Key takeaways
Based on 13 traveler reports from El Salvador and our tests, the best option for trips of a week or more is Maya Mobile: it worked well for 3 of 3 travelers who reported from El Salvador, and its global unlimited plan was the cheapest unlimited plan we compared, but it sells nothing for short, small needs. Holafly also worked well for 3 of 3 and connects to three networks, but its speed was capped from the start in our test. eSIM4Travel is among the cheaper options here, has no El Salvador reports yet and has no app. Evidence is limited for every provider.

The best eSIM for El Salvador is hard to pick from traveler reports alone: we found 13 public reports across seven providers, and no provider has more than 3. Every pick on this page therefore rests on limited evidence, and we say so wherever it matters. The short answer is Maya Mobile for week-long trips, Holafly for unlimited data at capped speed, and a registered Tigo prepaid SIM if you can get one.
El Salvador is small, with one international airport, San Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez (SAL), and mobile coverage is wide. Press reports citing the regulator, SIGET, put cellular coverage at 96% of the territory and 4G at 87.5% of the population. The gaps are in parks and border areas. One provider's page lists weak signal around El Imposible, Montecristo near Metapán, the Jiquilisco Bay mangroves, the roads around Perquín, the upper Santa Ana volcano and Gulf of Fonseca crossings. We could not confirm that list against an operator map.
According to tourism figures reported in the press, most visitors are Guatemalans and Hondurans who mostly arrive overland, so an eSIM that also covers a neighbour can save a second purchase. The dry season runs from November to April and the rainy season from May to October. Local SIMs are cheap but need registration, which the local SIM section explains.

How well each provider's eSIM works in El Salvador

How we got these numbers: we read 13 public customer reviews that mention El Salvador or a place in it, published between May 2026 and July 2026, and counted a report as "worked" when the reviewer said the eSIM connected, even with small hiccups. We treat 20 or more reports as strong evidence, 3 to 19 as limited, and fewer than 3 as too few to judge. A count like 3 of 3 means the eSIM worked well for all 3 travelers who reported from here; each provider section says what went wrong for the rest. The Vefru test score is a separate number: our own hands-on test of the provider, run outside El Salvador, so it says how the provider behaves, not how the network performs here. Local operator prices in the text were checked on 25 September 2026; provider ratings, the plan tables and the price-per-GB chart are live and update on their own.

We ranked providers on traveler reports from El Salvador first, price second and our own tests third. Only two providers have 3 or more reports, so the Best group is smaller than usual: Maya Mobile and Holafly qualify on reports, and eSIM4Travel is included because its price position and test results hold up for El Salvador even without reports.

Maya Mobile eSIM in our hands
Maya Mobile is the best fit for trips of a week or more, or trips that cross into Guatemala or Honduras, because its single global unlimited plan covers El Salvador and was the cheapest unlimited plan we compared. It worked well for 3 of 3 travelers who reported from El Salvador (limited evidence). None reported a miss, but three reports are too few to show where in the country they used it or what the successes had in common.
The drawbacks are about fit, not failures. Maya sells no El Salvador plan and nothing for small needs: its shortest plan lasts 3 days, so a light-use weekend costs more than a small country plan elsewhere. We could not confirm which network it uses in El Salvador, and its fair-use rule is flagged for re-checking in our research (as of September 2026). In our test, speed slowed only after a high daily allowance, the fairest unlimited rule we tested. Help came through a WhatsApp bot, a form and then a person, who could not see our eSIM status.
The plans are global unlimited passes of 3, 7, 14 and 30 days, with cruise versions, hotspot allowed and top-ups possible. The QR code arrives by email, and you set the access point name (APN, a data setting) to "globaldata" and turn on roaming yourself. A Tigo prepaid unlimited pack costs less (see the local SIM section) but needs registration. Our Maya Mobile review covers the test findings, and Maya Mobile's site lists the current plans.

Holafly is an Irish eSIM provider built around unlimited data, with trip eSIMs for 200+ destinations. Travelers report it working more often than any other provider we track. Its weak points are speed and price: our test ran at about 30 Mbps on 5G, and its unlimited plans cost more than most.

