of 7 travelers who reported from Tanzania (86%, limited evidence), the best share of any provider with 3 or more reports. The successes include two weeks on Zanzibar (June 2026), a 10-day trip and a month in Tanzania, where one traveler wrote "I never had any issues with the connection" (June 2026).

The one miss, from August 2026, came from a traveler who also bought two Africa eSIMs. They write that the Tanzania eSIM seemed to work fine, that the Africa eSIMs did not, and that service was slow or missing for much of the trip even though earlier reviews had praised the Serengeti and Zanzibar. The same traveler could not receive text-message codes, because Holafly sells data only. Holafly's own page says coverage is excellent in towns and weaker or unstable in deserts, mountains and jungles [4].

Holafly sells only unlimited plans for Tanzania, priced by the day, and names Vodacom as its network [4]. Vodacom had the highest quality-of-service score of the four large operators and the largest mobile-internet base in TCRA's June 2026 data [1]. Hotspot sharing is limited to 1 GB a day, and plans cannot be topped up, so a longer trip needs a new eSIM. On price, Holafly is usually the dearest unlimited option in our price analysis. Its Tanzania plans do not appear in our comparison tool as of October 2026, so there is no plan table here. Our full test is in the Holafly review, and plans are listed on Holafly's Tanzania page.

GoMoWorld eSIM in our hands

GoMoWorld testing preview GoMoWorld testing speed 1 GoMoWorld testing speed 2 GoMoWorld testing support

GoMoWorld suits travelers who want fast, unthrottled data on safari or in cities and are happy to start the plan themselves. It worked well for 3 of 4 travelers who reported from Tanzania (75%, limited evidence). One traveler wrote "Great connection even in the middle of the Serengeti" (June 2026). Another had trouble activating the eSIM and got data only after switching local networks by hand (May 2026), a hiccup that still counts as worked.

The one miss was seven days without signal in Kilimanjaro National Park (July 2026), while other travelers on eSIMs and SIMs from other companies had signal. That reviewer would use GoMoWorld again for city breaks, but not outdoors.

GoMoWorld sells four Tanzania plans in our comparison tool, from 2 GB to 30 GB with 7-day or 30-day validity, 5G where the network has it and hotspot allowed. It has no unlimited plan and no voice. It does not name its Tanzania networks on its page (checked September 2026) [11]. In our test it showed no sign of throttling, and an unstarted plan does not expire, but nothing works until you press Start or schedule the plan, which is the most common reason it seems not to work. The eSIM is delivered only in the app, one account per device, and human help is available in office hours only. On price it sits slightly below the market median. See the GoMoWorld review for the full test, or the plans on GoMoWorld's site.

GigSky eSIM in our hands

GigSky testing outdoor GigSky testing speed 1 GigSky testing speed 2 GigSky testing support

GigSky suits travelers who value a quick human help desk and the ability to buy more data without Wi-Fi, with a stated drawback: gaps outside the cities. It worked well for 4 of 6 travelers who reported from Tanzania (67%, limited evidence). The successes are mostly short trips: "Good network provider in Tanzania" (August 2026), a 3 GB weekly plan renewed twice in Zanzibar (January 2025), and a traveler who used it in Tanzania and Kenya without a disruption (February 2025). Two Africa eSIMs bought for a trip through Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa worked only in Tanzania and a little in Kenya (July 2025).

The two misses were on an Africa regional plan and at Zanzibar Airport. One traveler reported poor reception in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya outside the cities, while the tour guide's local SIM had none of those problems (August 2025). Another found nothing at Zanzibar Airport and asked for a refund (July 2024, the oldest report here). In Zanzibar itself the record is split, one worked and one missed.

GigSky sells Tanzania plans from 1 GB to 10 GB with 7 to 30 days of validity, a one-day unlimited pass, and Africa and World plans in our comparison tool. Its page says it connects to the fastest network available and names none [12]. Its unlimited plans slow down after a daily allowance. In our test a human on the help desk answered immediately, and the app stays partly online after data runs out, so you can buy a new plan without Wi-Fi, which only Ubigi matched. The app is required to buy. On price it is among the two dearest providers overall, and its 5 GB and 10 GB Tanzania plans cost more than most rivals' in our comparison tool. The GigSky review has the full test, and plans are on GigSky's Tanzania page.