Holafly eSIM in our hands
Holafly suits travelers who want unlimited data with no plan to size, and who may leave the cities, because its own page says it connects to Tigo, Claro (listed as CTE Telecom Personal) and Movistar. It worked well for 3 of 3 travelers who reported from El Salvador (limited evidence). The catch is speed: in our test, Holafly's speed was capped from the start, before any data was used. That is enough for maps, messaging, browsing and streaming, and slow for large downloads, uploads, cloud backups and laptop work.
No traveler reported a miss, so there is no failure pattern to describe, and three reports are too few to show where in the country it was used. Across all countries, Holafly had the best traveler-report record of the 14 providers, so the El Salvador result fits its wider record. The reports show the eSIM connected; our test found the speed capped.
Holafly sells unlimited plans only, priced by the day, with lengths from 1 to 30 days on its page (as of September 2026). Hotspot use is limited to 1 GB a day, there are no top-ups (you buy a new eSIM) and the eSIM is data only. It is among the most expensive unlimited options in our comparison. Our comparison tool listed no Holafly plan for El Salvador when we exported the data, so there is no live plan table here; Holafly's El Salvador page has the current plans. Our Holafly review covers the speed finding.

eSIM4Travel eSIM in our hands
Based on our tests and its price position, eSIM4Travel is the budget option for El Salvador: in our comparison tool it was cheaper than most providers for 3 GB and 5 GB plans and around the middle for 10 GB, though Global YO and GoMoWorld undercut it at some sizes. There are no traveler reports from El Salvador yet, so we cannot say how it performs on the ground. Its place rests on price and on what we found in testing, which took place in Switzerland, not here.
With no reports there are no misses to describe. In our test, the help desk was the best we tested: one click from the bot to a person, who solved the problem and suggested switching network. The eSIM installed from a QR code and worked right away. Its page lists three networks for El Salvador, Movistar, Tigo and Claro, but one El Salvador page is titled Movistar and another variant is titled Claro, so treat the list as unconfirmed (as of September 2026).
Plans run from 100 MB day passes to 20 GB over 30 days, plus unlimited for 3, 5 or 7 days that slows after 3 GB a day. Validity starts on first connection, you have 90 days to activate, hotspot is allowed and top-ups are possible. A Latin America regional plan also covers the country. The drawbacks are no app, no Google Pay and, once data runs out, no way to buy more without Wi-Fi; the eSIM works on one device only. Our eSIM4Travel review covers the test findings, and eSIM4Travel's El Salvador page lists the plans.

GoMoWorld eSIM in our hands
GoMoWorld fits heavy data users who install at home, but two reports are too few to rank it. It worked well for 2 of 2 travelers who reported from El Salvador, and neither described a miss. One wrote on 29 Jul 2026, "Works very good here in El Salvador". The other, in May 2026, used one eSIM across Honduras and El Salvador and liked not needing a new eSIM for each country.
Its El Salvador plans are 3.5 GB for 7 days and 15, 35 and 55 GB for 30 days, with 4G and tethering; there is no unlimited plan and no calls. Latin America plans run from 1 to 11 GB, and a free 1-day plan is listed. In our test, tested in Austria, we saw no sign of throttling, but the eSIM exists only in the app (one account, one device) and a plan does nothing until you press Start, the most common reason for "not working". Human help answers only in office hours. Price is below the market average overall and best for 5 GB and up. We could not confirm its network in El Salvador. See our GoMoWorld review and GoMoWorld's site.

Roamless is a US provider built around one global eSIM for 203 destinations, paid with pay-as-you-go credit. It was fast and unthrottled in our test, and travelers report it working in 91% of cases. Roamless eSIM in our hands
Roamless suits light, multi-country use: it worked well for 2 of 2 travelers who reported from El Salvador, which is too few to rank it, and neither described a miss. Its page lists Tigo and Movistar (3G and 4G) as its El Salvador networks. It sells pay-as-you-go credit that never expires beside 30-day fixed plans from 1 to 50 GB, with unlimited hotspot and a free trial listed for El Salvador.
In our test, purchase was the weak point: Google Pay failed and the eSIM exists only in the app. The preselected APN did not work until we picked another access point name, and after that speed was full. A zero balance left a trickle of data, enough to reach the app and top up. Price is near the market average, cheap at 1 GB and dearer from 10 GB up. In-app VoIP calls and an optional second number exist. Our Roamless review has the details, and Roamless's El Salvador page lists the plans.