Maya Mobile eSIM in our hands

Maya Mobile testing preview Maya Mobile testing speed 1 Maya Mobile testing speed 2 Maya Mobile testing support

Maya Mobile suits trips that cross borders, mainly Kenya plus Tanzania, because one unlimited plan covers more than 165 destinations, Tanzania among them [13]. It worked well for 2 of 3 travelers who reported from Tanzania (67%, limited evidence). One traveler used a single Maya eSIM across Indonesia, Kenya and Tanzania and needed only one reload (September 2025).

The miss was a September 2025 review from a traveler who found the Airtel connection in Tanzania "simply disappointing" and fell back on costly roaming on their home SIM, while the same eSIM worked consistently in Kenya. Maya does not name its network on its page (checked September 2026), so the Airtel detail comes from that review.

Maya sells no Tanzania-only plan. It sells global unlimited plans for 3, 7, 14 or 30 days, with hotspot allowed and no calls or texts [13]. Maya's page says there are no caps and no throttling, while our test and the plan data in our comparison tool show full speed only up to a daily allowance. In our test the install took one click, we had to set the APN "globaldata" and roaming ourselves, and the help desk was slower: a bot, then a form, then a human. On price it is the cheapest global unlimited plan we compared, but it sells nothing small. Across all destinations, traveler reports rank it second-most reliable of the 14 providers. See the Maya Mobile review or the plans on Maya's site.

Nomad eSIM in our hands

Nomad testing preview Nomad testing speed 1 Nomad testing speed 2 Nomad testing support

Nomad suits experienced users who can fix problems themselves and travel on the Airtel network [6]. It worked well for 4 of 7 travelers who reported from Tanzania (57%, limited evidence). The best reports say it "worked well (good coverage!)" (August 2026) and describe a good connection in Dar es Salaam (June 2026).

The written reviews are more mixed than the count suggests. Travelers described the Airtel signal as poor in both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar (August 2026), patchy next to a friend's other provider (August 2026), and weak at North Serengeti compared with another provider (August 2026). One three-week trip had no connection in Dar es Salaam, poor data in Mtwara and weak data in Stone Town and Paje (June 2026). A family of five also had trouble activating some of their eSIMs, which showed an expired code (August 2026).

Nomad sells five Tanzania plans in our comparison tool, from 1 GB to 20 GB with 7, 30 or 45 days of validity, plus regional Africa plans. It has no unlimited plan and no voice for Tanzania. Hotspot and add-on data are allowed. On price it is usually among the cheapest country plans here and slightly below the market overall. In our test the app was good, with a home-screen widget that shows remaining data, but the help desk was a bot with no route to a human, which is why Nomad sits last in this group. The Nomad review has the full test, and plans are on Nomad's site.

Airalo eSIM in our hands

Airalo testing outdoor Airalo testing speed 1 Airalo testing speed 2 Airalo testing support

Airalo is a weak first choice for Tanzania: it worked well for 7 of 18 travelers who reported from here (39%, limited evidence), the lowest share of any provider with 3 or more reports. It is also the provider with the most reports, and all 18 date from June to August 2026. The successes were at Kilimanjaro Airport on landing and in the Serengeti, where one traveler had coverage for three weeks (August 2026), plus reports from Moshi and Dar es Salaam. The misses were wider: no data at all across the mainland and Zanzibar despite a good LTE indicator (July 2026), and a reviewer who could "barely send WhatsApp messages or open a web page" in Zanzibar while a partner's local SIM worked (June 2026). In Mwanza, a large city, one traveler got only 3G, even though friends on local Halotel and Airtel SIMs had data, and used 2.7 GB of a 10 GB plan in 30 days (June 2026).

Airalo's page names Halotel as its main Tanzania network, plus one unnamed network [5], although many travel sites describe it as Vodacom. Halotel met the regulator's data-speed target in 15 of 22 areas, the fewest of the five operators [1]. Airalo sells 17 Tanzania plans in our comparison tool, from 1 GB to 20 GB plus unlimited plans for 3 to 30 days, which slow down after a daily allowance. It also sells a Safarilink plan for Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, Africa plans, and global Discover and Discover+ plans, the latter with a US number. In our test it had an easy purchase and a polished app, and it ranks last of the 14 providers for reliability in traveler reports across all destinations. On price it sits at the market, never cheap. Travelers who want a US number for calls and texts have the Discover+ plan. The Airalo review has the full test, and plans are on Airalo's Tanzania page.