Global YO eSIM in our hands
Global YO is the budget choice for big data needs, but one report is too few to judge it. It worked well for 1 of 1 traveler who reported from El Salvador. Its page lists Tigo as the network, with 4G only, so expect no 5G. Country plans run from 1 GB for 3 days to 100 GB for 60 days, with hotspot and top-ups allowed, plus Latin America and global plans. In our comparison tool it was among the cheapest providers for 5 GB and up.
In our test, purchase happens only in the app and the eSIM arrives by email. The app is polished but cluttered, and you switch mobile data to the eSIM yourself. Help was slow: the first reply took about 10 minutes and was a template. Across all countries its traveler-report record is below the market average. Our Global YO review has the details, and Global YO's El Salvador page lists the plans.

Nomad eSIM in our hands
Nomad suits experienced users who will not need the help desk. It worked well for 1 of 1 traveler who reported from El Salvador, which is too few to judge. Its page lists Claro, the network that press reports say won Ookla's speed rankings in El Salvador. Plans run from 1 to 50 GB for 7 or 30 days, you have 30 days to activate, add-on data is possible and a free 1 GB trial is listed. Our comparison tool shows no unlimited plan for El Salvador.
In our test, the help desk was the problem: the chatbot looped on an access point question and gave no route to a human. The app has a home-screen widget for remaining data, which no other app we tested has. Price sits slightly below the market average and is flat across sizes. Our Nomad review has the details, and Nomad's site lists the plans.

Jetpac eSIM in our hands
Jetpac is a niche choice for frequent flyers and callers, and one report is too few to judge it. It worked well for 1 of 1 traveler who reported from El Salvador. Its El Salvador plans run from 1 to 20 GB for 4, 7 or 30 days and are flagged 4G only in our comparison tool; regional Latin America and global plans go up to 50 GB. We could not confirm its network in El Salvador.
In our test, the app and checkout were rough, but the extras stand out: free WhatsApp, Maps and Uber after data runs out on packs of 3 GB or more, and voice packs in the app. On its page the 15 GB plan costs more than the 20 GB plan (as of September 2026, being re-verified). Price is among the higher ones for 3 to 20 GB. Our Jetpac review has the details, and Jetpac's site lists the plans.

Ubigi eSIM in our hands
Ubigi has no traveler reports from El Salvador yet. Its page lists Tigo as the network, with no 5G icon. Country plans come in 1, 3 and 10 GB plus unlimited for 7 or 15 days, with a fair-use limit on unlimited; regional Latin America, Americas and world plans also cover the country.
In our test, Ubigi had the weakest help desk: a good bot checklist, then an email ticket that got no reply in 24 hours, and the app is a wrapped website. It has one real strength: you can buy more data with a zero balance, with no Wi-Fi needed. Price is slightly below the market average overall, and its unlimited plans are among the cheapest. Airalo eSIM in our hands
Airalo has no traveler reports from El Salvador yet, and across all countries it had the lowest share of travelers saying it worked of the 14 providers. Its El Salvador plans are a local family called Chivo, which its page says runs on the Movistar network in 4G. Sizes are 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 GB plus unlimited for 3 to 30 days, and unlimited slows after 3 GB a day. Regional Latin America plans and global Discover plans also cover the country.
It still has a case for beginners and for anyone who wants calls and texts: Discover+ plans include voice and texts, and one has a US number. In our test, purchase and install were easy and the app was among the best polished. Price is near the market average, never the cheapest. ByteSIM eSIM in our hands
ByteSIM has no traveler reports from El Salvador yet. Its page lists Claro as the primary network, with Digicel and Movistar as backups for voice. El Salvador plans run from 1.5 to 30 GB, including daily plans of 1 GB a day, for 3 to 30 days. Our comparison tool lists no unlimited plan for El Salvador, though its page mentions unlimited and voice bundles. Its pages disagree on whether the network is 4G or 5G.
In our test, checkout asked for a phone number and a full postal address, the app was a wrapped website and the WhatsApp help desk did not answer within 15 minutes. There are no top-ups. Yesim is a Swiss eSIM provider built around unlimited plans sold by the day, with one eSIM for 200+ destinations. Data was fast in our test. But its support was among the slowest we have tested, and its fixed-data country plans cost more than most rivals.

Yesim eSIM in our hands
Yesim has no traveler reports from El Salvador yet. It sells country plans from 1 to 20 GB and unlimited plans for 1, 7, 15 or 30 days; the unlimited plans are throttled and the limit is not stated. We could not confirm its network in El Salvador. Latin America and global bundles also cover the country.
In our test, the plan started at purchase, not at first connection, so buying close to the trip matters. Replies from the help desk took 15 to 60 minutes. Fixed plans are dearer than most here, while unlimited is priced at the market average. Our Yesim review has the details, and Yesim's El Salvador page lists the plans.

Saily is the travel eSIM from the company behind NordVPN, with plans for about 200 destinations. It has the smoothest install we have tested, a polished app and a built-in VPN. But prices run above the market in most big European destinations, and traveler reports sit below average.

Saily eSIM in our hands
Saily has no traveler reports from El Salvador yet. In our test it had the most polished app, the smoothest install and one of the two best help desks. Its El Salvador plans are 1 GB for 7 days and 3, 5 and 10 GB for 30 days, plus Latin America and global plans; our comparison tool lists no unlimited plan for the country. We could not confirm its network in El Salvador.
The drawback is price: for 3 to 10 GB plans it was among the most expensive in our comparison tool, and Saily is among the two dearest providers in 14 of the 24 popular destinations in our price analysis. Across all countries its traveler-report record is below the market average. It suits first-timers who value the app and a fast human help desk. Our Saily review has the details, and Saily's El Salvador page lists the plans.

GigSky is a US travel eSIM that works like its own operator, with plans for 190+ destinations plus cruise, ferry and in-flight plans. Its app stays partly online after your data runs out. But its fixed-data plans are the most expensive of the 12 providers we compared.

GigSky eSIM in our hands
GigSky has no traveler reports from El Salvador yet. It sells El Salvador plans of 1, 3, 5 and 10 GB and a 1-day unlimited pass, plus Latin America plans and cruise plans from 0.2 to 100 GB. We could not confirm its network in El Salvador.
In our test, you must install the app to buy, but the app stays partly online after data runs out, so you can buy another plan without Wi-Fi, and the help desk answered at once. For 3 to 10 GB plans in El Salvador it was among the most expensive in our comparison tool, which makes it a cruise and island specialist more than a budget pick. Our GigSky review has the details, and GigSky's El Salvador page lists the plans.

Best eSIM Plans for El Salvador
Prices differ most for 3 to 10 GB plans. Global YO, GoMoWorld and eSIM4Travel were among the cheapest in our comparison tool when we exported the plans, and Saily, Jetpac and GigSky among the dearest. Airalo, eSIM4Travel, GigSky (1-day passes), Ubigi and Yesim sell unlimited country plans; Maya sells a global unlimited plan, and Holafly lists unlimited plans on its own page.
Price per GB in El Salvador by eSIM Provider
How much does each provider charge per GB in El Salvador? The chart below compares plans of 1 to 10 GB that last 6 to 14 days, the usual range for a one- or two-week trip. Provider websites show only their own plans, so this side-by-side view is one you would otherwise have to calculate yourself. A shorter bar means a lower price per GB.