Yesim eSIM in our hands

Yesim testing outdoor Yesim testing speed 1 Yesim testing speed 2 Yesim testing support

Yesim is a flexible option with only two reports from Tanzania, so the evidence is too thin to rank it higher. Both said it worked, one on Zanzibar and one on Mount Kilimanjaro. We have no review text for those two reports, so we cannot say what the successes had in common.

Yesim sells Tanzania plans from 1 GB to 20 GB with 1 to 30 days of validity in our comparison tool, unlimited plans sold by the day, and Africa and global bundles. It says its eSIM switches between carriers automatically and names none. In our test the help desk was among the slowest, with 15 to 60 minutes per reply, and our plan started at purchase, so buying close to the trip avoids losing days. On price, its unlimited plans sit at the market and its fixed country plans are dearer. The Yesim review has the full test, and plans are on Yesim's Tanzania page.

ByteSIM has one report from Tanzania, a positive review from July 2024, which is too few to judge. The traveler bought a 14-day Tanzania eSIM and found it easy to set up. They needed a SIM PIN, the help desk answered quickly, and coverage was "way better than expected".

ByteSIM's Tanzania page lists Airtel and 4G, but we read it only through a search index, so we could not confirm it [14]. Its Tanzania plans do not appear in our comparison tool as of October 2026, so there is no plan table. In our test the checkout was clumsy, the app was a wrapped website, and the WhatsApp help desk did not answer within 15 minutes, although customers report fast replies. Saily eSIM in our hands

Saily testing outdoor Saily testing speed 1 Saily testing speed 2 Saily testing support

Saily is the easiest eSIM to install and has one of the two best help desks we tested, but only one traveler has reported from Tanzania: a worked-well review covering Tanzania, Zanzibar and Germany (August 2026). That is too few to judge, and it is why Saily is not a top pick here.

Saily sells Tanzania plans from 1 GB to 10 GB with 7 or 30 days of validity in our comparison tool, and no unlimited plan. It does not name its Tanzania network on its page (checked September 2026). Its optional phone number is American, not Tanzanian. In our test the eSIM could only be bought and installed in the app, the plan started on first connection, and the data stopped hard at the limit. On price it is among the dearest providers in the places travelers go. The Saily review has the full test, and plans are on Saily's Tanzania page.

Global YO eSIM in our hands

Global YO testing outdoor Global YO testing speed 1 Global YO testing speed 2 Global YO testing support

Global YO is among the cheapest providers overall, but its Tanzania record is split: it worked well for 1 of 2 travelers who reported from here (50%, too few to judge). The success was a June 2026 review thanking the help desk for fixing a problem in Tanzania. The miss was a four-week self-drive trip through Uganda and Tanzania in late 2024, where the eSIM connected for about 20 minutes and then not at all. The traveler spent the holiday on the help desk, was told repeatedly to check settings, and was refused a refund after using about half a GB.

Global YO sells Tanzania plans from 1 GB to 100 GB with 3 to 60 days of validity, allows hotspot and top-ups, and has no unlimited plan. Its Africa Explorer plan covers ten African countries. Its page lists Zantel as the network and marks the plans 4G only [10], but Zantel no longer exists as a consumer brand, so the listing is out of date. In our test the eSIM could only be bought in the app, the first help desk reply took 10 minutes and was a template, and the APN "globaldata" may need setting by hand. The Global YO review has the full test, and plans are on Global YO's Tanzania page.

Ubigi eSIM in our hands

Ubigi testing preview Ubigi testing speed 1 Ubigi testing speed 2 Ubigi testing support

Ubigi is not a top pick for Tanzania: both travelers who reported from here said it failed (0 of 2, too few to judge). One found the service very intermittent in Moshi and essentially unusable on Mount Kilimanjaro, where a friend's home SIM had coverage most of the time (August 2026). The other, on an Africa eSIM, wrote that it did not work at all on the first stop in Tanzania and that the email to the help desk went unanswered (July 2026).