Best eSIM for San Salvador, La Libertad and Rural Areas
No traveler report names a city or area in El Salvador, so no provider has a place-level pick, and the country picks apply everywhere. The overall pick, Maya Mobile, has no place-level reports either.
| Where you are going | What the reports show | Our pick |
|---|---|---|
| San Salvador and Santa Tecla | too few reports | Country pick applies |
| La Libertad coast | too few reports | Country pick applies |
| Parks, mountains and border areas | too few reports | Country pick applies |
The network information gives a few leads, labelled as such. There are no traveler reports from San Salvador yet, but this is where Tigo says it switched on 5G on 28 Oct 2025, in San Salvador and its historic centre, Santa Tecla, Soyapango, Mejicanos, Antiguo Cuscatlán, Lourdes, Nuevo Cuscatlán and the port of La Libertad, according to press reports. We could not confirm 5G through any travel eSIM, and Global YO's page says 4G only, so expect 4G.
For parks, mountains and border areas, there are no traveler reports yet, and Opensignal's coverage awards went to Tigo in December 2023 and December 2024, according to Opensignal. An eSIM that includes Tigo (Global YO, Ubigi, Roamless, Holafly and eSIM4Travel list it) is the safer fit there. Holafly lists all three main networks. Tigo's own coverage map is the place to check a specific route [3].
Local SIM Cards and Operator eSIMs in El Salvador
A local prepaid pack from Tigo, Movistar or Claro costs less than any travel eSIM we compared, but it needs registration and a store visit. A travel eSIM wins for short trips, for the arrival night and for trips that cross borders. A local SIM wins for a week or more of heavy data. In every row of our break-even comparison, the local price was lower (as of September 2026).
Tigo publishes the clearest prices, and they include IVA, the 13% sales tax [2]. The conditions text on the page was dated July 2026, so confirm the price at the counter.
| Tigo prepaid pack | Validity | Price (as of September 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Unlimited GB | 1, 2, 4 or 7 days | $1.50, $2.00, $3.00 or $5.00 |
| Todo Incluido 5 GB | 8 days | $4.00 |
| Todo Incluido 12 GB | 30 days | $15.00 |
| Todo Incluido 20 GB | 30 days | $20.00 |
| Promo 25 GB with 200 minutes | 15 days | $10.00 |
Movistar's web promos, seen in search snippets, list $5.00 for 20 GB over 15 days and $2.50 for 14 GB over 7 days (reported, as of September 2026, being re-verified). A press report on an April 2026 promo describes a Claro 8-day Superpack for $4.00 with 4 GB for YouTube and TikTok, 4 GB of open data, 3 GB of Claro Video, unlimited WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and X, and 40 minutes to the USA and Canada. We could not confirm Digicel's prepaid prices; Digicel says its stores and top-up channels keep running normally while its sale to Movistar's owner goes through.
Registration is the catch. A 2022 telecom law reform requires a registry of all users, including prepaid, according to press reports. Tigo's prepaid eSIM activation page asks for a valid DUI (the national ID), and we could not confirm that passports are accepted on that route. At the counter, one provider's page and a travel site say a passport works (reported).
Tigo has a store locator on its site. Sources conflict on the airport: one provider's page says there is an operator kiosk at the airport plus Claro shops in malls, while a travel site says Digicel was the only operator kiosk there as of February 2025. We could not confirm airport prices.
Mobile Networks in El Salvador
El Salvador has four mobile networks: Claro, Tigo, Movistar and Digicel. Claro is the fastest in measurements and Tigo has the widest coverage, so a travel eSIM that includes Tigo is the safer fit outside the cities. Press reports citing SIGET give market shares of 32% for Claro, 27% each for Tigo and Movistar and 13% for Digicel, and say 98% of the population has at least 3G. SIGET, the regulator, publishes quarterly indicators, with the latest page covering Q4 2025 [1].
For speed, Ookla named Claro the fastest network for the fifth year running in its first-half 2025 report, according to press coverage. For coverage, Opensignal gave Tigo its coverage award in December 2023 and December 2024, according to Opensignal. Tigo publishes an official coverage map [3]; we could not confirm official maps for Claro, Movistar or Digicel.