Ubigi's page lists Halotel and Yas for Tanzania and marks 5G unavailable [7]. It sells Tanzania plans of 1, 3, 10 and 25 GB with 7 to 30 days of validity, an 8-day unlimited plan with a fair-use limit, and Africa and World plans. In our test its network was strong and the app lets you buy more data with a zero balance, but the site and app were weak and the help desk was the worst we tested, with no reply in 24 hours. On price it sits slightly below the market. The Ubigi review has the full test, and the provider is on Ubigi's site.

Jetpac eSIM in our hands

Jetpac sells no Tanzania-only plan, and its one report from the country was a failure (0 of 1, too few to judge). A traveler on a Kenya and Tanzania safari bought the Africa eSIM because it was advertised for both countries (November 2025). It did not work in Tanzania, hours on the chat line produced only guesses, and a different eSIM bought on Wi-Fi worked. The traveler says Jetpac has no partner network in Tanzania, which we could not confirm.

Jetpac's Africa plans in our comparison tool run from 1 GB to 20 GB with 4, 7 or 30 days of validity and 5G, and cover Tanzania with Algeria, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Zambia. We could not confirm an official Jetpac page for Tanzania, and it names no network on its global pages. In our test the app and checkout were rough, but it has in-app voice packs, lounge access when a flight is delayed by an hour or more, and free WhatsApp and Maps after the data runs out on plans of 3 GB or more. On price it is dear for 3 GB to 20 GB. The Jetpac review has the full test, and the provider is on Jetpac's site.

eSIM4Travel is the cheapest provider in our price analysis overall, but Tanzania is an exception, and no traveler has reported from Tanzania yet, so it sits in this group. Its 2 GB to 10 GB Tanzania plans are at or above the median of the other providers in our comparison tool, which removes the advantage that normally earns it a top place. Travelers who used two other providers on Airtel described weak signal in Tanzania, and eSIM4Travel has no reports of its own to set against that.

eSIM4Travel sells five Tanzania plans, from 1 GB to 10 GB with 1, 7 or 30 days of validity, and names Airtel as its network on the plan page [9]. Hotspot and top-ups are allowed, and the validity starts at first connection. It has no unlimited plan for Tanzania, and its daily plans throttle after an allowance. In our test it had the best help desk, with one click from the bot to a human who solved the problem, and the eSIM installed from a QR code and worked right away. It has no app, so when data runs out you cannot reach the store without Wi-Fi. The eSIM4Travel review has the full test, and plans are on eSIM4Travel's Tanzania page.

Roamless has no traveler reports from Tanzania yet, and Tanzania is one of the African countries where our price analysis finds it dear, so it is not a top pick. Across all destinations, traveler reports rank it third-most reliable of the 14 providers.

Roamless sells 30-day Tanzania plans from 1 GB to 45 GB and pay-as-you-go credit that never expires, and lists a free 200 MB trial. It names Airtel with 3G, LTE, 4G and 5G, and says hotspot is unlimited with no speed limit [8]. In our test the eSIM could only be bought in the app, Google Pay failed, the preselected APN did not work, and a human fixed it in 29 minutes. Price per GB in Tanzania by eSIM Provider

How much does each provider charge per GB in Tanzania? The chart below compares plans of 1 to 10 GB that last 6 to 14 days, the usual range for a one- or two-week trip. Provider websites show only their own plans, so this side-by-side view is one you would otherwise have to calculate yourself. A shorter bar means a lower price per GB.

Generated 03.11.2026 06:43

Most providers sell Tanzania country plans from 1 GB to 20 GB. Global YO goes up to 100 GB and Roamless up to 45 GB. In our comparison tool, unlimited plans come from Airalo, Ubigi, Yesim and GigSky (one-day passes only). Maya Mobile's unlimited plan is global, and Holafly's unlimited plans are not in the tool yet. Unlimited plans slow down after a daily allowance, so that allowance matters for laptop work, and Global YO's Tanzania plans are 4G only. Which provider is cheapest depends on plan size, so the tier tables below are separate, and our cheapest eSIM comparison covers price across countries. If your trip also includes Egypt, you can compare plans that cover both Tanzania and Egypt.

Best eSIM for Zanzibar, the Serengeti and Kilimanjaro

Zanzibar has by far the most reports, and it is where the providers split. The Serengeti and Kilimanjaro have only a few reports each, so no provider reaches 3 reports there. The rows for "Serengeti" and "Serengeti National Park" are merged below, and so are "Mount Kilimanjaro" and "Kilimanjaro National Park". Counts show how many travelers said the eSIM worked out of all who reported from that place.

Best eSIM for Zanzibar

Holafly is the pick for Zanzibar, with the drawback that its speed is capped in our test. It worked for 2 of the 3 travelers who reported from the island, and it is the only provider with 3 or more reports there that worked for most of them. One traveler used it for two weeks (June 2026), and another reported stable internet across Tanzania including Zanzibar (May 2026). The miss was the traveler on Africa regional eSIMs described under Holafly above.

The runners-up failed in specific ways. Airalo worked for 1 of 4 travelers: the reports describe very poor reception around the island, maps and WhatsApp that barely loaded, and no data at all on a trip across the mainland and Zanzibar. One reviewer pointed out that Airalo uses Halotel while the island has 3 or 4 operators (July 2026). Nomad worked for 0 of 2, with the Airtel signal called poor in Zanzibar (August 2026) and Stone Town and Paje not working well (June 2026). GigSky worked for 1 of 2: a 3 GB weekly plan had gaps in some areas (January 2025), and a July 2024 report found nothing at Zanzibar Airport. Yesim (2 of 2) and Saily (1 of 1) worked, but each has fewer than 3 reports.

The regulator's June 2026 measurements put Yas first on Unguja, Zanzibar's main island, and Airtel last of the four operators measured there. Halotel has no figure for the island [1]. The two providers whose Zanzibar reports went worst, Airalo (Halotel) and Nomad (Airtel), use those two networks. One traveler's partner bought a local SIM that worked perfectly on the island (June 2026).

Best eSIM for the Serengeti

No provider has 3 reports from the Serengeti, so the country pick applies, and the reports lean positive: 3 of the 4 said the eSIM worked. GoMoWorld worked "in the middle of the Serengeti" (June 2026), and an Airalo traveler had coverage across Tanzania, including on safari in the Serengeti, for three weeks (August 2026). The Holafly miss came from the traveler on Africa regional eSIMs. The table shows Nomad 1/1, but its written review (August 2026) says reception at North Serengeti was much weaker than another provider's, so treat that as a success with a hiccup.

We could not find a public coverage map from Vodacom, Airtel, Yas or Halotel in September 2026. The regulator measured Airtel fastest in Arusha and Manyara, the gateway region for the northern parks [1]. Holafly's own page says coverage is weaker in deserts, mountains and jungles [4].

Best eSIM for Kilimanjaro and Moshi

No provider has 3 reports from Kilimanjaro, so the country pick applies, but the reports show where eSIMs fail: on the mountain itself. Yesim worked for 2 of 2 travelers on Mount Kilimanjaro. GoMoWorld left a traveler without a network for seven days in Kilimanjaro National Park (July 2026), and Ubigi was "essentially unusable" on the mountain and very intermittent in Moshi (August 2026). In both cases, travelers on other SIMs or eSIMs had signal.

In Moshi, Airalo and GoMoWorld each had a report that it worked, and Ubigi had a miss. An Airalo traveler landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport had data right away (August 2026). The regulator measured Yas fastest in the Kilimanjaro region and Airtel slowest of the five operators [1]. Yesim names no network on its page, so we cannot say which one carried those two reports.

Local SIM Cards and Operator eSIMs in Tanzania

A Tanzania SIM card for tourists beats a travel eSIM on price for trips of two weeks or more with more than about 5 GB, and a travel eSIM wins for short stopovers, late arrivals and anyone who does not want a fingerprint check. That is what our research found as of September 2026.

Travel sites report these Vodacom prepaid prices as of September 2026. The SIM card costs TZS 1,000 to 1,500 (under US$1). A bundle of 3 GB for 7 days costs TZS 10,000 (about US$4), 10 GB for 30 days costs TZS 30,000 (about US$11 to US$12) with minutes and SMS, and 19.9 GB for 30 days costs TZS 50,000 (about US$19). Another source lists 9.8 GB for 30 days at TZS 20,000, so the 10 GB price differs between sources. In our research the 10 GB Vodacom bundle undercut every 10 GB travel eSIM we found, and the gap was smaller at 1 to 3 GB.