5G is a conflict in our sources. Tigo switched on El Salvador's first 5G on 28 Oct 2025 with 70 antennas in the San Salvador area, according to three press outlets, but a trade-press article from 17 Sep 2026 says the country still has no 5G deployments. We treat Tigo's launch as the primary event and could not confirm 5G through any travel eSIM, so plan for 4G.
Which provider rides which network, from each provider's own page as of September 2026:
- Claro: Nomad and ByteSIM (Claro only); Holafly and eSIM4Travel (several networks).
- Tigo: Global YO and Ubigi (Tigo only); Roamless, Holafly and eSIM4Travel (several networks).
- Movistar: Airalo (4G only); Roamless, Holafly and eSIM4Travel (several networks).
- Not named or not confirmed: Saily, Yesim, Jetpac, GigSky, GoMoWorld and Maya Mobile. eSIM4Travel's list is also being re-verified.
No provider claims a local El Salvador profile or a direct deal with an operator, so every setup needs data roaming switched on. On the business side, Digicel signed a sale of its El Salvador business to GITES, the owner of Movistar, on 14 Sep 2026, with closing expected in the first half of 2027 pending approvals. Digicel says it operates normally during the transition, and no network merger has been announced, so a trip now is unaffected.
How to Set Up an eSIM for El Salvador
- The phone must be eSIM-capable and not carrier-locked. Our first eSIM article covers the check in a few minutes.
- Buy and install on Wi-Fi before you fly, using the iPhone or Samsung instructions. Almost every plan we tested starts on first connection, not at install. Exceptions: Yesim's plan started at purchase, GoMoWorld needs a manual Start, and some Airalo packages start at install. eSIM4Travel and Airalo give you 90 days to activate, Nomad 60 days.
- Leave the eSIM line switched off until you land.
- After landing, switch on the eSIM line and data roaming for it. If data does not start, enter the APN (the access point name, a data setting) the provider gives you; Maya Mobile and Global YO use "globaldata".
- If there is no signal, pick another network by hand. eSIM4Travel lets you choose between two networks for many countries, and in our test Roamless only worked after we switched network manually. Our article on eSIMs with several networks shows how.
- Keep Wi-Fi nearby for top-ups, because most apps stop working at zero data. GigSky and Ubigi let you buy more without Wi-Fi, and Roamless leaves a trickle of data. If nothing works, see our troubleshooting article.
Calls and SMS in El Salvador
Most travel eSIMs are data only, so calls go through WhatsApp or another app, and a normal local number needs a voice plan or a local SIM. El Salvador's calling code is +503. Under the national numbering plan in force since 29 Oct 2025, mobile numbers start with 5, 6 or 7, and fixed lines keep eight digits with prefix 2.
Several providers sell voice. Airalo's Discover+ plans include voice and texts, and one has a US number. Jetpac sells voice packs in its app, Roamless has in-app VoIP calls and an optional second number, Global YO has outgoing VoIP calls, and Saily has a US number add-on. ByteSIM sells voice bundles, with local-number plans in more than 20 countries. For local minutes, Tigo's promo packs include them, and a Claro Superpack in a press report included 40 minutes to the USA and Canada (see the local SIM section).
Free eSIM Data for El Salvador
Four providers list a free trial for El Salvador, as of September 2026: Roamless (a free trial plan that starts on activation), GoMoWorld (a free 1-day plan), Nomad (a free 1 GB trial) and GigSky (a free 100 MB trial, which we are re-verifying). A trial is enough to test an install before you fly. Our free eSIM article covers trials across providers.

Summary: the best eSIM for El Salvador
Based on 13 traveler reports from El Salvador and our tests, Maya Mobile is the best option for trips of a week or more: it worked well for 3 of 3 travelers, and its weakness is that it sells nothing for short, small needs. Holafly also worked well for 3 of 3 and suits travelers who want unlimited data on any of three networks, but its speed was capped from the start in our test. eSIM4Travel is the budget option, with no reports yet and no app, so its place rests on price and our test. GoMoWorld and Roamless also had only positive reports, but 2 of 2 is too few to rank them.
The best eSIM for El Salvador also depends on whether you can use a local SIM: a registered Tigo prepaid pack costs less than any travel eSIM we compared, while a travel eSIM works before you land and across borders. Evidence is limited for every provider, so we expect these picks to move as more reports arrive.