Registration is biometric. According to three law-firm commentaries on the earlier 2020 rules, a visitor presents a passport copy with a visa and has a fingerprint checked against NIDA or immigration records, and the SIM is registered in the visitor's name. TCRA's consumer council lists the Biometric SIM Card Registration Regulations, 2025 [2], but we did not read the text. Reported limits are one SIM per operator per person and deactivation after 90 days unused. One commentary says SIMs from foreign operators roaming in Tanzania are exempt, which would cover travel eSIMs, but it describes the 2020 rules, so we could not confirm it for the 2025 rules.

A Vodacom store sits beside the international arrivals exit at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, with Yas, Halotel and Airtel sellers toward the taxi stand, according to a 2023 source we could not re-verify. Counters also exist at Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar airports, charge tourist prices and may be closed on very early or late arrivals. One traveler reports an informal seller charging ten times the standard price. We could not confirm whether Vodacom, Airtel, Yas or Halotel sell a consumer eSIM to visitors, because sources from 2023, 2025 and 2026 disagree.

Mobile Networks in Tanzania

Vodacom is the strongest network overall, Yas is fastest in Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Mwanza and Kilimanjaro, and Airtel is fastest in Arusha and Manyara, according to the regulator's June 2026 measurements [1]. By subscriptions, Vodacom has 33.0%, Yas 28.6%, Airtel 20.5%, Halotel 16.4% and the state operator TTCL 1.5%. Halotel had the lowest quality-of-service score of the five and met the data-speed target in the fewest areas. TTCL scored highest, but no provider we compared routes through it [1]. Tigo became Yas on 26 November 2024, with existing SIMs and bundles carried over [3].

Which provider rides which network matters more than the provider's name:

  • Vodacom: Holafly names it on its page [4].
  • Airtel: Nomad [6], Roamless [8] and eSIM4Travel [9] name it. ByteSIM's page reportedly lists it [14].
  • Halotel: Airalo names it plus one unnamed network [5], and Ubigi names Halotel and Yas [7].
  • Not named: Saily, Yesim, GigSky, Jetpac, GoMoWorld and Maya Mobile did not name a network on the pages we could read in September 2026.
  • Out of date: Global YO lists Zantel [10], a brand that, according to trade press, was absorbed into Yas.

The reports line up with this on small counts. The Vodacom-based Holafly has the best record, travelers on Airtel-based Nomad and Maya Mobile described weak signal, and Halotel-based Airalo had the most misses. Many travel sites describe Airalo as Vodacom, but its own page names Halotel. Ubigi marks 5G as unavailable in Tanzania [7], which fits a country where 5G reaches about a third of people.

3G still reaches 93.95% of people [1], and our research found no shutdown date. Media reports say Tanzania co-hosts the Africa Cup of Nations with Kenya and Uganda from 19 June 2027, with matches in Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Zanzibar. The end date and venue list are not yet confirmed with the organizers.

How to Set Up an eSIM for Tanzania

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, because several providers' apps stop working when the data runs out and some travelers could not reach a help desk without another connection. Our first eSIM guide covers compatibility, and phone-specific steps are in the iPhone and Samsung guides.

  1. Check that your phone can use an eSIM and is not locked to a carrier.
  2. Buy the plan and install it on Wi-Fi before you fly. Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Maya Mobile, Ubigi, Yesim, eSIM4Travel, ByteSIM and Jetpac send a QR code by email. GoMoWorld, Saily, Roamless and GigSky deliver the eSIM only in their app, and Global YO needs the app to buy.
  3. Find out when the plan starts. Most start on first connection in Tanzania. In our tests Yesim started at purchase, GoMoWorld waits until you press Start, and some Airalo packages start at install.
  4. On arrival, turn on the eSIM line and data roaming. If there is no data, check the APN (Maya Mobile and Global YO use "globaldata", GigSky uses "gigsky") and try selecting another local network by hand, which fixed one GoMoWorld traveler's connection.
  5. If it still fails, contact the provider's help desk while you have Wi-Fi, and see our troubleshooting guide.

Calls and SMS in Tanzania

Almost every eSIM for Tanzania is data-only, so calls and texts go through WhatsApp or similar apps. Tanzania's international calling code is +255. In our comparison tool, no Tanzania country plan includes voice or SMS.

A few providers sell extras. Airalo's Discover+ plan comes with a US number, Saily has an optional US number, Roamless has in-app calls and a second-number add-on, Jetpac sells in-app voice packs, and Global YO has outgoing app calls. None of these is a Tanzanian number. One Holafly traveler could not receive text-message codes for banking while in Tanzania (August 2026), and Holafly's data-only plans are the reason. A local SIM from Vodacom, Airtel, Yas or Halotel is the only route to a Tanzanian number, and Vodacom's 10 GB bundle includes minutes and SMS.

Free eSIM Data for Tanzania

Two providers list a free trial for Tanzania: GoMoWorld offers 500 MB for one day [11], and Roamless lists a free 200 MB trial [8]. GigSky also lists a free trial whose size varies by region, which we could not confirm for Tanzania. A trial is enough to test installation before you fly, not to run a trip. More offers are in our free eSIM guide.

Frequently Asked Questions About eSIMs in Tanzania

Which eSIM works best in Tanzania?
Holafly had the best record in traveler reports from Tanzania: it worked well for 6 of 7 travelers (86%). Its speed is capped from the start in our test, so it suits maps, messaging and streaming better than large downloads. GoMoWorld followed with 3 of 4 and showed no throttling in our test. Compare current plans with (eSIM Comparison).
Do I need to register to use an eSIM in Tanzania?
A travel eSIM needs no passport or fingerprint check according to one law-firm commentary, but that commentary covers the 2020 rules and we could not confirm it for the 2025 rules. A local SIM needs biometric registration with a passport, visa and fingerprint check, and one SIM per operator. Global YO and ByteSIM both say no ID is needed.
Is eSIM coverage good in Zanzibar?
Coverage in Zanzibar is mixed. It is the place with the most reports, 14, and Holafly worked well for 2 of 3 travelers there, Airalo for 1 of 4 and Nomad for 0 of 2. The regulator's June 2026 data has Yas fastest on the main island and Airtel slowest of the four operators measured.
How much data do I need for Tanzania?
It depends on how you use maps, messaging and video, and the traveler reports give no single figure. Video calls and streaming use far more than maps and messaging. Our calculator turns your habits into a number (Travel Data Calculator). Longer trips also change which size makes sense (How Much Mobile Data Do You Need for Travel in 2026? | Vefru).
Is a local SIM cheaper than an eSIM in Tanzania?
A local Vodacom SIM was cheaper than every 10 GB travel eSIM our research found, as of September 2026, and it includes minutes and SMS. The trade-offs are a passport and fingerprint check and possible queues at airport counters. A travel eSIM connects on landing. Compare current eSIM plans with (eSIM Comparison).
Which eSIM works in the Serengeti and on Kilimanjaro?
No provider has 3 reports from either place. In the Serengeti, 3 of 4 reports said the eSIM worked, including GoMoWorld and Airalo. On Kilimanjaro, Yesim worked in 2 of 2 reports, while GoMoWorld and Ubigi each had a report of no signal. Holafly's own page says coverage is weaker in deserts, mountains and jungles.
Can I use one eSIM for Kenya and Tanzania?
Yes, but the reports favor one global plan over Africa regional plans. Maya Mobile worked in 2 of 3 reports from Tanzania, including one trip across Indonesia, Kenya and Tanzania. Several travelers on Africa regional plans from GigSky, Jetpac, Holafly and Ubigi described poor or no service in Tanzania. Compare plans with (eSIM Comparison).

Summary: the best eSIM for Tanzania

Based on 54 traveler reports and our tests, Holafly has the best record in Tanzania (6 of 7), with the drawback that its speed was capped from the start in our test. GoMoWorld (3 of 4) showed no throttling and worked in the Serengeti, but one traveler had no signal for seven days in Kilimanjaro National Park. GigSky (4 of 6) has a quick human help desk and offline top-up, with gaps outside cities and at Zanzibar Airport. Maya Mobile (2 of 3) covers Kenya and Tanzania with one unlimited plan, and sells no Tanzania-only plan. Nomad (4 of 7) has a good app and a fair price, but an unreachable help desk and mixed written reviews.

The counts are limited for every provider, and Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro are the places where eSIMs failed most. Airalo, the provider with the most reports, worked for 7 of 18. A local Vodacom SIM costs less on longer, data-heavy trips but needs a fingerprint check. The best eSIM for Tanzania depends on the route: the reports favor Holafly for a trip with Zanzibar, GoMoWorld for the Serengeti and cities, and Maya Mobile when Kenya is part of the plan.
